fix(quality): exempt Rust #[test] functions from dead-code (#493) - #499
A #[test] or #[tokio::test] function is run by the test harness, not called by name, so its zero in-edges say nothing. --quality-delta reported every new test as dead code. --dead-code lists no Rust rows on main (its internal-linkage rule is C-family only), so its output does not change today; both verbs read the same predicate (registersItself), so they stay in step.
The attribute stacks above the item, outside the signature text the built-in macro check reads, so this adds a report-time rule:
rustTestAttributed scans backwards from the item over blank lines, // comments and other attribute lines, and matches the whole attribute token: test, or tokio::test with an optional argument list. #[testing], #[tested] and a #[test] inside a comment do not match. An attribute line must start with #[, so const A: u32 = 1; #[test] does not count, and a trailing // comment is cut first (outside a string), so #[test] // case does. #[test_case] (the test-case crate) is not supported yet.
Which languages carry the rule is a LangFacts column, attributeRegistersTests, set on the Rust row. Shared code reads the column rather than comparing against Lang::Rust, so the == Lang:: ratchet in langidentitycheck does not rise.
Both verbs read one predicate, registersItself, so they cannot disagree about a symbol. The exemption counts toward register-macro-excluded=.
forEachSymbolBody keeps its three-argument visitor for every existing caller. forEachSymbolFile is the whole-file variant that registeredMacroSymbolIds uses.
Cache scheme
The dead set changed for Rust test code, so a cached quality snapshot changed meaning. Main took v25 (#496, isTestPath), so this PR is v26 (kQSnapCacheScheme = 26; main's v25 note is kept). The companion PR #500 takes v27, so the two never share a value. registersItself, rustTestAttributed, isRustTestAttribute and rustCodeOfAttributeLine are on the tripwire manifest, and test/qschemetrip.hash is re-pinned, with the log entry in qschemetripcheck.sh (25 → 26).
Open PRs #420, #427 and #429 also touch test/qschemetripcheck.sh. If one of them lands first, this PR renumbers and re-pins.
Tests
test/registermacrocheck.sh gains arms 9, 10 and 11.
Arm 9 covers eight #[test] shapes: plain, #[tokio::test(flavor = …)], stacked under #[inline], a blank line between attribute and item, a doc comment between them, a test directly followed by a dead fn, #[test] fn on one line, and an indented #[test] inside #[cfg(test)] mod tests. Negative lookalikes must still be flagged: #[testing], #[tested], a commented // #[test], static X: u32 = 1; // used to be #[test], const A: u32 = 1; #[test], a dead fn after a test item, and an ordinary dead fn. Arm 11 covers a trailing comment after #[test] and #[tokio::test], and a // inside an attribute string.
Arm 10 checks that a dangling #[test] at end of file does not crash the scan.
On the main binary the arm is red, as intended:
FAIL arm9: 'plain_case' is a #[test] function but was reported as dead-code
FAIL arm9: register-macro-excluded count wrong
The review round's new negative is red on the previous head (ee3c07a):
FAIL arm9: 'not_a_test_after_code' should still be flagged — the test-attribute exemption leaked
On this branch: ALL PASS (53 assertions).
On the current head (d09c126) these gates pass: registermacrocheck, testscopecheck, qschemetripcheck, qextractionkeycheck, showcasecapturecheck, docscommandscheck, printffmtparitycheck, legendcostcheck, qddialscheck; compactlegendcheck, legenddriftcheck, legendcoveragecheck, legendrefcheck and panellegendcheck pass on the same source. The full suite was not re-run on this head.
Full suite, on the first head of this PR (python3 test/pargates.py . build/ripwire -j 10): 758 gates. Nine fail, and the same nine fail on main at b0f7e2fc:
I have not diagnosed these nine. No gate fails here that passes on main, but this is not a green suite. spectimingcheck.sh failed once under parallel load, and passed when run alone on both trees and in the next full run.
