🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Check production before skipping Dependabot refs.
If a production deployment uses a dependabot/* ref, this line exits with 0 before the production check. Vercel then ignores the build, contrary to the stated requirement to always build production. Move the production check above this branch check. (vercel.com)

I am trying to work out how to get the "Ignore Build Step" to work accurately when I may have a collection of commits being made to multiple projects, and the latest may not be a change to the project being deployed, but there is a commit that was a change to the project and should be deployed. I need a frame of reference for the latest commit that was built. L144: With that, I could look at what latest commit changed the project in question, compare it to the latest commit built, and if they differ than I build & deploy. My git branches are are structured like this: L145: * `master` L146: * All pull requests are based off of `master`, so they're getting staged here and deployed later. L147: * I have many projects that get staged in master, and many of them have their own deployment mechanisms... but they all use this same branch deployment structure L148: * Changes to the Vercel project will trigger a deployment here, because all pull requests get merged into `master` as squash commits. L149: * These preview deployments are useful because they act as a sort of temporary staging environment that can be used to test all changes that are about to get deployed to other environments L150: * `demo` L151: * This branch should trigger a "demo" deployment, which gets its own domain name & environment variables. L152: * This deployment uses mocked data & api calls, and is used for demoing the product to clients. L153: * I prefix environment variables for this branch with `DEMO_`, and reduce them during the build to favor the ones with the prefix. L154: * `staging` L155: * Mostly like the `master` branch, except this is a permanent staging environment with its own domain name. This uses api calls against our testing database/backend. L156: * `production` L157: * This branch should trigger a "production" deployment. Same basic design as the `demo` branch, but uses production values, domain name, and api L158: When I merge master into `staging`, `demo`, or `production`, I fast-forward only so the branches stay even. The problem I have is when I get multiple pull requests merged into `master`, the latest commit that winds up in `staging` / `production` are sometimes not the commit that changed the project that needs to be deployed. Fetch the previous deployment commit before the main fallback.
When VERCEL_GIT_PREVIOUS_SHA names a commit outside the shallow clone, the script can select main as the base. The diff then includes every frontend change on the branch since it diverged from main. A later backend-only push can rebuild a preview that the previous deployment already covers. The fallback fails toward building, so this produces an extra build rather than a skipped deployment.
Fetch that commit when it is missing locally, then check it again:

Overview
Vercel preview builds are no longer triggered for every non-Dependabot PR.

HEADto a resolved base (VERCEL_GIT_PREVIOUS_SHAwhen available, otherwise merge-base withorigin/main) and skips the build when nothing underfrontend/changed; if the base cannot be determined orgit difffails, it still builds.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 4a7050e.
