What did you change?

The README opened on the Zenodo community and the first code block a reader met was a Speech2Text call with nine decoding arguments. The models are on the Hub — 671 of them, 624 carrying a pipeline_tag as of 2026-09-21 — so the page now opens there and shows the shortest thing that works.

Structure: hero → install → quick start → find a model → download and cache → use in a recipe → publish. Quick start is the minimal ASR, TTS and separation calls; the decoding arguments, the segment-wise options and the pre-0.10.1 API move into <details>. The Hub screenshots and the Zenodo route fold away too. Nothing is deleted — 319 lines, 189 of them outside a details block.

A new MAINTAINING.md takes the three Hub-curation tools. hub_meta_yaml, hub_pipeline_tags and hub_usage_snippets all need write access to the organization to do anything, so they are not README material — and none of them was documented anywhere before. With the room, that file also says what they cannot fix: a config naming a bpemodel the repository does not hold, a dangling checkpoint symlink, or an old config that will not build against current espnet at all.

What stays in the README is the one part of that story a plain user meets: the RuntimeError a hand-uploaded repository raises, and passing train_config and model_file yourself.

Three errors, each checked against the code

was is

An upgrade notice

Releases before 0.1.11 resolved paths through every string in a packed config, including the vocabulary. OWSM's vocabulary contains . and exp, so those tokens were rewritten into absolute cache paths and came back in transcripts (fixed in ca0a6ad). 0.1.11 stops doing it and repairs an already damaged cache on load, with no re-download. That is worth telling people at the top of the page.

Why did you make this change?

Someone arriving at this repository wants to load a model. The page they landed on started with a Zenodo community link and a nine-argument decoding call, and never mentioned that 671 models are one from_pretrained away.

Is your PR small enough?

Yes. Two files, documentation only.

Additional Context

All relative links in both files resolve against the tree; <details> tags balance 4/4. The 671/624 figures come from the Hub API on 2026-09-21.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The first code block a reader met was a Speech2Text call with nine
decoding arguments, and the page opened on the Zenodo community, which
is obsolete. The models are on the Hub - 671 of them, 624 with a
pipeline_tag as of 2026-09-21 - so the page now opens there.

Structure: hero, install, quick start, find, download, use in a recipe,
publish. Quick start is the minimal ASR, TTS and separation calls;
the decoding arguments, the segment-wise options and the pre-0.10.1 API
move into details blocks. The Hub screenshots and the Zenodo route fold
away too. Nothing is deleted.

Three errors, each checked against the code:

- the upload command was written `espnet_zenodo_upload`; setup.py's
console_scripts defines `espnet_model_zoo_upload` and nothing else
- "you need to give a `huggingface_id`model` or a tag ," had lost a
backtick and could not be read
- "For old ESPnet (<=10.1)" is 0.10.1

Added an upgrade notice for the vocabulary corruption fixed in 0.1.11
(ca0a6ad): before it, _resolve_paths rewrote any config string naming
something in the cache, and OWSM's vocabulary contains "." and "exp", so
cache paths came back in transcripts. 0.1.11 repairs an already damaged
cache on load.

The three Hub-curation tools move to a new MAINTAINING.md. hub_meta_yaml,
hub_pipeline_tags and hub_usage_snippets all need write access to the
organization to do anything, so they are not README material; given the
room, that file can also say what they cannot fix - a config naming a
bpemodel the repository does not hold, or an old config that will not
build against current espnet at all.

What stays in the README is the RuntimeError a hand-uploaded
repository raises - the one part of the meta.yaml story a plain user
meets.

Do not call the front-matter check byte-for-byte.

hub_usage_snippets.apply compares split_front_matter(...)[0].rstrip() values. Differences in trailing whitespace are ignored. Document normalized comparison, or compare the raw front matter before claiming byte-for-byte preservation.

Report blocked hub_meta_yaml rows explicitly.

hub_meta_yaml.apply filters rows with blockers out of ready and never adds them to failed. Therefore, apply does not report every model that it cannot update. State that blockers remain in the plan CSV, or report them during apply.

