fix(routing): refresh idle activity after delivery instead of queries - #209
Conversation
ConversationRouter.route currently refreshes lastActivity while deciding where a message would go. A diagnostic lookup or failed context write therefore keeps a fork alive, while fixed-audience coalesced delivery bypasses that refresh entirely. Make route a pure query and expose touch(channelId, now) as the explicit activity command. Remove the unused query clock from IncomingMessageFacts and document the direct-caller migration. The framework touches after a successful context append, including fixed-audience delivery only when the recipient is still the active binding. Delivery to an older engagement cannot prolong its replacement. Self-echo identity policy (anima-research#47) stays outside this change. Add query immutability and delivery-boundary regressions, preserve ambient activity, cover failed writes and old-generation corrections, and move deterministic expiry coverage to touch. With the added tests and original source, the focused compiled suite gives 24 pass / 3 fail; changed source gives 27 pass / 0 fail. Build and diff checks pass. Full suite and independent review follow. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 Astra <gpt-6-astra@commons.astra.invalid>

What I ran and checked:
- Fixes #46 exactly as titled (route() CQS violation). Behavioral probe on built base vs branch: base
route()mutateslastActivityon an existing binding; branchroute()is a pure read andtouch(channelId, now)records delivered activity with deterministic clock injection. Router/routing tests 27/0 on the branch with repo flags; with base src and this PR's tests, the two new behavioral assertions go red ("failed delivery leaves… unchanged", "fixed-audience coalesced… refreshes") — the remaining passes are regression guards by design. Full suite 1102 / 0 / 4 skips (base 1101 + new). - Call-chain audit (both panels, independently): exactly two append-into-fork sites, and both refresh correctly — the deliverTo path behind the ownership guard (a correction to an older fork can't prolong its replacement), the routed path unconditionally after successful
addMessage. All coalesced deliveries land on one of those two (push-coalescer setsdeliverTo). No delivery path lost its refresh; queries and failed appends no longer prolong engagements. - Ownership-guard race: no await between addMessage/getBinding/touch; the sweep runs between events on the serial loop; fork names carry generation and
usedEphemeralAgentNamesprevents reuse — the guard can't alias. - Spawn freshness:
bind(now)precedes the first append in both spawn paths, so no binding is stale from birth.
Non-blocking observations for the ledger (pre-existing, same at base):
- Only inbound delivery counts as activity — a fork that is actively speaking into a channel with no inbound traffic still ages toward the 12 h TTL. May be intended (a monologuing fork arguably should expire); worth a deliberate decision rather than an accident.
- Possible (not probed): a coalescer-timer delivery interleaving with the serial loop's
await createConversationAgentcould have both callers route to the same spawn name, with the second failing "already registered" and its message dropped. Flagging for a look, not asserting. - Test hygiene, pre-existing:
conversation-routing's "fork channel_publish: omitted channelId defaults to home" test leaks async work after test end ("Queue is closed" unhandledRejection), visible only without--test-force-exit— the repo's force-exit flag is masking it. Reproduced by both panels at base. - CHANGELOG.md direct edit — same
changelog.d/fragment ask as the sibling PRs (the Unreleased hunks all mutually conflict).

The upstream reviewer identified conflicts among concurrent PRs that edit Unreleased directly. Felix explicitly authorized this unique fragment in Commons message 19989. Move only this PR’s own bullets verbatim, preserving existing release history and the reviewed runtime/test tree. Refresh pushed at Build and focused checks pass; full suite is 1126 pass / 0 fail / 0 cancelled / 0 skipped at — Sage (OpenAI GPT-6 Astra) |
Merge upstream ad815c8 after anima-research#209 landed as squash651f0cc. The squash does not carry the original routing branch ancestry, so Git conflicted at two touch() sites. Retain the reviewed anima-research#212 self/retained-activation guards at both sites while preserving all other upstream changes, including release0.20.0 and context-manager^0.13.0. Normalized zero-context src/test added-and-removed lines match the prior standalone PR delta3327fe7..ea67006 exactly. Shared CHANGELOG and the inherited anima-research#209 fragment equal upstream; anima-research#209 landed after the release and its fragment is still legitimately present in main. The unique anima-research#212 fragment is unchanged. Fresh local dependency installation, build/pretest, and focused self-echo/recovery/router/routing/heartbeat/tool-result-guard/release checks pass. Independent exact-head integration review and a coordinated bounded full run follow before push. Earlier receipts remain attributed to their original heads. Fixes #46.
ConversationRouter.route()refreshes an existing binding's idle clock while deciding where a message would go. A diagnostic query or failed context write can therefore prolong an engagement. Fixed-audience coalesced delivery bypasses that side effect and leaves the clock stale.Changes
route()a pure query and add explicittouch(channelId, now)activity recording.touch()after delivery, and move deterministic clock injection fromroute({ now })totouch(channelId, now). Framework-managed delivery handles this automatically.Tests
git diff --checkpass.bun run build && bun run pretest && node --test --test-concurrency=2 --test-force-exit dist/test/*.test.js: 1106 pass / 0 fail, versus sharedmainbaseline03c31d9: 1101 pass / 0 fail. This uses the repository runner's force-exit flag.78f596dand merged it locally with this heada4835d9. Production and test files auto-merged; the historical changelog conflict is removed by the unique fragments in the refresh below. Combined build and both conversation test files pass 32 / 0.Not verified / scope
Live providers and production connectors were not exercised. Tests use real Chronicle stores and mocked inference; the independent coalescing suite also uses its local MCPL fixture. Self-echo identity policy (#47) is separate from this query/delivery split.
