Refs SEL-452. Refs SEL-447.

Report-only copy-rules lint for user-facing frontend copy (C.Lee priority, via VS Code Lead). Not a required check; Lead flips it to blocking after #3471 merges (set COPY_LINT_STRICT=1 or pass --strict).

What

  • scripts/copy-lint/check-copy.mjs + copy-rules.json + allowlist.json: the Visual Designer's package as the base, with the Product Designer's rules merged in (stricter wins). Every rule carries a source label: visual-designer, product-designer or both. All rules live in one config section in copy-rules.json.
  • frontend/src/lib/capabilities.ts: one capabilities registry. Live: CSV upload, JSON events API. Preview: EPCIS intake, EPCIS export. Never shown: EDI, SFTP. The lint reads it for the EPCIS-needs-Preview, EDI/SFTP and live-claim rules.
  • .github/workflows/copy-lint.yml: runs on pull_request and push to main (paths: frontend/, scripts/copy-lint/, the workflow). Emits ::warning annotations with file/line, prints per-rule counts, exits 0.
  • scripts/copy-lint/check-copy.test.mjs: data-free node:test tests (6/6 pass locally); they use only minimal generic strings that exercise each pattern.

No existing files changed. No copy migrated to the registry in this PR. Every migration candidate is in a file #3471 touches (148 files) or would grow the PR, so moving copy onto the registry is a follow-up after #3471 merges.

Per-rule diff vs Visual Designer reference (#3471 head c774c4b) and counts on main (615a8dc)

Rule VD c774c4b Ours c774c4b Ours main 615a8dc Explanation versus VD
em-dash 1 1 306 VD behavior unchanged.
en-dash 0 0 23 VD behavior unchanged.
hyphen-dash 12 12 13 VD behavior unchanged; marked both.
dash-placeholder 5 25 50 20 added: 19 ?? '-' or `
edi-sftp 1 1 22 VD behavior unchanged; names now read from the registry; marked both.
epcis-unlabeled 68 68 89 VD behavior unchanged; EPCIS now derives from preview registry entries; marked both.
nan-undefined 0 0 0 VD behavior unchanged.
invented-entity 62 75 71 13 added: 12 test data occurrences and one FreshCo occurrence; marked both.
live-claim 0 0 1 New registry-based claim rule; no reference hits.
pilot-status 0 0 0 New exact Pilot badge/status rule; no reference hits.
sample-demo 0 115 103 New copy-word rule (sample, demo, simulated, synthetic).
sandbox 0 83 83 New copy-word rule.
empty-render 0 16 16 New JSX blank fallback rule for ?? '' and `
Total 149 396 777

All 149 Visual Designer findings are reproduced exactly at c774c4b. Every difference comes from a stricter or new rule:

  • dash-placeholder +20: ?? '-' / || '-' fallbacks (19) and a standalone -- (1), from the Product Designer rule.
  • invented-entity +13: 'test data' (12) and FreshCo (1).
  • sample-demo, sandbox, empty-render, live-claim, pilot-status: new rules.

Main is expected to have many hits until #3471 lands.

Allowlist

One entry, kept from the Visual Designer: frontend/src/lib/api-proxy.ts nan-undefined "bearer undefined". It's an auth header guard and is never rendered. No real copy violations are allowlisted.

Note

Low Risk
Adds new lint tooling and a small capabilities registry only; CI is report-only and does not change runtime product behavior.

Overview
Adds a report-only frontend copy linter and wires it into CI so PRs get annotated warnings without failing the build (strict mode via COPY_LINT_STRICT=1 or --strict is reserved for later).

The scanner lives under scripts/copy-lint/: a dependency-free Node script walks frontend/src/app, components, and lib, extracts user-facing strings from TS/TSX/MD, and applies rules from copy-rules.json (Visual Designer rules plus stricter Product Designer rules—dashes, fake entities, EPCIS labeling, demo/sandbox wording, JSX empty fallbacks, etc.). frontend/src/lib/capabilities.ts is new and drives registry-based checks (EPCIS must say Preview, EDI/SFTP never in copy, non-live features not marked Live/Available). allowlist.json documents justified exceptions (one entry carried from the VD reference).

