fix(ingestion): keep real EDI event time instead of ingest time - #3604
_ship_timestamp_and_date in services/ingestion/app/edi_ingestion/utils.py snapped the event timestamp to now() when the EDI date was >90 days old or >24h ahead, while event_date kept the real date. That corrupted EPCIS eventTime and R1 time to fix (#3572) for backfilled EDI.
Changes:
Historical dates keep the real parsed source date/time (IngestEvent already accepts historical events for the FSMA 204 backfill).
24h-future dates raise HTTP 400 edi_date_in_future with needs_review: true instead of being replaced.
Missing/blank dates raise HTTP 400 missing_edi_date instead of defaulting to now().
Tests: new data-free tests/test_edi_preserve_event_time.py (dates constructed relative to now, no fixtures). Local: EDI/EPCIS/ship-related ingestion tests all pass.
Not in scope (noted only): P2 7 (fsma_spreadsheet UTC offset, covered by #3601) and item 1 (epcis_export -08:00). No overlap with #3593/#3601 or Pi's open PRs. Spec items still open: the timestamp/event_date disagreement data check and the separate ingest-time field.
Note
Medium Risk
Changes core EDI timestamp semantics and HTTP behavior for missing/invalid dates, which affects FSMA/EPCIS traceability; ordering of validation vs dedup is a deliberate fix for partner resend flows.
Overview
EDI ingest now always uses the parsed source date/time for event timestamps instead of substituting ingest time. Historical backfill (>90 days) keeps the real event time; missing/blank dates return HTTP 400 missing_edi_date; dates >24h in the future return 400 edi_date_in_future with needs_review instead of being rewritten to now().
Ordering fix:_preflight_event_date runs via _enforce_envelope_integrity's new before_reserve hook (after allowlist, before ISA13 dedup) so date rejections do not reserve the interchange control number—corrected resends are not blocked as 409 replays. Date failures are logged to the rejection audit with configurable reason and needs_review=True, plus rejection_id on the error response.
New/updated tests cover event-time preservation, reject-then-resend, and wire-format cases that need valid BSN dates.

Backfilled EDI older than 90 days had its timestamp snapped to now()
while event_date kept the real date, corrupting EPCIS eventTime and R1
time to fix. Keep the parsed source date; reject missing or >24h-future
dates with explicit HTTP 400 (future flagged needs_review).
Signed-off-by: Christopher Sellers <1@christophersellers.com>
The EDI date parser now returns HTTP 400 for missing dates and dates more than 24 hours in the future. Future-date errors include a review flag. Historical dates retain their parsed event timestamps. Both ingestion routes preflight dates after envelope and trading-partner checks and before reserving ISA13. Date rejections are logged with a reason and review flag. Tests cover parser behavior, rejection and resend behavior, and wire-format cases.
Missing and future EDI dates are now rejected before the interchange ID is reserved, so corrected resends work. Date-rejection evidence is still incomplete: for multi-set documents only the failing set is recorded, and for warehouse documents the record carries an unrelated TLC. Rejection records also live only in memory. Resolve or explicitly accept these gaps before merging; the resend test also needs tightening.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8750a
The change improves historical event-time integrity and allows corrected date-rejected documents to be resent without consuming their interchange identifiers. Existing permission, tenant, and sender checks remain ahead of rejection recording. No introduced security defect was established, although production recovery and rejection-history durability remain incompletely verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated affected scope is authenticated EDI ingestion, tenant-keyed rejection records, and the event-time values passed toward canonical traceability persistence. The inspected change does not demonstrate an increase in tenant authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Both endpoints retain edi.ingest permission checks and authenticated-principal tenant resolution. Attacker-supplied EDI content reaches the new rejection writer only after envelope identity and configured sender-allowlist checks. The allowlist's permissive behavior when unconfigured predates this PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The existing reservation lifecycle uses atomic Redis SET NX with a seven-day TTL, without immediate release on later failure. Later validation, persistence failure, or interruption can therefore block a retry until expiry, and downstream per-event savepoints permit partial persistence. These limitations predate this PR; moving date rejection before reservation removes one cause rather than introducing them.

Codex review of 6bc308a. The core fix is right: a backfilled date keeps its real time, and the new tests use relative dates with no records. I ran 110 EDI/EPCIS export tests and all passed. It fails because the new 400s are lost and block resubmits.
services/ingestion/app/edi_ingestion/utils.py:139-150 and :189-200, called from routes.py:585, :789 and :1101: missing_edi_date and edi_date_in_future are raised only after _enforce_envelope_integrity has run check_and_record_interchange (dedup.py:60, SET NX on ISA13, never released). Before this PR, missing and future dates were ingested. Now they return 400, and a corrected resend with the same ISA13 gets 409 duplicate until the key expires. Either check the date before reserving the interchange, or release the reservation on this rejection. Add a test that does reject, then resend, and gets accepted.
The same lines: needs_review: true and the docstring say "flagged for review", but nothing persists the rejection. _record_edi_rejection isn't called on these paths, so the event just disappears from the record (CodeRabbit thread at utils.py:141, still unresolved, agreed). Record the rejection with its reason before returning 400, and test that.
Not blocking: the branch is 9 commits behind main. Head SHA Check Guard and PR Blocker Checklist fail. One thread is unresolved.
…ections for review
Date rejections (missing_edi_date, invalid_edi_date, edi_date_in_future)
now run before check_and_record_interchange, so a corrected resend is not
refused as a 409 replay. Each rejection is written to the EDI rejection
log with needs_review=True and returns its rejection_id.

