Summary

  • waveflow-server is about to enrich its catalogue through waveflow_core::metadata (RFC-011), and it cannot use the clients as they are. Each built its own reqwest::Client, which follows up to ten redirects, read the body with no ceiling, and aimed at a constant address that leaves a hermetic test suite nothing to point at. TheAudioDB asked under the shared free key "123" with no way to pass another.
  • with_http(client, base_url) now sits beside new() on the Last.fm, TheAudioDB and Deezer clients, and TheAudioDB takes its key there. new() keeps the same addresses, timeout and user agent, so the desktop asks the same questions of the same places; the one change to its client is that a redirect is now followed only inside the origin it asked (see below).
  • Three behaviours change for every caller, the desktop included — each is a defect for anything that caches its results, which is what the server will do:
    • bodies are read through a 2 MiB ceiling, checked against the announced length and against a running count for a response that announces nothing or lies;
    • Last.fm's read methods stop answering Ok for every error code. Code 6 ("no such artist") stays an answer. A refused key, a spent quota, or a failure status whose body names no code is now a LookupError. Read as answers, they told a caching caller that a throttled minute was an artist with no biography and no neighbours;
    • transport errors lose their URL. reqwest prints it in Display and Debug, and these URLs carry the caller's key — in Last.fm's query string, in TheAudioDB's path. Every caller logs what it gets.
  • Plus artist_get_info_by_mbid, because an MBID has no homonyms and the server's catalogue carries them.

After the first review (459200a4)

  • CodeQL feat(ui): splash screen to mask cold-start delay #26, rust/cleartext-transmission, was right. with_http accepted any address, so a caller could send TheAudioDB's key — and Last.fm's, and its signed forms — in clear. On both keyed clients with_http now returns Result<Self, BaseUrlError> and refuses plaintext unless the host is this machine (localhost, 127.0.0.0/8, ::1), where test listeners and local stand-ins live. A host that only looks local, such as 127.0.0.1.attacker.example, is remote.
  • new()'s client follows a redirect only inside the origin first asked. require_secure vets the address a caller picks; this vets the ones a provider picks afterwards — on a 307/308, reqwest re-sends the signed form wherever it points. The origin includes the scheme, so there is no fallback to plaintext either.
  • The three signed Last.fm methods read through the ceiling too, with LastfmError::TooLarge; LastfmError and DeezerError strip the URL like LookupError; and a mobile-session reply that fails to decode no longer puts its body — which can hold the session key — in the error message.

What the desktop sees (08750fe8)

The distinction above is only worth something if the caller keeps it, and enrich_artist_deezer did not: on any failure it wrote an empty biography over the cached one, stamped the selected source and gave the row the full 30 days — one bad minute cost an artist their biography for a month. That was true before this PR too; this PR is what made it fixable.

The bio columns now follow the rule the background columns already did (background_fetched_at + CASE): an answer replaces what was there, empty or not; a failure to ask keeps the biography and the source and expires the row after an hour (RETRY_AFTER_MS, since a4456bb4), so a later visit asks again without re-running the whole enrichment on every open while a key stays refused. A kept biography is still shown — only if it answers the source and language now selected, as the cache-hit check requires. The write moved into upsert_artist_row to be testable against the real app migrations.

For similar artists, a refused key now makes artist_get_similar return Err instead of an empty list. try_lastfm in commands/similar.rs (unchanged) already maps Err to None, so it falls back to Deezer instead of being cached as an empty list.

Saving the Last.fm key expires the biographies cached under Last.fm (and those with no recorded source, which read as Last.fm) in the same transaction — only when the stored value actually changes, since the Settings card and onboarding send it on every save. DeezerError gains TooLarge and Decode; nothing outside the module matches on it exhaustively.

Tracks InstaZDLL/waveflow-server#263, step A of the server's enrichment plan.

How I tested

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo check --workspace --all-targets (no warnings), cargo clippy -p waveflow-core --all-targets -- -D warnings.
  • cargo test -p waveflow-core --lib metadata:: — 74 pass, 22 of them new. They run against a canned listener on loopback (metadata::test_server), through a client that follows no redirect, as the server will hand in.
  • Each new test was made to fail under the change it guards, by an inversion applied and reverted mechanically:
inversion test that fails
every Last.fm error code reads as an absence a_refused_key_is_a_failure_and_not_an_absence, a_spent_quota_under_a_success_status_is_still_a_failure

TheAudioDB keeps asking under the free key the_operators_key_goes_where_the_free_one_used_to
TheAudioDB ignores the status a_failure_status_is_a_failure_and_not_an_absence
an MBID is asked as a name a_musicbrainz_id_is_asked_as_one

either keyed client skips the check its a_plaintext_address_off_this_machine_is_refused
the desktop client follows redirects anywhere again the_desktop_client_does_not_follow_a_redirect_out_of_its_origin
  • The app crate's tests run on Linux only (the Tauri test binary does not start headless on Windows — ci.yml says so). Its new tests were run under WSL, with eleven inversions, each caught: a failure overwrites the bio · a failure is cached for the TTL · a failure expires at once · an empty answer keeps the old bio via COALESCE · a first failure records its source · a kept bio is shown whatever its source · a key change expires nothing · expires every source · spares rows with no source · an unchanged key still expires · every save is a no-op.
  • Local CodeRabbit rounds before each push. One found the 503-with-{} case, one found the redirect rule; the last found nothing.
  • One inversion passed at first and is worth saying: once new()'s client refused cross-origin redirects, the redirect test — which redirected to another port — could no longer tell the injected client from the default one. It now redirects inside the origin, which only the injected client refuses.

