feat(ingestion): separate EDI ingest time, event-time mismatch check, R1 clock guard - #3612
Follow-up to #3604 (spec: regengine-ds). Stacked on #3604's branch because #3604 has not merged yet; I'll retarget to main and merge main in once it does.
Changes:
Ingest time is NOT added to event KDEs: it lives in the existing fsma.cte_events.ingested_at column, so compute_idempotency_key stays deterministic per document (an earlier edi_ingested_at KDE was dropped after Codex review). Guarded by a same-document-same-key test on the synthetic asn_856.edi fixture.
scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py: read-only COUNT(DISTINCT e.id) of events whose event_timestamp is more than one day outside their ship_date/event_date KDE. Runs in SET TRANSACTION READ ONLY and rolls back, refuses production (URL or REGENGINE_ENV/ENVIRONMENT/ENV), never prints the URL. Not run against any database here.
R1 time to fix (feat(suppliers): track data gap time to fix per supplier #3572): it already measures opened_at/closed_at on DB now() (ingest-time clocks), never event time, so backfilled events don't skew it. Documented in data_gap_tracking.py and guarded by a test that its SQL never reads event_timestamp/event_date.
Tests: services/ingestion/tests/test_edi_ingest_time_field.py (dates relative to now; synthetic asn_856 fixture only).
No files from #3603 or #3605. No uv.lock/ci.yml changes.
Note
Low Risk
Mostly new diagnostics and tests; production DB access is fail-closed, and ingest/idempotency behavior is asserted rather than changed in this diff.
Overview
Adds a read-only diagnostic (scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py) that counts EDI-sourced CTE events where event_timestamp is more than one day off from ship_date / event_date KDEs. The script runs under SET TRANSACTION READ ONLY, uses JSONB-safe date parsing (no throwing to_date), supports tenant RLS via --tenant-id or --all-tenants, and refuses production via env checks and a localhost-oriented host allow-list.
Tests lock in the two-clock model: ingest time stays out of hashed KDEs (stable idempotency on resend), mismatch math, script safety/SQL shape, and that R1 “time to fix” in data_gap_tracking never references event time (doc-only clarification there). A migration integration test runs the mismatch SQL against real JSONB kde_value in disposable Postgres.

Backfilled EDI older than 90 days had its timestamp snapped to now()
while event_date kept the real date, corrupting EPCIS eventTime and R1
time to fix. Keep the parsed source date; reject missing or >24h-future
dates with explicit HTTP 400 (future flagged needs_review).

…mismatch check
Adds the edi_ingested_at KDE alongside the real EDI event time, a read-only
non-production script that counts events whose timestamp and event date
disagree by more than one day, and documents/tests that R1 time to fix
(#3572) reads ingest-time clocks only.

Walkthrough
Adds a read-only CLI check that counts distinct EDI events whose timestamps fall more than one day outside date KDE calendar-day bounds. The CLI validates tenant scope and database hosts, and refuses production settings. Tests cover ingestion timestamps, mismatch boundaries and counts, query safeguards, and JSONB values. Module documentation describes gap timing in terms of database clocks rather than event timestamps or dates.
This PR adds a read-only EDI event-time mismatch diagnostic and does not change production write paths. Malformed date values can still go unreported, so a clean-looking result is not fully trustworthy. One migration test also checks the mismatch count too loosely. Both are low-risk follow-ups to fix before or soon after merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 48f40
The diagnostic uses existing database credentials, runs read-only queries, and does not change production ingestion or database permissions. Single-tenant scope depends on existing row-level security; a privileged connection can still count across tenants. No new attacker-accessible path was established, but deployed role configuration and external invocation were not validated.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The maximum diagnostic scope is all EDI events and relevant date KDEs visible to the supplied database role, including all tenants for an RLS-bypassing role. The implemented output is aggregate counts, not event records, and the script does not grant credentials or privileges.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The CLI rejects configured production environment values and checks URL authority plus host and hostaddr query values against local or explicitly permitted hosts. These are operator safeguards, not independent proof that a database is nonproduction. Database authorization remains the effective data-access boundary.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The tenant setting is transaction-local and is cleared by rollback. Query errors do not trigger retries, repairs, or partial application-state writes, limiting recovery-state complexity.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider explicit bound tenant predicates in single-tenant mode so that choosing --tenant-id also constrains diagnostic scope when an operator supplies an RLS-bypassing connection. This is defense in depth, not evidence of newly granted cross-tenant authority.

