So a 1.9.2 can ship fixes without the 2.0 work already on main (#864, #855).

What changes

  • release-please.yml:
    • It runs on main and on release/**, with --target-branch="${GITHUB_REF_NAME}", so a push to release/1.9.x opens or updates a release PR against that branch, from that branch's config and manifest.
    • The tag now comes first. The GitHub release step runs before the release PR update. In the old order, right after a release PR merged, the update looked for the release of the new version before it existed, walked up to 1,500 commits one API call each, and the 10-minute timeout cut the job before the tag step. That cost a manual rerun on 1.8.1, 1.9.0 and 1.9.1.
  • release-please-lockfile-build.yml: it accepts PRs into release/**. The privileged push workflow already allows / and . in the branch name.
  • RELEASING.md:
    • A new section on patch releases from a maintenance branch, including why the branch needs this workflow version too: a push runs the pushed branch's copy.
    • A fix to the claim that the tag triggers release.yml. It does not: a tag pushed with GITHUB_TOKEN starts no workflow, which is why release.yml has been started by hand every time.

Next

  1. release/1.9.x is created from v1.9.1.
  2. Once this PR and fix(ui): no focus ring on what the mouse focused, and no checkbox on hover #868 are merged, both commits are cherry-picked onto it through a PR.
  3. release-please then opens the 1.9.2 PR on that branch.

Local CodeRabbit review: clean.

release-please also runs on release/** branches, targeting the pushed branch, so a fix for a shipped line can be released without the features already on main; the Cargo.lock build accepts release PRs into those branches. The GitHub release step now runs before the release PR update: in the other order the update walked 1,500 commits looking for a release not yet created, and the timeout cut the job before the tag. RELEASING.md documents the maintenance branch, and that release.yml must be started by hand for a tag the workflow made.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 4cb49

Maintenance-branch releases now follow the documented workflow, and the lockfile validation matches the observed PR metadata. The earlier misleading tag-trigger guidance is corrected; no actionable merge risk remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4cb49

The release changes preserve the existing separation between building PR code and writing repository content, and add stronger artifact identity checks. Maintenance branches now participate in privileged release automation. Their documented protection rules could not be independently verified, so the assessment remains conditional on those controls being enforced.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The direct privileged scope is this repository's release tags, GitHub releases, release PRs and lockfile branch updates. The documented downstream reach includes package distributions and the updater manifest, so unauthorized maintenance-release changes could affect shipped artifacts rather than only CI state. No such unauthorized path was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — PR code executes in a producer with contents:read. The write-capable consumer does not check out or build the PR branch; it consumes an artifact and performs GitHub API operations. New identity checks bind artifact claims to the originating run, while existing checks require an open bot-authored PR and its current head.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Release runs are serialized per ref with cancellation disabled. Tag publication and PR refresh are nevertheless separate steps: a failure after publication has no compensating rollback step in this workflow. Manual publication of an existing tag is documented; automatic recovery of every partial CLI operation is not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before enabling maintenance releases, verify the effective release/** ruleset and bypass permissions against the documented review, signature and push restrictions. This is an operational verification proposal, not evidence that protection is absent.

Corriger la section « Watch the workflow ».

npx release-please@17 resolved to whatever 17.x was current at each run, with the write token; it is pinned to 17.11.2. RELEASING.md now says the workflow runs on maintenance branches and tags the branch it targets, that release.yml is started by hand for that tag, and that a Maintenance branches ruleset protects release/** like main, without the CodeQL gate.

@coderabbitai Thanks. All addressed in 7ef7120 except one, explained below.

  • RELEASING.md, "Watch the workflow" (outside diff), applied. It no longer says pushing the tag triggers release.yml: the workflow is started for the tag by hand, as the earlier section now says. A tag pushed by hand would trigger it on its own; release-please's does not.

  • Pin release-please, applied. Both steps use release-please@17.11.2, with a comment saying to bump them together. Dependabot does not see an npx call, so the bump stays manual.

  • Protection of release/**, applied as a repository ruleset, Maintenance branches (id 25230262, active). It sets:

    • no deletion and no force push;
    • required signatures;
    • a pull request with one code-owner approval.

It mirrors Main without its code_scanning rule, because CodeQL only analyses pull requests into main and that rule would block every PR into a release branch. RELEASING.md now says so, and why these branches must not take direct pushes: a push runs the branch's own copy of the workflow with a write token.

  • release-please-lockfile-build.yml protection, covered by the same ruleset. The privileged push workflow already validates the branch name and the PR head SHA.

  • RELEASING.md lines 133/155, applied. The doc now says every push to main or a maintenance branch runs the workflow against that branch, the tag is created on the branch it targets, and it links to the new section.

  • Job-scoped permissions, skipped. The workflow has a single job, and it needs both contents: write (tag, release) and pull-requests: write (the release PR), so moving them to the job changes nothing.

The privileged push checked the PR the artifact names, not that the artifact was built for it: the PR must now be one GitHub attached to the triggering run, at the same branch and head SHA, or the push fails before any write. RELEASING.md gives the release PR title on a maintenance branch.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff finding for the lockfile pipeline, applied in 4cb4946. In release-please-bump-lockfile.yml (the privileged consumer, which runs from main), the artifact is now bound to the run that built it. The PR it names must be in context.payload.workflow_run.pull_requests, with the same head ref and head SHA, and workflow_run.head_sha must equal the artifact's SHA. Otherwise the job fails before any updateRef. An absent or empty list fails the same way; release PRs come from this repository, so GitHub always fills it for them. The existing checks (open PR, bot author, current head) still run after this.
