  • ancestry: ordinary two-parent integration of prior SARIF head 4c45491dc1441c2b6fae0a3ec290a982a2de15ad and protected develop; 4 ahead / 0 behind
  • effective protected-base delta: exactly CHANGELOG.d/1216-sarif-help-uri.md, appguardrail_core/sarif.py, and tests/test_sarif.py
  • preservation: protected workflow-lifecycle paths from develop and all three SARIF blobs are retained; the two sides touched disjoint paths
  • current-head hosted evidence: Scan path 37104562819, Security Process 37104562837, Retention 37104562863, OpenSSF 37104562830, Pinned HTTPS 37104562813, and Tests 37104562899 are terminal FAILURE. Their 8 jobs have steps=null; Tests jobs 111150456440 and 111150456625 return BlobNotFound on log retrieval. This is runner/admission evidence, not an executed SARIF-test verdict. Predecessor successes and CodeQL failure do not transfer
  • review gate: 0 unresolved threads; 0 qualifying current-head approvals. The retained CHANGES_REQUESTED review targets predecessor e97f7b20..., not this head
  • lifecycle: Draft / Proposed / merge HOLD

The previous wrong-base condition is repaired without Force Push or destructive rebase. Keep Draft until the unchanged exact head has terminal executable required Checks, successful CodeQL analysis where required, and a qualifying independent current-head approval. Do not use predecessor evidence, source-neutral wake commits, self-approval, or protection bypass.

Current authority

  • lifecycle: Draft / open / mergeable
  • ordinary-forward: 1 ahead / 0 behind predecessor; 3 files changed

Root cause

The first repair mapped known OWASP labels and accepted existing HTTP(S) references, but treated urllib.parse.urlsplit() as both parser and validator. An untrusted reference such as https://[ raises ValueError and aborted the entire SARIF render. References containing whitespace, C0/DEL control characters, or incomplete percent escapes were accepted as reportingDescriptor.helpUri even though they are not valid URI metadata.

The exact-head writer now:

  • rejects whitespace and C0/DEL controls before parsing;
  • rejects every % not followed by two hexadecimal digits;
  • catches parse failures and continues to later references;
  • still maps canonical OWASP labels and accepts valid absolute HTTP(S) references;
  • preserves every original reference in help.text.

This is the minimal canonical-writer repair; no new validator dependency or parallel SARIF path was added.

Reproducible RED → GREEN

Against predecessor e97f7b20...:

  • malformed bracketed host: SARIF generation raised ValueError: Invalid IPv6 URL;
  • invalid-character references: non-URI text was emitted as helpUri;
  • focused RED: 2 failed / 5 passed.

Against exact head 4c45491d...:

  • focused SARIF suite: 7/7 passed;
  • production and finding-normalizer compile: passed;
  • conflict-marker and trailing-whitespace checks: passed;
  • mutation boundary: removing the parse-error continuation fails the malformed-host test; removing invalid-character admission fails the URI-character test;
  • full repository suite is not claimed locally; all nine hosted exact-head workflows are newly queued.

FP/FN boundary

Positive accepted metadata is limited to known OWASP mappings and syntactically admitted absolute HTTP(S) references with a non-empty hostname. Invalid candidates are omitted from helpUri while remaining readable in help.text; later valid references are still considered. This repair does not claim DNS resolution, reachability, ownership, content trust, or arbitrary-scheme validation.

Exact-head workflows

  • OpenSSF Evidence Coverage 36237290226 — queued
  • Retention Audit Coverage 36237290236 — queued
  • CodeQL PR 36237290243 — queued

  • Scan path context coverage 36237290256 — queued
  • SAST Semgrep 36237290275 — queued
  • Tests 36237290266 — queued

Queued is not GREEN. The predecessor CodeQL failure and CHANGES_REQUESTED review are stale for this new head but remain historical evidence; a fresh terminal exact-head verdict and qualifying independent review are required.

Delivery gate

Keep Draft until one unchanged exact head has terminal Tests, Security Scan, SAST, CodeQL, coverage/governance checks, a fresh qualifying review, and no unresolved valid finding. Do not force-push, destructively rebase, self-approve, source-neutrally retrigger, weaken gates, merge, tag, release, or claim protected functionality before ordinary integration.

Relates to #1216.

@seonghobae I reviewed exact head e97f7b20a87f671e3ebfd4ef695c4d41f9dd2f87.

I verified that all seven OWASP labels in CATEGORY_REFERENCE_DEFAULTS have a corresponding canonical URI mapping. The production CLI SARIF path calls findings_to_sarif directly.

  1. [P1] Handle malformed URI parsing without aborting SARIF output — appguardrail_core/sarif.py, Line 64
    urlsplit() raises ValueError for malformed bracketed hosts such as https://[ or https://[not-an-ipv6]. normalize_finding() preserves references, so an untrusted reference reaches this call and aborts findings_to_sarif. Catch ValueError and continue to the next reference. In this case, omit helpUri and retain the original label in help.text. Add a regression test for this input.

  2. [P1] Reject malformed HTTP(S) strings before emitting helpUri — appguardrail_core/sarif.py, Line 65
    The current scheme-and-netloc check is not URI validation. It accepts values such as https://example.com path, https://example.com/%, and https://example.com/\x00. These values still produce invalid helpUri metadata and can cause the upload warnings that this PR fixes. Validate URI syntax before assigning helpUri, or conservatively reject whitespace, control characters, and malformed percent escapes. Preserve these values only in help.text.

I did not execute repository code or tests.

@seonghobae I reviewed exact head e97f7b20a87f671e3ebfd4ef695c4d41f9dd2f87 directly. I did not use evidence from the RED parent or another PR. I did not execute repository code or tests.

  1. [P1] Fail closed when an untrusted reference is not a parseable URI — appguardrail_core/sarif.py, Line 64
    normalize_finding() preserves arbitrary references, and _help_uri() passes each value to urlsplit() without handling ValueError. A reference such as https://[ can raise ValueError and abort SARIF generation. Also, the current scheme-and-netloc predicate accepts invalid URI strings such as values containing whitespace, control characters, or incomplete percent escapes. These values can still produce invalid SARIF helpUri metadata.

    Catch URI parsing failures and reject invalid HTTP(S) candidates before assignment. Continue to the next reference when a candidate is invalid. The existing help.text assignment already preserves every reference label. Add regressions for a malformed bracketed host and an invalid HTTP(S) string.

The OWASP mapping coverage is complete for the current CATEGORY_REFERENCE_DEFAULTS labels. The mapped labels remain in help.text, and unknown human-readable labels omit helpUri as intended.

2026-09-26 fresh P1 repair on exact head 4c45491dc1441c2b6fae0a3ec290a982a2de15ad (tree d67ee23c4a59a0fae169d394f38fe72d40487e2e).

  • compare: 1 ahead / 0 behind predecessor; SARIF writer, focused regression and CHANGELOG only

The canonical writer now skips invalid candidates, continues to a later valid HTTP(S) reference, and retains all original labels in help.text. No dependency, parallel validator, Force Push, blind rerun, self-approval, finding suppression or gate weakening was added.

Preserve the exact #1216 SARIF implementation and regression while integrating protected develop@2949d30718752ea5915c7713ba227e8c19d9e5bf through an ordinary two-parent commit. The branches touch disjoint paths.

Head 7f22a760ec76f1e61373608c2c9c967e6f9bd3d6 produced six simultaneous workflow failures. Representative Tests matrix jobs and an independent coverage job all report steps: [] and logs_url: null; the job-log endpoint returns 404 BlobNotFound.
