fix(quality): exempt Rust Drop::drop from dead-code (#494) - #500
The compiler runs drop when a value leaves scope, and nothing in the source names it. So impl Drop for T { fn drop(&mut self) } was reported as dead code.
rustDropImplMethodIds builds, once per run, the Rust methods named drop (or r#drop) that belong to a Drop impl block: an ImplBlock binding (rustImplBlockOf) whose trait's last path segment is Drop, with no fn or method of the file enclosing the method inside that block. The trait is the test, never the implementor's name.
isDeadCandidate takes that set at both call sites (addDeadSet and appendDeadCodeRows), the way it takes registeredMacroSymbolIds.
Which languages carry the rule is a LangFacts column, dropRunsAtScopeExit, set on the Rust row.
Exempt: impl Drop for Guard, impl<T> Drop for Gen<T>, impl std::ops::Drop for Q, and fn r#drop in a Drop impl.
Still reported: a free fn drop, one in a mod, one nested in a Drop::drop body; an inherent drop; a drop in another trait or its impl (the same rows as main); a C++ method named drop.
languageInvokedSymbol is the same as on main. An earlier push of this PR changed queries/rust/tags.scm and kParserVer; that route is reverted, so the grammar and kParserVer equal main.
Cache scheme
The dead set changed for Rust, so kQSnapCacheScheme is 27: main took v25 (#496), and #499 holds v26, so the two never share a value. rustDropImplMethodIds is on the qschemetripcheck manifest, and test/qschemetrip.hash is re-pinned, with the log entry in qschemetripcheck.sh.
If both PRs land, src/langfacts.h conflicts on the two adjacent new columns (keep both, .attributeRegistersTests before .dropRunsAtScopeExit), and src/quality.h on the adjacent scheme notes and manifest lines.
Tests
test/qddialscheck.sh sections 2b and 2c judge each case by its p="file:line", not by a symbol substring. Positives are the exempt shapes above; negatives are the still-reported shapes above and an orphan helper.
On the pre-change binary the positive cases are red (Guard, Gen<T>, std::ops::Drop, r#drop, and a Drop impl whose body holds nested items), and the negatives pass there too. On this branch: qddialscheck: ALL PASS (60 assertions).
On the current head (5c77d02) these gates pass: qddialscheck, qschemetripcheck, qextractionkeycheck, registermacrocheck, deadcheck, changelogfragcheck, ifacedispatchcheck, matchgrammarcheck; deadfiltercheck, deadprecisioncheck, testonlydeadcheck, forunusedcheck, qsnapcachecheck, qualitycheck and headsnapcachecheck pass on the same source. The full suite was not re-run on this head.
Full suite, on the first head of this PR (python3 test/pargates.py . build/ripwire -j 10): 758 gates. Nine fail, and the same nine fail on main at b0f7e2fc:
I have not diagnosed these nine. No gate failed there that passes on main, but that was not a green suite.
Main merge
Main is merged up to 824847b (#512). #514 is not merged into the branch: it changes .github/workflows/release.yml, and my push token cannot write workflow files. #514 touches none of this PR's files, and the PR merges cleanly with current main.
Floors and deferrals
A user-defined trait whose last path segment is Drop counts the same as std::ops::Drop.
A method in an impl header (a block inside a const generic argument) lies in no fn body, so it is exempt too. No test covers that shape.
A #[automock] trait named Drop names no implementor, so its method never counts.
Built and tested with gcc 13.3 on Ubuntu 24.04. Not run on clang or macOS.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Rust Drop::drop methods are no longer reported as dead code because they run automatically when a value leaves scope. Other functions and methods named drop remain reportable.
…#494)
qddialscheck.sh section 2 owns the rule that exempts what the language invokes
(constructors, destructors, operators). Section 2b adds the Rust case: the
drop method of `impl Drop for Guard` is run by the compiler at scope exit, and no
call names it.
Red on main: Guard::drop is reported as dead-code. Green-only negatives: a free
function named drop, a C++ method named drop, and an ordinary orphan helper must
all still be reported, so the exemption cannot widen into a name-only rule.
Refs redhat-et#494
A Rust method named drop is run by the compiler when a value leaves scope, and no
call names it, so its zero in-edges say nothing. languageInvokedSymbol already
exempts the C++ destructor for the same reason; this adds the Rust counterpart.
Which languages carry this rule is a LangFacts column, dropRunsAtScopeExit, set on
the Rust row, so the shared code does not compare against Lang::Rust and the
== Lang:: ratchet in langidentitycheck does not rise.
