Summary

Steps 6 and 7 of the federator restructure (#640). FederateQuery now plans provider operations from the normalized operation added in #670, runs them in parallel, and merges their responses. The graphql-go mapper, builder, argument handler and accumulator are deleted, and github.com/graphql-go/graphql is no longer a dependency.

The old pipeline ignored aliases, fragments and @skip/@include. It attached mapped arguments to every field along the target path, sent list containers to the PDP, treated provider HTTP errors as successes, and dropped failed fields from the response silently. All of those are fixed here, as listed in #668.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • Documentation update
  • Refactoring (no functional changes)
  • Performance improvement
  • Other (please describe): consumers see intentional behaviour changes (aliases, ambiguous IDs, provider failures); see Additional Notes.

Changes Made

Plan (internal/oe/federator/plan.go)

  • One provider operation per provider, schema and set of mapped argument values. Each is a gqlparser ast.QueryDocument, printed with gqlparser's formatter and named Query<providerKey> as before.
  • A mapped argument is attached only at its targetArgPath. Its value is bound (Operation.BindArguments) from the consumer field that carries it or an ancestor, so each alias gets its own value.
  • Only selected leaf fields are fetched, sent to the PDP and audited as RequestedFields. List containers are not.
  • A list field's item fields are read relative to the list's providerField, either by their full path or by their last segment, as before.
  • Argument values are printed using the consumer argument's type: enums as enums, and whole JSON numbers for Int as Int.
  • Introspection fields are rejected. __typename isn't fetched; merge answers it.

Execute (execute.go)

  • Runs the fetches concurrently and returns one result per fetch. Each provider call is audited as before.
  • A provider that isn't configured is a failed fetch.

Merge (merge.go)

  • A pure function of the operation, the plan and the fetch results; it doesn't depend on how the results were fetched.
  • Values are placed by response key, so aliases are honoured.
  • A field served by a failed fetch is null, with a PROVIDER_ERROR at its path.
  • A null in a non-null field propagates to the nearest nullable parent, as the spec's value completion does. Error paths include list indexes.
  • Errors in provider responses are passed on, prefixed with the provider key, at the first consumer field whose provider path overlaps the error's path.

FederateQuery (federator.go, access.go)

  • Parse, validate, operation.Build, data-owner ID, plan, PDP and consent, execute, merge.
  • The data-owner ID comes from Operation.DataOwnerID and is checked before the PDP call.
  • Errors from operation.Build are reported as follows:
    • variable errors as BAD_REQUEST with locations;
    • ErrUnsupportedOperation with the existing Only query operation is supported message;
    • anything else as BAD_REQUEST.

Provider client

  • Provider.Execute returns an error for a non-2xx HTTP status, whatever the body.

Removed

  • mapper.go, arghandler.go, builder.go, accumulator.go and their tests, and federator_test.go, which only tested them.
  • schema.CompiledSchema.Document and parseDocument, and the second graphql-go parse in FederateQuery.
  • github.com/graphql-go/graphql from go.mod and go.sum (go mod tidy). No CI check guards against it coming back: a new dependency shows up in review through the go.mod diff.

Error code

  • New PROVIDER_ERROR in internal/oe/internals/errors.

Docs

  • cmd/oe/CONFIGURATION.md:
    • the foundationalIdArgName, sourceArgPath and targetArgPath rules;
    • list item fields;
    • a new Queries section on what's supported;
    • PROVIDER_ERROR, and partial responses with null propagation.
  • README.md, HOW_TO_TEST.md and PROVIDER_CONFIGURATION.md are updated to match.

Testing

  • I have tested this change locally
  • I have added unit tests for new functionality
  • I have tested edge cases
  • All existing tests pass

go test -race ./internal/oe/... ./cmd/oe/... passes. go list -deps ./cmd/oe ./internal/oe/... lists no github.com/graphql-go/... package. Coverage: federator 88.7%, federator/operation 89.7%.

Golden files. Only the four listed in #668 change:

  • conflicting_data_owner_ids_via_aliases: AMBIGUOUS_IDENTIFIER, and the PDP and providers aren't called.
  • array_field and all_providers:
    • ownerNic is only on getVehicleInfos, not on vehicle;
    • vehicle.getVehicleInfos.data is no longer sent to the PDP.
  • provider_failure: birthInfo: {date: null}, with a PROVIDER_ERROR at ["personInfo","birthInfo","date"].

Provider query text is otherwise unchanged once whitespace is normalized, which is how the golden harness compares it.

New golden cases

  • aliases: response keys, nested aliases, and one DRP fetch shared by two aliases with the same nic.
  • fragments_skip_include: a named fragment, an inline fragment, @skip and @include with a variable. A skipped field is neither fetched nor sent to the PDP.
  • provider_error_status_with_json_body: a 503 with a GraphQL body is a failure, and its data is ignored.
  • provider_graphql_errors: a provider error is passed on at the consumer field's path.

