Summary

Pilot consumer-repo PR for spizeck/app-foundations#144: prove official, version-aware Next.js guidance + a real browser dev loop, using the shared agent-skills platform — no app code touched.

  • AGENTS.md (new) — minimal entry point deferring to AI_INSTRUCTIONS.md (untouched), plus the generated docs index from npx @next/codemod@16.4.0 agents-md --output AGENTS.md. The codemod detected installed Next 16.3.8 and indexed the docs bundled in node_modules/next/dist/docs — guidance is version-exact, inside idempotent NEXT-AGENTS-MD markers; re-run after upgrades.
  • .devin/skills/ + agent-skills-state.json — commits the 6 manifest-mapped org skills that were installed locally but uncommitted (install-skills.mjs added the missing discovery-first-development).
  • .agents/skills/ + skills-lock.json — commits the 6 manifest-mapped externals (2 already present, 4 added by install-skills.mjs --external) plus next-dev-loop from vercel/next.js.

Verification performed (live, against next dev on this branch)

  • GET /_next/mcp tools/list → all 8 tools present; get_compilation_issues → {"issues":[]} (Turbopack confirmed)
  • agent-browser@0.38.2 headless Chrome, worktree session: loaded /, clicked Dive Sites nav → /dive-sites rendered correctly; /book Checkfront iframe verified present+visible; /dive-log Metric↔Imperial toggle verified in both directions (70 ft ↔ 21 m, 85 °F ↔ 29 °C)
  • get_errors → {"configErrors":[],"sessionErrors":[]}; vitals LCP 156 ms, CLS 0
  • react suspense → found 2 SSR dynamic holes: Analytics2 (useParams), Footer (useSearchParams) — reported in the pilot doc, not fixed here
  • Console: [Vercel Web Analytics] Failed to load script — tracker blocked in managed browser (env finding)
  • Repo gates: lint ✓ · typecheck ✓ · test:unit 271/271 ✓

Full evidence (screenshots, command log, fleet compatibility matrix, rollout plan): app-foundations pilot report (PR #146) — includes the compatibility matrix across all 16 mapped repos, screenshots, and the staged rollout plan.

Notes for reviewers

  • No existing instruction file modified; AI_INSTRUCTIONS.md, .claude/, .github/ untouched. No duplicate skill names.
  • agent-browser is a dev-machine tool (global npm install + Chrome-for-Testing) — nothing added to package.json or CI.
  • Rollback: revert this PR; AGENTS.md markers are regenerable via the codemod.
  • Two repo-check fixes were needed to land this cleanly: vendored skill dirs are excluded from check:docs (upstream markdown is not project docs) and AGENTS.md is allowlisted in the root-docs hygiene check.

… pilot)

Pilot of the shared agent-skills platform's Next.js layer, selected by the
#144 audit (installed Next 16.3.8, Turbopack default dev, Playwright present):

- AGENTS.md (new): minimal entry point deferring to AI_INSTRUCTIONS.md,
plus the generated docs index from `npx @next/codemod@16.4.0 agents-md`.
The codemod indexed the docs bundled in node_modules/next@16.3.8 — the
  guidance is version-exact, inside idempotent NEXT-AGENTS-MD markers;
re-run after Next upgrades. No existing instruction file was modified.
- Commits the platform-installed skill set that was pending locally:
  .devin/skills (6 org skills + agent-skills-state.json provenance) and
  .agents/skills (6 manifest-mapped externals) with skills-lock.json pins.
- Adds .agents/skills/next-dev-loop from vercel/next.js — the official
  browser dev-loop skill. Verified live against `next dev`: /_next/mcp
exposes all 8 tools (get_compilation_issues answers, confirming
  Turbopack); a real headless-Chrome session via agent-browser 0.38.2
navigated, clicked through /dive-sites and /dive-log, verified the
metric/imperial toggle in both directions, captured screenshots,
and reported zero compile/runtime errors. Full evidence + findings
(incl. two SSR Suspense holes) are documented in the app-foundations
  pilot report (spizeck/app-foundations#144).

No production or deployment changes; no app code touched.
Rollback: revert this commit; the generated AGENTS.md block is
regenerable and skills reinstall from the manifest at any time.

Review details

Systems and components

  • observed — scripts (service) was modified; 2 changed files map to changed impact.
  • observed — AGENTS.md (service) was modified; 1 changed file maps to changed impact.
  • observed — skills-lock.json (service) was modified; 1 changed file maps to changed impact.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in AGENTS.md: Adds repository guidance directing agents to AI_INSTRUCTIONS.md, describing the generated section, and adding a Next.js documentation index with a warning to consult the installed docs and a command to regenerate the index if docs are missing.
  • observed — Modified behavior in scripts/check-doc-links.mjs: The Markdown file filter now excludes paths beginning with .agents/ or .devin/; previously, every tracked .md file was included.
  • observed — Modified behavior in scripts/check-repo-hygiene.mjs: The comment now describes the canonical entry points as a general policy rather than specifying three, and ALLOWED_ROOT_DOCS adds AGENTS.md. The root-Markdown check therefore accepts that file; other unlisted root-level Markdown files still fail.
  • observed — Modified behavior in skills-lock.json: Added a version 1 skills lockfile containing seven named skill records, each with a GitHub source, skill path, and computed hash.

