Correct two docstring claims that are stronger than the code - #106
Conversation
The wording MAINTAINING.md had was copied from these, so the modules still said it after f09e20d fixed the copy. hub_usage_snippets: "the front matter is carried over byte for byte ... and is checked to be unchanged" - the check rstrips both sides (line 537), so a difference in trailing whitespace alone passes it. hub_pipeline_tags: "It reports every model it could not update" - apply builds `rows` as the plan rows that have a pipeline_tag, so a row the plan deliberately left empty because nothing decided the tag is never attempted and never named. Its apply() docstring said "Every model is tried" for the same reason. Both now say which rows they mean, and where the rest are recorded. f09e20d's message named hub_meta_yaml.py as carrying the second overclaim. It does not - its docstring says "for the rows that are ready", which is accurate. hub_pipeline_tags.py is the one. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

From CodeRabbit on #106, and right: apply reaches card.validate only for the rows it would have changed. An empty repository returns at the has_model_files check and an already-tagged one at `if not notes`, both before the dry-run branch, so neither is ever validated. "runs the Hub's validator without writing" reads as though every row in the plan is checked. Both docstrings now name the cards it validates and the two it skips. Right, and fixed in 6153e33.
Both the module docstring and Worth noting this is the same class of defect as the two the PR started with — a docstring describing the loop as if the filters above it were not there. Third one in this file. |
What did you change?
Two module docstrings say more than the code does. CodeRabbit found both on #105 — where they had been copied into
MAINTAINING.md— and I fixed the copy there, but #105 merged before the commit fixing the originals landed, so master still carries them. This is that commit, unchanged.hub_usage_snippets— "the front matter is carried over byte for byte ... and is checked to be unchanged before the push."Both sides are
rstriped, so a difference in trailing whitespace alone passes the guard. The docstring now says the front matter is carried over rather than regenerated, and that the guard compares the two sides stripped of trailing whitespace.hub_pipeline_tags— "It reports every model it could not update", and inapply(), "Every model is tried."A row whose tag
plandeliberately left empty, because nothing decided it, is filtered out before the loop: never attempted, never named in the failure list. Both docstrings now say which rows they mean, and that the plan CSV is where the rest are recorded.Docstrings only. No behaviour changes.
Why did you make this change?
A docstring that claims a guarantee the code does not provide is worse than no docstring — someone relies on it. The byte-for-byte one in particular reads as a safety property.
Is your PR small enough?
Yes. Two files, comments only.