Codex review of 22b719e (stacked on #3604, base kimi/edi-preserve-event-time). It also carries #3604's two FAIL items. I ran 127 EDI/EPCIS export tests and all passed. The script's read-only and refuse-production guards look fine, and its SQL joins on tenant_id.
services/ingestion/app/edi_ingestion/routes.py:612 and :811: edi_ingested_at goes inside kdes, and both compute_idempotency_key paths hash the full kdes map (shared/cte_persistence/hashing.py:172-182, shared/canonical_event.py:512-520). Every retransmission therefore gets a new key. When Redis ISA13 dedup fails open, the CTE-hash fallback stops catching duplicates (Bugbot thread, agreed). Keep the ingest time out of the hashed KDEs: use the existing cte_events.ingested_at / TraceabilityEvent.ingested_at, or exclude it from hashing. Add a test that the same document gives the same idempotency key twice.
scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py:30-38: COUNT(*) over the join counts KDE rows, not events. A 945 that has both ship_date and event_date is counted twice. Use COUNT(DISTINCT e.id), and fix the docstring to match (Bugbot thread, agreed).
services/ingestion/tests/test_edi_ingest_time_field.py:46-66: the test uses hardcoded invented dates (2026-03-01, 2026-04-08, 2026-10-25 ...). C.Lee's real-data rule doesn't allow invented values, so build them relative to now, as #3604's tests already do.
Not blocking: it can't merge until #3604 merges and it's retargeted to main. PR Blocker Checklist fails and Head SHA Check Guard is pending. Two threads are unresolved.
…ections for review
Date rejections (missing_edi_date, invalid_edi_date, edi_date_in_future)
now run before check_and_record_interchange, so a corrected resend is not
refused as a 409 replay. Each rejection is written to the EDI rejection
log with needs_review=True and returns its rejection_id.

…ct events
- Drop the edi_ingested_at KDE. It was a fresh timestamp inside the fields
compute_idempotency_key hashes, so a resend got a new key and backup
dedupe broke when Redis was down. Ingest time is the existing
fsma.cte_events.ingested_at column.
- check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py: COUNT(DISTINCT e.id) so an event with
both ship_date and event_date KDEs counts once.
- Tests: same-document-same-key test on the synthetic asn_856 fixture;
mismatch dates built relative to now.

@codex please re-review #3612 at new head 0e933a2 (re: review 5648517733). It now includes #3604's fixes (merged from the updated kimi/edi-preserve-event-time, which itself has main merged in).
Fixes:
Ingest time is out of the hashed fields. I dropped the edi_ingested_at KDE and _ingest_time_iso. Ingest time is the existing fsma.cte_events.ingested_at column (DB now()), so compute_idempotency_key inputs are deterministic per document. New test_same_document_same_idempotency_key builds the event twice from the synthetic asn_856.edi fixture and asserts the same KDEs and the same key.
scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py now uses COUNT(DISTINCT e.id). The test asserts it. The script was not run against any database.
tests/test_edi_ingest_time_field.py: every mismatch date is now built relative to now (a day 200 days back, with offsets from its start). No hardcoded dates remain.
Local: 147 tests passed (EDI + R3 + shared hashing). The full services/ingestion/tests suite passed.