…their caller

waveflow-server is about to enrich its catalogue through these clients,
and it cannot use them as they are. Each built its own reqwest client,
which follows up to ten redirects, read the body with no ceiling, and
aimed at a constant address that leaves a hermetic suite nothing to
point at. TheAudioDB asked under the shared free key with no way to
pass another.

Each client now has with_http(client, base_url) beside new(), and
TheAudioDB takes its key there. new() builds exactly what it built
before, so the desktop asks the same questions of the same addresses.

Three things change for every caller, the desktop included.

Bodies are read through a two-megabyte ceiling, checked against the
announced length first and against a running count for a response that
announces nothing or lies.

Last.fm's read methods no longer answer Ok for every error code. Code 6
is "no such artist" and stays an answer; a refused key or a spent quota
is a LookupError, and so is a failure status whose body names no code.
Read as answers, they told a caller that caches its results that a
throttled minute was an artist with no biography and no neighbours. The
desktop's two callers already treat both the same for the biography;
for similar artists a refused key now falls back to Deezer instead of
being cached as an empty list.

Transport errors lose their URL. reqwest prints it in Display and
Debug, and these URLs carry the caller's key, in Last.fm's query string
and in TheAudioDB's path. Every caller logs what it gets.

Last.fm also gains artist_get_info_by_mbid: an id has no homonyms.

Each new test was made to fail under the change it guards: eight
inversions, each caught by the test that names it.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 74a00

Changing the Last.fm key invalidates affected biography-cache rows. The prior Deezer URL-disclosure concern is resolved, leaving no actionable merge risk identified.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 74a00

The changes improve response-size limits, credential redaction and cache failure handling. Existing desktop callers retain fixed provider endpoints. The new caller-configurable API needs trusted endpoint and transport configuration, but the planned server integration was not available to verify.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The configured Last.fm destination also applies to the inherited login method, which sends username, password and API key in a signed form. The injection boundary therefore affects more than public metadata reads. The inspected desktop login continues to construct the fixed-endpoint default client; exposure of an external caller's credentials remains unverified.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — In the inspected desktop enrichment path, artist names are query values rather than destination selectors, and clients are constructed with fixed defaults. A credential-forwarding path through an untrusted configured origin or permissive injected redirect policy would require additional caller behavior not demonstrated in this checkout; it is not treated as a verified vulnerability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Keyed constructors require HTTPS except for literal loopback addresses or localhost, but accept arbitrary HTTPS origins. Default clients restrict redirects to the original origin, including its scheme. Injected clients retain their caller's policies unchanged, so constructor URL validation is not a provider allowlist or an independent redirect/proxy boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The transaction couples credential mutation with dependent cache expiry, preventing an application success path that commits only one operation. Repetition remains safe for known provider values. Cancellation rollback follows transaction ownership rather than a demonstrated interruption test; concurrent remote requests remain outside that transaction.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — At the future server integration boundary, explicitly enforce trusted destination provenance and the intended redirect, proxy and timeout policies before constructing these clients. Keep request-controlled values out of base URLs. This is an integration requirement to verify, not an observed defect in the unavailable server implementation.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Comment thread src-tauri/crates/core/src/metadata/theaudiodb.rs Dismissed
…eaves its origin

CodeQL flagged TheAudioDB's key travelling to an address with_http
accepted unchecked, and the alert was right: before with_http the
address was a constant https URL, and now a caller can pass http.
Last.fm has the same exposure, with a key in its query string and a
session key or a password in its signed forms. with_http on both now
refuses a plaintext address unless it is this machine, where a test's
listener or a local stand-in lives and there is no wire to read.

That vets the address a caller chooses, not the ones a provider
chooses afterwards: new()'s client followed any redirect, and on a 307
or 308 reqwest sends the body again — the signed form — wherever it
points. It now follows a redirect only inside the origin first asked,
which also forbids falling back to plaintext.

From the review of the first push:

- the three signed methods read through the same ceiling as the rest,
  with a TooLarge error of their own rather than a fake API error;
- LastfmError and DeezerError strip the URL from transport errors, as
LookupError already did. The signed calls carry no secret in theirs,
but Deezer's carries the search, and the earlier commit claimed this
  of every transport error in the module;
- a mobile-session reply that fails to decode no longer puts its body
in the error message, since that body can hold the session key.

The redirect test asked for a target on another port, which the
desktop's client now refuses as well, so it could no longer tell the
injected client from the default one. It now redirects inside the
origin, which only the injected client refuses.