New unit tests

  • TestBuildPlan:
    • one operation per provider, with arguments only at their target path;
    • list item fields by full path and by last segment;
    • leaves only in requiredFields;
    • a fetch shared by aliases with the same arguments, and split fetches for different values;
    • enum and Int printing of variables and defaults;
    • __typename and fields without @sourceInfo;
    • introspection rejected.
  • TestAstValue: every value kind, with string escaping and sorted object keys.
  • TestMerge, which passes fetch results in directly:
    • aliases, list items and __typename;
    • a failed fetch;
    • null propagation through String! and [Vehicle!] to the nullable list, with list indexes in the error path;
    • a non-null root field nulling data;
    • a provider value that isn't a list;
    • provider errors with and without a matching path;
    • missing provider fields.
  • TestProvider_Execute: a non-2xx status with a JSON body is an error.
  • federator_internal_test.go: RequestedFields lists leaves only, and a failed fetch reports its field as null with an error.

The Docker integration suite (tests/integration) hasn't been run on this branch.

How to test

  1. go test -race ./internal/oe/... ./cmd/oe/...
  2. go test ./internal/oe/federator -run TestFederateQueryGolden -update, then git status. No golden file should change.
  3. go mod tidy, then git diff go.mod. graphql-go stays out.
  4. With the local stack (dev/README.md) and a consumer token, send a query that uses fragments, aliases and @skip/@include:
    curl -s -X POST http://localhost:4000/public/graphql \
      -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
      -d @- <<'EOF' | jq
    {
      "query": "query Person($nic: String!, $withBirth: Boolean!, $skipAddress: Boolean = true) { citizen: personInfo(nic: $nic) { ...identity home: address @skip(if: $skipAddress) ... on PersonInfo { profession } birthInfo @include(if: $withBirth) { place: birthPlace district } } } fragment identity on PersonInfo { fullName sex dateOfBirth }",
      "variables": { "nic": "748213", "withBirth": true }
    }
    EOF
    Expect data.citizen with fullName, sex, dateOfBirth, profession and birthInfo { place district }, and no home.
  5. Add other: personInfo(nic: "512346") { fullName } to the same query. Expect AMBIGUOUS_IDENTIFIER.
  6. Stop one mock provider and repeat step 4. Expect its fields as null, each with a PROVIDER_ERROR at its path, and the other provider's fields filled in.

Additional Notes

Behaviour changes consumers can see:

  • Aliases are honoured. The response uses the query's aliases, and aliased fields are fetched separately when their mapped arguments differ.
  • Conflicting data-owner IDs are rejected with AMBIGUOUS_IDENTIFIER, aliases included, before the PDP is called. Before, only the first value was used.
  • Fragments and @skip/@include work. Fields in fragments are fetched and authorized. Skipped fields are neither fetched nor sent to the PDP.
  • The PDP sees only selected leaf fields. List containers such as vehicle.getVehicleInfos.data are no longer sent, so they need no policy metadata.
  • Provider failures are explicit:
    • before, a failed provider's fields were missing from data;
    • now they're null, with a PROVIDER_ERROR at each field's path;
    • a non-2xx status counts as a failure, and so does a provider that isn't configured;
    • a null in a non-null field propagates to its parent, as in the spec.
  • Introspection, selections on interface or union fields, and selections on list fields without @sourceInfo are rejected with BAD_REQUEST.

Known limits, addressed in #669: argument values are still inlined into provider queries. gqlparser's formatter quotes strings Go-style, so an unusual control character in a value (for example a bell character) would print as \x07, which isn't valid GraphQL. Typical identifiers aren't affected; forwarding variables removes this.

The internal plan/execute/merge split keeps merge independent of how results arrive, so an asynchronous executor could be added without changing it.

Deployment Notes

No configuration changes. Check before deploying:

  • Policy metadata: list containers are no longer sent to the PDP, so their metadata becomes unused. Each selected leaf field still needs metadata, as before.
  • Consumers: check any that relied on a failed provider's fields being absent rather than null, or on queries with conflicting nic values succeeding.

…ove graphql-go

Steps 6 and 7 of openndx#640. FederateQuery now plans provider operations from
the normalized operation (openndx#667), runs them in parallel and merges their
responses, and the graphql-go mapper, builder, argument handler and
accumulator are deleted.