Sanitizer, on the first head (cmake -DRIPWIRE_ASAN=ON, gcc 13.3, LSAN_OPTIONS=suppressions=lsan_suppressions.txt): registermacrocheck, deadcheck, deadprecisioncheck, testonlydeadcheck and langidentitycheck pass. No sanitizer reports.
Byte identity, on the first head: 31 argument sets, covering --dead-code, --quality-delta, --for, --expand, --callers, --uses, --impact, --map, --metrics, --test-gate and --quality-panel. Output from main and this branch is identical.
Docs
register-macro-excluded= now counts Rust test functions too, so its legend says so: the dead-code and quality-delta rows in src/compactlegend.h, kQdRegisterMacroLegend and the --dead-code header text. The newest capture's --legend-dictdictv=/entries= pair is re-recorded from the built binary, as scripts/merge_main.sh --regen-after-build does, and docs/COMMANDS.md is regenerated with docs/docs_commands_build.py. test/showcase_capture.py refuses to write on this branch's history (no --since=HEAD~N window in [2,14] fits its --in=src case), so the captured sample text keeps main's legend wording until the next capture.
Main merge
Main is merged up to 824847b (#512). #514 is not merged into the branch: it changes .github/workflows/release.yml, and my push token cannot write workflow files. #514 touches none of this PR's files, and the PR merges cleanly with current main.
Floors and deferrals
A multi-line attribute, or a block comment between the attribute and the item, ends the scan. The item then stays a dead-code candidate. That is a reporting miss, never a false exemption.
Only test and tokio::test are recognized. Other test attributes (gpui::test and other …::test paths, rstest, wasm_bindgen_test, quickcheck, test_case, …) each need their own spelling and tests. They are a follow-up.
#[test] #[ignore] on one line: the last attribute on the line decides, so the test stays reported. A reporting miss, not a false exemption.
Built and tested with gcc 13.3 on Ubuntu 24.04. Not run on clang or macOS.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Rust functions marked with #[test] or #[tokio::test] are no longer reported as dead code and are included in registered-macro exclusions.
Supported test attributes with arguments are recognized. Lookalike or commented-out attributes and ordinary uncalled functions remain subject to dead-code reporting.
A dangling #[test] attribute at the end of a file no longer causes quality-delta checks to return an unexpected status.
registermacrocheck.sh gains two arms for #[test] / #[tokio::test] functions, which
the test harness calls by name and the call graph never sees.
Arm 9 fails on main: six #[test] shapes are reported as dead-code. Its negative
lookalikes must keep being flagged: an attribute inside a comment, #[testing],
#[test_case], a dead fn placed directly after a #[test] item, and an ordinary dead
fn. Arm 10 pins that a dangling #[test] at end of file does not break the scan.

A #[test] or #[tokio::test] function is called by the test harness, which the
name-based call graph never sees. --quality-delta reported every new test as a
dead-code row, and the --dead-code verb repeated the same rule.
The attribute stacks above the item, outside the signature text the built-in
macro check reads, so it needs its own report-time rule. rustTestAttributed
scans backwards from the item over blank lines, // comments and other attribute
lines, and matches the whole attribute token: #[test], or #[tokio::test] with an
optional argument list. #[testing], #[test_case] and a #[test] inside a comment
do not match.
Which languages carry this rule is a LangFacts column, attributeRegistersTests,
set on the Rust row. The shared code reads the column rather than comparing
against Lang::Rust, so the == Lang:: ratchet in langidentitycheck does not rise.
Both verbs read one predicate (registersItself), so they cannot disagree about a
symbol. The exemption counts toward register-macro-excluded=.
The dead set changed for Rust test code, so the cached quality snapshot changed
meaning. kQSnapCacheScheme moves 24 -> 25 (quality.h v25 note), as the
qschemetripcheck tripwire requires. The hash re-pin is its own commit.
forEachSymbolBody keeps its three-argument visitor for every existing caller. The
whole-file variant forEachSymbolFile is the one registeredMacroSymbolIds uses.
