[companion] feat(notifications): desktop and mobile notifications with Web Push - #78
andrebrait wants to merge 18 commits into
Conversation
Detect finished runs, pending questions, failed runs and automatic model switches on the server, route them by tab presence and per-device prefs, and deliver them as in-app toasts, in-page system notifications, or Web Push through a new service worker. Adds Settings -> Notifications and replaces the old foreground-only completion notification.
- Guard crypto.randomUUID so plain-HTTP LAN origins keep working. - Split presence from SSE streams: reconnects no longer leak notifications for the viewed session, and a tab with Settings open no longer silences other devices. - Count a tab as present only with recent input; Settings hides its session. - Take the fallback reason from the retry error omp sends after the fallback. - Report real push results from the test button; validate subscription keys; time out pushes; never let a push failure throw. - Re-subscribe when the server dropped the subscription; single-flight it. - Sync prefs across tabs; sync on load only for enabled devices. - Fall back to a toast when system notifications are not allowed. - Test the rpc-manager wiring and the cases the review listed.

Treat unsettled background work as running on exit
If the main agent emits terminal agent_end and prompt_result with sessionSettled: false, both flags tested here have already been cleared even though background subagents are still working. If omp exits before the later session_settled, this branch skips the error notification and no completion notification can arrive, leaving an unwatched failed session silent. Track the unsettled stretch separately and include it in this exit check.

Fixed in 2e5098d: the wrapper tracks an unsettled stretch (set on agent_start, cleared on session_settled) and a crash in that window notifies "Run failed". Test: lib/rpc-manager.test.mjs "a crash after the turn ended but before background work settled still notifies".

Coordinate the notification store across omp-web instances
In the supported setup where an installed server and npm run dev share the agent directory, each process permanently caches its first copy of notifications.json. A device or VAPID key registered by one instance is therefore invisible to the other, and the other's next save can overwrite the file from its stale snapshot, causing missed pushes or invalid subscriptions. Reload and merge under cross-process coordination rather than treating this cache as authoritative.

Fixed in 2e5098d with a different approach: the hub no longer caches notifications.json; every read and read-modify-write goes to disk, so instances sharing the agent dir see each other's devices and keys. No cross-process lock: a same-millisecond write race can lose one update, and the tab re-syncs on its next load (marked in a ponytail comment). Test: lib/notification-hub.test.mjs "another omp-web instance sharing the agent dir ...".

Preserve notification clicks through authentication
When password protection is enabled and the cookie has expired or changed, matchAll() can select an existing /login page (or a stale app page), but that client does not successfully handle this session message; the worker nevertheless returns immediately. Consequently, clicking the push never opens the notified session after login. The click target needs to survive the authentication flow instead of being discarded after posting to an unauthenticated client.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Fixed in 2e5098d: the worker posts to app windows (/) only and navigates any other window (the sign-in page) to the session URL. proxy.ts now redirects /?session=… to /login?next=/?session=…, and the login form returns to next when it starts with /?. The app also falls back to a full load of the session URL when /api/sessions fails. Verified live: an unauthenticated /?session=abc-123 went to /login?next=…, and signing in landed on /?session=abc-123.

- Notify a crash while background work started by the run is unsettled. - Read the notification store from disk on every use so omp-web instances sharing the agent directory see each other's devices and keys. - Keep notification clicks through an expired sign-in: proxy.ts carries /?session= to /login as next, the login form returns there, and the worker navigates non-app windows. - Show the test notification as a toast where system notifications are not allowed.

Notify terminal RPC response failures
When omp reports an asynchronous prompt failure as response { success: false }—the protocol case handled in rpc-manager.ts by emitting prompt_error and returning—the frame never reaches this detector, whose only error path is prompt_result. Consequently, an enabled unwatched session receives no run-failed notification; publish an error before the response branch returns or normalize the failure through this detector.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 6ca2871 as suggested: the failed-response branch now feeds its prompt_error through the detector before returning, and the detector reports one failure per run, so a later prompt_result error or crash does not repeat it. Tests: rpc-manager "an asynchronous prompt failure (failed response) notifies the user", notification-events "a run failure reported by omp-web and again by omp notifies once".

