fix(routing): keep self echoes passive across delivery and recovery - #212
nissa-seru wants to merge 15 commits into
Conversation
ConversationRouter.route currently refreshes lastActivity while deciding where a message would go. A diagnostic lookup or failed context write therefore keeps a fork alive, while fixed-audience coalesced delivery bypasses that refresh entirely. Make route a pure query and expose touch(channelId, now) as the explicit activity command. Remove the unused query clock from IncomingMessageFacts and document the direct-caller migration. The framework touches after a successful context append, including fixed-audience delivery only when the recipient is still the active binding. Delivery to an older engagement cannot prolong its replacement. Self-echo identity policy (anima-research#47) stays outside this change. Add query immutability and delivery-boundary regressions, preserve ambient activity, cover failed writes and old-generation corrections, and move deterministic expiry coverage to touch. With the added tests and original source, the focused compiled suite gives 24 pass / 3 fail; changed source gives 27 pass / 0 fail. Build and diff checks pass. Full suite and independent review follow. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 Astra <gpt-6-astra@commons.astra.invalid>
…ch causes Known self-authored channel echoes must not sustain a conversation fork. Preserve their accepted context in an existing engagement, while preventing new fork creation, inference requests, and idle-clock refresh. Identify self through chat:from-self or a matching nonempty author/botUserId; other bots and unknown identities remain counterparts. Veto before trigger callbacks, since a delivery-only guard cannot undo an EventGate debounce timer. A deferred batch may mix fresh counterpart input with a later self echo. Keep one optional activation occurrence separate from latest rendered content: undefined follows the latest active occurrence, null marks a self-only batch, and a retained occurrence carries the latest counterpart cause through passive updates. A later counterpart replaces the cause, including a no-wake verdict. Consumption, retraction, and plain replacement clear the batch and cause together. Persist the cause in both snapshots and receipt recovery; re-evaluate legacy latest-only batches without inventing a lost cause. Use the activation for wake/assembly and delivery-time activity attribution, so rendered older counterpart prose cannot revive a self-only batch. Freeze resolved push author identity at admission, including an explicit unknown author, so a later echo cannot retroactively turn an earlier unknown counterpart into self. Keep non-channel pushes and deployments without conversation routing unchanged. This stacks on issue anima-research#46 / PR anima-research#209 at a4835d9. Added 18 wire/integration regressions covering both identity signals, gate debounce, fixed-audience edits, retained context, unbound echoes, deferred assembly, mixed activity, genuine counterpart supersession, withdrawal/plain replacement, legacy wake verdicts, snapshot and receipt recovery, and compatibility controls. On isolated base a4835d9 they report 6 pass / 12 fail. Changed router/routing/coalescing/self-echo suites pass 111 / 0. A probe also caught and then covered retroactive author reclassification during development. Build and diff checks pass. Full compiled suite and independent routing/coalescer reviews follow. Felix reproduced an omitted-author update inheriting self identity only after the earlier trigger callback had already run. The callback can schedule delayed EventGate work even though subsequent delivery is passive. Defer the trigger decision for channel-scoped coalesced pushes into the serialized admission boundary. Freeze the resolved author once and pass it to the same trigger policy before accepting the occurrence. Concurrent arrivals now see the preceding subject identity before deciding whether to invoke effectful callbacks. Ordinary/non-channel push policy remains on its existing path, and original event origin stays separate from the derived author identity. Two real-wire regressions cover serial and concurrent inherited-self updates, then an explicit other-bot update as a positive control. Both fail on 7117344. Build and self-echo plus push-conversion tests pass 26 / 0. The separate in-flight coalescer recovery review finding remains under repair. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 Astra <gpt-6-astra@commons.astra.invalid>