Delta re-review vs prior FAIL 22b719e (remerge-diff) at 0e933a2.
Fixed: edi_ingested_at is gone from hashed KDEs. Ingest time uses the existing ingested_at column, which is outside the hash, and the same-document same-key test passes (tests/test_edi_ingest_time_field.py:72-79). scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py:30 uses COUNT(DISTINCT e.id). Test dates are relative to now (test_edi_ingest_time_field.py:83-115). The data_gap_tracking.py change is docs only. No migrations. Locally, 43 touched tests passed. The mismatch SQL was not run against a database.
Blocking (inherited from #3604, which this PR is stacked on): _preflight_event_date runs before the envelope and allowlist check (routes.py:605, :1157 vs verify_trading_partner_allowed at :390). A disallowed sender with a bad date gets a 400 plus a needs_review rejection record instead of a 403, and it can evict real records from the capped rejection store (rejection_log.py:87-90). Same fix as #3604: allowlist first, then the date check, then reserve ISA13. #3604's test_edi_date_reject_resend.py:99 non-409 assertion also comes in here.
Non-blocking: the branch is 2 commits behind main, and CI is still pending (PR Blocker Checklist and Head SHA Check Guard are failing). 0 unresolved threads.
_enforce_envelope_integrity takes a before_reserve hook that runs after
the envelope and trading-partner checks and before the ISA13 is recorded.
The event-date preflight moved there, so a disallowed sender gets 403
with no rejection record. Tests now prove a corrected resend is accepted
(201) on both routes and that a disallowed sender with a bad date is 403.

@codex please re-review at d4ade26. I merged the updated #3604 head (8750a97) and origin/main (0 behind). It now has #3604's fixes: a real 201 on the corrected resend for both routes, a 409 on replay, and the order envelope → allowlist → date check → ISA13 reserve, plus the 403-with-no-rejection test.
Tests: EDI + R3 e2e + shared hashing: 149 passed; full ingestion suite: 5852 passed, 57 skipped, 6 xfailed. The first full run had 1 transient error that didn't happen on the rerun.

Delta review 0e933a2..d4ade26. The #3604 fixes are carried in (8750a97 is an ancestor) and tests/test_edi_*.py pass locally (129).
Blocking:
scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py:38-40 applies the text regex ~ and CAST(k.kde_value AS date) to fsma.cte_kdes.kde_value, which is JSONB on migrated databases (alembic/versions/20260505_5ac9e7b1d402_v078_orphan_migration_forward_ports.py:1151-1207 converts and renames it; services/shared/cte_persistence/writes.py:319 says the same). Postgres has no jsonb ~ text operator, so the script errors before counting anything. Extract the scalar first, e.g. (k.kde_value #>> '{}') as compliance_score.py:201 does, and add a test that runs the SQL against a JSONB column (or at least asserts the extraction). Matches the open Cursor and Codex-connector threads at :38.
fsma.cte_kdes.kde_value is JSONB since v078. Extract the scalar with
#>> '{}' before the date regex and cast, as compliance_score.py does.
Add a test that runs MISMATCH_SQL against a real JSONB column in a
disposable Postgres (rls_postgres_or_skip), rolled back.
Signed-off-by: Christopher Sellers <1@christophersellers.com>
Fix: scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py now extracts the JSONB scalar with (k.kde_value #>> '{}') before the date regex and the date cast, as compliance_score.py does. New tests/migrations/test_edi_event_time_mismatch_jsonb.py runs MISMATCH_SQL against a real JSONB kde_value column in a disposable Postgres, rolled back.
Local: the EDI ingest-time tests pass (19). The new JSONB test skipped locally because no Postgres container was available here, so CI is where it runs.