Separate model-card body edits from metadata writes.

hub_meta_yaml.apply writes meta.yaml, and hub_pipeline_tags.apply updates card front matter. However, hub_usage_snippets.apply can insert a ## Usage section into the README body and commit that model-card content. Update the shared description to mention this exception, and replace “Because only metadata moves” with “Because no weights are re-uploaded.”

Document dry-run validation per tool.

hub_pipeline_tags.apply validates changed cards during a dry run. hub_meta_yaml.apply only prints generated meta.yaml, and hub_usage_snippets.apply skips validation after preparing the updated card. The shared statement can therefore report success without detecting metadata errors. State the validation behavior for each tool.

Four claims in MAINTAINING.md were stronger than the code, from
CodeRabbit on #105. Two I had copied from the module docstrings, which
still carry them.

- "metadata only, never a checkpoint" is wrong for hub_usage_snippets:
it commits README.md, which is card content. The shared guarantee is
that no weights are re-uploaded, so that is what it now says, with a
line naming what each apply writes.
- "--dry-run runs the Hub's validator" holds for hub_pipeline_tags
  alone (card.validate at hub_pipeline_tags.py:423). hub_meta_yaml
prints the meta.yaml and continues; hub_usage_snippets stops before
the commit and never validates - why_the_hub_refused is reached only
from its exception handler. Now a table, one row per tool.
- "reports every model it could not update" skips the blocked ones:
apply's row filter drops every row with a non-empty blockers
(hub_meta_yaml.py:456) before the loop that fills `failed`. They are
in neither printed list, only in the plan CSV, which now says so.
- "front matter carried over byte for byte" compares
  split_front_matter(...)[0].rstrip() on both sides
(hub_usage_snippets.py:537), so trailing whitespace is normalised
  away. Says that instead.

The docstrings in hub_usage_snippets.py and hub_meta_yaml.py have the
same two overclaims. Left alone here rather than putting code edits in a
documentation PR.

Thanks — all four checked against the code, all four were right, and all four are fixed in f09e20d. Two of them I had copied from the module docstrings, which still carry them.

finding the code now says
not byte-for-byte hub_usage_snippets.py:537 compares split_front_matter(...)[0].rstrip() on both sides the front matter is carried over rather than regenerated, and the check would not catch a trailing-whitespace-only difference
blocked rows unreported hub_meta_yaml.py:456 filters not r["blockers"] out before the loop that fills failed apply never attempts them and says nothing about them; the plan CSV is the only place they are recorded
body edits vs metadata hub_usage_snippets.apply commits README.md the shared guarantee is that no weights are re-uploaded; a line now names what each apply writes, and says this one commits card content
dry-run validation card.validate is in the dry-run branch of hub_pipeline_tags.py:423 only — hub_meta_yaml prints the YAML, and hub_usage_snippets reaches why_the_hub_refused only from its exception handler a table, one row per tool

The docstrings in hub_usage_snippets.py and hub_meta_yaml.py have the same two overclaims. I left them alone rather than put code edits in a documentation PR — happy to fix them here or in a follow-up, whichever the maintainers prefer.

Fixed the docstrings here too, in 32f2065 — so the modules no longer say what MAINTAINING.md stopped saying.

  • hub_usage_snippets: "the front matter is carried over byte for byte ... and is checked to be unchanged". The check rstrips both sides (line 537), so a trailing-whitespace-only difference passes it.
  • hub_pipeline_tags: "It reports every model it could not update". apply builds rows from the plan rows that have a pipeline_tag, so a row the plan deliberately left empty is never attempted and never named. Its apply() docstring said "Every model is tried" for the same reason. Both now say which rows they mean and where the rest are recorded.

One correction to my earlier comment: I said hub_meta_yaml.py carried the second overclaim. It does not — its docstring says "for the rows that are ready", which is accurate. hub_pipeline_tags.py is the one.

Docstrings only; no behaviour changed.