.github/workflows/copy-lint.yml runs on frontend/copy-lint path changes: node:test for check-copy.test.mjs, then the scanner with --github for ::warning annotations and a summary count. No existing frontend files are modified in this PR.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a Node.js checker that scans configured TypeScript, TSX, Markdown, and MDX files against copy rules and a capability registry. It supports allowlist entries, text or JSON output, GitHub annotations, and strict-mode exit status. Tests cover the checker’s rules and scanning behavior. A GitHub Actions workflow runs the tests and checker for path-filtered pull requests and pushes to main.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b8d57

The new reporting job has limited, read-only repository authority and does not deploy application changes. However, its mutable action references introduce a supply-chain trust weakness and conflict with the existing action-pinning security check.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The new PR/main reporting job executes third-party actions through mutable v4 tags, adding an upstream-controlled code-selection boundary and violating the existing immutable-action-reference control.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is the reporting job's runner, checked-out repository data, and read-only repository authority. The workflow provides no evidenced path to tenant stores, production deployment credentials, or repository write authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained mutable-action finding introduces a conditional supply-chain attack path: an attacker able to change an upstream action tag's target could select code executed in this new job. Ordinary frontend copy input does not confer that upstream authority, and no action compromise is evidenced.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The pre-existing security workflow checks all workflow files for immutable action references. The new reporting workflow runs independently and declares no dependency on that check, so detection is not an execution barrier within the reporting job.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The inspected scan/report path keeps findings in memory and reads repository files without updating application state. Interruption or repetition therefore does not require an application-data rollback; report-only handling also does not suppress parsing errors or test failures.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Pin both actions to reviewed immutable commit SHAs while preserving read-only permissions and the existing all-workflow pinning control.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "SEL-452: RegEngine copy-rules lint (report-only)" matches the main change. The PR adds a report-only copy-rules lint for frontend copy, with a config, checker, allowlist, and workflow. The ticket prefix and the "report-only" qualifier are accurate. The title does not name the capabilities registry or the workflow, but it does not need to cover every detail.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the required intent and scope. It has a Summary-style "What" section with file-level detail, a per-rule count table, an allowlist section, and a test note. It does not follow the repository template. It has no "Type of Change" selection, no "Test Plan" checkboxes, no "Checklist" items, and no "Related Issues" section in the template format. It links SEL-452 and SEL-447 as refs, but it does not use the template's Related Issues heading. The Checklist item about the sys.modules stub does not apply here, since the test file uses node:test. The author does not state whether the Checklist items were checked.

Resolution

Rewrite the description to follow the repository template. Add a Summary section with 1-3 bullets. Mark the Type of Change option that applies, which is likely "CI/CD or infrastructure" and possibly "New feature". Mark the Test Plan items that apply, such as "Unit tests added/updated" and "Manual testing performed" if the local runs count. Complete or mark the Checklist items. Move the Refs to a Related Issues section, for example "Relates to SEL-452, SEL-447".

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 10.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 10 functions across 3 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

VS Code Muse review at b8d5735: PASS

Checked: full diff (6 new files), ran node --test scripts/copy-lint/check-copy.test.mjs (6 pass, 0 fail) and ran the linter over the current frontend at this head (629 files scanned).

Rule logic (check-copy.mjs:115-139, copy-rules.json): covers every C.Lee rule. Em/en dash, spaced hyphen, dash placeholders, EDI/SFTP anywhere, EPCIS without Preview on the same line, non-live capability labelled Live/GA/Available (registry in frontend/src/lib/capabilities.ts: live = CSV upload + JSON events API only), sample/demo/simulated/synthetic, sandbox, and 'test data'. Word-boundary regexes (check-copy.mjs:136) correctly ignore 'demonstrate', 'sampled', sample_id, /demo paths, kebab identifiers, imports, comments, className/href/src/id/key values and test/spec/stories files.

Frontend run: 777 findings in 166 files, exit 0. em-dash 306, sandbox 83, sample-demo 103, epcis-unlabeled 89, invented-entity 71, dash-placeholder 50, en-dash 23, edi-sftp 22, empty-render 16, hyphen-dash 13, live-claim 1. Spot checks of sample-demo, sandbox, edi-sftp, epcis-unlabeled, invented-entity, dash-placeholder and live-claim were real violations (for example integrations/page.tsx:34 'EPCIS, and SFTP', compare/*/page.tsx:32 'Developer sandbox', case-studies/page.tsx 'synthetic' + 'Salinas Valley grower', dashboard/recall-report/page.tsx:104 LOT-ROM, dashboard/settings/page.tsx:50 'EPCIS 2.0 Gateway' marked live). The false-positive rate is low except for one rule.

Workflow (.github/workflows/copy-lint.yml): read-only permissions, emits ::warning annotations, exits 1 only with --strict or COPY_LINT_STRICT=1 (check-copy.mjs:217), neither of which is set. The report job is not in main's required contexts (CI Status Gate, PR Gate: Backend/Frontend/Workflow Contract). All files are new.

Data: tests use only rule strings and the committed registry. No invented records, emails, IDs or dates. The denylist holds known bad strings to detect, which is correct.