The JSONB fix is correct. MISMATCH_SQL extracts the scalar with #>> '{}' before the regex and the date cast, which matches compliance_score.py.
Blocking:
scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py:85 calls create_engine(args.database_url) on a bare postgresql:// URL, which is the .env.example format. SQLAlchemy then picks psycopg2, but requirements.lock installs only psycopg 3 (3.3.6), so the script fails with ModuleNotFoundError. This confirms Codex's open P2. Fix: rewrite postgresql:// or postgres:// to postgresql+psycopg:// before creating the engine, and add a unit test.
The production guard is deny-list only: substring "prod" in the URL, or the env vars. A production host without that word in its URL passes when the env vars are unset. Make it an affirmative allow-list (localhost, 127.0.0.1, or an explicit --allow-host), as CodeRabbit suggests.
There are 6 unresolved review threads (PR Blocker Checklist: 7 open blockers). Each needs a fix or a reasoned reply before merging.
CI: Head SHA Check Guard and PR Blocker Checklist are red. The checklist is red because of the open threads. visual-report (non-required) fails as it does on every PR.
Address Gemini's FAIL on #3612 and the six open review threads:
- Rewrite bare postgresql:// URLs to postgresql+psycopg:// via
shared.db_url.sync_postgres_url (psycopg2 is not installed).
- Replace the production deny-list with a fail-closed host allow-list
(localhost/loopback/compose) plus --allow-host for scratch DBs.
- Filter MISMATCH_SQL to e.source LIKE 'edi%' and skip calendar-invalid
date KDEs via to_date round-trip; report invalids on stderr.
- Require --tenant-id or --all-tenants so the all-tenant scan cannot run
under the ordinary RLS-enforcing DATABASE_URL role by accident.
- Document closed_at = GREATEST(now(), opened_at) in data_gap_tracking.

All prior blockers from b3c9cc80 are resolved in 2c94f47c, no new bugs or bypasses were introduced, and test coverage is comprehensive.
1. Blocker (1): Bare postgresql:// and Driver Normalization — FIXED
Fix (scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py:53, 200): Imports and wraps args.database_url with sync_postgres_url() before passing to create_engine().
URL Normalization Edge Cases:
Rewrites bare postgresql:// and postgres:// to postgresql+psycopg:// (pins psycopg 3).
URLs already specifying a driver (e.g. postgresql+psycopg://) are retained without duplicate driver strings.
_effective_db_hosts() (scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py:109-125) uses urlsplit(), which parses authority and hostname identically across postgres://, postgresql://, and +driver schemes.
Verification (services/ingestion/tests/test_edi_ingest_time_field.py:171-218):test_sync_postgres_url_pins_psycopg3 verifies both postgresql:// and postgres://; test_main_passes_psycopg_url_to_create_engine verifies psycopg 3 reaches create_engine().
2. Blocker (2): Production Guard & Allow-List — FIXED
Fix (scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py:47-51, 128-153): Replaced the substring deny-list with a fail-closed allow-list (LOCAL_HOSTS = {"localhost", "127.0.0.1", "::1", "postgres", "host.docker.internal"}). Remote scratch databases require explicit --allow-host HOST.
_effective_db_hosts() inspects the authority hostname plus libpq connection query parameters (host and hostaddr, including comma-delimited fallback lists).
Strips and lowercases all host tokens; rejects empty or unparseable hosts (line 148).
Production environment variables (REGENGINE_ENV, ENVIRONMENT, ENV set to prod/production) unconditionally refuse execution even if localhost or --allow-host is supplied (lines 141-144).
Verification (services/ingestion/tests/test_edi_ingest_time_field.py:128-144, 163-169): Parameterized tests confirm loopback/compose host acceptance, remote host rejection without --allow-host, acceptance with --allow-host, and production environment rejection.
3. Blocker (3): Unresolved Threads — FIXED
EDI Source Filter (scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py:83, 118): Both MISMATCH_SQL and INVALID_DATE_SQL filter on e.source LIKE 'edi%'. Verified in tests/migrations/test_edi_event_time_mismatch_jsonb.py:86 (webhook sources are ignored).
Direct ::date casting is replaced with _VALID_ISO_DATE (^\d{4}-\d{2}-\d{2}$ regex + round-trip check to_char(to_date(val, 'YYYY-MM-DD'), 'YYYY-MM-DD') = val), preventing PostgreSQL queries from aborting on values like 2026-02-30.
INVALID_DATE_SQL tallies invalid date KDEs and reports them on stderr without altering stdout count (lines 222-224).
Requires exactly one of --tenant-id UUID or --all-tenants (lines 178-183).
Scoping is enforced by setting transaction-local RLS context SELECT set_config('app.tenant_id', :tid, true) (lines 202-205) and joining k.tenant_id = e.tenant_id in SQL (lines 78, 116).
Unprivileged attempts to run --all-tenants are caught on RLS failure, outputting remediation instructions and returning exit code 4 (lines 211-221).
closed_at Documentation (services/shared/data_gap_tracking.py:17-21): Module docstring specifies that gap recovery is measured strictly using ingest-time clocks (opened_at = now(), closed_at = now()), never reading event timestamps. Verified by test_r1_time_to_fix_reads_ingest_clocks_not_event_time in test_edi_ingest_time_field.py:228-237.
4. Test Coverage — COMPLETE
Unit tests cover CLI flags, host allow-listing, environment guards, and URL driver rewriting (services/ingestion/tests/test_edi_ingest_time_field.py).
Integration tests run MISMATCH_SQL and INVALID_DATE_SQL against real PostgreSQL tables with JSONB columns, verifying multiple KDE keys, non-EDI source exclusion, and invalid calendar date handling (tests/migrations/test_edi_event_time_mismatch_jsonb.py).
Run the JSONB integration test in a scratch database.
When fsma.cte_kdes already exists, the test skips before executing MISMATCH_SQL, INVALID_DATE_SQL, or their assertions. Use scratch_database_engine with a unique database name so the test always creates isolated tables and exercises both changed queries.