- plan.go builds one provider operation per provider, schema and set of
  mapped argument values, as a gqlparser AST printed with its formatter.
  Each mapped argument is attached only at its targetArgPath, with the
  value bound from the consumer field that carries it or an ancestor.
  Only selected leaf fields are fetched and sent to the PDP; list
  containers are not.
- execute.go runs the fetches concurrently and audits each one.
- merge.go is a pure function of the operation, the plan and the fetch
  results. Values are placed by response key, so aliases are honoured.
  A field served by a failed fetch is null with a PROVIDER_ERROR at its
  path, a null in a non-null field propagates to the nearest nullable
  parent, provider errors are passed on, and __typename is answered.
- The data-owner ID is read from every field with Operation.DataOwnerID,
  before the PDP is called, so conflicting values under aliases are
  rejected with AMBIGUOUS_IDENTIFIER.
- Provider.Execute treats a non-2xx HTTP status as a failure.
- Remove schema.CompiledSchema.Document and the second graphql-go parse
  of each query, and drop github.com/graphql-go/graphql from go.mod. The
  OE validate workflow fails if go.mod lists it again.
- Introspection and selections on interface or union fields are
  rejected with BAD_REQUEST.

Golden files change for conflicting_data_owner_ids_via_aliases,
array_field, all_providers and provider_failure, as listed in openndx#668. New
golden cases cover aliases, fragments with @skip/@include, a non-2xx
provider status with a JSON body, and provider GraphQL errors.

Closes openndx#668.

📝 Walkthrough

The OE now plans provider queries from normalized GraphQL operations, executes provider fetches, and merges results by consumer response key. Provider failures produce path-specific errors and null fields. The change also removes the legacy graphql-go federation implementation.

Changes: Federated query planning and response handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Normalize, plan, and authorize queries
internal/oe/federator/federator.go, internal/oe/federator/access.go, internal/oe/federator/plan.go, internal/oe/federator/plan_test.go, cmd/oe/CONFIGURATION.md, cmd/oe/PROVIDER_CONFIGURATION.md, cmd/oe/README.md, internal/oe/federator/testdata/golden/*
FederateQuery uses a normalized operation to resolve the data-owner ID, build provider fetches, and authorize planned required fields. The planner handles aliases, mapped arguments, selected fields, and provider query generation. Documentation and golden fixtures describe or verify these behaviors.
Execute fetches and merge responses
internal/oe/federator/execute.go, internal/oe/federator/merge.go, internal/oe/federator/merge_test.go, internal/oe/provider/*, internal/oe/internals/errors/codes.go, internal/oe/federator/golden_test.go, internal/oe/federator/testdata/golden/*, cmd/oe/HOW_TO_TEST.md, cmd/oe/README.md, internal/oe/federator/federator_internal_test.go
Provider fetches run concurrently and are audited. The merger maps results and provider errors to consumer paths, and applies GraphQL null propagation. Provider execution rejects non-2xx statuses. Tests and documentation cover provider failures, partial results, and error paths.
Remove legacy graphql-go federation path
internal/oe/federator/accumulator.go, internal/oe/federator/arghandler.go, internal/oe/federator/builder.go, internal/oe/federator/mapper.go, internal/oe/federator/*_test.go, internal/oe/federator/schema/*, internal/oe/federator/test_helpers_test.go, go.mod
The previous federation mapping, query-building, argument-handling, and response-accumulation code and related tests are removed. Compiled schemas no longer store a graphql-go document, and the direct graphql-go dependency is removed.

The new federation flow is broadly consistent with its stated goals. Two narrow issues remain. A schema that declares a list object field without @sourceInfo can return a response with the wrong shape and no error. One troubleshooting table also still describes the old omitted-field behavior for provider failures. Both fixes are small, and the change is mergeable with these follow-ups addressed.

Update the troubleshooting row for failed provider calls.

This row still says that a failed provider call omits its fields and returns no error. This PR changes that behavior. merge now returns each field of a failed fetch as null, with a PROVIDER_ERROR at the field's path. CONFIGURATION.md, README.md and HOW_TO_TEST.md already describe the new behavior. An operator who uses this table will look for missing fields and miss the PROVIDER_ERROR entries.

📝 Proposed fix
-| Field missing from the result, no error | The provider call failed, so its fields are omitted. Check the OE log and the provider's URL and credentials. |

Address review comments on openndx#671:

- A list field with a selection but no @sourceinfo has no provider list
  to read its items from, and merge built it as an object. Planning now
  fails, so FederateQuery returns BAD_REQUEST.
- PROVIDER_CONFIGURATION.md's troubleshooting table still said a failed
  provider's fields are omitted. They're null with a PROVIDER_ERROR at

Addressed the outside-diff comment on cmd/oe/PROVIDER_CONFIGURATION.md:86 in 1874ea5: the troubleshooting row now says a failed provider call returns its fields as null with a PROVIDER_ERROR at each field's path, and lists the causes (unreachable or unconfigured provider, non-2xx status, non-GraphQL body).