Non-blocking:

  1. empty-render (check-copy.mjs:145-158) is mostly false positives: about 15 of 16 hits are JSX attribute values or object literals, not rendered text. Examples: value={severityFilter || ''} exceptions/page.tsx:291, initialEmail={params.email ?? ''} auth/verify/page.tsx:19, className={${className ?? ''} ...} tools/export/page.tsx:23, breadcrumbs.tsx:31, setUtmParams({ LeadGate.tsx:84. value={x ?? ''} is correct React for controlled inputs. Skip matches preceded by \w+= inside a tag before strict mode is turned on.
  2. invented-entity's 'test data' also catches real advice copy (blog/fsma-204-compliance-checklist-2026/page.tsx:139,174 'Test data submissions/retention'). It's still banned wording, but the rule message ('Invented supplier...') is misleading for it. Consider moving it to sample-demo.
  3. epcis-unlabeled treats 'Preview' anywhere on the source line as a label, and live-claim keys off the whole line. Both are fine for a report, but they can miss violations in dense one-line JSX.
  4. If you want the dashboard skipped, note that the roots include signed-in /dashboard. Fine to keep.
  5. CI at b8d5735 was still pending (73 pending, 2 pass, 0 fail) when I reviewed, including report. Merge only on green.

The opening-tag branch treats blank prop defaults such as input values and class names as empty rendered copy, producing false empty-render violations.

The scan includes the capability registry, so its required EDI and SFTP entries always produce copy violations despite never being rendered.

P2 Badge Restrict empty-render checks to JSX child expressions

When an empty-string fallback appears in any JSX attribute, this prefix test treats it as rendered copy. The new checker consequently reports valid controlled values and non-copy props such as value={severityFilter || ''} in frontend/src/app/exceptions/page.tsx and className={className ?? ''} in frontend/src/app/tools/export/page.tsx; 15 of the current 16 empty-render findings are cases like these rather than blank visible text. Limit this rule to expressions in JSX child position so its annotations remain actionable.

P2 Badge Decode HTML entities before checking dash rules

When JSX uses an HTML entity, the browser renders the prohibited dash but these checks only recognize literal Unicode characters. For example, frontend/src/app/about/page.tsx:106 contains &mdash;, and the repository has several other &mdash; occurrences, yet scanning <p>a &mdash; b</p> produces no finding. Normalize named and numeric dash entities before applying the dash rules.

P2 Badge Include existing JSX sources in the scan

The configured extensions omit .jsx, so the existing user-facing route frontend/src/app/onboarding/supplier-flow/page.jsx is never scanned and any future prohibited copy in that file will silently bypass this workflow. Add .jsx (and classify it as JSX in scanSource; include .js if supported) so the lint covers every source format currently present under the configured roots.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Pin both actions to commit SHAs. The workflow-tool-pinning job fails on the @v4 references.

The workflow-tool-pinning job in .github/workflows/security.yml runs on pull requests and has no if: condition. It scans every workflow under .github/workflows and rejects any uses: ref that is not a 40-character commit SHA. This PR adds .github/workflows/copy-lint.yml, so its actions/checkout@v4 and actions/setup-node@v4 references fail that job.

Pin each reference to the commit SHA shown below, and keep the version as a trailing comment.

Allowlist the registry entries.

The copy checker reports EDI and SFTP in frontend/src/lib/capabilities.ts as edi-sftp findings. Add allowlist entries for these intentionally non-rendered capability names.

Proposed allowlist entries
-    { "file": "frontend/src/lib/api-proxy.ts", "rule": "nan-undefined", "match": "bearer undefined", "reason": "Auth header guard that rejects a malformed token. Never rendered." }

Review comment at @frontend/src/lib/capabilities.ts around lines 4 - 5:
Update the copy-checker allowlist for the capability registry’s intentionally
non-rendered EDI and SFTP names, using the existing allowlist format and the
`neverShown` entries in the capabilities registry as context.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

walk matches cfg.skip against the absolute path. A checkout path can silently skip every file.

scanSource matches skip against the repo-relative path rel. walk matches it against p, which includes the repo root.

The skip list contains "/test/", ".next", .test. and .spec.. If the checkout path contains one of these, walk skips every file. An example is /home/me/test/regengine. The checker then reports 0 violations and exits 0. This is a silent false pass. It also affects --strict after the check becomes blocking.

Match against the repo-relative path with normalized separators. Pass the repo root into walk.

const files = cfg.roots.flatMap(r => walk(path.join(repo, r), [], cfg, repo));

Review comment at @scripts/copy-lint/check-copy.mjs at line 13:
Update walk to match cfg.skip against each file’s repo-relative path with
normalized separators, rather than its absolute path. Pass the repository root
into walk from its initial call and through recursive calls so
checkout-directory names cannot cause files to be skipped.
