Summary

Adds a staff-facing payments workspace at /admin/payments so brewery staff can collect one-off card charges (brewery tours, tour + tasting, extra guests, private tours, ad-hoc) that do not fit the B2B beer-sales workflow.

Architecture: staff creates an internal payments/{id} record → server creates a Stripe Checkout Session (hosted payment page) → the customer pays on Stripe → POST /api/webhooks/stripe reconciles the final state transactionally. Checkout was chosen over Payment Element because the card surface lives entirely on Stripe: no publishable key, no Stripe.js bundle, no CSP change, and the session url doubles as a shareable link (copy / QR / open) covering both counter and remote collection. The app never sees, stores, or logs card data.

Closes #155

Changes

  • payments/{clientRequestId} records + events subcollection (append-only history), stripeEvents dedupe markers — all deny-all in firestore.rules (Admin SDK only)
  • /api/admin/payments create/list, [id] detail, [id]/cancel, [id]/refresh, [id]/qr — all behind requireAdminActor; server-side validation in integer minor units, USD-only, bounded max
  • /api/webhooks/stripe — raw-body signature verification (STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET), transactional dedupe + terminal-state machine for checkout.session.{completed,expired,async_payment_succeeded,async_payment_failed}; paid payments enrich with receipt URL + brand/last4
  • Take-payment UI: canonical TOUR_PRODUCTS price quick-picks with staff override, explicit amount confirmation step, copy/QR/open payment link, auto-poll + manual refresh, cancel with confirm; recent-payments list + detail with history and test-mode badge
  • Duplicate protection: clientRequestId is the document id and the Stripe idempotency key; replayed creates return the existing record instead of double-charging
  • /pay/complete + /pay/cancelled static, noindex return pages; robots.txt disallows /pay
  • Docs: docs/admin/payments.md staff guide, docs/TECHNICAL.md §5/§11/§13, deployment env scopes + preview notes, observability event names, credential-rotation §H
  • Deps: stripe@^22.6.2 (avoids 2-day-old 23.0.0), qrcode + @types/qrcode
  • Tests: unit coverage for validation/state-machine/session-spec/idempotency (tests/lib/payments-common.test.ts), deny-all rules tests for the three new collections, a11y/Playwright coverage for the workspace

Verification

  • npx tsc --noEmit
  • npm run lint (exit 0; emits a pre-existing TSSatisfiesExpression jsx-ast-utils parser notice)
  • npm test — 458/458 pass
  • npm run test:rules — 36/36 pass (Firestore + Storage emulator)
  • npm run build
  • npx playwright test — 137/137 pass
  • npm run check:md-links
  • npm run check:react-versions

Not verified: real Stripe test-mode E2E — no STRIPE_* credentials exist in this environment. Required before go-live: set STRIPE_SECRET_KEY (test) + register a webhook endpoint → create payment → pay with test card → confirm webhook flips record to Paid → confirm receipt email + duplicate-event idempotency. No live charge was or will be performed.

Risk / deployment notes

  • New env vars (server-only): STRIPE_SECRET_KEY (sk_test_* dev/preview, sk_live_* prod) and STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET (per-endpoint signing secret). Deliberately no NEXT_PUBLIC_ Stripe key.
  • Stripe Dashboard setup: register https://deepdivebrewing.com/api/webhooks/stripe subscribed to checkout.session.completed, checkout.session.expired, checkout.session.async_payment_succeeded, checkout.session.async_payment_failed.
  • Firestore: firestore.rules must be deployed with the release; no new indexes required (list query is orderBy(createdAt) on a single collection).
  • next.config.ts adds stripe to serverExternalPackages (same packaging rationale as firebase-admin).
  • Refunds and QuickBooks integration are explicitly deferred; the schema carries forward-compatible identifiers.
  • No secrets, credentials, or private data were committed.

Reviewer's Guide

Implements a staff-only one-off payments workspace backed by server-created Stripe Checkout Sessions, with idempotent payment creation, authenticated admin operations, transactional webhook reconciliation and deduplication, customer return pages, operational documentation, and comprehensive unit, rules, and accessibility coverage. Real Stripe test-mode end-to-end verification remains a deployment prerequisite.

Explanation

[#155] The payment workspace, protected APIs, server-side validation, Checkout flow, internal records, and signed-webhook reconciliation address the main coding objectives. The available test inventory and summaries show payment-state and webhook-orchestration tests, but no automated test that accepts a valid Stripe signature and rejects an invalid one. This leaves #155's explicit webhook-signature testing criterion unmet.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

[#155] The issue treats refunds as future work and does not require refund processing. The PR adds a refund API at app/api/admin/payments/[id]/refund/route.ts, refund operations in lib/payments-admin.ts and lib/payments-common.ts, refund UI, and refund documentation. These implement a separate operation beyond the requested payment collection and reconciliation scope.

Staff-facing payments workspace at /admin/payments for one-off card
charges (tours, tastings, extra guests, ad-hoc) that do not fit the B2B
beer-sales workflow. Card entry lives entirely on Stripe-hosted Checkout
— the app never sees, stores, or logs PAN/CVC.