- Line 68: Update the cookie check in isLoggedIn() so it matches the exact auth
cookie name rather than any cookie containing auth=. Parse the cookie pairs and
check each trimmed pair for the auth= prefix, preserving the existing cache
behavior.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/js-cache-storage.md:
- Around line 61-63: Update the storage event handler to clear storageCache when
the event key is null, indicating storage was cleared; otherwise, continue
deleting only the entry for the specific key.
- Around line 65-69: Update the visibility-change invalidation example so cookie
reads do not remain stale after cookie values change: avoid caching
document.cookie unless callers can invalidate it, or reset cookieCache alongside
storageCache. Preserve the existing storageCache invalidation behavior.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/js-early-exit.md:
- Around line 39-45: Update the example’s validation flow to preserve its
last-error selection contract: continue checking users and return the final
encountered validation error rather than exiting on the first invalid user. Keep
the existing email-before-name check order.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/js-flatmap-filter.md:
- Around line 25-27: Update the `users.flatMap` callback and the corresponding
example at lines 40–42 to discard falsy mapped names and emails, preserving the
original `filter(Boolean)` behavior; alternatively, explicitly state that these
outputs are guaranteed to be truthy.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/js-min-max-loop.md:
- Line 44: Update the projects max-timestamp examples to preserve their prior
results: empty input must return undefined, and equal timestamps must select the
same project as before. Adjust the loop and sort implementations accordingly
rather than introducing a null result or differing tie behavior.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/rendering-activity.md:
- Line 26: Update the claim about React’s Activity component to say it preserves
child state while hidden work runs at lower priority; do not claim that it
prevents re-renders, since hidden children can still re-render when props
change.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/rendering-animate-svg-wrapper.md:
- Line 47: Update the SVG animation guidance in this rule to remove the claim
that a wrapper guarantees GPU acceleration; note that browsers determine
compositing and recommend profiling in target browsers before adding a wrapper
for performance.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/rendering-content-visibility.md:
- Line 38: Update the performance statement near the content-visibility guidance
to remove the unsupported fixed 10× speedup claim, or retain it only if
supported by a benchmark of this specific workload. Describe the skipped
off-screen layout and paint without implying a guaranteed speedup.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/rendering-hydration-no-flicker.md:
- Line 69: Update the rendering guidance around the `el.className = theme`
mutation so it does not claim to avoid hydration mismatches; require matching
server and initial client output, or explicitly document and handle the mismatch
when the script adds the class before hydration.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/rendering-resource-hints.md:
- Line 66: Mark the hover example using preloadDashboard as a Client Component
or move its onMouseEnter handler into a Client Component so the interactive
anchor is valid in the Next.js App Router.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/rendering-script-defer-async.md:
- Line 62: Move the beforeInteractive script in the example out of Page and into
RootLayout, where Next.js supports this strategy. Keep scripts scoped to a page
on a page-compatible strategy.
- Line 45: Update the script example so it does not present defer as safe for
streamed React rendering: explicitly scope it to non-streamed HTML, or use
next/script in Next.js and async when unordered execution is safe.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/rendering-usetransition-loading.md:
- Line 54: Wrap the post-await setResults update in another startTransition call
so React treats rendering the results as non-urgent; leave the surrounding
loading and request flow unchanged.
- Line 73: Remove the claim that new Transitions cancel pending requests from
the Interrupt handling guidance. In the fetchResults example, make stale
responses unable to overwrite results for newer queries by ignoring or aborting
outdated requests; do not rely on useTransition for request cancellation.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/rerender-lazy-state-init.md:
- Around line 47-49: Update the `settings` state example so its initializer is
safe during server prerendering: use a server-safe initial value and read from
`localStorage` after mount, or show an explicitly browser-only rendering
pattern. Do not rely on adding `'use client'` alone to prevent server access.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/rerender-memo-with-default-value.md:
- Line 12: Revise the example in “rerender-memo-with-default-value” to remove
the claim that a default parameter such as `() => {}` breaks `memo` when the
parent omits that prop; React compares the unchanged incoming props before
applying the default. Demonstrate an unstable value passed by the parent as the
memoization issue, or explain `NOOP` as a stable default for another purpose
without claiming it fixes memoization.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/server-cache-react.md:
- Around line 40-41: Move the `getUser` cache examples, including the
primitive-argument and same-reference cases, inside a Server Component render so
React’s `cache()` memoization applies and repeated calls demonstrate cache hits.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/server-hoist-static-io.md:
- Line 32: Update both TypeScript image examples using `logoData` so the JSX
`img` `src` receives a type-safe string data URI, or use an explicitly supported
Satori buffer type; ensure neither example assigns an `ArrayBuffer` directly to
`src`.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/server-parallel-fetching.md:
- Line 10: Update the guidance to explain that sequential awaits within a parent
Server Component can create a request waterfall, rather than claiming Server
Components execute sequentially in a tree. Use the Page and Sidebar example to
show that awaiting fetchHeader before returning the tree delays Sidebar, while
noting that layouts and pages otherwise render in parallel by default.

