Tab Apparel

Tab: Apparel

The Apparel tab controls what clothing and armor pawns of this type wear. You can force specific items, restrict categories, set spending budgets, or make them spawn completely naked.

This tab is only available for humanoid pawns.

Apparel tab

Force Naked

When this toggle is on, pawns spawn with no clothing at all. All other apparel settings are ignored.

Use this for wild men, cultists, or any faction concept that involves unclothed pawns.

Force Only Selected

When this toggle is on, pawns only wear items from your Required Apparel list. RimWorld won't fill in any additional random apparel.

Leave this off if you want to force some items (like a helmet) while still letting RimWorld pick the rest of the outfit randomly.

Apparel Value

Set a spending budget for apparel. RimWorld uses this budget when randomly filling out a pawn's clothing (when you haven't forced specific items).

  • Min: The minimum amount to spend.
  • Max: The maximum amount to spend.

Leave this override off to use the pawn kind's normal budget.

Allowed Apparel Types

Choose which categories of apparel can appear on this pawn. This uses a tag-based system:

  • Tags represent groups like "shields", "heavy armor", "light armor", "headwear", etc.
  • Only apparel matching the selected tags can appear.

Disallowed Apparel Types

The opposite of Allowed - choose categories that cannot appear. Any item matching a disallowed tag is excluded even if it would otherwise be picked.

Apparel Color

Tint all apparel on this pawn with a specific color.

  • Click to enable the override and open the color picker.
  • All clothing and armor the pawn wears will be tinted this color.

Required Apparel (Simple)

A list of apparel items that are guaranteed to appear on every pawn of this type. RimWorld picks a random quality and material unless you use the Advanced section.

  • Click Add to open an item picker and select an item.
  • Each item in the list spawns on the pawn.

Required Apparel (Advanced)

The advanced list lets you specify exact material, quality, and style for each forced item. Each entry is a "spec requirement" with these options:

Option What It Does
Item Which apparel to force
Material Force a specific material (e.g., plasteel, devilstrand)
Color Force a specific Color
Quality Force a specific quality (Awful → Legendary)
Style Force a specific ideology style (if Ideology DLC is active)
Selection Mode How to pick when multiple options are listed

Selection modes:

  • Always Picked - Every item with this mode is always given to these pawns.
  • Random Chance to be picked - Lets you set a percentage chance for this item.
  • Pool X - Exactly 1 item picked from each non-empty pool, see Pools.

Apparel Blacklist

A list of specific apparel items that can never appear on this pawn, even if they would otherwise be randomly selected.

  • Click Add to add an item to the blacklist.
  • Useful for removing one or two specific items without restricting entire categories.

Tips

  • Forcing a full outfit: Enable Force Only Selected, then add all desired items to Required Apparel (Advanced) with your preferred quality. The pawn spawns with exactly those items and nothing else.
  • Preventing specific conflicts: Use the blacklist to remove items that clip with each other visually or that conflict with your intent.
  • Faction uniform with randomness: Add a forced helmet in Required Apparel but leave the rest unconfigured. Pawns will have your helmet plus random body armor.
  • Budget matters most when not forcing items: If you're not using Required Apparel, raising the Apparel Value cap lets RimWorld pick higher-quality random gear.

See Pawn Kind Edits for how the override system works in general.