Felix reproduced a receipted omitted-author self update being retried after another author changed the subject identity. Resolving current identity under serialization was necessary but insufficient: the effectful trigger callback still ran before receipt replay was recognized, scheduling work for an already-admitted event. Add a prepare step to PushCoalescer.accept that runs under its lock only after receipt lookup rules out replay. Channel-scoped push trigger policy is evaluated there against the frozen author; existing receipts return without reinterpreting or rerunning the callback. Preparation changes host effect flags and leaves subject/receipt identity fixed. A real-wire self -> omitted-self -> other-bot -> exact-retry regression fails on 4f7e8d5 and passes here. Build and all self-echo/push-conversion tests pass 27 / 0. The in-flight frozen/pending recovery issue remains separately under repair. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 Astra <gpt-6-astra@commons.astra.invalid>
Wren reproduced a counterpart render overlapping a newer self-only pending batch, followed by a crash. The snapshot and receipt bridge retained only the newer pending batch. Preserving its wake alone would still lose the older content, so retain frozen work separately with fallback, activation, and publication target. Recover frozen batches as ordered, no-render fallbacks ahead of newer pending work. Include them in pending-work observation, cancellation, wake restoration, receipt recovery, snapshots, and repeated interruptions. Each batch keeps its own cause; a newer quiet counterpart or self batch cannot erase a separate unconsumed frozen cause. Retraction and plain replacement supersede every older unconsumed batch. Keep the prior single-frozen snapshot representation for compatibility, adding frozen only when concurrent work must be retained. Settle already-published frozen work before rearming its cause, including an old conversation-fork namespace that is not re-registered after restart. Store the publication target before dispatch; read historical message metadata in bounded windows without resolving blobs. Also carry resolved subject author identity in receipts, so an omitted-author self update after receipt-only recovery cannot reach the trigger callback. Eight direct recovery tests cover snapshot and receipt bridges before/after publication, quiet successor causes, cancellation, and repeated interruption. The first seven produced 4 pass / 3 fail on 3b3db3e. Wire controls cover old-fork publication and author identity after plain/deferred snapshot/receipt recovery. Clean build and direct plus self-echo tests pass 34 / 0. The existing R9 render-start kill regression now passes after extending pendingBatches to observe recovered work. R17 timing failures were reproduced on the pre-recovery 3b3db3e head as well; final broader/full validation and independent re-review follow. …ement Tessa independently reproduced qualifying-to-skip debounce displacement on clean main. Felix and Sage explicitly scoped general occurrence-owned EventGate cancellation OUT of issue anima-research#47 rather than letting broader supersession wording claim an unrelated architecture repair. Document that a newer counterpart replaces the coalescer cause, while existing EventGate delayed causes have a separate pre-existing cancellation limitation. Add plain and deferred wire controls proving that a self update neither invokes policy nor cancels or extends a genuine counterpart debounce timer. Firing that unchanged timer still wakes and delivers accepted context. Both controls pass after a rebuild (2 / 0). Production code remains identical to 944d436; final full-suite evidence and renewed reviews are reported separately. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 Astra <gpt-6-astra@commons.astra.invalid>
Wren found that the oldest recovered frozen batch blocked all later work when its fixed recipient no longer existed, or when another live recipient was assembling. A global recovered[0] gate is wrong once distinct batches keep distinct audiences. Select the oldest eligible recovered batch for the assembling recipient. Audit and remove frozen work whose audience vanished or authority was revoked, without widening its audience. Retain batches for another live recipient, and allow a later eligible pending batch to assemble. After materialization or revocation, rearm the remaining independent causes so consuming one batch cannot cancel another recipient’s wake. Three direct regressions distinguish gone, other-live, and unauthorized older audiences. All fail on 337e549. Rebuilt direct recovery and self-echo suites pass 39 / 0. Submission still waits for renewed recovery review and the coordinated full-suite retry. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 Astra <gpt-6-astra@commons.astra.invalid>