--tenant-id sets app.tenant_id, but both queries rely on RLS for tenant scope. A BYPASSRLS role ignores that scope, so tenant mode can count other tenants. Apply e.tenant_id = :tenant_id in tenant mode and omit it only for --all-tenants.

Minor · Check PGHOSTADDR in the host allow-list, but only… · check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py:91-108
Check PGHOSTADDR in the host allow-list, but only when the URL omits hostaddr.
libpq connects to the PGHOSTADDR address when the connection URL has no hostaddr, even if the URL sets host=localhost. The guard checks only the URL host values, so an operator environment that sets PGHOSTADDR to a non-local address lets the script connect and run its query on an address outside the allow-list. The URL hostaddr overrides PGHOSTADDR. An unconditional check of PGHOSTADDR would therefore also refuse a local URL that sets hostaddr=127.0.0.1 while PGHOSTADDR names a remote address.
The script is a read-only diagnostic that rolls back its transaction. The impact is limited to the operator run. When the trigger is present, the tenant ID, the mismatch query, and the authentication exchange go to the unapproved address. Whether the password itself is sent depends on the authentication method and TLS settings.

Report malformed date KDEs outside the ISO shape.
When an EDI date KDE contains not-a-date, INVALID_DATE_SQL excludes it at the ISO-shape filter. MISMATCH_SQL also excludes it. The CLI can therefore print a zero mismatch count without an invalid-date warning. Count malformed date KDEs separately without casting them, so the read-only check does not present this record as clean. The regression fixture explicitly supplies this value. Restore an exact mismatch count.
The three valid ship_date rows contain two mismatches. This assertion also accepts one or three, so it can pass when the helper misses the leap-day mismatch or counts the matching row. The previous assertion required an exact count. (github.com)