Seventeen inversions, each caught by the test that names it.

CodeQL read the literal secret and password the three mobile-session tests
hand to auth_get_mobile_session as hard-coded credentials, since the call
signs them. Those tests are about the body ceiling, the decode error and the
redacted URL; the values play no part, so they are now made at run time.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The earlier commits made a refused key, a spent quota or a network
failure distinguishable from "no such artist", and the desktop's own
caller still collapsed the two. On any failure it wrote an empty
biography over the cached one, stamped the selected source on it and
gave the row the full thirty days: one bad minute cost an artist their
biography for a month.

The bio columns now follow the rule the background columns already
did. When the provider answered, its answer replaces what was there,
empty or not. When it could not be asked, the row keeps the biography
and the source it had and expires now, so the next visit asks again; a
first visit that fails records no source, so nothing reads the row as a
biography looked up. TheAudioDB's bio is held to the same rule through
the reach it already tracked.

The upsert returns what the row holds afterwards, so a kept biography
is still shown — but only if it answers the source and language now
selected, as the cache-hit check already required.

The write moves into upsert_artist_row so it can be tested against the
real app migrations. These tests run on Linux only, like the rest of
the app crate's; they were run under WSL with five inversions, each
caught by the test that names it.

With Last.fm selected and no key, an artist's row is cached with an
empty biography stamped lastfm, and the cache-hit check reuses it for
its whole thirty days. Placing a key afterwards asked nothing: the
biographies it would unlock stayed empty for a month. Clearing or
replacing the key had the mirror problem, leaving biographies fetched
under the old one.

set_lastfm_api_key now expires every biography cached under Last.fm in
the same transaction as the setting. Nothing is fetched up front; each
artist is asked again the next time it is opened. Rows from another
source keep their TTL.

Run under WSL like the rest of the app crate's tests, with two
inversions: a change that expires nothing, and one that expires every
source.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

-        if body.len() + chunk.len() > limit {
+        if body.len().saturating_add(chunk.len()) > limit {

`BioSource::parse` reads a NULL `bio_source` as Last.fm, so a row written
before the column existed is served as a Last.fm biography. Placing or
clearing the key now expires it along with the rows stamped `lastfm`.

Desktop-side review. The core is solid. Two things should change before merge, plus a description nit.

1. A failure to ask expires the whole row now: no backoff (important)

upsert_artist_row sets expires_at = now when bio.reached is false. Not caching the failure for 30 days is the right call, but expiring immediately has desktop costs:

  • Wrong key (code 10). Every artist page visit re-runs the full enrichment (Deezer search, TheAudioDB, Last.fm), indefinitely.
  • Spent quota (code 29). The next visit asks again at once, which feeds the throttle instead of letting it pass.
  • Batch fetch. batch_fetch_missing_artist_pictures selects every row with expires_at <= now. Each run therefore re-enriches all of these artists, including those that already have their picture.

Suggestion: expire after a short retry window (an hour, say), not now. The bio is still kept, and the row is retried soon, but not on every open.

2. Saving an unchanged key expires every Last.fm biography (moderate)

store_lastfm_api_key runs UPDATE metadata_artist SET expires_at = 0 WHERE bio_source = 'lastfm' OR bio_source IS NULL on every call. The Settings card's Save button sends the key on every click (handleSaveLastfmKey → setLastfmApiKey(lastfmKey)), whether or not it changed, and so does onboarding. Suggest expiring only when the stored value actually differs. Clearing an absent key would then also be a no-op.

3. Description nit

The description says commands/similar.rs now returns None for a refused key, but that file is not in the diff. The behaviour is real: artist_get_similar now returns Err, and try_lastfm already maps Err to None and falls back to Deezer. Only the wording suggests the file changed.

Checked, fine for the desktop

  • Redirects. None of the three production endpoints redirect today (TheAudioDB www., ws.audioscrobbler.com, api.deezer.com; checked live), so same_origin_only changes nothing for new(). A stopped cross-origin redirect surfaces as a decode failure, so it is not cached. Good.
  • 2 MiB ceiling. It only applies to the JSON clients; artwork downloads go through another path.
  • Scrobbler. It is unaffected: the new LastfmError::TooLarge falls into the retry arm, and code 9 handling is unchanged.
  • Error redaction. without_url() covers the URLs that carried a key. The require_secure loopback parse correctly rejects 127.0.0.1.attacker.example.

Out of scope, follow-up

The ListenBrainz client added in #856 still builds its own reqwest::Client, with no body ceiling and no default_http redirect policy. It has no key leak, because the token travels in a header. Moving it onto the shared helpers would just keep the clients consistent.

…changed key

A failure to ask for a biography expired the row at once, so a refused
key or a spent quota re-ran the whole enrichment on every visit and every
batch pass. It now stands for `RETRY_AFTER_MS`, an hour.

`store_lastfm_api_key` expired every Last.fm biography on each save, and
the Settings card sends the key on every save, changed or not. It now
compares with the stored value first and does nothing when they match.
