feat(labels): landing page for scanned label QR codes - #3685
Adds the public landing page that every RegEngine label QR code points at: /01/{gtin}/10/{lot}/21/{serial} (the GS1 Digital Link path printed by services/graph/app/routers/labels.py). With TRACEABILITY_DOMAIN moving to https://regengine.co in fix(domains): use regengine.co instead of third-party RegEngine domains #3679, that URL returned 404, so a scanned label went nowhere.
The page shows only what the code itself encodes (GTIN, lot, serial, whether the GTIN check digit matches), says custody records need a sign-in, and links "Trace this lot" to /trace?tlc=<lot>. /trace now prefills the lot from ?tlc=. A GTIN that is not 14 digits, or an empty lot or serial, returns HTTP 404. A malformed percent escape (/10/100%/21/x) never reaches the page's own check: on Node, Next's route matcher raises a decode error and answers 400; on Vercel, decode-query-path-parameter swallows it and the page renders the raw segment (that is what the decodeSegment catch exists for). The page is noindex and robots.ts disallows /01/.
Next 16.4.2 decodes each segment once (route-matcher.js:19), re-encodes it for the page's params (get-dynamic-param.js:58) and passes generateMetadata the decoded value (resolve-metadata.js:173). So the page decodes exactly once and generateMetadata calls parseLabelLink(..., { alreadyDecoded: true }).
Verified on the Vercel preview: /10/LOT-2024%2F001/ returns 200 with "Lot LOT-2024/001" (Vercel keeps %2F as one segment), and an invalid GTIN returns 404. One limitation found there: Vercel's router decodes the path once more before Next, so a lot containing a literal escape sequence loses it on both the page and the title (/10/100%252F/ renders "100/"; locally it renders "100%2F"). The frontend cannot recover it, so the guard is at issuance: API change — TraceabilityInfo.lot_number in services/graph/app/routers/labels.py now rejects a literal %, an empty or whitespace-only lot, the dot-segments . and .., and (RE-SEC-004) ^, ~ and control bytes (422 from POST .../labels/batch), so no label that would scan to the wrong lot, to no page at all, or carry a ZPL command into the print stream is printed. The ZPL gap was pre-existing: quote() leaves ~ unescaped and the lot was the one tenant string reaching ^FD field data without _reject_zpl_unsafe. Lots without a literal % are unaffected. Negative-path tests in services/graph/tests/test_labels_security.py.
Open data question, not decided here: labels.py:205 builds the label service's own TLC as {gtin}-{lot_number} and puts only lot_number in AI 10. The page labels the row "Lot (AI 10)" and prefills /trace with that bare lot. If tenant CTE records key tlc_code on the composite, the prefill will not match and the prefill should become {gtin}-{lot}.

Security fix (input validation at label issuance; see the % note above)
Test Plan
Unit tests added/updated: label-link.test.ts (decode, validation, href), label-link-page.test.tsx (render, 404, metadata), prefill case in trace.test.tsx
Integration tests pass: full frontend suite, 189 files / 1551 passed; npm run lint 0 errors (60 pre-existing no-console warnings in e2e specs), design-lint clean; next build ok
Manual testing performed: dev server renders a valid label with the decoded lot and the /trace?tlc=LOT-2024%2F001 link, an invalid GTIN returns HTTP 404, single column at phone width
Adversarial review: 4 lenses (security, Next 16 API, decode semantics, tests and copy), 8 findings each judged by 3 independent refuters. Confirmed and fixed here: generateMetadata double-decode (now alreadyDecoded), the row label and description wording, an order-dependent notFound assertion, and a missing decode-once test. Confirmed and deferred (auth code, separate PR): the follow-up below. Refuted 3–0: robots disallow vs noindex, serial/lot character-set lure.