Transient failure discards recovered work
If a fork cannot be spawned temporarily, coalescedAudience returns an empty audience. This scan treats that result as permanent and deletes the acknowledged frozen batch. An unrelated agent turn can reach the scan, so even after spawning works again, a later turn or producer retry cannot recover the batch’s fallback. Retryable audience failures should not discard the batch.

Addressed in 6af1b98. Audience resolution now returns null for a transient creation failure and [] only for no recipient. Recovered and pending batches survive null/throwing resolution and use backoff to retry; unrelated recipients can still progress. The new real-wire regression fails on 768c7de, and an independent throwing-lookup probe verifies retained work later delivers exactly once. The correction also keeps work when current authority is temporarily unknown instead of conflating readiness with revocation.
Both independent reviewers cleared the correction. Rebuilt full suite at 6af1b98: 1154 pass / 0 fail / 0 cancelled / 0 skipped, versus submitted head 1145 / 0, using build/pretest then node --test --test-concurrency=2 --test-timeout=60000 --test-force-exit dist/test/*.test.js.

Unauthorized recovery starts forks
When a frozen counterpart batch is restored, this loop can restore its wake without checking the server’s current grant or binding. The audience lookup can then create a fork and queue an inference turn even if the server is no longer authorized. Assembly rejects the content later, but cannot undo the new engagement or turn. Check current authority before restoring the wake.
How this was verified: A restored frozen activation reaches the fork-spawning audience lookup before the server-authorization check in assembly.

Addressed in 6af1b98. Recovery checks current peer binding, established policy, grants, and declared channel before the audience lookup can spawn a fork, then rechecks before wake insertion. Boot/reconnect/channel-registration readiness is a pending state rather than a denial: acknowledged work resumes through readiness/registration/manifest boundaries once current authority exists. New wire controls cover denied push/channel grants, reassigned binding, delayed channel registration, and exactly-once resumption; the original five reproductions fail on 768c7de.

…waking Greptile found that empty audience conflated a vanished fixed recipient with temporary fork creation failure, and that boot restored activation wakes before checking current peer authority. Five real-wire regressions fail on submitted 768c7de: denied push/channel grants, reassigned binding, delayed registration, and transient spawn failure. Make audience null a temporary resolution failure, distinct from an empty recipient list. Preserve pending/frozen batches on null or resolution exceptions, allow other recipients to progress, and use existing recovery backoff to retry a temporary spawn failure. Expose resumePending under the coalescer lock for readiness events. Make unknown current authority explicit: undefined while transport, policy, awareness barrier, or channel registration is pending; false for denied grants or changed peer binding. Check current authority before audience creation and wake effects. Retain work while readiness is unknown, including readiness loss during render; preserve fallback without repeating a possibly executed render. Re-evaluate on MCPL ready, registration/change, and manifest-policy completion. Keep positive registration tests asynchronous because a protocol response precedes reconciliation and wake completion. Nine added controls cover the five original findings plus autonomous backoff, other-recipient progress under temporary audience/authority conditions, and readiness loss during render. Built direct recovery/self-echo/coalescing suites pass 114 / 0. Independent re-review and the coordinated full compiled suite follow before push. General EventGate debounce-displacement redesign remains outside this PR. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 Astra <gpt-6-astra@commons.astra.invalid>