1. SQL Evaluation Order & Missing CASE Guard (scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py)
No AND short-circuiting in PostgreSQL: PostgreSQL does not guarantee left-to-right evaluation of AND subexpressions in WHERE clauses or within CASE WHEN conditions (PostgreSQL docs §4.2.14). The query optimizer orders boolean clauses by cost (order_qual_clauses). Because regex matching (~) has a significantly higher cost than integer operations, PostgreSQL can and does evaluate SUBSTRING(...)::int BETWEEN 1 AND 12 before evaluating (k.kde_value #>> '{}') ~ '^\d{4}-\d{2}-\d{2}$'.
Runtime exception on non-date strings: For rows where k.kde_value is not an ISO date (e.g., 'not-a-date', "", or 'nested', which are seeded in cte_kdes), evaluating SUBSTRING('not-a-date' FROM 6 FOR 2)::int executes '-d'::int, throwing ERROR: invalid input syntax for type integer: "-d" and terminating the query.
Required fix: Integer conversions must be guarded inside nested CASE expressions rather than joined with AND. The regex check must be the WHEN guard, and only within the guarded THEN branch may the substring integer casts be evaluated:
CASE
WHEN (k.kde_value#>> '{}') ~ '^\d{4}-\d{2}-\d{2}$'
THEN (
CASE
WHEN SUBSTRING((k.kde_value#>> '{}') FROM 1 FOR 4)::int >= 1ANDSUBSTRING((k.kde_value#>> '{}') FROM 6 FOR 2)::int BETWEEN 1 AND 12ANDSUBSTRING((k.kde_value#>> '{}') FROM 9 FOR 2)::int BETWEEN 1 AND (CASE ... END)
THEN true
ELSE false
END
)
ELSE false
END
2. Year 0000 Out-Of-Range Cast Error (scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py)
_CALENDAR_VALID_ISO_DATE accepts year 0000 because 0 % 400 = 0, treating it as a valid leap year.
A string like '0000-01-01' satisfies the regex and month/day ranges, causing _SAFE_DATE to cast it via ::date.
In PostgreSQL, year 0000 does not exist in standard date notation: '0000-01-01'::date throws ERROR: date/time field value out of range: "0000-01-01". The year must be validated as >= 1 before casting.
In INVALID_DATE_SQL, NOT (_CALENDAR_VALID_ISO_DATE) is injected directly into the WHERE clause:
WHEREe.sourceLIKE'edi%'ANDk.kde_keyIN ('ship_date', 'event_date')
AND (k.kde_value#>> '{}') ~ '^\d{4}-\d{2}-\d{2}$'AND NOT (_CALENDAR_VALID_ISO_DATE)
Because the top-level conditions are joined with AND, PostgreSQL can reorder evaluation such that SUBSTRING(...)::int inside NOT (...) runs on rows where the outer regex has not yet evaluated.
4. Test Schema Cleanup & Fragile Test Query (tests/migrations/test_edi_event_time_mismatch_jsonb.py)
Missing explicit schema cleanup: Creating f"edi_mismatch_{uuid.uuid4().hex[:12]}" relies entirely on trans.rollback() inside finally:. If the connection is broken or the transaction state is disrupted, the throwaway schema remains orphaned. A defensive DROP SCHEMA IF EXISTS {schema} CASCADE is needed.
Flawed test assertion query: At lines 122–136, the verification query injects {check._CALENDAR_VALID_ISO_DATE} directly into WHERE across the table containing "not-a-date". This test will flake or fail whenever the optimizer evaluates the substring integer check ahead of the regex.
Structure asserts (CASE WHEN, >= 1, no to_date) in services/ingestion/tests/test_edi_ingest_time_field.py — run under Ingestion full suite (xdist signal) → pass (5m47s).
Live shape parametrize (not-a-date, 0000-01-01, 2026-02-30, leap day) in tests/migrations/test_edi_event_time_mismatch_jsonb.py — not listed in any blocking backend-ci pytest invocation (only collect-only / qa-health). Behavioral coverage confirmed locally instead; recommend wiring that file into Live DB suite as follow-up (non-blocking for this delta).
Live DB suite (migrated scratch) → pass. No alembic migration in this delta.
Verdict
PASS — CASE-guarded casts, year ≥ 1, edges behave; ingestion CI green for structural guards; local PG confirms no-throw + rejection.
Replace the inline set_config('app.tenant_id') that Semgrep flags as
semgrep.adhoc-tenant-guc-set-config with the canonical helper. --tenant-id
is already documented as a UUID, so set_tenant_guc is the right call.

Overview
Adds a read-only diagnostic (
scripts/check_edi_event_time_mismatch.py) that counts EDI-sourced CTE events whereevent_timestampis more than one day off fromship_date/event_dateKDEs. The script runs underSET TRANSACTION READ ONLY, uses JSONB-safe date parsing (no throwingto_date), supports tenant RLS via--tenant-idor--all-tenants, and refuses production via env checks and a localhost-oriented host allow-list.Tests lock in the two-clock model: ingest time stays out of hashed KDEs (stable idempotency on resend), mismatch math, script safety/SQL shape, and that R1 “time to fix” in
data_gap_trackingnever references event time (doc-only clarification there). A migration integration test runs the mismatch SQL against real JSONBkde_valuein disposable Postgres.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 2d901cf. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
