[companion] feat(composer): send images and text files with steers and follow-ups - #77
andrebrait wants to merge 4 commits into
Conversation
omp's steer, follow_up and prompt+streamingBehavior RPC commands accept images, so queued messages no longer need to be text-only. Allow attaching (+ menu, paste, drag and drop) while the agent runs, fold text files into the queued message as an idle send does, and let attachments alone turn Stop into Queue. Edit no longer restores omp's "[Image]" placeholder for an image-only queued message.

Preserve images until the queue request succeeds
When a steer or follow-up RPC fails—for example, after a transient network error—these callbacks are asynchronous, but the composer immediately calls clearInput(). The error handlers in useAgentSession restore only the message text with insertIfEmpty(message) and do not receive the attachments, so every selected image is irretrievably lost even though the message was never queued. Await a success result before clearing, or retain/recover the images on rejection; the slash-command paths above have the same issue.

Fixed in 453ea58: a refused steer/follow-up/queued prompt now returns its images to the draft (and Edit/Stop return images too). The stale changelog note is removed.
…ueing A steer or follow-up omp refuses, a queued message taken back by Edit, and the queue Stop withdraws now return their images to the draft, not just their text. Draft recovery (recoverDraft) carries images; Stop reads them from abort_and_restore_queue and Edit from remove_queued_message (can1357/oh-my-pi#14179). omp's "[Image]" label is never restored as text. The stale "queued messages remain text-only" changelog note is removed.

Recover the whole refused message into its original draft
When a queue RPC is still pending and the user starts typing or switches sessions before it is rejected, this new failure path restores only the captured images to key. The text—including any text-file content folded into the message—is still handled by useAgentSession through chatInputRef.current.insertIfEmpty(message), which skips recovery when the current composer is nonempty and can target a different session after navigation. The refused message can therefore be split across sessions or lose its text-file contents; recover the composed text and images together through the captured draft key instead.

Fixed in 94a7f7b: the composer recovers the refused message (composed text and images) into the draft key captured at send time through recoverDraft; the hook no longer calls insertIfEmpty.
The composer now puts a refused steer, follow-up or queued prompt back into the draft it was sent from, text and images together. The hook's insertIfEmpty only restored the text, skipped it when the composer had new typing, and could land in another session after navigation.

Preserve literal
[Image] queue text
When a user queues the literal text [Image] without an attachment, Edit removes the message and restores an empty string because this check does not distinguish it from omp's image-only label. The Stop path has the same unconditional filtering in withdrawAndAbort, so either action silently loses that valid text; suppress the label only when the returned entry actually contains images.

Do not discard overflow images during draft recovery
When recovery would exceed MAX_ATTACHED_IMAGES—for example, Stop returns two queued image messages, or a refused 10-image message returns after the user attaches another image—this slice silently drops the overflow. The following draft-persistence effect then overwrites the store from the truncated React state, making those returned images irrecoverable; recovery needs to retain or otherwise expose every image instead of truncating it here.
AGENTS.md reference: AGENTS.md:L263-L266
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
Edit and Stop drop omp's "[Image]" label only when the entry carries images, so a message that literally reads "[Image]" survives. Recovered images are no longer truncated at the attachment cap; sending still enforces it, so the user picks which to keep.

Review-only companion to kahme247#214. Identical head and matching upstream base.
Verification: typecheck, lint, full local suite (1,133 pass / 0 failures), regression test failing on main, live omp 18.6.2 RPC smoke of image follow-ups. Condensed adversarial review complete.
Codex and CodeRabbit have current availability evidence on this repository (#75). Upstream is read-only for this account, so review requests go here after upstream CI is green.