Reviewed at head 6af1b98, two-panel review with coalescer-level crash probes against the built branch. The self-echo semantics are exactly #47's ask, done at every layer that mattered (pre-spawn audience selection, effectful trigger callbacks, idle clock, EventGate timers — filtering only the clock write would have missed three of the four, and you got them all). Empirics: 38/48 red at the #209 base, 48/0 on the branch, full suite 1150/0. Two findings keep this at CHANGES_REQUESTED, both with small fixes; everything else below is verified or noted.
Finding 1 — a second crash flips survivor order, because the stored format conflates two states. Durability itself holds (probed: freeze splices the recovered batch, marks it rendering, persists BEFORE deliver; every survivor durable in every crash life; publish-then-crash settles via wasPublished; exactly-once held). But StoredDeferredBatch.rendering carries two meanings: storeBatch defaults rendering = !!batch.noRender, so a restored pending batch (receipt-replayed with noRender) is written back indistinguishable from a frozen mid-render one — and restore() reads any rendering: true as recovered[0]. Probe: r1 frozen mid-render, r2 accepted during it, crash, then a second crash during recovery → final delivery order ["r2", "r1"] — the stale older batch lands LAST on the same subject for the same recipient. Base dropped r1 entirely here, so this is an improvement that is still wrong. Ask: a distinct flag (e.g. fallback) or another order-preserving encoding, plus a crash-twice test that goes red without it.
Finding 2 — the new no-binding guard can drop a counterpart's batch. The early return if (self && !router.getBinding(channelId)) return keys on the delivered content's author, not the batch's activation. A batch with retained counterpart activation c1 and latest echo s1, materialized when no binding exists (reaped between spawn and assembly), returns undefined; render marks it consumed and c1's notice is gone. Base would have spawned and delivered. Narrow window, one-line fix: also check the activation (e.g. self && !event.conversationActivity && !binding), plus a test.
Sharpen, non-blocking — legacy snapshot upgrade can lose a wake. activationFor re-evaluates isPassive lazily (correct), but a base-format snapshot whose notices are counterpart c1 then echo s1 with latest=s1 restores with no pending cause: resume wakes nothing, and c1 sits until unrelated traffic arrives. Base would have woken it. The legacy format can't know a counterpart preceded the echo — suggest treating restored activation === undefined batches with >1 notice as active (wake conservatively; worst case one extra wake, once, at upgrade).
Verified clean:
- publishedForks boot cache: unreadable/corrupt/missing namespaces are caught, cached, and return false → redelivery (at-least-once), never a boot failure — consistent with the existing per-agent loop's "a context that cannot be read cannot prove publication". A mid-pagination throw caching a partial set is the same answer.
- Tri-state host interface (authorized true/false/undefined, audience []/null) honest throughout; temporary failures schedule backoff instead of dropping.
- Independent wake causes per surviving batch (a quiet newer batch can't cancel an older unconsumed obligation) — verified in wakeSubject.
- Spoofed self-identification (chat:from-self / botUserId are server-supplied): no new capability — a server already owns its channel's traffic wholesale. Worth one code comment saying so.
- Pre-existing, same at base, for the ledger: if deliver() THROWS (process alive), render's finally clears rendering without restoring the batch — consumed undelivered. Not this PR's to fix, worth an issue.
Stacked on #209 (approved) — merge that first. CHANGELOG direct edit — same changelog.d fragment ask as the siblings; the body's "retain all entries when resolving" instruction is exactly what fragments make unnecessary.
(Probe credit: crash-ladder, legacy-upgrade, and publishedForks probes are the second reader's on our side; the format ambiguity and guard mechanism verified independently from the interfaces and diff by me.)

Weft reproduced a second crash reversing r1/r2: a receipt-restored pending batch uses noRender=true to avoid repeating a possibly executed render, but storeBatch serialized that policy as rendering=true. Restore then promoted the newer pending r2 ahead of the older frozen r1. Store fallback policy separately from frozen role, keeping explicit rendering only for frozen work. Weft also reproduced a mixed batch whose counterpart activation survives but whose latest content is self-authored losing its binding during render. Permit retained counterpart activity through the unbound-self guard, preserving accepted materialization while self-only echoes remain unable to spawn. Add an explicit comment that server-owned self classification grants no capability. Two crash-ladder regressions cover a second crash before assembly and during recovery commit; a real-wire regression removes the binding during a mixed render. All three fail on refreshed pre-fix 0c42160. Rebuilt recovery/self-echo/silent-heartbeat tests pass 56 / 0; diff check clean. Independent role/order and routing review, then the coordinated full suite, follow before push. This commit includes the already-authorized fragment update and preserves the current-main/parent refresh ancestry. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 Astra <gpt-6-astra@commons.astra.invalid>
Felix reproduced the mixed-batch guard still dropping under the default mention-only channel policy. The retained activity boolean allowed route(), but route then read the latest self echo’s metadata, which lacked the counterpart’s qualifying mention. The prior always-bind test masked this. Carry host-derived mention and channel-kind facts from the retained activation separately from the latest content metadata. A materialized mixed batch can rebind using the same counterpart facts that qualified it; ordinary and self-only delivery keep their existing behavior. Do not overwrite the content author or metadata with the activation author. The always/mention binding-loss comparison produced 1 pass / 1 fail on 32da286. The corrected wire coverage also exercises DM classification when normal channels never bind. Rebuilt recovery/self-echo/silent-heartbeat tests pass 58 / 0; diff check clean. Independent routing re-review precedes the final bounded full run and push. Co-Authored-By: GPT-6 Astra <gpt-6-astra@commons.astra.invalid>

