Roto Brush: per-split scratch vectors in the parallel distance transform - #2333
matting::distance (the 1D distance-transform passes behind signed_distance) allocated four vectors per column, three per row and a staging copy for the columns. Both passes stay parallel: the column pass runs on a transposed buffer (each column is a contiguous chunk) and rayon's for_each_init gives each work split one set of scratch vectors instead of four allocations per line. The dt1 arithmetic is unchanged.
distance on a 1080p disk mask, AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D (16 cores / 32 threads), Windows 11, wall time, median of 15 calls, three alternating rounds (the machine had other builds running, so single rounds vary):
1 thread
32 threads
main (per-line vectors, parallel)
32-36 ms
9.7-10.1 ms
first version of this PR (serial, shared scratch)
25-27 ms
25-37 ms
this PR (parallel, scratch per split)
25-26 ms (one outlier at 42 ms)
5.2-5.5 ms
roto_perf_1080ppropagate, 32 threads, median of 3 single runs: main 258 ms, serial version 379 ms, this PR 231 ms.
Verification
New test distance_is_bit_identical_to_the_per_line_version keeps the old per-line implementation and compares to_bits() on a disk, its inverse, 1xN, Nx1, all-true, all-false, seeds on the frame edge and a sparse 333x211 pattern.
cargo test --release -p effectcraft-track passes (101 tests), cargo fmt --all -- --check and cargo clippy -p effectcraft-track --all-targets -- -D warnings are clean.
Ignored benchmark: cargo test --release -p effectcraft-track distance_bench -- --ignored --nocapture (prints the rayon thread count).
A similar scratch reuse for box_mean was tried and rejected: -1.8 % instructions but +50 % wall time.
Image matting now uses fewer temporary memory allocations when calculating distance transforms, which may improve processing efficiency. Distance values and behavior for empty images remain unchanged.
Tests
Added comparisons across varied image dimensions, including tall and one-pixel-wide images, to verify results remain consistent with the previous implementation. An additional benchmark is available for performance evaluation.
matting::distance allocated four vectors per column plus a staging copy
and three vectors per row. Run the columns and rows through four reused
scratch vectors instead; the dt1 arithmetic is unchanged.

Summary
Reuse scratch buffers for both passes crates/track/src/roto/matting.rs
distance uses a transposed buffer for the column pass and reuses per-worker scratch vectors. Tests compare results with the reference implementation, including a tall, one-pixel-wide input, and include an ignored 1080p benchmark.
The transform reuses scratch storage without changing its indexing. No merge-blocking risk was identified.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in crates/track/src/roto/matting.rs: distance replaces parallel column and row transforms, which allocated temporary vectors per line, with serial transforms that reuse shared f, d, v, and z buffers sized to max(w, h). It gathers and writes each column, then copies each row through the same buffers; the distance-transform results and later square-root conversion are unchanged.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the change: per-split scratch vectors in the parallel distance transform in the Roto Brush code. The raw summary and objectives both say the distance function now reuses Rayon per-work-split scratch buffers, and the column pass uses a transposed buffer. The title is specific and matches the main change, so it passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#2324] requires scratch reuse for both distance passes, removal of per-column result allocation, unchanged dt1 arithmetic, and bit-identical output. crates/track/src/roto/matting.rs uses Rayon for_each_init with line-sized scratch vectors for columns and rows. It uses one transposed column buffer instead of per-column vectors. The dt1 function is unchanged. Tests compare the new result with the previous implementation across the required edge and representative inputs. The reported crate tests and quality checks support the implementation.

This PR is one of 17 from a speed audit of crates/track and its callers (issues #2317-#2330, #2322, #2349). Overview of what each one measured, so the effect is visible in one place:
correctness fix, +6.1 % instructions on valid input
valid input unchanged
Notes:
All numbers are single-thread (RAYON_NUM_THREADS=1), perf stat -e instructions:u (the PRs that quote time use the timed kernel), base and branch alternated, medians. They are kernel/stage measurements from each PR's own benchmark, not one end-to-end number for the whole tracker; the stages mostly act on different features (point tracking, Warp Stabilizer, mask tracking, Roto Brush, camera solve, effect caches), so they do not simply multiply.
Thanks @vangel76! This removes the rayon parallelism in roto/matting.rs (into_par_iter / par_chunks_mut) and was measured with RAYON_NUM_THREADS=1. signed_distance runs once per frame at the top level, so wall time on a multicore machine will likely get worse. Could you keep the parallel loops with per-thread scratch (map_init / for_each_init) and report multithreaded wall time?

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the whole diff: the Roto Brush distance transform drops the parallel per-column pass and reuses four scratch vectors sequentially. The stated reason is a single-thread measurement (dt1 self time 17.5% of propagate). That measurement says allocation is costly, but it doesn't show that going serial is faster on a multi-core machine, which is where users run this. Please add a multi-thread benchmark (or keep par_iter with per-thread scratch via map_init/for_each_init) and a test that the output is bit-identical to the old implementation on a few seed masks.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
@bflatastic sorry for the slow reply, I lost track of this PR. Thanks for the review; I'm working through your points (and the other review comments here) now and will reply point by point with the fixes.
The previous commit made the column and row passes serial, which was measured
on one thread only. Both passes are parallel again: the column pass runs on a
transposed buffer so every column is a contiguous chunk, and rayon's
for_each_init gives each work split one set of scratch vectors instead of
four allocations per line. The square root is folded into the row pass.
A test keeps the old per-line implementation and checks that the output is
bit-identical on a disk, its inverse, 1xN, Nx1, all-true, all-false, seeds on
the frame edge and a sparse 333x211 pattern. An ignored benchmark prints the
1080p median and the rayon thread count.

@bflatastic@FredApps thanks, you were right: the serial version was slower on a multicore machine. Fixed in 7a3463f.
The column and row passes are parallel again. The column pass runs on a transposed buffer so each column is a contiguous chunk; for_each_init gives each rayon work split one set of scratch vectors (instead of four allocations per line). The square root is folded into the row pass.
Bit-identity: distance_is_bit_identical_to_the_per_line_version keeps the old implementation in the test module and compares to_bits() on a disk, its inverse, 1xN, Nx1, all-true, all-false, seeds on the frame edge and a sparse 333x211 pattern.
Wall time, distance on a 1080p disk, Ryzen 9 7950X3D (16C/32T), Windows 11, median of 15 calls, three alternating rounds (other builds were running, so rounds vary):

roto_perf_1080p propagate at 32 threads (median of 3 single runs): main 258 ms, serial 379 ms, this head 231 ms. The thread count is printed by the benchmark (rayon::current_num_threads()), so the 32-thread runs did use 32 threads. The PR body is updated with these numbers.
