fix(frontend): QA signal timeout copy and ingest/integrations timeouts (SEL-414) - #3622
Timeout: deriveQASignal maps AbortError/TimeoutError to "The QA signal did not respond." in both card and panel; failed state shows Retry + Contact support (/settings/support).
/ingest: job polling had no in-flight guard with a 30s timeout on a 2s interval, so slow polls piled up; added 8s timeout, in-flight guard, immediate first poll, Retry on status error. EPCIS validate-only serial loop → Promise.all.
/dashboard/integrations: profiles load had 30s timeout and no abort/retry; 8s timeout + Retry button.
/api/session BFF: /auth/me fetch had no timeout; now AbortSignal.timeout(5000) per target.
Tests updated/added for shared source, timeout copy, polling, session timeout. No sample data.
Backend findings for Grok (no backend changes)
Suspected trigger of shell hangs on /ingest and /dashboard/integrations is admin GET /auth/me latency (called serially per admin target by the BFF). Worth checking: /auth/me p50/p95 and cold start, unreachable targets in getAdminTargets(), and latency of GET /v1/ingest/status/:jobId, GET /api/v1/integrations/profiles/:tenant, EPCIS validate. Hypothesis from frontend code only; no traces inspected.
.secrets.baseline: line-number shifts only (detect-secrets hook).
Note
Medium Risk
Changes auth/session semantics (503 unknown vs logout) and shared fetch timeout/abort behavior across session BFF, AuthProvider, and polled pages—high impact if misclassified, but scoped to fail-open on indeterminate checks.
Overview
Fixes dashboard shell hangs and mistaken logouts when backend checks are slow or flaky by bounding fetches, tri-state session checks, and clearer timeout UX on several surfaces.
Session BFF and auth hydrate:GET /api/session opaque /auth/me lookup now uses 5s per admin target and an 8s overall cap (combined abort signals). Only 401/403 yield authenticated: false; timeouts, network errors, and other failures return 503 with { authenticated: null, status: 'unknown' } and echo stored cookies. AuthProvider treats that as indeterminate—keeps localStorage profile and treats users with a stored profile as isAuthenticated so layouts do not redirect to login on transient admin outages.
HTTP client: Shared api-client aborts internal timeouts with TimeoutError (distinct from caller AbortError), forwards optional signal, and applies 8s timeouts to ingestion job status and integration profile list loads.
/ingest: Job status polling gets an immediate first poll, in-flight guard, per-job AbortController, terminal-status stop (no regressions from late responses), status Retry, and errors that are no longer swallowed when they are not the page’s own abort.
/dashboard/integrations: Load failures vs save failures are split (Retry vs Retry save).
QA health:deriveQASignal maps abort/timeout errors to "The QA signal did not respond." (card + attention panel); failed/loading timeout UI adds Contact support (/settings/support).
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The session route now distinguishes authenticated, unauthenticated, and unknown outcomes for opaque-session checks. The auth provider preserves stored profile data when session state is unknown. The API client forwards abort signals and applies timeouts to selected requests. Integration profile loading and saving, and ingestion status, now have retry actions. QA timeout errors use a shared message and produce a distinct failed-signal state. Tests and secrets-baseline records were updated.
Resolve the profile-state race and the unverified-session client flags before merging. The ingestion polling race is addressed, but the new tests also need corrections.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a4e3e
Session-check failures can cause cached identities to be treated as signed in, including for privileged interface features. Existing server-side controls limit the demonstrated impact; no backend authorization bypass was established. Bounded requests and cancellation improve failure containment.
Retained concerns
Low · security · observed: An indeterminate initial session check promotes an unverified stored profile into shared authenticated and potentially admin-session flags. This changes the previous credential-dependent contract and enables privileged client consumers without verification. The unknown state has no automatic recovery check within the provider. Demonstrated impact is client admission and request initiation, not a backend authorization bypass.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated expansion affects browser consumers of authenticated, tenant-session and admin-session flags, including review-queue request initiation. It does not establish access to additional tenants, backend assets or administrative authority because those flags are not forwarded as credentials.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A stale or locally modified privileged profile combined with a failed initial session check can activate client admin features. This requires existing same-origin stored state or storage-write capability and session-check failure; no new remote credential-forgery path or successful unauthorized backend operation was demonstrated.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Independent server controls remain outside the client flags: the shared proxy rejects missing caller credentials, opaque cookies are forwarded for backend validation, and review endpoints declare review-read or review-decision dependencies and derive tenant scope from the actor. These controls predate this PR; the proxy itself does not verify opaque-cookie validity.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Polling distinguishes lifecycle cancellation from request timeout: only the owning controller's cancellation is silent, while timeout failures remain visible. Terminal-state guards apply to both successful retry responses and late retry failures, containing asynchronous updates after completion.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Separate cached-shell continuity from verified authentication and capability flags. Expose uncertainty explicitly to privileged consumers and provide bounded revalidation so a transient check failure does not leave cached roles represented indefinitely as verified session state.

Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections loosely. It has a Summary-style Changes list, a test note, and a related-issue link (Linear SEL-414, builds on #3475). It omits the template's Type of Change checkboxes, the Test Plan checkboxes, and the Checklist. The Test Plan content appears only as prose: tsc clean, lint 0 errors, vitest 1518 passed. The description is substantive and mostly complete, so the check passes. The author should still tick the Type of Change, Test Plan, and Checklist items for consistency with the template.

Codex review of d13907a (SEL-414). Local: tsc, lint, vitest all pass.
Blocking:
Slow /auth/me now logs a valid user out. AbortSignal.timeout(5000) (frontend/src/app/api/session/route.ts:287) throws into the catch at :329, the loop falls through to return null, GET then reports isAuthenticated=false (:348-353), and auth-context.tsx:314 clears the local profile. A timeout must return an indeterminate/5xx result distinct from a confirmed 401/403, with a test.
Unbounded EPCIS validate fan-out: Promise.all over every event (app/ingest/page.tsx:313-332) with no cap in parseEpcisJson (lib/epcis-upload.ts:26). Large files will hit API-key rate limits and report rate-limited events as invalid. Bound concurrency (and this change is outside the stated SEL-414 scope).
handleRetryStatus (ingest/page.tsx:225-241) has no cancellation/job-identity check after await, so a stale response can overwrite a newer job's status/error.
Poll cleanup (ingest/page.tsx:219-222) clears the interval but cannot abort the in-flight request; the shared pollInFlightRef then makes a new job skip its immediate poll for up to 8s. Pass an abort signal into getIngestionJob (lib/api-client.ts:578) and abort on cleanup, or scope the guard per effect.
Non-blocking: QA timeout copy is accurate and leaks nothing; /settings/support route exists. No new polling-overlap test for /ingest. Tests add no invented IDs.
Addresses Codex review on #3622: tri-state /auth/me result (timeout is unknown, only 401/403 unauthenticated) with an overall lookup deadline; auth-context keeps profile on unknown; revert out-of-scope parallel EPCIS validation; AbortSignal through getIngestionJob with per-effect poll guard and stale-job checks in retry; separate integrations load/save errors; Link for support action.

Keep a successful save visible when a load retry finishes.
If an operator clicks Retry and saves a profile before that list request finishes, the list response can contain the pre-save profiles. setProfiles(response.profiles ?? []) then replaces the profile added by handleCreateProfile. The saved profile disappears from this page until another load. Reconcile the load result with profiles created during the request, or reload after the save.

Treat a rejected session request as an unknown session.
When fetch('/api/session') rejects before the route returns its 503 response, the catch returns null. Hydration then leaves sessionUnknown false. A cached profile without an access-token placeholder can therefore redirect from the dashboard.
The route's normal 8-second /auth/me deadline returns the handled 503 response before the client's 10-second timeout. This issue affects browser-level rejection before that response, including transport failure or a delayed response. The request-failure normalization is separate from verified-versus-cached authentication.

Preserve the distinction between an empty profile list and a failed profile load.
When listIntegrationProfiles() exceeds its new 8-second timeout, the catch handler clears integrationProfiles. The invite form then removes all saved-mapping options and shows the prompt to create a profile. The page remains usable with “No saved profile,” and the existing page refresh can recover the list, so this is a minor but misleading, recoverable workflow failure.
Track the load error separately and show a profile-specific Retry action. Render the empty-state prompt only after a successful empty response.

Handle request failures as indeterminate session checks.
If /api/session times out in the browser or fails before returning a response, getSessionInfo() returns null. The null branch does not set sessionUnknown. With a stored user and no access token, isAuthenticated remains false, so consumers can treat a transient failure as a logout. Handle the null result as unknown without making it authenticated. This is the remaining request-failure form of the previously reported unknown-session redirect.

