  • NIT: tests/test_auth_broker.py:77 test_create_accepts_allowlisted_hosts now tests the per-kind cap (correct behavior) but the test name doesn't reflect this; consider renaming for clarity

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Sign-in requests are now limited to one open request per agent and request type. Submitting another request of the same type while one is pending returns a 409 response and does not send a notification.
    • A new request can be submitted after the earlier one expires. Other agents can still submit requests independently.

- Add open_request method to AuthBrokerStore returning the newest pending or
code_ready request for a requester+kind that is not expired
- In create_request route, check for existing open request before creating; return
409 with detail 'a sign-in request is already open for this agent' and raise no
  notification when one exists
- Update tests to verify the new behavior
- Update docs/agent-coordination.md to reflect the new limit

Walkthrough

The sign-in broker now rejects a second open request for the same agent and kind with HTTP 409. The store checks request status and expiry. Tests and documentation cover duplicate requests, expired requests, and requests from different agents.

Changes: Sign-in request uniqueness

Layer / File(s) Summary
Find and reject duplicate requests
tinyagentos/auth_broker.py, tinyagentos/routes/auth_broker.py
The store finds the newest unexpired pending or code-ready request for an agent and kind. The route checks for an existing request before resolving recipients or creating another request.
Verify and document duplicate request behavior
tests/test_auth_broker.py, docs/agent-coordination.md, changelog.d/tsk-4bw2ew-signin-broker-cap.md
Tests cover duplicate rejection, expiry, separate agents, and notification counts. The documentation and changelog describe the duplicate-request response.

The one-open-request-per-kind rule can be bypassed by near-simultaneous requests from the same agent, and the documentation describes "open" more broadly than the check enforces. Both are bounded, so the change is mergeable, but the owner should fix the race and the documentation.

Count code_read as open, or change the doc to match the 409 check.

The doc defines an open request as non-completed and non-expired. That definition includes code_read. The 409 check does not. After the agent reads the code, the request is code_read. It stays non-completed until its expiry, and complete moves it to completed. The route calls open_request, which accepts only pending and code_ready. A second create for the same kind therefore succeeds after the code is read. This contradicts the documented 409 rule. The doc should name the statuses that the check uses.

Move the duplicate check into the locked create path.

The lookup in create_request runs outside the store lock. Two requests from the same requester for the same kind can both receive None from open_request before either insert commits. The route then awaits resolve_agent_owner and store.create, and each database call yields to the event loop, so the second lookup can run before the first insert commits. The window is narrow and requires two concurrent requests for the same agent and kind.

AuthBrokerStore.create takes self._lock before its cap check and insert, so the cap check and the insert are serialized. The cap, however, limits only the total number of open requests (three). create does not reject a second open request of the same kind. Both creates can succeed and send two sign-in notifications, which breaks the one-open-request-per-kind rule.

Check for an open request with the same requester and kind inside create, under self._lock. Use the same status and expiry rules as open_request. Raise a duplicate error there, and map it to HTTP 409 with the existing detail text in create_request. Keep the early lookup before create as an optional fast path.

Lead review (@taOS-dev): code in tinyagentos/auth_broker.py and routes/auth_broker.py is correct (open_request picks the newest pending/code_ready row and only checks expiry on it, which is safe because expiry is fixed from created_at; the store cap of 3 still bounds the check-then-create race). Two follow-ups before merge, carded as fix-forward tsk-pxwdmj:

  1. test_create_accepts_allowlisted_hosts no longer proves console.anthropic.com is accepted (the second create now expects 409). Create it as a different agent and assert 200.
  2. docs/agent-coordination.md dropped the 429 sentence, but the store cap is still reachable: code_read rows do not trip the new 409 yet still count toward MAX_OPEN_PER_AGENT=3, and the route still maps PendingCapExceeded to 429.

needs-jay stays (security path, no automerge).