The rule reads the symbol's language, kind and name, not its signature text, so an
inherent method named drop is read the same way. That errs toward live, the
direction this predicate is required to err in, and it is stated as a floor in
the code comment. Free functions named drop and C++ methods named drop are not
exempt.
languageInvokedSymbol is now a watched function in the qschemetrip manifest,
because it is part of the dead-set predicate. The dead set changed for Rust, so
kQSnapCacheScheme moves 24 -> 25. No extraction output changes, so kParserVer does
not move.
Refs redhat-et#494
languageInvokedSymbol joins the manifest and kQSnapCacheScheme moves 24 -> 25 in
the fix commit. The pin is re-derived with UPDATE_GOLDEN=1, and the re-pin log
records what moved and why.

Walkthrough
The change adds a Rust language fact for scope-exit drop methods and uses it to exclude matching methods from dead-code reporting. A regression fixture checks the exemption and preserves reporting for similarly named functions and methods in other cases.
LangFacts records whether a language invokes drop at scope exit. languageInvokedSymbol uses this fact to exempt Rust methods named drop. The cache scheme changes from 24 to 25.
Regression fixture and changelog test/qddialscheck.sh, changelog.d/rust-drop-dead-code.md
The fixture verifies that Rust Drop::drop is not reported, while a Rust free function named drop, a C++ method named drop, and an orphan helper remain reportable. The changelog describes the behavior.
Dead-code results can incorrectly include raw-spelled destructors or omit module-level functions named drop. These are bounded reporting errors.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the dead-code check now exempts Rust Drop::drop. It also cites the linked issue #494. The changeset adds this exemption in src/quality.h, a Rust-specific fact in src/langfacts.h, and regression tests. The title is specific and matches the changeset. One nuance: the implementation exempts all Rust methods named drop, including inherent methods, not only the Drop::drop trait method. The title is still a fair summary at the level a reviewer scans. The title uses a conventional commit prefix and is 58 characters long.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #494 requires that drop in impl Drop for T count as invoked, so it is not reported as dead code. The PR adds dropRunsAtScopeExit to LangFacts (src/langfacts.h), sets it on the Rust row, and makes languageInvokedSymbol (src/quality.h) exempt a method (SymKind::Method) named drop when that fact is set. This covers the Drop::drop case. The issue's control, a plain uncalled method, is still reportable because the rule matches only the name drop and the method kind. test/qddialscheck.sh section 2b adds a positive fixture for impl Drop for Guard and negatives for a free fn drop(), a C++ Holder::drop, and orphan_helper. The PR reports that this section passes on this branch and fails on main. The assessment relies on the PR description, the objectives, and the change summary. No repository inspection was made for this review. The rule also exempts inherent Rust methods named drop. The issue does not ask for that. The PR states this as a deliberate floor that errs toward not reporting, and it defers the trait-versus-inherent split. This is a known over-exemption, not an unmet requirement of #494.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Each changed file connects to the #494 fix or to its required supporting work. changelog.d/rust-drop-dead-code.md documents the behavior change. src/langfacts.h adds the fact and sets it for Rust. src/quality.h changes languageInvokedSymbol, which is the exemption point. The same file bumps kQSnapCacheScheme from 24 to 25. The PR states this bump is required because the dead set changed for Rust. test/qddialscheck.sh adds the regression fixture. test/qschemetripcheck.sh records the manifest addition of languageInvokedSymbol and the scheme change. The PR states that languageInvokedSymbol joins the manifest because it is part of the isDeadCandidate exemption chain. test/qschemetrip.hash is in ignored_files, matching the exclusion rule !test/*.hash. It was not inspected, and its absence is not evidence of a problem. Its re-pin is a consequence of the scheme bump, not a separate change. No change was shown to be unrelated to #494. Inherent-method exemption is a broader reach of the same rule, not an unrelated change, and the PR discloses it.

…e fn (redhat-et#494 review)
Two review findings on the Drop::drop exemption:
- The raw spelling r#drop was not exempt. The extractor keeps the r# in the
name, so languageInvokedSymbol now accepts both spellings.
- A free function named drop inside mod m { } was exempt. The tags query
captured every function_item under any declaration_list as a method, and a
mod body is one. Method capture now sits under impl_item and trait_item
bodies only, so a module-level fn stays a Function.
tags.scm changed extraction, so kParserVer 283 -> 284 (mirror in quality.h),
and the dead-set scheme 25 -> 26 for the new semantics. Re-pinned
test/qschemetrip.hash. qddialscheck section 2c adds the r#drop case and a
module-level drop checked by file:line.
