Closes #123.

Occupied directories now offer safe actions:

  • Create an available name (the default), choose another name, or cancel.
  • Add Prisma to an existing app through prisma@latest orm init. No starter or deployment is run; Prisma controls its own prompts and overwrite consent.
  • Existing Prisma projects cannot select Add Prisma. Non-interactive/JSON collisions still fail without writes; the --force migration guard remains unchanged.

The default name skips occupied paths. ORM initialization has separate result and telemetry outcomes, so it does not count as a new starter or deployment. Structured error diagnostics from partially completed Prisma commands retain their actual cause.

CLI dependencies are updated, including Effect 4.0.1 and its stable effect/cli API. The Node minimum is corrected to 22.22, which the existing PostHog SDK already required. Generated templates and dependency pins are unchanged.

Verification:

  • 98 unit tests, typecheck, modified-file lint/formatting, build and pin checks passed.
  • Real terminal: created a free-name starter with contract artifacts and an initial migration; existing app files stayed unchanged. Native ORM prompts and cancellation checked. Recorded with Termcut locally.
  • JSON collision checked with the built CLI. The explicit-force/migration-preservation e2e test passed.

Do not merge yet: the released Prisma CLI's native init fails in the reproduced fresh Bun install because of duplicated ArkType instances. Linked fix: prisma/prisma-cli#332. Add Prisma needs the coordinated engine/ORM release and a fresh registry end-to-end retest. No template workaround is included.

A non-empty target directory only ever said "Use --force to continue",
which is the wrong advice for someone adding Prisma to an existing app.

- Inspect the directory and lead with the matching step: prisma orm init
for an existing app, the Prisma CLI or --force for a Prisma project, a
  different name otherwise.
- Check the directory right after the name prompt and ask again in
interactive runs instead of exiting after the template prompt.
- Report a coarse target-directory-kind on the failure event so the
  cases can be told apart.

Closes #123

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • When a project name points to a non-empty directory, interactive setup can suggest an available name, let you choose another name, or cancel. Existing apps can also initialize Prisma in place without changing existing files.
    • Existing apps receive package-manager-specific prisma orm init guidance, with provider-specific documentation links where available. Other non-empty directories receive tailored guidance.
  • Improvements

    • The default project name skips occupied paths. With --yes, --json, or non-interactive use, directory conflicts exit without modifying the directory.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified --force behavior, directory categories reported in rejection telemetry, and the Node.js 22.22 minimum requirement.

Walkthrough

The create flow classifies non-empty target directories as existing apps, Prisma projects, or other directories. It resolves the target before template selection and provides category-specific guidance and interactive conflict choices. For an existing app, users can select Prisma ORM initialization, which runs in the target directory and returns an initialization result. Telemetry records operation-specific events and the target category for failed creates.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to f09b7

No verified current-head issue remains. The reported Bun initialization failure could not be matched to the Prisma version this change runs, so its impact on this feature remains unconfirmed.

Run official ORM init for an explicitly selected existing app; keep its results and telemetry separate from generated starters. Update CLI-only dependencies to Effect 4.0.1 and current releases. Templates and their pins stay unchanged. Registry init remains blocked on prisma/prisma-cli#332.

Comment thread src/tasks/prisma-setup/commands.ts
Run `orm init` through PRISMA_PLATFORM_CLI_PACKAGE instead of the floating
`prisma@latest` tag, so the pin check and the release bump decide which Prisma
version adds the ORM to an existing app, matching the starters.