Related Issues
Relates to #3679 (label QR default moves to regengine.co). Both should be on main before new labels are printed: #3679 points labels here, this PR makes the URL resolve.
Follow-up, not in this PR (auth redirect code): a signed-out scanner pressing "Trace this lot" is sent to /login?next=%2Ftrace with the ?tlc= dropped (proxy.ts sets next to the pathname only, three sites), and the email-code path then lands on /dashboard because VerifyClient.tsx:66 hardcodes it. So the /trace prefill in this PR only helps a browser that already holds a session. Fix belongs in proxy.ts (carry request.nextUrl.search into next; safeNextPath already accepts a same-origin query) and VerifyClient.tsx (honour next), with a proxy test.
Medium Risk
Changes label batch validation (may reject lots that previously printed) and adds a public URL surface tied to scan/decode semantics; landing page does not query tenant data.
Overview
Adds the public GS1 Digital Link landing page at /01/{gtin}/10/{lot}/21/{serial} so label QR codes (printed by labels.py) resolve instead of 404. The page shows only what the code encodes (GTIN, lot, serial, check-digit result), is noindex with robots.ts disallowing /01/, 404s invalid segments, and links Trace this lot to /trace?tlc=….
Introduces parseLabelLink / traceHrefForLot to handle Next’s split decode behavior (page vs generateMetadata). /trace now prefills the TLC field from ?tlc=, following query changes on client navigation without wiping user edits unless a new non-empty tlc arrives.
Label issuance guard:TraceabilityInfo.lot_number now rejects empty/whitespace lots, literal % (double-decode on Vercel would mis-route), . / .., and ZPL-unsafe characters, returning 422 before Neo4j—plus security and frontend tests for decode, 404, metadata, and trace prefill.

Every label printed by services/graph/app/routers/labels.py carries a GS1
Digital Link QR code pointing at
<TRACEABILITY_DOMAIN>/01/{gtin}/10/{lot}/21/{serial}. With that domain
moving to https://regengine.co (PR #3679) the URL returned 404, so a scan
went nowhere.
- frontend/src/app/01/[gtin]/10/[lot]/21/[serial]/page.tsx: public server
page, no auth, no data fetch. Shows the GTIN, lot, serial and whether
the GTIN check digit matches, says custody records need a sign-in, and
links "Trace this lot" to /trace?tlc=<lot>. Segments no label could
carry (GTIN not 14 digits, empty or oversized lot/serial) return 404.
noindex, and robots.ts disallows /01/.
- frontend/src/lib/label-link.ts: segment parsing. Measured on Next
16.4.2: page.tsx receives the segments still percent-encoded while
generateMetadata receives them decoded, so decode once with a no-op on
already-decoded input. A lot containing a literal escape (100%2F) would
decode twice in the tab title only.
- frontend/src/app/trace/page.tsx: prefill the TLC from ?tlc= so the
link above lands ready to run.
- tests: label-link unit tests, page render/404/metadata tests, and a
prefill case in the existing trace page test.
Verified: full frontend suite 189 files, 1551 passed; npm run lint 0
errors (60 pre-existing no-console warnings) and design-lint clean;
next build ok. In the dev server a valid label renders the decoded lot
and the /trace link, an invalid GTIN returns HTTP 404, and the page is a
single column at phone width.

Next 16.4.2 decodes each segment once (route-matcher.js:19), re-encodes
it for the page's params (get-dynamic-param.js:58) and passes
generateMetadata the decoded value (resolve-metadata.js:173); none of it
is NODE_ENV-gated and `next start` measured the same. generateMetadata
now calls parseLabelLink with alreadyDecoded, so a lot that itself
contains an escape sequence (100%2F) renders correctly in the title too.
- Row renamed "Lot (AI 10)": labels.py:205 builds its own TLC as
{gtin}-{lot_number} and puts only lot_number in AI 10.
- Description says the check-digit result is computed here, not read
from the code.
- Tests: decode-once and alreadyDecoded cases; notFound mock cleared per
test so the call count no longer depends on order.
- Corrects 91c4f45's "lands ready to run": the /trace prefill only
helps a browser that already holds a session. A signed-out scanner
loses ?tlc= at the login redirect (proxy.ts sets next to the pathname
only) and the email-code path lands on /dashboard. Auth code, so it is
a separate PR.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The changes add GS1 label parsing and a public landing page for valid labels. The page displays label fields and provides a trace link for the lot. The trace page initializes its lot input from the tlc query parameter and updates it when a changed nonempty parameter appears. The graph label model rejects empty lot numbers and lot numbers containing %. Tests cover parsing, label rendering, metadata, trace input behavior, and lot validation.
Valid label scans now reach the landing page and trace prefill. Labels with a dot-only lot cannot be scanned, and the trace page trims whitespace from a scanned lot before querying. Both are narrow cases that should be fixed or accepted, and neither blocks the change.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 14626
The public page displays identifiers supplied in the URL without retrieving private custody records. Tracing remains a separate, user-initiated operation with existing access controls. Remaining uncertainty concerns identifier compatibility across deployment environments and previously issued labels.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — Unauthenticated visitors can supply identifiers for local public rendering. Private-record access is not performed by that page. The existing trace endpoints require a current user and tenant context; a TLC query without a facility filter uses tenant-wide rather than supplier-specific selection, an unchanged downstream behavior.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new link carries a query value, not credentials or tenant authority. The trace route remains in the authenticated-route policy, and trace and export handlers retain their session checks. The edge gate’s opaque-cookie branch checks presence only, so backend authorization remains necessary; this branch is unchanged by the PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Rejected lot values fail request-model validation before issuance can create lot state or reserve serials. For accepted values, tenant selection, reservation, generation, and response behavior are unchanged. Existing post-reservation interruption, retry, and concurrency guarantees were not established by runtime evidence and are not attributed to this PR.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Validate the deployed issuance-to-scan-to-trace identity contract, including historical percent-containing labels and the distinction between bare lot and composed TLC, before treating the scan handoff as an authoritative record locator.