Floor, stated: a multi-line attribute, or a block comment between the attribute and
the item, ends the scan. The item then stays a dead-code candidate, a miss in the
reporting direction and never a false exemption.

Walkthrough
Rust #[test] and #[tokio::test] functions are recognized as self-registering symbols and excluded from dead-code reporting. The change adds source-aware detection, updates quality-reporting checks, and adds regression coverage.
Rust is marked as supporting test-registration attributes. Symbol iteration exposes full file text, and shared checks recognize supported Rust test attributes and preceding attribute forms.
Dead-code integration and regression coverage src/quality.h, src/verbs_quality.h, test/registermacrocheck.sh, test/qschemetripcheck.sh, changelog.d/rust-test-harness-dead-code.md
Quality reporting uses the shared self-registration check. Tests distinguish supported attributes from lookalikes and commented attributes, check a dangling attribute, and verify dead-code exclusions. The qsnap cache scheme changes from 24 to 25.
Some Rust tests may be incorrectly reported as dead code, and the exclusion legend is incomplete. The remaining risk is bounded.

Explanation
Issue #493 requires Rust test-harness functions to avoid dead-code reporting while ordinary unused functions remain reportable. The change adds shared registersItself handling for Rust #[test] and #[tokio::test], enables it through LangFacts, and uses it in both quality views and registered-macro exclusion. Arm 9 tests supported attributes and negative lookalikes. The reported tests confirm the required behavior.

Update the quality-delta exclusion legend.
After this change, register-macro-excluded= can count Rust #[test] functions. The emitted legend says the count contains only self-registering macro calls. Include Rust test attributes in that explanation so a Rust-only count does not describe registrations that were not present. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

#[test] // case was not recognised: rustTestAttributed required the line to end

…tributes (redhat-et#499 review)
The count now includes Rust #[test] and #[tokio::test] functions, so the
legend says so. The registermacrocheck fixture puts the doc comment between
the attribute and the item, as its own comment says it does.
Gates: registermacrocheck, docscommandscheck, legend*, compactlegendcheck,
panellegendcheck all pass.
Addressed both review-body items (review 5730844953) in ee3c07a. The register-macro-excluded= legend now names Rust #[test] and #[tokio::test] functions, and the registermacrocheck fixture puts the doc comment between the attribute and the item. The legend and command-doc gates pass locally.
Thank you, @zom-2018. This is a careful PR. The LangFacts column is a good choice, and so is the one shared predicate (registersItself) that both verbs read. The red-first run, the floors section and the byte-identity sweep made it quick to review. I built the head and the head merged onto current main, and ran the new arms plus qschemetripcheck, qddialscheck and the dead-code gates. The six #[test] shapes in arm 9 work. So do pub fn, pub(crate) async fn, #[test] fn x() on one line, #[should_panic] above or below, #[cfg(test)] #[test] on one line, CRLF files, tests/*.rs and a #[test] inside #[cfg(test)] mod tests. On the main binary arm 9 is red, as you said.
A few things to fix before merge, each with a repro:
1. A trailing comment that mentions #[test] exempts the next function (false exemption).
staticX:u32 = 1;// used to be #[test]fnreally_dead(){}
really_dead is no longer reported, and it counts toward register-macro-excluded=. The line does not start with //, ends in ], and rfind("#[") lands inside the comment. The PR text says a floor is "never a false exemption", so this shape goes against it. One fix closes this and also CodeRabbit's inline thread (#[test] // regression case above a test, which is currently still reported). Cut a trailing // comment off the line, but not one inside a string in the attribute. Then treat the line as an attribute line only when it starts with #[ and ends with ]. Please add both shapes to arm 9: the lookalike as a negative, #[test] // note as a positive.
