feat(run-spaceapp): support rootless Podman as a container engine (#63) - #324
Many Linux developers and enterprise environments (Fedora, RHEL, CentOS Stream, Debian, Ubuntu, and Arch-family distributions) run rootless Podman (podman + podman compose) instead of a rootful Docker daemon so container engines do not require root privileges on the host. Previously, run-spaceapp hardcoded docker across CLI execution, readiness checks, storage inspection, and workspace permission hints.
Add podmanCliAndComposeAreAvailable, podmanIsReady, detectContainerEngine, and rootless Podman verification in ensureDockerAvailable when podman is selected (--engine podman or SPACEAPP_CONTAINER_ENGINE=podman) or when Docker is absent.
Storage plan inspection (packages/run-spaceapp/src/storage.mjs):
Inspect images and host resources using the active engine (podman or docker), supporting rootless Podman info --format {{json .}} fields (host.arch, host.cpus, host.memTotal, and store.graphRoot).
CLI lifecycle, workspace hints & doctor diagnostics (packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs):
Add podman to trustedCommands and spawnTrustedCommand (shell: false), and accept --engine <auto|docker|podman> (or SPACEAPP_CONTAINER_ENGINE).
Route lifecycle commands (up, down, status, logs, doctor, backup, restore, update, uninstall) through the configured or selected container engine.
Print rootless podman unshare chown -R 10001:10001 instructions instead of sudo setfacl when adding writable workspaces under Podman on Linux.
Tests, CI & Documentation:
Add unit and lifecycle test suite in packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman.test.mjs.
Add podman-rootless CI job on ubuntu-latest in .github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml.
Document rootless Podman usage and workspace UID mapping in packages/run-spaceapp/README.md and docs/getting-started.md.
Verification
Relevant automated tests pass (npm test -w run-spaceapp, node --test packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman.test.mjs, npm run check -w run-spaceapp, npm run pack:dry-run -w run-spaceapp).
Linux, macOS, and/or Windows coverage is listed (Linux rootless Podman + existing cross-platform Docker matrix).
UI changes include real browser console/network evidence (N/A — CLI launcher change only).
Every commit has a Signed-off-by: line (Developer Certificate of Origin 1.1), and the contribution is licensed under the MIT License (see CONTRIBUTING.md).
No credentials, tokens, personal memory, customer data, private paths, or runtime state are included.
Documentation and changelog are updated when behavior changes (packages/run-spaceapp/README.md, docs/getting-started.md).
Security, migration, resource, and rollback effects are described:
Security: podman is added to the explicit trustedCommands allowlist and spawned with shell: false; rootless Podman avoids rootful daemon privileges and uses podman unshare chown instead of sudo for bind-mounted workspaces.
Migration & Rollback: containerEngine is optional in config.json and defaults to "docker", preserving backward compatibility for all existing installations and checkpoints.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for rootless Podman as a container engine on Linux, with automatic detection or explicit selection. The chosen engine is saved in configuration and used for container operations.
Added Podman readiness checks and engine-specific guidance for making workspaces writable.
Documentation
Updated the Linux setup guides with Podman installation, engine selection, and workspace permission instructions.
The launcher adds Docker and Podman engine selection, persists explicit choices, checks rootless Podman readiness, routes commands and storage inspection through the selected engine, and adds Linux guidance and CI coverage.
Configuration accepts Docker or Podman. Engine detection checks Docker and Podman availability, and the Linux Podman path checks CLI, Compose, and rootless engine readiness. Tests cover selection and readiness. The docs describe engine selection and workspace ownership setup; CI adds an Ubuntu Podman job.
CLI routing and workspace guidance packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/src/index.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman.test.mjs
The CLI accepts --engine and routes lifecycle commands through the selected engine. Podman Compose commands and rootless workspace ownership guidance are covered by tests.
Storage inspection uses the selected engine. It reads architecture, CPU, and memory from host metadata when the top-level values are absent, and uses Podman’s graph root on Linux.

The core flow of this change, selecting Podman at install, does not work through the CLI flag, and an engine override can redirect lifecycle commands away from the installed runtime. SELinux-enforcing Podman hosts can still hit workspace permission errors. Fix these before merging.