Match presence across session-move aliases
When a non-owner session moves to a new id, existing tabs continue addressing the same wrapper through the retained old-id alias, and their presence still reports that selected old id. Emitting notifications only with the wrapper's new _sessionId makes routeNotification miss its equality check, so completion or input notifications can appear for the conversation currently on screen; route using all live aliases or update the client's presence identity when the move occurs.

Fixed in 6ca2871 as suggested: the wrapper keeps the ids a moved session had and sends them as aliases, and routing treats a visible tab on any of them as viewing the session. Test: notification-hub "a tab still showing a moved session's old id counts as viewing it".
…on ids - Feed omp-web's prompt_error (async prompt failure) and process exits through the detector, reporting one failure per run. - Carry a moved session's earlier ids so tabs still showing an old id count as viewing it.

Serialize notification preference updates
When a user changes two notification controls quickly, each call starts an independent PUT containing the preference snapshot from that moment. If the older request completes last, it overwrites the newer server-side settings, so subsequent pushes can use types, locale, or active-mode options that disagree with the UI until a later app load resynchronizes them. Serialize or coalesce these writes so only the latest snapshot can become authoritative.

On a rapid session switch, the old effect's unawaited presence POST can arrive after the new session's POST and overwrite the same clientId with the old sessionId. Until the next 30-second heartbeat, routing can suppress notifications globally for the session no longer being viewed while delivering a notification for the session currently on screen. Include a monotonic generation in reports or otherwise serialize them so the server can ignore stale updates.

A failed save that turned notifications off left the server pushing. Browsers that ever saved settings now sync on every load; browsers that never opened the setting still stay off the device list.
|
@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding "Sync disabled preferences on startup": fixed in 02891b8 with a narrower change than suggested. Startup now syncs for every browser that has saved notification settings, enabled or not, so a failed save that turned notifications off is repaired on the next load. Browsers that never opened the setting still do not sync, which keeps them out of the server's 50-device store (an earlier review fix). Please review this commit. |

Clear moved-session aliases after switching sessions
Clear movedFromIds when applyIdentity handles a genuine branch/new/switch transition. Otherwise, after a moved conversation is forked or switched, notifications from the new independent session still carry the previous conversation's IDs; any visible tab left on one of those IDs then causes routeNotification to suppress the new session's notifications globally. The retained aliases are only valid while the wrapper represents the same moved conversation.

Refresh push status after startup subscription repair
Refresh pushActive after the app-level startup sync completes rather than deriving it from this one initial GET. When a saved, enabled browser loads directly into Settings after the server store was lost, this request can return subscribed: false, while useNotifications immediately recreates and stores the subscription; the panel remains stuck in the in-page-only state and its Test button sends a local notification instead of testing the now-active push until Settings is remounted.

Fixed in 5aefbb7 as suggested: for enabled browsers, Settings joins the single-flight ensurePushSubscription (the same repair the app runs at startup) and shows its result, so the status and Test button reflect the repaired subscription. …w repaired push status - A genuine session switch drops the previous conversation's moved-from ids, so a tab left on one of them no longer silences the new session. - Settings joins the single-flight push repair for enabled browsers, so its status and test button reflect the subscription after the repair.

Repair push state after an expired test subscription
When the test push receives a 404/410, sendPush removes the device's server-side subscription before this response arrives, but this branch leaves pushActive true. Every later click therefore keeps POSTing to the server and gets “no push subscription,” while the panel still reports push as active, until it is remounted or the app reloads. The startup-repair fix does not cover this runtime expiration path; refresh via ensurePushSubscription() or clear pushActive after this failure.

Bound notification titles before creating push payloads
A live session can retain an arbitrarily long user-supplied name: the rename endpoint accepts a request of up to 64 KiB, and AgentSessionWrapper caches the submitted name without applying the fixed-slot truncation. This unbounded title is serialized into every Web Push payload, so a long pasted rename can exceed push-service payload limits and make all subsequent notifications for that session fail. Clip the title, and ideally the complete rendered payload, before sending it.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
