Tracker: Lucas-Kanade resolves its bilinear taps once per window - #2331
klt::lk_point computes the bilinear weights and the clamped column/row index tables once per window (per level and iteration) instead of calling Plane::sample up to three times per window pixel.
Why
All (2r+1)^2 pixels of a window share one fractional offset. Plane::sample (f64 floor, bounds test, clamp path) was 52 % of Warp Stabilizer analysis time, floor another 8 %.
How
A small Taps table (column pairs, row pairs pre-multiplied by the width, one [f32; 2] fraction) is filled per window with the same clamping as Plane::at; bilerp is Plane::sample's exact lerp form on those indices. lk_point's signature and results are unchanged, so camtrack (which shares klt::track) gets the speed-up too.
Verification
New test window_taps_match_per_pixel_sampling_bit_for_bit keeps the old per-pixel implementation under #[cfg(test)] and compares to_bits of the result on ~2000 start points (including outside the frame and on the borders, with guesses, two window/iteration settings).
Warp Stabilizer analysis JSON hash identical before and after (9f4123ecced9a022, 1080p, 80 frames).
One thread, 1080p synthetic footage, base and branch alternated, 3 rounds each (identical instruction counts across rounds). Instructions include the frame generation, which is the same in both.
Every pixel of a (2r+1)^2 window shares one fractional offset per level
and iteration, but lk_point called Plane::sample (with a libm floor, a
bounds test and the clamp path) up to three times per pixel. The offset
and the clamped column/row index tables are now computed once per
window and the pixels run the same lerps on integer indices.

lk_point now resolves bilinear sampling taps for tracking windows and reuses them for image and gradient samples. A test-only reference implementation and comparison test check tracked coordinates and lost-point outcomes.
Changes: KLT sampling optimization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Resolve and reuse sampling taps crates/track/src/klt.rs
lk_point resolves clamped indices and fractional offsets, then uses bilerp for source and displaced target samples.
Compare optimized and reference tracking crates/track/src/klt.rs
A test-only lk_point_ref retains the previous sampling approach. Tests compare tracked coordinates and lost-point outcomes across varied points, guesses, and options.
Tracking a multi-channel plane can panic in debug builds or produce incorrect results in release builds. Correct the tap indexing before merge, or explicitly accept this bounded limitation.

Explanation
Directly linked issue #2317 has three coding requirements. All three are implemented in crates/track/src/klt.rs at the reviewed head.
(1) Per-window bilinear weights and clamped index tables. New Taps::set computes the fraction t once and fills xs/ys with clamped column pairs and row pairs pre-multiplied by p.w. It runs once per window, per level, and per iteration (the iteration call uses the shifted centre c + g + v). The clamping uses clamp(0, w-1) and clamp(0, h-1), which matches Plane::at. The fraction (c - 0.5) - floor matches Plane::sample.
(2) Integer-indexed lerps in Plane::sample's form. bilerp computes top = a + (b-a)*t[0], bot = c + (e-c)*t[0], then top + (bot-top)*t[1]. This is the same operation order as the inside path of Plane::sample with ch == 1. Gradients use the same taps on gx.data and gy.data. Both planes have the dimensions of their source level, so clamping against ia is equivalent.
(3) Bit-identical results with tests. The new test window_taps_match_per_pixel_sampling_bit_for_bit keeps lk_point_ref (the old per-pixel code, test-only) and compares to_bits of the results. It covers about 2,400 start points, including borders and out-of-frame points, two option sets, varied guesses, and matching lost-point outcomes. The test is present in the reviewed head.
The issue accepts a theoretical 1-ulp difference at power-of-two crossings. The code applies c + dx in a different order than Plane::sample, so that caveat remains. The Warp Stabilizer JSON hash and the timing figures come from the PR description. I could not verify them from the repository, so they are not counted as evidence here.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The change set, as shown by the whole-PR diff of crates/track/src/klt.rs (merge base 9919048 to head 95721b8), touches only crates/track/src/klt.rs. This matches the issue scope, which lists klt.rs only. Every hunk serves #2317:
Taps struct and Taps::set: per-window index and fraction tables.
bilerp: lerp used by the new sampling path.
lk_point edits: use the taps for the intensity and gradient samples and for the iteration loop. The v1 scratch buffer is removed because it is no longer needed.
Test-only lk_point_ref and the bit-for-bit test: the oracle that verifies the requirement.
No unrelated refactoring or behaviour change appears in the reviewed diff. I did not verify the list of changed files outside klt.rs by a whole-repository diff. The file-scope conclusion rests on the supplied change summary, which names only klt.rs, and on the issue scope.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Preserve sampling for multi-channel planes.
If a caller passes a multi-channel Plane to GrayPyramid::from_plane, lk_point reaches this assertion and panics in debug builds. In release builds, bilerp indexes Plane::data without the channel stride, so tracking samples the wrong values. Plane::sample used the stride. Preserve that indexing in the tap path, or enforce the one-channel requirement at the public constructor.

This PR is one of 17 from a speed audit of crates/track and its callers (issues #2317-#2330, #2322, #2349). Overview of what each one measured, so the effect is visible in one place:
correctness fix, +6.1 % instructions on valid input
valid input unchanged
Notes:
All numbers are single-thread (RAYON_NUM_THREADS=1), perf stat -e instructions:u (the PRs that quote time use the timed kernel), base and branch alternated, medians. They are kernel/stage measurements from each PR's own benchmark, not one end-to-end number for the whole tracker; the stages mostly act on different features (point tracking, Warp Stabilizer, mask tracking, Roto Brush, camera solve, effect caches), so they do not simply multiply.
Merged, thank you @vangel76! It landed on main with a batch of community PRs, after a full workspace build and test run on Windows against the refactored main (fmt, strict clippy, about 4,100 tests, layers, assets and wasm).