Preserve the scanned lot exactly in trace and export requests.
The label service accepts lot_number without trimming it. A QR lot such as " LOT-1 " reaches the new prefilled input with those spaces, but both handlers call trim() before sending tlc_code. The requests then select a different TLC or return no CTEs or FDA spreadsheet records. Preserve the identifier for both requests; use trimming only to decide whether the input is blank. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions, “Traceability lot codes (TLCs) must be preserved exactly as received (no trimming, case-folding, or re-generation).”

Review follow-ups on PR #3685 (CodeRabbit):
- label-link.ts: labels.py caps neither the lot nor the serial, so a
64-character cap here could 404 a label that was already printed.
Removed; non-empty is the only check. Test pins a 200-character lot
and serial.
- trace/page.tsx: the TLC input now follows a changed ?tlc= while the
page stays mounted (client navigation) without clearing a typed lot.
Adjusted during render per react.dev, not in an effect, because
eslint's react-hooks/set-state-in-effect flags the effect form.
Declined, with reasons on the threads: prefilling `{gtin}-{lot}`
(synthesized TLCs were removed in #1104 as non-compliant with FSMA
§1.1320, see entity_resolution.py `_build_tlc`); the login-redirect
`next` query loss (auth code, separate change); trimming tlc_code (the
backend strips it too, supplier_compliance_routes.py:445).

CodeRabbit on PR #3685: with the render-time sync, going from ?tlc=A to
no parameter left seenTlcParam at "A", so typing another lot and then
returning to ?tlc=A kept the typed lot. Now every parameter change is
recorded, including to none, while only a non-empty value replaces what
is in the box. Test added for exactly that sequence.
Declined on the same review: resolving the QR lot to a "stored TLC"
before tracing. No lookup exists on this data path (the label batch's
composite is a Neo4j Lot key; the FDA export reads Postgres CTE rows),
and #1104 keeps TLCs originator-assigned.

Measured on the Vercel preview of f6e71a1 through the repo's
preview-access link: /10/100%252F/ renders lot "100/" (title and trace
link) and /10/A%2525B/ renders "A%B", while /10/LOT-2024%2F001/ returns
200 with "LOT-2024/001" and an invalid GTIN returns 404. Vercel's router
decodes the path once before Next decodes again, so a lot containing a
literal escape sequence loses it on both the page and the metadata path;
locally (next dev, next start) the same URLs decode once. Lots without a
literal "%" are unaffected, and %2F routes as one segment.
The frontend cannot recover the original, so the comment now says the
guard belongs at issuance (labels.py) instead of claiming both paths are
exact. No behavior change.

API change: TraceabilityInfo.lot_number (POST .../labels/batch) now
returns 422 for a lot containing "%" or an empty lot.
Why: the lot is printed in the label QR as a GS1 Digital Link segment,
quoted with urllib.parse.quote. On Vercel a literal escape sequence is
decoded twice (its router decodes once, then Next's
decode-query-path-parameter decodes again), measured on the PR #3685
preview: /10/100%252F/ renders "100/". The frontend cannot recover the
original, so the label must not be printed. An empty lot would print
/10//21/, which the landing page already treats as not a label.
Negative-path tests: "%2F", "%25", bare "%" and "" are rejected; lots
with slashes, spaces and dots are accepted unchanged. The landing-page
comment now points at this validator.

urllib.parse.quote(lot, safe="") leaves "." unescaped, so these two
values print as /10/./21/<serial> or /10/../21/<serial>, and the browser
normalizes the segment away before the request is sent: the label could
never reach the landing page. Reject them at issuance like "%" and the
empty lot (CodeRabbit on PR #3685). Lots such as "..." or ".A" are not
dot-segments and still pass.

