Phase A of the backend restructuring, storage half: src/database.rs (2,953 lines) and src/catalog.rs (2,926 lines) become src/database/ and src/catalog/, split along their domains. Code was moved, not changed. No function was renamed, no signature or SQL changed, and no comment was rewritten. Every public path is the same as before (the three unused pub(crate) exceptions are listed under "Visibility changes"): crate::database::X and crate::catalog::X resolve through explicit pub use / pub(crate) use lines in each mod.rs, and nothing under tests/ was edited.

Commits:

  1. git mv of both files to */mod.rs and nothing else, so git records the renames.
  2. The database split.
  3. The catalog split.
  4. Dropping the three pub(crate) re-exports that nothing in the crate used.
  5. Moving the MusicBrainz paragraphs onto consolidate_catalog_derivations, a doc comment placement fix from review. Nothing else in the code changed.

tests.rs 27 The inline mod tests (the search-bound test)

The longest code file is catalog/apply.rs at 665 lines, and the longest tests.rs is database/tests.rs at 575.

Where this departs from the suggested shape

  • database: record types sit with their domain, not in a records.rs. AccountRole is in accounts.rs, the two library enums are in libraries.rs, the credential shapes are in sessions.rs, and so on. A records.rs would have been a list of types with nothing that uses them. parse_uuid, parse_role and insert_audit are in mod.rs because four children call them.
  • database::check_file_instance_key is in keys.rs, not beside check_file. It reads the key fingerprint, so it belongs with the key. check_file stays in mod.rs.
  • database/sync_operations.rs (90 lines) is new. reserve_sync_operation and its two types make up the sync idempotency ledger, which is neither lifecycle nor accounts.
  • catalog: consolidations are in derivations.rs, not scan_jobs.rs. They are 240 lines that derive data from the catalogue's contents, not job bookkeeping. Credit decisions also run them inside their own transaction (*_in).
  • catalog: the seen/unseen/skip-facts/sidecar methods are in availability.rs, not apply.rs. Together with them, apply.rs would have come to about 870 lines, over the 800 limit. Recording which tracks a scan saw is also a different job from writing a file's rows.
  • catalog/credits.rs is new. The brief would have put these functions in overrides.rs, but RFC-015 credit decisions are their own domain, separate from tag corrections. overrides.rs keeps only the correction helpers.
  • No catalog/rows.rs. Each *_from_row is used by one file only, so it sits in that file. parse_uuid is the one shared helper, and it is in mod.rs.

Visibility changes the split required

All of them are pub(super), on items that were private and are now called from a sibling file:

  • catalog::identity: TrackIdentity and TrackIdentity::new, track_credits, album_artist_display. All are used by apply.
  • catalog::apply: upsert_artist (used by overrides and credits) and upsert_genre (used by overrides).
  • catalog::credits: credit_names (used by apply and identity) and with_album_artist_sorts (used by apply).

Three pub(crate) items are no longer re-exported at their parent path: database::SyncOperationReplayRecord, catalog::read_track_credits and catalog::Recomputed. Nothing outside their own file uses any of them. Re-exporting them only made rustc report an unused import, and keeping them would have needed an #[allow(unused_imports)]. The items themselves are unchanged, in database/sync_operations.rs and catalog/credits.rs. Every pub path, and every pub(crate) path the crate actually uses, is still re-exported.

Proof that nothing was lost

  • cargo test --all-features -- --list | grep -c ': test$' gave 663 before and 663 after. The sorted name lists match line for line: database::tests::* and catalog::tests::* keep their names because each tests.rs sits directly under its module.
  • I compared every non-blank line of the two original files, with indentation stripped, against the new files. Every original line is in the new files. The only original lines that changed are the use lines and mod tests {.
  • cargo fmt --all --check: pass. rustfmt rewrapped only two function signatures, which grew past the line limit when they gained pub(super).
  • cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings: pass.
  • cargo test --all-features: pass. 663 passed and 0 failed, across the library, the binary and the 23 integration targets. The run used -j 2 and its own CARGO_TARGET_DIR.

For phase B

  • CLAUDE.md says "SQL belongs in src/database.rs, src/catalog.rs or src/services/", and AGENTS.md says "SQL stays in src/database.rs or later repository modules". Both name files that are now directories, and both need updating when phase B settles where the modules live. This PR leaves them alone on purpose.

Noticed, deliberately not changed

  • catalog: in the original file, the doc comment on consolidate_sort_names opened with the paragraphs describing the MusicBrainz vote ("Recomputes the derived MusicBrainz identifier…"). There was no break between them and the function's own doc, so rustdoc attached both to consolidate_sort_names. This one was fixed here, after review. The paragraphs now sit at the end of the doc of consolidate_catalog_derivations, the function that runs that vote, after a /// separator. The wording is unchanged; that separator is the only line added.
  • catalog: apply_catalog_track_in_transaction puts #[allow(clippy::too_many_arguments)] before its doc comment, and that comment is two comments run together: "Reachable from the domain services…" and then "Writes one track into the catalogue." The doc for record_library_event ("Appends one fact to a library's change feed…") sits above LibraryChange instead, merged into that struct's own doc. Both stayed exactly where they were.
  • catalog: several SQL literals hold long runs of spaces where a \ line continuation was lost at some point: track_skip_facts, mark_tracks_under_seen, write_track_credits, read_track_credits and the participant insert in recompute_track_participants. SQLite ignores the whitespace, so behaviour is unaffected. They were moved byte for byte.
  • database::metadata: link_portrait_in writes out the same per-row "parse the ids, record an artist event" loop that record_artist_moves holds. link_fanart_in and unlink_fanart_in call record_artist_moves; link_portrait_in does not. The two could be merged later, but not in a move.

Walkthrough

Layer / File(s) Summary
Crédits et corrections
src/catalog/credits.rs, src/catalog/overrides.rs, src/catalog/mod.rs