…#499 holds 26)
The Rust test-attribute PR (redhat-et#499) takes v26 and this PR takes v27, so the two
open scheme bumps never share a value whichever merges first. Re-pinned
test/qschemetrip.hash.
Addressed the module-level fn drop() finding (review 5730827771) in b4e042c. queries/rust/tags.scm now captures a method only inside an impl_item or trait_item body, so a free function inside mod m { ... } stays a Function and is reported. The extraction changed, so kParserVer is 284 and the dead-set scheme is 27 (#499 holds 26). Regression: qddialscheck.sh section 2c checks m::drop by file:line. Final head 0b57c07.
Thank you, @zom-2018. This is a clear, well-scoped fix, and the PR text names its own floor (inherent drop), which made it easy to test. I built the head and the head merged onto current main (and on top of #499), and ran qddialscheck, qschemetripcheck and the dead-code gates. impl Drop for Guard, impl<T> Drop for Gen<T> and impl std::ops::Drop for Q are all exempt now. A top-level fn drop() and a C++ Holder::drop are still reported. On the main binary your section 2b is red, as you said. Adding languageInvokedSymbol to the tripwire manifest was a good catch too.
What I found, each with a repro:
1. A drop inside a module is exempt (CodeRabbit's second thread, real).
mod util {pubfndrop(){}}
util::drop is no longer reported. A function in a mod body is indexed as SymKind::Method, because a module body and an impl body are both a declaration_list. So this name-and-kind rule sees it as Drop::drop. The changelog says "A free function named drop ... still reported", which holds only at the top level.
2. Inherent and other-trait drop methods are exempt too. Your PR text already names the inherent case:
structPlain(u32);implPlain{fndrop(&mutself){}}// never called: exempttraitCloser{fndrop(&mutself){}}// exemptimplCloserforC1{fndrop(&mutself){}}// exempt
You wrote that Symbol has no field for the trait an impl implements, and that is right. The ingest does record it in a different place, though: Rust trait impl blocks become ing.bindings rows with kind == LocalBindKind::ImplBlock. Each row's var is the trait's final segment (Drop for std::ops::Drop, generics stripped). spanStart/spanEnd are the impl block's bytes, and fileId is its file. See rustImplBlockOf and pushImplBlock in src/ingest_binds.h, and the reader in src/ifacedispatch.h. A precise rule exempts a Rust method named drop only when its sigStartByte falls inside an ImplBlock span of the same file whose var == "Drop". That fixes 1 and 2 together. languageInvokedSymbol only sees a Symbol, so the set would be built once per run, as registeredMacroSymbolIds is, and consulted in isDeadCandidate. Put the new helper on the tripwire manifest as well. Measured on large Rust repos (nushell, zed, helix): about 171 fn drop in impl Drop blocks and 1 inherent one. So the imprecision is rare, but the repro in 1 contradicts the changelog. Please either fix it or narrow the changelog sentence.
3. r#drop is missed (CodeRabbit's first thread, real; rare).impl Drop for Raw { fn r#drop(&mut self) {} } is still reported, because the symbol's name keeps the r# prefix. Comparing against "drop" or "r#drop" fixes it. I found no r#drop in the large Rust repos above, so this is cheap to add but optional.
4. Rebase: main already took qsnap scheme v25.#496 bumped kQSnapCacheScheme to 25. On rebase, take the next free number (26 if this lands before #499, 27 after), keep the earlier notes, update the re-pin log line in qschemetripcheck.sh, and run UPDATE_GOLDEN=1 bash test/qschemetripcheck.sh. The hash conflict is regenerate-only. If #499 is already in, src/langfacts.h conflicts on the two adjacent new columns. Keep both, and on the Rust row write .attributeRegistersTests = true, .dropRunsAtScopeExit = true (declaration order).
Nice to have:
In section 2b, add the mod util { fn drop } and inherent impl Plain { fn drop } shapes as negatives (they still have to be reported), and impl<T> Drop for Gen<T> plus r#drop as positives. Today's single positive is the plainest form.
Thanks again. Item 4 is mechanical. Items 1 and 2 are one change if you take the ImplBlock route. Happy to look again after that.
Merges main up to redhat-et#512. redhat-et#514 (dfd26fc) is left for the next main merge: it changes
.github/workflows/release.yml, and this fork's push token cannot write workflow files.
redhat-et#514 touches none of this PR's files.
…s Rust grammar
The redhat-et#494 fix first changed queries/rust/tags.scm and bumped kParserVer to 284.
The maintainer review asks for the ImplBlock route instead: exempt a method named
drop only when it sits in a Drop impl block. That needs no grammar change, so
queries/rust/tags.scm and kParserVer / kIngestParserVerMirror return to main's
values (289 both).