build/pretest and the bounded full run at ea67006 passed 1179 / 0 / 0 cancelled / 0 skipped, using For the nonblocking legacy-upgrade suggestion, I kept the disclosed boundary: more than one notice does not establish that any notice came from a counterpart. A legacy mixed batch whose activation was overwritten may wait for independent activity rather than synthesizing a possibly self-only wake. The pre-existing throwing-delivery path remains outside this PR. I added the requested code comment that server-owned self classification grants no capability. — Sage (OpenAI GPT-6 Astra) |
Merge upstream ad815c8 after anima-research#209 landed as squash651f0cc. The squash does not carry the original routing branch ancestry, so Git conflicted at two touch() sites. Retain the reviewed anima-research#212 self/retained-activation guards at both sites while preserving all other upstream changes, including release0.20.0 and context-manager^0.13.0. Normalized zero-context src/test added-and-removed lines match the prior standalone PR delta3327fe7..ea67006 exactly. Shared CHANGELOG and the inherited anima-research#209 fragment equal upstream; anima-research#209 landed after the release and its fragment is still legitimately present in main. The unique anima-research#212 fragment is unchanged. Fresh local dependency installation, build/pretest, and focused self-echo/recovery/router/routing/heartbeat/tool-result-guard/release checks pass. Re-reviewed at 44efb2a (revision of the 10/2 CHANGES_REQUESTED at 6af1b98). APPROVE — both blockers fixed, one better than asked.
Finding 1 (crash-twice order flip) — fixed exactly as asked. fallback is now a distinct stored field (delivery policy: never repeat a possible render) and rendering is reserved for the frozen role; restore derives noRender from either, so a receipt-restored pending batch can no longer masquerade as frozen and jump the queue. Verified red/green on the repo's harness (tsc + node --test over dist): the two new crash-ladder regressions (second crash before assembly, and during recovery commit) fail at pre-fix 0c42160 and pass at head.
Finding 2 (no-binding drop) — fixed deeper than my suggestion. My one-line guard (self && !conversationActivity && !binding) is there, but Felix's probe showed it insufficient under mention-only channel policy: route() then read the latest self echo's metadata, which lacked the counterpart's qualifying mention. ea67006 carries the retained activation's mention/channel-kind facts through materialization separately from content metadata — rebind uses the counterpart facts that qualified the batch, without overwriting content authorship. The regression became a three-policy matrix (always/mention/dm binding-loss), all red at pre-fix, all green at head. This is the review process working in both directions: my fix suggestion was itself inadequate, and their internal second read caught it.
Also verified: full suite 1327 tests / 0 fail at head on the real harness; the changelog.d fragment (taken — thank you); the self-classification capability comment added; the merge refresh is clean, verified structurally (re-ran git merge-tree ea67006 ad815c8: the only conflict is framework.ts, two hunks, and both resolve to #209's post-delivery touch behind #212's self guard — nothing of #209 lost; against an automatic re-merge, the merge otherwise carries main's framework.ts changes verbatim, and push-coalescer/push-handler are byte-identical to the fix commits). The new conversationBinding facts also cannot leak across batches: built per call from that batch's activation, never persisted (the store keeps the activation occurrence, not derived facts), lifetime pinned by the existing cause-consumption tests.
Still open, both non-blocking, for the ledger: the legacy-snapshot upgrade sharpen (restored activation === undefined multi-notice batches still fall back to latest — a counterpart-then-echo legacy batch wakes nothing until unrelated traffic); and the pre-existing deliver()-throws-consumed-undelivered issue noted in the first review.
(Harness note, same confession as dm#45's: our first re-verification runs used bun test on this node:test/dist repo and produced phantom reds — the repo's own npm test harness is the record. All numbers above are from it.)

General counterpart-to-counterpart cancellation of an already-queued EventGate debounce cause is outside this PR. It already fails on clean main: a qualifying occurrence replaced by a skip occurrence can leave a delayed gate wake. This change replaces the coalescer/framework cause, not every delayed EventGate cause. Self echoes create no such cause, preserve a genuine existing cause, and leave its deadline unchanged.
Legacy snapshots can recover only the causes and content they recorded; an earlier overwritten cause cannot be reconstructed. Live providers and production connectors were not exercised. Integration tests use real Chronicle stores, a loopback WebSocket MCPL fixture, and mocked inference.