@codex please re-review #3604 at new head 84ab169 (re: review 5648517563).
Fixes:
Date 400s no longer burn the ISA13. New _preflight_event_date in edi_ingestion/routes.py runs the event-date check before _enforce_envelope_integrity / check_and_record_interchange. It runs on the legacy 856 route and on every transaction set in /document. A corrected resend is no longer a 409. The new tests/test_edi_date_reject_resend.py covers both routes with the synthetic asn_856.edi fixture: a future-dated variant gets 400 and no ISA13 is reserved, the unmodified fixture is not a 409, and a third send is a 409.
Rejections are logged for review. Each date rejection (missing / invalid / >24h future) calls _record_edi_rejection with needs_review=True and the error as reason. record_edi_rejection gained optional reason / needs_review params, with defaults unchanged. The 400 detail now carries needs_review: true and rejection_id.
Merged origin/main in (0 behind).
Side effect: test_856_blank_sn1_quantity_is_rejected now gives its BSN a ship date of yesterday (relative to now). That way the earlier date gate passes and the test still reaches the quantity 422 it targets.
Local: 111 EDI + R3 tests passed. The full services/ingestion/tests suite passed except test_s3_integration_testcontainers (no Docker on this machine).

Delta re-review vs prior FAIL 6bc308a (remerge-diff) at 84ab169.
Fixed: date checks now run before ISA13 reservation (routes.py:605 via _preflight_event_date, document route routes.py:1157), and date rejections are persisted via record_edi_rejection with needs_review=True (routes.py:303-343). No migrations. Locally, test_edi*.py: 109 passed.
Blocking:
services/ingestion/tests/test_edi_date_reject_resend.py:99 only asserts resend.status_code != 409. Locally the corrected resend returns 401 on the legacy route and 422 (fsma_validation_failed, TLC too short) on /document. Both still reserve ISA13, so the test passes without ever showing an accept. Use a valid TLC, stub downstream ingest, and assert 201 with the accepted event.
Ordering: _preflight_event_date (routes.py:605, :1157) runs before _enforce_envelope_integrity and the allowlist check (verify_trading_partner_allowed, routes.py:390). A disallowed GS sender with a bad date gets a 400 plus a needs_review rejection record instead of a 403. The per-tenant rejection store is capped and evicts the oldest records (rejection_log.py:87-90), so unauthorized senders can push out real review evidence. Validate envelope identity and the allowlist first, then the date check, then reserve ISA13.
Non-blocking: the branch is 2 commits behind main, required CI is still pending, and there are 3 unresolved threads.
_enforce_envelope_integrity takes a before_reserve hook that runs after
the envelope and trading-partner checks and before the ISA13 is recorded.
The event-date preflight moved there, so a disallowed sender gets 403
with no rejection record. Tests now prove a corrected resend is accepted
(201) on both routes and that a disallowed sender with a bad date is 403.

@codex please re-review at 8750a97. Fixes for review 5648776631:
A real accepted resend.tests/test_edi_date_reject_resend.py now uses a valid TLC (00012345678901-LOT001), a real IngestionPrincipal override and a stubbed ingest_events. On both /api/v1/edi/inbound and /api/v1/edi/document it checks: bad date → 400 with needs_review; corrected resend with the same ISA13 → 201, ingestion_result.accepted == 1, the event carries that TLC and a 2026-03-10 timestamp; third send → 409, and ingest is not called again.
Check order._enforce_envelope_integrity takes a before_reserve hook. The order is now envelope (422), then allowlist (403), then the event-date preflight (400 + rejection record), then the ISA13 reservation (409). New test test_disallowed_sender_with_bad_date_gets_403_and_no_rejection covers both routes.
Merged origin/main (0 behind).
Tests: date_reject_resend 5 passed; all tests/test_edi_*.py + R3 e2e: 113 passed; full ingestion suite: 5830 passed, 57 skipped, 6 xfailed (I ran the full suite before the last main merge and reran EDI + R3 after it).

Delta review 84ab169..8750a97 (fix f6eb471 + two clean main merges; remerge-diff empty).
Both prior blockers are fixed:
Order: services/ingestion/app/edi_ingestion/routes.py:415 runs before_reserve only after envelope mismatch (422) and allowlist (403), and before check_and_record_interchange (ISA13). Wired on both routes, routes.py:613 (/edi/856) and :1180 (/document, all slice sets incl. 861/944/945).
Test: tests/test_edi_date_reject_resend.py:138 now asserts 201 + accepted==1 + the ingested event (TLC, 2026-03-10 timestamp) with a stubbed ingest_events, then 409 on replay. New :166 asserts a disallowed sender with a future date gets 403, no rejection record, no ISA13 reservation, no ingest, on both routes.
Ran locally: services/ingestion tests/test_edi_*.py all pass (111). An independent codex pass found no bypass.
Non-blocking (open CodeRabbit threads the author should resolve or answer before merge): routes.py:1173 a 944/945 date rejection records the form TLC at top level, not the line lots; routes.py:1169/:341 rejection evidence is process-local and per-set (pre-existing, follow-up). Fixture TLC is copied from test_edi_wire_format_2974_2976_2978 (ingest-test fixture exception).