2. Rebase: main already took qsnap scheme v25.#496 (land-472) bumped kQSnapCacheScheme to 25 for the isTestPath change. On rebase, keep main's v25 note, make yours v26 (= 26), and run UPDATE_GOLDEN=1 bash test/qschemetripcheck.sh. The hash conflict is regenerate-only. Also update the re-pin log line in qschemetripcheck.sh from "24 -> 25 (quality.h's v25 note)" to "25 -> 26 (v26)". Whichever of this PR and #500 lands second takes 27. In my local merge of both, the only extra conflicts were the two adjacent new LangFacts columns and the Rust row's initializers. Keep both, with .attributeRegistersTests before .dropRunsAtScopeExit (declaration order).
3. Put the new helpers on the tripwire manifest. The list above kQSnapCacheScheme in quality.h is what qschemetripcheck hashes. This time the hash moved because registeredMacroSymbolIds' text changed. A later edit to rustTestAttributed or isRustTestAttribute alone would change the dead set without tripping the gate. That is the B10.1a hole the gate exists for. Please add registersItself, rustTestAttributed and isRustTestAttribute (#500 does the same for languageInvokedSymbol), then re-pin.
4. The register-macro-excluded= legend no longer describes what it counts (CodeRabbit's outside-diff comment, real). On a Rust-only fixture the default output now says register-macro-excluded="13" next to the legend text "symbols kept out of dead-code as self-registering test/bench macros". None of those 13 is a macro. The text lives in src/compactlegend.h (the dead-code and quality-delta rows) and kQdRegisterMacroLegend in src/verbs_quality.h (the family roster, printed when the count is non-zero). A few words fix it, for example "...macros or Rust test attributes". Changing legend text re-records the captured legends, so run UPDATE_GOLDEN=1 bash test/printffmtparitycheck.sh and refresh the captured legends in docs/COMMANDS.md (test/showcasecapturecheck.sh names them) in the same commit.
Nice to have, fine as a follow-up:
CodeRabbit's nitpick is right. In arm 9, doc_comment_case has its /// line above#[test], so the scan never crosses a comment between the attribute and the item. Move the doc line between them. Only a review-side fixture covers that today.
#[test_case] is a real test registration. The test-case crate's #[test_case(1; "one")] generates the tests, and the bare #[test_case] is nightly's custom_test_frameworks marker. Pinning it as "only looks like the test attribute" (arm 9 and the changelog) bakes in a claim that is not true. #[tested] or #[testing] makes a cleaner lookalike. You can keep test_case unsupported. Just leave it out of the "not a test" list.
Coverage, measured on large Rust repos. In zed, #[gpui::test]/#[gpui::test(...)] appears about 6,450 times, against about 4,500 plain #[test]. nushell has about 445 #[rstest] and 94 #[nu_test_support::test]. Accepting any path that ends in ::test (gpui::test, async_std::test, test_log::test, sqlx::test, crate::test), plus rstest and bench, would cover most of the remaining tests. Your deferral note already says this. The counts are here to help size the follow-up.
The PR body says --dead-code reported every new test. On main, --dead-code lists no Rust rows at all, because its internal-linkage rule is C-family only. So the verb change keeps the two verbs in step without changing any --dead-code output today. Worth a word in the body, not in the code.
Thanks again. With 1-4 done this looks ready to me.
Merges main up to redhat-et#512. redhat-et#514 (dfd26fc) is left for the next main merge: it changes
.github/workflows/release.yml, and this fork's push token cannot write workflow files.
redhat-et#514 touches none of this PR's files.
…ribute line
rustTestAttributed treated any line that held `#[` and ended in `]` as an attribute line. So `const A: u32 = 1; #[test]` exempted the function written below it, and that function was hidden from --dead-code and --quality-delta. A line now counts as an attribute line only when, after its leading whitespace and any trailing `//` comment, it starts with `#[`. Any other code ends the scan.
The four Rust test-attribute helpers join the scheme tripwire manifest, and test/qschemetrip.hash is re-pinned. The re-pin log entry now reads kQSnapCacheScheme 25 -> 26 (v26). The scheme stays at 26: this PR has not shipped v26, and the producer identity (a content hash of src/) already keeps a blob written before this change from being served to this build.
Raised in the maintainer review of redhat-et#499.