Review comments at
@.agents/skills/vercel-react-best-practices/rules/server-serialization.md:
- Line 10: Update the React Server/Client boundary description to accurately
characterize the RSC payload as a compact binary representation that includes
props passed to Client Components, rather than claiming all object properties
are stringified and embedded in HTML and later requests. Preserve the advice to
pass only fields the client uses.
- Line 20: Split the Page and Profile examples into separate modules, and place
the client-component directive at the beginning of the Profile module so it
establishes the Server-to-Client boundary.

Review comments at
@.devin/skills/discovery-first-development/references/guided-testing.md:
- Around line 11-12: Update the scenario guidance in the “Every scenario” text
to say that seven fields are required and “Evidence to capture” is optional;
clarify that omitting a required field pushes work back onto the tester.

Review comments at
@.devin/skills/discovery-first-development/templates/guided-test-plan.md:
- Line 17: Update the “Scenario 1” and “Scenario 2” headings in the guided test
plan template from H3 to H2 so they are sibling sections under the document’s
H1.

Review comments at @.devin/skills/production-readiness/SKILL.md:
- Around line 22-24: Update the workflow hygiene guidance in the
production-readiness skill to limit concurrency cancellation to supersedable CI
runs and explicitly preserve non-cancelable, per-deployment validation,
consistent with production-smoke.yml.

Review comments at @.devin/skills/ui-ux-standards/SKILL.md:
- Around line 36-37: Update the keyboard-path guidance in the “Keyboard paths
work” section to distinguish modal dialogs, which contain focus, from menus,
which manage focus among items and allow Tab or Shift+Tab to move focus out. Do
not describe ordinary menus as trapping focus.

Windows checkouts (core.autocrlf=true, no .gitattributes) check the
committed skills out as CRLF, making install-skills.mjs --check report
every org skill LOCALLY-MODIFIED — a false positive that would mask
real local edits. Scope eol=lf to the vendored paths only.

…kills

Review against the app-foundations skills manifest and actual Firebase
usage in this repo:

- firebase-basics + firebase-auth-basics are manifest-approved externals
for seasaba-web but are already installed in .agents/skills by the
shared platform rollout (PR #249). Keeping second copies in
.devin/skills trips the installer's DUPLICATE check, so they are
removed here; .agents remains their canonical home.
- Kept (relocated to .agents/skills, the conventional external-skill
  home): firebase-firestore, firestore-rules-creation, and
firebase-security-rules-auditor. The dive-log feature reads Firestore
(lib/firestore/) and its collections sit behind console-managed
security rules, so SDK + rules skills are the relevant set.
- Dropped as not-applicable to this web app: firebase-ai-logic-basics,
  firebase-app-hosting-basics (deploys go to Vercel),
  firebase-crashlytics, firebase-data-connect,
  firebase-remote-config-basics, firebase-hosting-basics,
  extension-to-functions-codebase, xcode-project-setup.

Also excludes vendored skill dirs (.agents/, .devin/) from
check-doc-links — same change as #249 — since upstream-managed
markdown legitimately references paths that do not exist in this repo.

Verified for final review — no changes needed on this branch:

  • install-skills.mjs --check (app-foundations, latest main) against this head: clean — all 6 org skills OK, all 6 manifest externals INSTALLED in .agents/skills.
  • skills-lock.json ↔ .agents/skills/ consistent (7 entries, no extras); agent-skills-state.json file hashes all match on disk.
  • No duplicate skill names across .agents/ and .devin/ (simulated merge with Add official Firebase agent skills for Devin #246's reworked head: zero dupes).
  • check:docs, check:env, check:hygiene, lint all pass locally; AGENTS.md docs index was generated from next@16.3.8 which matches package-lock.json.
  • All 6 CodeRabbit review threads are resolved — all were vendored upstream content (firebase/agent-skills), correctly handled via the vendored-content policy rather than local patches.

Recommended merge order: this PR first, then #246 (its skills-lock.json resolves as the union — verified via test merge), then spizeck/app-foundations#157.