Prevent an in-flight poll from replacing a terminal retry result.
A late poll can set jobStatus back to queued after Retry receives a terminal status and stops polling. The stale state can persist because statusError is cleared and the status Retry button is not shown. This is a localized display error. The ingest form remains available, so the major classification is not justified. Cancel or invalidate the active poll when Retry accepts a terminal status, or serialize poll and retry responses.

Delta review from FAIL at 476a80b (main merge 97aa261 checked with remerge-diff: no conflict resolutions; plus 88c8a38).
Fixed:
Terminal stop now aborts the in-flight poll, and the late-result guards look correct.
On a session throw, setSessionUnknownState(true) keeps a stored profile authenticated with no client redirect loop.
New tests use generated ids, with no invented dates or metrics.
Blocking:
frontend/src/app/ingest/page.tsx:317, the handleRetryStatus catch: the success path checks isTerminalIngestStatus(jobStatusRef.current), but the catch does not. If the interval poll reaches a terminal status while a retry is in flight and the retry then fails, setStatusError still fires. A completed job then shows an error, or a failed job shows a stale fetch error and a Retry button. Add the same terminal guard in the catch, and add a test for this ordering (the new test only covers the opposite ordering).
…EL-414)
Add the terminal-status guard to handleRetryStatus's catch path so a retry that rejects after the poll observed a terminal status does not set a status error. Adds a regression test for that ordering.

The test may check the wrong interval ID.
findByRole calls waitFor. waitFor registers its own setInterval (50 ms) through the same global. It does this after the page effect registered the 2 s poll interval. The last entry in setIntervalSpy.mock.results can then be the waitFor interval, not the poll interval.
waitFor clears its own interval when it finishes. The later expect(clearIntervalSpy).toHaveBeenCalledWith(pollIntervalId) can then pass without stopStatusPolling running. The test would not detect a regression in the terminal-Retry stop path.
Select the interval by its 2000 ms delay instead of by position.

frontend/src/app/ingest/page.tsx: handleRetryStatus's catch path now returns on isTerminalIngestStatus(jobStatusRef.current) before setStatusError. This fixes the late-retry-rejection bug from the previous FAIL.
New ingest-job-overlap test covers the order: poll fails, retry held, poll completes, then retry rejects. The job id comes from crypto.randomUUID() at runtime, and the test asserts no .workspace-load-error. I confirmed it fails with the guard removed and passes with it.
Local: ingest-job-overlap vitest 6/6 passing; eslint has 0 errors and 1 pre-existing warning (page.tsx:208, unchanged line).
The delta adds no invented data. The existing DEMO-DOC-ID fallback at page.tsx:1034 predates this delta and should be handled separately.
Checked out the exact head on a clean SSD worktree. ingest-job-overlap and ingest-csv tests: 18/18 pass. tsc --noEmit: no errors. The holder-object change keeps the real assertions: old-job abort plus immediate new-job poll, timeout or abort errors surfaced, interval cleared when Retry gets a terminal status, and no regression from late results. No merge done by me; PR Gate: Frontend was failing on the last CI run and must be green before merge.

Session BFF and auth hydrate:
GET /api/sessionopaque/auth/melookup now uses 5s per admin target and an 8s overall cap (combined abort signals). Only 401/403 yieldauthenticated: false; timeouts, network errors, and other failures return 503 with{ authenticated: null, status: 'unknown' }and echo stored cookies.AuthProvidertreats that as indeterminate—keeps localStorage profile and treats users with a stored profile asisAuthenticatedso layouts do not redirect to login on transient admin outages.HTTP client: Shared
api-clientaborts internal timeouts withTimeoutError(distinct from callerAbortError), forwards optionalsignal, and applies 8s timeouts to ingestion job status and integration profile list loads./ingest: Job status polling gets an immediate first poll, in-flight guard, per-job
AbortController, terminal-status stop (no regressions from late responses), status Retry, and errors that are no longer swallowed when they are not the page’s own abort./dashboard/integrations: Load failures vs save failures are split (Retry vs Retry save).
QA health:
deriveQASignalmaps abort/timeout errors to "The QA signal did not respond." (card + attention panel); failed/loading timeout UI adds Contact support (/settings/support).Tests cover tri-state session, unknown hydrate, api-client timeout reasons, ingest polling overlap/terminal races, integrations errors, and QA copy.