Explanation
The supplied change set maps to #63. Changed areas are: engine resolution and config schema in src/index.mjs; Podman detection and prerequisites in src/prerequisites.mjs; storage probes in src/storage.mjs; CLI engine option, trusted command allowlist, runtime routing, and workspace hints in src/cli.mjs; unit tests in tests/podman.test.mjs; CI job in .github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml; and docs in the launcher README and docs/getting-started.md. Each area supports Podman engine support or its tests and docs. The read portion of cli.mjs shows only Podman-related additions. The rest of cli.mjs was truncated. The workflow and some other diffs could not be read, so this result relies on the AI-generated summaries for those files. No unrelated change is shown.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Scope: the only directly linked issue is #63 (open). Its coding requirements are assessed below.
Implemented, based on the PR summary and the read portion of packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs at head:
[#63 engine selection] --engine and SPACEAPP_CONTAINER_ENGINE are parsed. resolveContainerEngine selects the engine. containerEngine is persisted in config.json.
[#63 compose] composeCommand returns docker or podman as the executable. The CLI maps docker to podman for runtime commands when Podman is active. podman is in trustedCommands and is spawned with shell: false.
[#63 Linux readiness] detectContainerEngine, podmanIsReady, and podmanCliAndComposeAreAvailable exist. The Linux Podman path runs podman info.
[#63 storage] inspectStoragePlan uses the Podman host.* and store.graphRoot fields.
[#63 workspaces] podmanUnshareChownArgs returns UID mapping arguments for 10001:10001.
[#63 tests and docs] tests/podman.test.mjs covers unit behavior. README and getting-started docs describe Podman use.
Unmet or unevidenced coding requirements:
[#63 CI] Not met. The podman-rootless job runs tests/podman.test.mjs and the workspace check. It does not run install --engine podman --profile small --non-interactive, wait for /readyz, run backup, or run uninstall --purge-data. The workflow diff could not be read. This finding relies on the AI-generated workflow summary.
[#63 macOS] Not met. The Podman prerequisite path is described as Linux-only. No Podman machine path, CPU/memory/disk check for the small profile, or resize guidance is shown.
[#63 doctor and support-bundle] Not met as shown. Doctor probes the Podman CLI, Compose, and Engine. No evidence shows reporting of rootful or rootless state, cgroup version, or whether CPU/memory limits are delegated. No support-bundle engine facts are shown.
[#63 data safety] Unevidenced. The read portion of cli.mjs does not show a refusal when the requested engine differs from config.containerEngine on an existing installation. The cli.mjs read was truncated at 16000 bytes.
[#63 --access host-root] Unevidenced. No refusal of --access host-root on Podman appears in the supplied evidence.
[#63 compose] Unevidenced. No minimum Podman or compose-provider version is stated in the evidence. templates/compose.yml is not changed in the summary, so the template features rely on the existing file.
Present implementation covers part of the requirements. Items 1 to 3 are concrete gaps in the supplied evidence.
Resolution
Add the missing coding work for #63, then re-run this assessment:
Extend the podman-rootless CI job to run install --engine podman --profile small --non-interactive, poll /readyz until ready, run backup, and run uninstall --purge-data. Confirm that no containers remain running.
Add a macOS Podman machine path in the prerequisite and install flow. Check CPU, memory, and disk against the selected profile. Print resize instructions when a check fails. Add unit tests for this path.
Extend doctor to report the engine version, rootful or rootless mode, cgroup version, and whether CPU and memory limits are delegated. When a limit cannot be applied, report it clearly. Add the same facts to support-bundle without secrets. Add tests.
Refuse an engine switch on an existing installation when the requested engine differs from config.containerEngine. Print a clear message. Add a test. Alternatively, document and test a backup and restore migration path.
Refuse --access host-root when the engine is Podman. Print a clear message. Add a test.
State the supported Podman and compose-provider minimum versions in the README and docs/getting-started.md. Confirm the template features by running the Podman lifecycle test.

Assert the rootless probe result.
This command exits successfully when Podman reports false, so the job can pass its “Verify rootless Podman” step without a rootless engine. Compare the output with true and fail the step otherwise. (docs.podman.io)

Pass the selected engine into installation.
For install --engine podman, this parser removes the flag, but run does not pass globalFlags.engine to installCommand. Installation therefore uses the Docker prerequisite path and does not persist Podman. An unflagged install on a Podman-only host also never calls detectContainerEngine. Resolve the engine during install and pass it through prerequisite checks, prepareInstallation, and staged Compose commands. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Refuse runtime engine overrides that differ from the saved engine.
When an installation has saved Docker, --engine podman redirects its lifecycle commands to a different engine without changing or checking the installation. The reverse override has the same problem. Commands such as down and uninstall --purge-data can then operate on a different engine while leaving the installed runtime untouched. Compare an explicit selection with the saved engine and reject a switch rather than redirecting commands. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Account for SELinux labels in Podman workspace guidance.
On an SELinux-enforcing host, changing UID/GID ownership alone does not make a bind mount accessible to a container. The workspace Compose renderer emits these mounts without a relabel option, so a user can follow this new command and still receive permission errors. Add a Podman-compatible shared label strategy to the generated mounts, and explain it alongside the ownership guidance. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Shell-quote the printed workspace path.
JSON.stringify produces double quotes, which do not prevent shell command substitution. If a workspace path contains $(...) or backticks and the user copies this printed command, the shell executes that text. Use POSIX shell quoting for the displayed path instead of JSON quoting. doctor ignores --engine and reads process.env rather than the env passed to run. Reject host-root access with Podman.
validateConfig accepts containerEngine: "podman" with accessMode: "host-root". The launcher can therefore save a configuration that requests the unsupported Podman access mode.