- payments/{clientRequestId} record + events subcollection, deny-all
  client rules; stripeEvents dedupe markers
- /api/admin/payments* behind requireAdminActor; server-side amount
validation in integer minor units; Stripe idempotency keyed by the
  internal payment id
- /api/webhooks/stripe verifies signatures and reconciles
  checkout.session.* transactionally with a terminal-state machine
- Take-payment form with canonical tour price quick-picks (staff
override), amount confirmation, copy/QR/open payment link, polling +
  manual refresh, cancel
- Payment detail with history, receipt link, and safe card brand/last4
- /pay/complete + /pay/cancelled noindex return pages
- stripe@^22 + qrcode deps; docs for staff workflow, ops, rotation

…bhook payloads

Bring PR #156 up to the shared payment standard (app-foundations
standards/payments.md):

- Webhook events are now hints only: after signature verification we
extract just the event/session ids, re-fetch the canonical Checkout
Session, and let canonical status/payment_status drive the transition.
Unsettled canonical state defers with a 500 so Stripe redelivers.
- Settlement reconciliation: a paid transition applies only when the
canonical session id/amount/currency match the stored snapshot.
Mismatches quarantine — reconciliationIssue flag + audit event, never
silently paid, never auto-corrected; the flag clears when a verified
  paid lands.
- Checkout URLs are pinned to https://checkout.stripe.com/.
- Stripe SDK failures cross the boundary as PaymentProviderError (safe
message + machine code only; no raw payloads in responses or logs).
- sessions.expire carries an idempotency key; webhook replays short-
circuit before the canonical fetch via a cheap marker pre-check.
- Replay-mismatch comparison extracted to a tested pure helper.
- Live Stripe keys are refused in dev/preview environments.
- Docs corrected: receipt email pre-fills Checkout; automatic receipts
  require Stripe Dashboard settings.

Address review feedback on PR #156 — deployment.md repeated the
per-scope Stripe key and webhook-secret guidance; link to the
authoritative rotation doc instead.

Sandbox E2E on the preview deployment exposed two gaps:

- Checkout success/cancel URLs always pointed at the canonical
production host, where /pay/* does not exist until this branch ships,
so a preview test landed on a 404 after paying. Add
resolveCheckoutReturnBaseUrl() which derives the return origin from
trusted Vercel deployment env (VERCEL_BRANCH_URL ?? VERCEL_URL on
previews), keeps production canonical, and never accepts
  caller-supplied origins.

- Checkout inherited the Stripe account's automatic payment methods,
offering delayed-settlement options (BNPL, bank debit) that a counter
tool cannot safely expose — a customer could leave while the charge
is still pending. Constrain payment_method_types to ["card"], matching
the Sea Saba reference; the async_payment_* webhook handlers stay
  wired defensively.

Also documents the Vercel Deployment Protection lesson for preview
webhooks (third-party deliveries get 401 until a narrow bypass is
added) and the webhook-vs-manual-refresh history attribution.

CodeRabbit nit: clearing NEXT_PUBLIC_SITE_URL in the test cannot undo
the import-time module constant — assert the contract (production
returns the canonical resolved site origin) instead.

…unbook

- Reword "card-only" comments/tests to the card-payment-rail policy:
Link/Apple Pay/Google Pay ride the card rail and may appear by
  eligibility; delayed/BNPL/bank methods stay unwired.
- Clarify receipt_email supplies the address only — delivery is governed
by Stripe account email settings (test mode never sends mail).
- Document ignored-vs-duplicate webhook semantics at the route and add a
regression test for the manual-refresh race: first delivery of an event
on an already-paid record is `ignored` (no writes), a resend of the same
event id is `duplicate` (still no writes, no regression).
- Add docs/operations/payments.md: payment-method policy, receipts,
webhook result semantics, end-to-end webhook verification procedure,
API-version pinning note, Stripe branding checklist, and the manual
production activation checklist. Cross-link from admin/deployment/
credential-rotation/observability docs and README; record the two-API-
  version split in TECHNICAL.md.

Adds a deliberately narrow, server-authorized full-refund workflow:
a durable Firestore claim (paid -> refunding, retries resume), canonical
PaymentIntent verification before any provider call, a deterministic
refund:<paymentId> Stripe idempotency key, and a commit/revert phase that
converges on already-refunded Stripe state instead of double-refunding.

Includes the typed-REFUND confirmation dialog, refund status/history UI,
collected-today exclusion for refunded payments, 29 domain tests, a
Playwright dialog test, and refund docs in admin/ops/technical guides.

Address CodeRabbit findings on the refund workflow:

- Scope the Stripe idempotency key per claim attempt
(refund:<id>:<attempt>) — a saved provider error under one key must not
doom legitimate retries after a released claim.
- Commit `refunded` only on Stripe `succeeded`: pending/requires_action
refunds stay `refunding` with the refund id persisted, and retries
reconcile the canonical Refund.status rather than trusting
  amount_refunded.
- Reject while an in-flight refund exists on the charge — a foreign
pending refund must settle before anything creates another refund.
- Track the refund window in the UI with an effect-driven clock (fixes a
react-hooks/purity violation and stale eligibility across the 1-hour
boundary), and re-check eligibility at submit time.
- Scope the collected-today doc claim to app-issued refunds — Dashboard
  refunds are not automatically reconciled.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not present the Checkout return as proof of payment.

lib/payments-admin.ts sends completed Checkout sessions to this static page. Stripe allows a Checkout Session to be complete while payment_status is still unpaid, including card-only sessions. The page does not read the session or payment record, so it can display “Payment received” while webhook reconciliation records processing.

Use language that confirms checkout completion without confirming settlement.

- TECHNICAL.md defers the exact canonical refund checks to the linked
operations guide (the metadata check only rejects a present-but-different
paymentId, so repeating it overstated the rule).
- Correct the no-refund-webhook conclusion: card refunds can be
asynchronous; reconciliation is driven by staff retries checking
canonical Refund.status, not by claiming refunds are synchronous.