Test-only; no running code changed.
- trace.test.tsx "follows a changed ?tlc= ... without clearing a typed
lot": the body now types a lot before the parameter is removed and
asserts the typed value survives, so the name matches the check.
- test_labels_security.py: one request through the router per rejected
lot ("%", empty, "..") asserts a 422 whose detail names lot_number and
that Neo4j is never constructed. The route's tenant and API-key
dependencies are overridden so the request reaches body validation.
- label-link-page.test.tsx: the 404 case now covers an empty lot and an
empty serial, not only a bad GTIN.
- label-link.test.ts: the "no length cap" case uses 5,000 characters,
far beyond any cap a reviewer might reintroduce.

…y lots
RE-SEC-004 gap, pre-existing: the quoted lot lands in the ZPL stream
inside ^FDMM,...^FS, and urllib.parse.quote leaves "~" (the ZPL
control-command prefix) unescaped, so a lot like "A~JAB" printed a
literal ~JA into field data. description and plu already ran through
_reject_zpl_unsafe; lot_number was the one tenant string that did not.
The new lot_number validator now calls it. "^" and control bytes were
already escaped by quote(), so "~" was the live vector; the shared guard
covers all three consistently.
Also rejects a whitespace-only lot, which printed /10/%20/21/ and
rendered a blank lot on the landing page.
Tests: "A~JAB", "A^XA" and a control byte are rejected with the guard's
message; " " and "\t" are rejected as empty; the router-level 422 case
now includes "A~JAB". A comment in label-link.test.ts notes that its
"%"-bearing cases cover hand-typed URLs, not printable labels.

Muse Code 1.4.14 reviewed the full diff at 949ad8c3a in two read-only packages (running code: label-link.ts, the /01 page, trace/page.tsx, robots.ts, labels.py; tests: the three frontend test files and test_labels_security.py), with write, shell and web tools disabled. Verdict on both: PASS, no blocking defect. Claude Code posted this on Christopher's account at his request.
At the previous head 207208abd, Muse had blocked the test package on one test whose name promised a typed-lot scenario its body never exercised; that test now types a value and asserts it survives. In parallel, five Claude agents read the repository at 207208abd through separate lenses (decode paths checked against the installed Next 16.4.2 sources, XSS/injection/open redirect, the backend validator, public claims and SEO, test honesty), with a skeptic assigned to any blocking claim; none was raised. Their non-blocking findings (ZPL ~ reaching the print stream through lot_number, whitespace-only lots, the 400-vs-404 wording) were fixed in 949ad8c3a, and Claude re-checked that delta: the validator uses the same _reject_zpl_unsafe helper as description and plu, raises ValueError so pydantic returns 422, and the new tests cover ~, ^, control bytes and a route-level 422.

Decoding happens exactly once on both the page path (re-encoded params) and the generateMetadata path (decoded params); heading, <title> and the /trace href always agree for the same URL. A malformed escape never throws into a 500.
Every rendered value is a React text node; the trace link encodes the lot with encodeURIComponent; ?tlc= flows only into input state and the API filter, never into an href, redirect or script.
notFound() runs before any render for a non-14-digit GTIN or an empty lot or serial; metadata is noindex, nofollow; robots.ts disallows /01/ without disturbing existing rules.
The page claims nothing the URL does not encode and says custody records need a sign-in.
Non-blocking follow-ups
A page-level test for a GTIN with a bad check digit (renders "Does not match", not 404) would close the one display branch no test drives.
The route-level 422 test covers "100%2F", "", "..", "A~JAB"; whitespace-only and control bytes are asserted only at the model level.
test_accepts_lots_that_scan_back_unchanged checks validator acceptance, not an encode/decode round trip (that lives in TestURLEncoding); rename or extend.
The frontend accepts, for display only, lots that labels.py can never issue (whitespace, %, ., ..); harmless by design, since the page asserts nothing about genuineness.
/trace is an authenticated route, so a signed-out scanner loses the ?tlc= prefill through the login redirect (already listed as a follow-up in the PR body).