…ribute
Arm 9 gains the repro as a negative: `const A: u32 = 1; #[test]` followed by a dead fn. A trailing comment that only mentions the attribute (`static X: u32 = 1; // used to be #[test]`) followed by a dead fn is the negative control. The positives gain a one-line `#[test] fn` and a #[test] indented inside `#[cfg(test)] mod tests { }`. The register-macro-excluded assertion moves to 8.
The #[test_case] lookalike becomes #[tested]. test_case is a real test registration that this change does not support, so the gate no longer calls it "not a test". The changelog fragment drops #[test_case] from its list of lookalikes, lists #[tested], and names the same-line case.
Red-first: against the pre-change binary, arm 9 fails `not_a_test_after_code` (wrongly exempted) and the count (9, not 8).
Raised in the maintainer review of redhat-et#499.
The register-macro-excluded= rows in the dead-code and quality-delta compact legends (src/compactlegend.h), the kQdRegisterMacroLegend constant, and the dead-code header comment (src/verbs_quality.h) now say the count includes Rust #[test] and #[tokio::test] functions. The quality-delta row says "skipped" where it said "kept out of dead-code": the longer wording with "Rust test attributes" put the compact quality-delta legend 16 B over its 940 B budget (compactlegendcheck), and "Rust #[test]" with "skipped" measures 934 B.
Raised in the maintainer review of redhat-et#499.
…ode row
The register-macro-excluded= dead-code legend row now reads "...self-registering test/bench macros (TEST, BENCHMARK...) or Rust #[test]", so the examples sit next to the macros they name and the Rust attribute is the trailing clause. The wording is the same length (126 B) and the quality-delta row is unchanged.
Follow-up to the maintainer review of redhat-et#499.
…at-et#499 follow-up)
The newest capture's --legend-dict line, and the two places that quote that exact pair (docs/COMMANDS.md, changelog.d/versions.md), now carry the live dictionary of the rebuilt binary. The capture's legend-dict pair was dictv=02b8cec3f8563e22 entries=1014, and the live pair is dictv=2451f0e77d06e369 entries=1014. The changed dead-code legend row is the cause. No other byte of the capture moved.
Done by hand, with the same grep, sed and replacement steps as scripts/merge_main.sh --regen-after-build, because this merge (0772277f) carries no REGEN AFTER BUILD mark. docs/docs_commands_build.py --bin build/ripwire and its --check both pass. The older capture (2026-10-31) keeps its own pair.

…redhat-et#494 review)
The maintainer review found the name-only Rust rule too wide: a free fn drop
inside a mod, an inherent method named drop, and a drop method of another trait
were all exempt. The exemption now follows the ImplBlock record of the Drop trait.
- rustDropImplMethodIds (quality.h): a method named drop or r#drop is exempt when
it is a direct member of an ImplBlock binding whose var (the trait's final
segment) is Drop and whose typeName (the implementor) is set. A def of the same
file that lies inside that block and encloses the method means the method is
nested in another body, so it is not a member of the block. The implementor's
name never decides the match; a mock trait named Drop names no implementor, so
it never counts.
- languageInvokedSymbol loses its name-only Rust drop rule. Its text is main's
again, so it leaves the tripwire manifest (main does not list it either).
- isDeadCandidate takes the set; addDeadSet and appendDeadCodeRows build it once.
- kQSnapCacheScheme 25 -> 27 (26 is held by redhat-et#499). kParserVer stays 289.
- test/qddialscheck.sh 2b/2c judge each case on its own file:line (the p=
attribute), positives and the review's negatives, Closer shapes included.
Red first: the baseline binary fails the five positives and passes every negative.
- test/qschemetrip.hash re-pinned (ab16162e... -> 3bb8ea86...).
FLOOR: a user-defined trait whose last path segment is Drop counts the same as
std::ops::Drop.
Thanks for the careful review, @joyful-ii-V-I. Your pass was on an earlier head, so a few items were already in flight. All of 1–4 are done on d09c126.