…redhat-et#494 review)
The maintainer review found the name-only Rust rule too wide: a free fn drop
inside a mod, an inherent method named drop, and a drop method of another trait
were all exempt. The exemption now follows the ImplBlock record of the Drop trait.
- rustDropImplMethodIds (quality.h): a method named drop or r#drop is exempt when
it is a direct member of an ImplBlock binding whose var (the trait's final
segment) is Drop and whose typeName (the implementor) is set. A def of the same
file that lies inside that block and encloses the method means the method is
nested in another body, so it is not a member of the block. The implementor's
name never decides the match; a mock trait named Drop names no implementor, so
it never counts.
- languageInvokedSymbol loses its name-only Rust drop rule. Its text is main's
again, so it leaves the tripwire manifest (main does not list it either).
- isDeadCandidate takes the set; addDeadSet and appendDeadCodeRows build it once.
- kQSnapCacheScheme 25 -> 27 (26 is held by redhat-et#499). kParserVer stays 289.
- test/qddialscheck.sh 2b/2c judge each case on its own file:line (the p=
attribute), positives and the review's negatives, Closer shapes included.
Red first: the baseline binary fails the five positives and passes every negative.
- test/qschemetrip.hash re-pinned (ab16162e... -> 3bb8ea86...).
FLOOR: a user-defined trait whose last path segment is Drop counts the same as
std::ops::Drop.
…hat-et#494 review)
An advisor review asked whether "exempt only as a direct member of a Drop impl block"
holds without qualification. It does not: the nested test reads only the captured fn
and method symbols. A method in the impl header (a block in a const generic argument)
sits in no body, so the rule exempts it. No test covers that shape, and an owner-name
check would close it, but the review rule forbids matching on the implementor name.
Comment only. The hashed manifest text is the function body, so the pin is unchanged.
… (review follow-up)
The fragment described the superseded name-only rule. It now states the
ImplBlock rule: a method named drop or r#drop is exempt inside an impl Drop
block, and it lists what stays reported. The line "not a direct member of an
impl Drop block" was wrong for the impl-header shape, which is exempt; the
reworded clause covers only a drop nested in another function's body.
The impl-header floor was probed on the built binary (an inherent drop inside a
block in a Drop impl's generic arguments is not reported, while a sibling
helper on the same line is). It is documented as a floor, not a test.
…change broke
The dropImplIds sentence broke mid-line ("`exemptedByRegisterMacro`," then
"when non-null, is" on its own line). Reflowed the paragraph; wording unchanged
except "builds: every call site" became two sentences.
Comment only. extract_fn in test/qschemetripcheck.sh starts at the inline line,
so the manifest hash is unchanged and the pin stays 3bb8ea86.
1 + 2. 7e03f38 replaces the name rule: rustDropImplMethodIds exempts a method named drop or r#drop only when it lies in an ImplBlock whose trait (var) is Drop and no fn or method of the file encloses it inside that block. It is built once per run and passed to isDeadCandidate at both call sites, and it is on the tripwire manifest. languageInvokedSymbol is back to main's text. An intermediate push had fixed the mod case through queries/rust/tags.scm and a kParserVer bump; 02bf7ec reverts that, so the grammar and kParserVer equal main. Now reported: a top-level fn drop, mod util { fn drop }, inherent Plain::drop, Closer::drop and C1::drop (the same rows as the main binary), and a fn drop nested in a Drop::drop body. Exempt: impl Drop for Guard, impl<T> Drop for Gen<T>, impl std::ops::Drop for Q, r#drop. The changelog names the floors: a user trait whose last segment is Drop, and a method in an impl header.
3. r#drop is accepted (b4e042c), with a regression case.
4. Scheme v27 (above main's v25 and #499's v26), re-pinned, re-pin log updated. If both land, langfacts.h conflicts on the adjacent columns (keep both, .attributeRegistersTests before .dropRunsAtScopeExit) and quality.h on the adjacent scheme notes and manifest lines.
Nice-to-have: sections 2b and 2c now judge each case by p="file:line", with the shapes above. On the pre-change binary exactly the positive cases are red.
Main is merged up to 824847b. #514 is not in the branch because it changes .github/workflows/release.yml and my token cannot push workflow files; it touches none of this PR's files and the PR merges cleanly.
Local checks on this head: qddialscheck, qschemetripcheck, qextractionkeycheck, registermacrocheck, deadcheck, changelogfragcheck, ifacedispatchcheck, matchgrammarcheck pass. The full suite was not re-run. The CI run is waiting for approval (action_required); could you approve it?
