Tab: Appearance

The Appearance tab controls how pawns in this faction look - their hair, beards, hair color, and body type.

This tab is only available for humanoid pawns. Animals and mechanoids don't have this tab.

Appearance tab

How It Works

By default, all appearance options are turned off and RimWorld picks randomly from whatever is available. Enable any option to restrict or force specific choices.

These settings are additive with the Global edit: if the Global edit restricts hair colors, a specific pawn kind edit can further restrict (or override) that.

Forced Beard Styles

Choose which beard styles are allowed for male pawns in this pawn type. Only the beards you select can appear.

  • Click beards to select or deselect them.
  • A visual grid shows beard previews.
  • Leave this override off to allow all beards.

This only affects pawns that can grow beards. Female pawns and non-humanoid species ignore this setting.

Forced Hair Styles

Choose which hairstyles are allowed for pawns of this type.

  • A visual grid shows hair previews (4 columns).
  • Click to select or deselect individual hairstyles.
  • Leave this override off to allow all hairstyles.

If only one hairstyle is selected, every pawn of this type will have that exact hairstyle. This is useful for making a visually distinctive faction.

Forced Hair Colors

Restrict or force specific hair colors.

  • Click Add Color to add an allowed color.
  • Use the color picker to select the exact color.
  • All colors you add form the pool - RimWorld picks randomly from this pool.
  • If only one color is added, every pawn gets that color.
  • Leave this override off to use RimWorld's normal hair color randomization.

Allowed Body Types

Control which body types can appear for this pawn kind.

If you choose this override you must select all the body types you want. Be aware if you pick forced apparel for a body type that can't handle it, Rimworld will likely spawn them nude.

Tips

  • Making a uniform-looking faction: Enable hair, beard, and color overrides and set each to a single option. Every pawn will look consistent.
  • Visual variety within a theme: Select a subset of options (e.g., only dark hair colors, only short hairstyles) to create a themed look without making every pawn identical.
  • Appearance + Apparel together: Combine with the Apparel tab to create a fully unified faction aesthetic.