False exemption.b1efc83 cuts a trailing // comment off the line, but not one inside a string, so #[test] // regression case counts. 64caf67 treats a line as an attribute line only when it starts with #[ (after indentation) and ends with ], so static X: u32 = 1; // used to be #[test] and const A: u32 = 1; #[test] both stay reported. Arm 9 has both lookalikes as negatives, plus #[test] fn on one line and an indented #[test] in #[cfg(test)] mod tests as positives; #[test] // note is in arm 11. On the previous head arm 9 is red on not_a_test_after_code.
Manifest.registersItself, rustTestAttributed, isRustTestAttribute and rustCodeOfAttributeLine are on it; re-pinned.
Legend. Both compactlegend.h rows, kQdRegisterMacroLegend and the --dead-code header text name Rust #[test]. printffmtparitycheck moved no label. The newest capture's dictv=/entries= pair is re-recorded from the built binary the way merge_main.sh --regen-after-build does it, and docs/COMMANDS.md is regenerated. showcase_capture.py refuses on this branch's history (no --since window fits), so the captured sample text keeps main's wording until the next capture.
Nice-to-haves: the doc comment now sits between #[test] and the item (ee3c07a); #[test_case] is replaced by #[tested] and the changelog no longer calls test_case a non-test; …::test/rstest coverage is a follow-up (thanks for the counts); the PR body now says --dead-code lists no Rust rows today.
Main is merged up to 824847b. #514 is not in the branch because it changes .github/workflows/release.yml and my token cannot push workflow files; it touches none of this PR's files and the PR merges cleanly.
Local checks on this head: registermacrocheck, testscopecheck, qschemetripcheck, qextractionkeycheck, showcasecapturecheck, docscommandscheck, printffmtparitycheck, legendcostcheck, qddialscheck pass. The full suite was not re-run. The CI run is waiting for approval (action_required); could you approve it?

Fixes #493
What
A
#[test]or#[tokio::test]function is run by the test harness, not called by name, so its zero in-edges say nothing.--quality-deltareported every new test as dead code.--dead-codelists no Rust rows onmain(its internal-linkage rule is C-family only), so its output does not change today; both verbs read the same predicate (registersItself), so they stay in step. The attribute stacks above the item, outside the signature text the built-in macro check reads, so this adds a report-time rule:
rustTestAttributedscans backwards from the item over blank lines,//comments and other attribute lines, and matches the whole attribute token:test, ortokio::testwith an optional argument list.#[testing],#[tested]and a#[test]inside a comment do not match. An attribute line must start with#[, soconst A: u32 = 1; #[test]does not count, and a trailing//comment is cut first (outside a string), so#[test] // casedoes.#[test_case](the test-case crate) is not supported yet.LangFactscolumn, attributeRegistersTests, set on the Rust row. Shared code reads the column rather than comparing againstLang::Rust, so the== Lang::ratchet inlangidentitycheckdoes not rise.registersItself, so they cannot disagree about a symbol. The exemption counts towardregister-macro-excluded=.forEachSymbolBodykeeps its three-argument visitor for every existing caller.forEachSymbolFileis the whole-file variant thatregisteredMacroSymbolIdsuses.Cache scheme
The dead set changed for Rust test code, so a cached quality snapshot changed meaning. Main took v25 (#496,
isTestPath), so this PR is v26 (kQSnapCacheScheme = 26; main's v25 note is kept). The companion PR #500 takes v27, so the two never share a value.registersItself, rustTestAttributed,isRustTestAttributeandrustCodeOfAttributeLineare on the tripwire manifest, andtest/qschemetrip.hashis re-pinned, with the log entry inqschemetripcheck.sh(25 → 26).Open PRs #420, #427 and #429 also touch
test/qschemetripcheck.sh. If one of them lands first, this PR renumbers and re-pins.Tests

Negative lookalikes must still be flagged:#[testing],#[tested], a commented// #[test],static X: u32 = 1; // used to be #[test],const A: u32 = 1; #[test], a dead fn after a test item, and an ordinary dead fn.
