fix(contact): cap email length before EMAIL_RE (code-scanning #61) - #3627
Rejects emails longer than 254 chars (RFC 5321) as invalid_email before EMAIL_RE runs on unauthenticated input. New data-free test: 254 accepted, 255 rejected, 100k hostile string rejected fast. Local: vitest contact tests 15 passed; eslint clean. Alert not dismissed.
Note
Low Risk
Small validation guard on a public contact endpoint; behavior for normal emails unchanged, with tests locking in the fast-fail path.
Overview Hardens /api/contact against polynomial ReDoS (code-scanning alert #61) by rejecting emails longer than 254 characters (RFC 5321) with invalid_emailbefore the pragmatic EMAIL_RE runs on unauthenticated POST bodies.
Adds Vitest coverage: 254-char addresses still succeed, 255-char fail, and a ~100k hostile string is rejected without invoking RegExp.prototype.test or the webhook fetch.

Walkthrough
The contact API now rejects email inputs longer than 254 characters before applying the existing email regex. Tests cover a 254-character address, a 255-character address returning HTTP 400 with invalid_email, and a very long address that does not reach regex validation or trigger a fetch call. The tests mock the contact webhook and clean up environment and global mocks.
The contact validation change is bounded and mergeable; no actionable risk remains.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to afaf0
The change narrows accepted input without expanding access, privileges, or delivery destinations. Oversized email addresses are rejected before regex evaluation, using the existing error response. No material security regression was identified in the reviewed change.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed exposure is bounded to input processing and delivery eligibility in the existing public contact handler. The guard removes oversized email values from regex evaluation and downstream submission flow without granting callers additional authority over providers, credentials, or recipients.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Caller-supplied email data crosses the validation boundary before becoming webhook payload or an email reply-to value. The new short-circuit condition strengthens that boundary. Existing honeypot and per-instance rate-limit controls remain in their previous positions; the throttle is explicitly best-effort rather than a global abuse limit.

Explanation
The title names the primary change: the contact endpoint now caps email length before EMAIL_RE runs, which matches the route.ts change and the new length tests. It also references code-scanning #61, which identifies the alert being fixed. It is specific and concise, and a teammate scanning history would understand the main change.

Explanation
The description summarizes the change clearly: emails over 254 characters are rejected as invalid_email before EMAIL_RE runs, and the new tests cover 254 accepted, 255 rejected, and a 100k hostile string rejected quickly. It also reports local test and lint results and states that the alert was not dismissed. The template sections are missing: the Type of Change checkboxes are absent, the Test Plan checkboxes are not ticked, the Checklist is absent, and the Related Issues section does not link code-scanning #61 or any issue. The Summary is present but is not formatted as the template's bullet list.

Codex reviewed the resulting contact-email length guard and relays Muse's completed read-only PASS for the exact final two-file PR diff. The committed diff SHA256 is 620080082b65124e80c4186fb657149333f642443e8ce47982d24f262ef8f9cf, matching the reviewed snapshot. Current main was integrated without conflicts.
The oversized-email test now verifies deterministically that an over-limit string never reaches regex validation, with 400/invalid_email and no outbound fetch. Its scoped RegExp spy safely refuses the oversized value if the guard regresses, avoiding a slow regex during mutation validation. The 254-character boundary remains accepted.
Codex independently ran the focused suite after integration: 3 passed, plus targeted ESLint, applicable pre-commit hooks, staged gitleaks, and branch-scoped TruffleHog. Temporarily removing only the length guard made the regex-call assertion fail, and the route was restored before committing. Muse did not execute tests.
This addresses discussion_r4375259667. Fresh CI remains required before merge.
Codex rechecked the contact email-length source and test delta at this head. The only new commit integrates main's already-merged proof-page cleanup eb907f41bbdeb38dfe46239d9f58a84746002d09 (#3553). The full feature diff before and after that integration is byte-identical (SHA256 620080082b65124e80c4186fb657149333f642443e8ce47982d24f262ef8f9cf), and all reviewed file hashes are unchanged.
This carries forward Muse's actual read-only PASS for the unchanged feature delta, documented in the earlier review at #3627 (comment). Muse did not perform a new full-tree review or run these checks for the merge commit. Codex verified the integration and its current feature diff.
Integration validation performed by Codex: actual Copy gate passed against the exact main baseline; all 16 Copy gate unit tests passed; 3 contact-email tests passed. Diff checks passed. A new TruffleHog scan restricted to this branch since eb907f41 completed with exit 0 and zero verified/unknown findings. The worktree was clean before the normal fast-forward push.
The recent CI failure came from old proof-page counts (epcis-unlabeled: 2, sample-demo: 5) being compared with main's new zero counts. This merge brings the actual upstream empty-state page and matching reduced baseline together. No copy rule or allowance was weakened. Fresh CI on this head is still required before merge.
