Vercel receives YouTube LOGIN_REQUIRED (“Sign in to confirm you’re not a bot”), so direct caption and audio downloads fail. Nexus previously reported those failures as missing captions and suggested AssemblyAI, although it had no audio to transcribe.

This PR checks YouTube playability before considering paid transcription and reports caption retrieval failures accurately. When SUPADATA_API_KEY is configured, imports fetch timestamped existing captions through Supadata's mode=native. That path does not request AI transcription, and imports run one video at a time to respect the provider's free-tier rate limit. Local runs without a key retain direct YouTube captions.

New channel imports are capped at the latest three videos; the preview shows the same limit.

Verified after merge on the public Nexus domain: Anthropic’s latest three videos indexed with zero failures, and a chat answer cited the newly imported videos with timestamps. TED’s latest three also indexed with zero failures. The successful browser-run video and verification details are in follow-up PR #52. The test suite passed 181 tests, and TypeScript typecheck and production build passed.

AssemblyAI remains disabled in production because Vercel cannot download YouTube audio. Related to #50.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Hosted imports can retrieve existing English YouTube captions through Supadata when an API key is configured. Caption timestamps are preserved, and requests are retried after rate limits.
    • Without a Supadata key, imports continue to fetch captions directly from YouTube, with transcription fallback when captions are missing.
  • Configuration
    • Added SUPADATA_API_KEY to the environment setup instructions. Hosted imports run one video at a time when this key is set.
  • Changes
    • Reduced the channel import limit from 50 videos to 3.

The YouTube loader retrieves captions through Supadata when SUPADATA_API_KEY is configured. Without the key, it retrieves captions from YouTube. Caption retrieval errors and empty transcripts do not trigger STT fallback. Imports run one item at a time when the key is configured, and the channel import limit is three.

Changes

YouTube caption ingestion and imports

Layer / File(s) Summary
Supadata provider and configuration
src/server/ingest/supadata.ts, src/server/ingest/supadata.test.ts, src/env.js, .env.example, README.md
The provider requests native English captions, retries HTTP 429 responses, validates response data, and converts caption times to seconds. The environment and README document SUPADATA_API_KEY. Tests cover requests, response handling, and retries.
Caption selection and STT fallback
src/server/ingest/youtube-loader.ts, src/server/ingest/youtube-loader.test.ts, src/server/ingest/youtube-captions.test.ts, src/server/ingest/stt.ts, src/server/ingest/stt.test.ts
The loader selects Supadata or YouTube captions based on the key. It propagates retrieval errors and uses STT only when YouTube has no captions and Supadata is not configured. Tests cover caption parsing, provider routing, and failure cases. The isNoCaptions classifier and its tests are removed.
Import concurrency and channel limit
src/server/ingest/channel.ts, src/server/ingest/channel.test.ts, src/workflows/channel-import.ts, src/workflows/channel-import.test.ts, src/server/domain/channel-import.ts, src/server/api/routers/imports.test.ts, src/server/imports/channel-import.test.ts
Channel ingestion and channel-import batches process one item at a time when SUPADATA_API_KEY is set. The channel import limit changes from 50 to 3. Tests verify concurrency and the updated limit.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 26d58

Concurrent hosted imports can be throttled and fail, while transient provider errors or stalled responses can also prevent an import from completing. Address these reliability risks before merging or explicitly accept them.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 26d58

Hosted imports will depend on a shared caption-provider account. Imports are serialized within each job, but separate jobs can still compete for that account’s capacity. Authentication and per-user limits reduce the exposure; successful production operation has not yet been verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Serialization applies within an import job, not across jobs sharing the configured provider key. Authenticated users can start independent jobs, so concurrent imports may contend for the same rate limit and affect other users’ caption imports.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Provider-capacity contention can extend beyond the user initiating an import because independently launched jobs use the configured server key. Per-user quotas limit an account’s requests but do not reserve capacity for other users.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An authenticated user can submit allowed import jobs while other jobs are active. The one-at-a-time batch applies inside each job, leaving a possible route to shared-key rate-limit contention; no successful denial of service or production rate-limit failure is established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Import routes require authentication, ownership checks protect job lookup and retry, and a per-user quota guards start and retry. The provider key remains server-side and is sent to a fixed provider host.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Provider 429 responses receive at most three retries after the first attempt, while ordinary item failures are isolated and recorded. Neither mechanism coordinates capacity between separate import jobs.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Coordinate request rate and credit budgets across jobs using the shared provider key, then verify concurrent signed-in imports and recovery during the production rollout.

src/server/ingest/supadata.ts:25-32
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply shared Supadata pacing across keyed imports.

ingestChannel limits concurrency per invocation, and the workflow conflict token is scoped to jobId. Separate keyed imports can therefore call fetchSupadataCaptions within the same one-second window. The Supadata Free plan allows one request per second across all endpoints. These requests can receive HTTP 429 responses and incur retry delays. Repeated throttling can exhaust the four retries and fail the import.

Apply a limiter shared by all callers that use the same Supadata API key. The limiter must cover separate workflow invocations, not only videos within one import.