Summary
/01/{gtin}/10/{lot}/21/{serial}(the GS1 Digital Link path printed byservices/graph/app/routers/labels.py). WithTRACEABILITY_DOMAINmoving tohttps://regengine.coin fix(domains): use regengine.co instead of third-party RegEngine domains #3679, that URL returned 404, so a scanned label went nowhere./trace?tlc=<lot>./tracenow prefills the lot from?tlc=. A GTIN that is not 14 digits, or an empty lot or serial, returns HTTP 404. A malformed percent escape (/10/100%/21/x) never reaches the page's own check: on Node, Next's route matcher raises a decode error and answers 400; on Vercel,decode-query-path-parameterswallows it and the page renders the raw segment (that is what thedecodeSegmentcatch exists for). The page isnoindexandrobots.tsdisallows/01/.route-matcher.js:19), re-encodes it for the page'sparams(get-dynamic-param.js:58) and passesgenerateMetadatathe decoded value (resolve-metadata.js:173). So the page decodes exactly once andgenerateMetadatacallsparseLabelLink(..., { alreadyDecoded: true })./10/LOT-2024%2F001/returns 200 with "Lot LOT-2024/001" (Vercel keeps%2Fas one segment), and an invalid GTIN returns 404. One limitation found there: Vercel's router decodes the path once more before Next, so a lot containing a literal escape sequence loses it on both the page and the title (/10/100%252F/renders "100/"; locally it renders "100%2F"). The frontend cannot recover it, so the guard is at issuance: API change —TraceabilityInfo.lot_numberinservices/graph/app/routers/labels.pynow rejects a literal%, an empty or whitespace-only lot, the dot-segments.and.., and (RE-SEC-004)^,~and control bytes (422 fromPOST .../labels/batch), so no label that would scan to the wrong lot, to no page at all, or carry a ZPL command into the print stream is printed. The ZPL gap was pre-existing:quote()leaves~unescaped and the lot was the one tenant string reaching^FDfield data without_reject_zpl_unsafe. Lots without a literal%are unaffected. Negative-path tests inservices/graph/tests/test_labels_security.py.labels.py:205builds the label service's own TLC as{gtin}-{lot_number}and puts onlylot_numberin AI 10. The page labels the row "Lot (AI 10)" and prefills/tracewith that bare lot. If tenant CTE records keytlc_codeon the composite, the prefill will not match and the prefill should become{gtin}-{lot}.Type of Change

Relates to #3679 (label QR default moves to
regengine.co). Both should be onmainbefore new labels are printed: #3679 points labels here, this PR makes the URL resolve.Follow-up, not in this PR (auth redirect code): a signed-out scanner pressing "Trace this lot" is sent to
/login?next=%2Ftracewith the?tlc=dropped (proxy.tssetsnextto the pathname only, three sites), and the email-code path then lands on/dashboardbecauseVerifyClient.tsx:66hardcodes it. So the/traceprefill in this PR only helps a browser that already holds a session. Fix belongs inproxy.ts(carryrequest.nextUrl.searchintonext;safeNextPathalready accepts a same-origin query) andVerifyClient.tsx(honournext), with a proxy test.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
Note
Medium Risk
Changes label batch validation (may reject lots that previously printed) and adds a public URL surface tied to scan/decode semantics; landing page does not query tenant data.
Overview
Adds the public GS1 Digital Link landing page at
/01/{gtin}/10/{lot}/21/{serial}so label QR codes (printed bylabels.py) resolve instead of 404. The page shows only what the code encodes (GTIN, lot, serial, check-digit result), is noindex withrobots.tsdisallowing/01/, 404s invalid segments, and links Trace this lot to/trace?tlc=….Introduces
parseLabelLink/traceHrefForLotto handle Next’s split decode behavior (page vsgenerateMetadata)./tracenow prefills the TLC field from?tlc=, following query changes on client navigation without wiping user edits unless a new non-emptytlcarrives.Label issuance guard:
TraceabilityInfo.lot_numbernow rejects empty/whitespace lots, literal%(double-decode on Vercel would mis-route),./.., and ZPL-unsafe characters, returning 422 before Neo4j—plus security and frontend tests for decode, 404, metadata, and trace prefill.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 949ad8c.
