feat(agent): name the step inside nsrestore a restore failure came from - #690
Every failure nsrestore reported arrived under one step, running nsrestore, though the rootfs diff, the CRIU restore, the CUDA restore and the LSM setup are where most restore failures happen. The step added nothing for the common case, and the guide entry had to cover four unrelated failure classes in one place.
nsrestore wraps each of its phases with one of six steps:
Step
What runs there
Typical failure
checking the staged checkpoint
re-reads the manifest from the staged checkpoint, checks the PageBroker execution matches the checkpoint
staged copy is not the one the agent validated; agent and nsrestore from different builds
preparing CRIU restore
rewrites network addresses for the new pod IP, checks recorded LSM labels, builds CRIU options
AppArmor or SELinux profile mismatch; mount or cgroup layout CRIU cannot express
applying rootfs diff
extracts the captured rootfs diff over the placeholder root
image mismatch; read-only root; tar permission error
preparing GPU restore
CUDA job file, GPU device mounts, opens the CUDA tools before CRIU swaps the mount namespace
multi-GPU checkpoint with no CUDA job file; device paths not visible; bundle mount gone after a placeholder restart
restoring with CRIU
clears sentinels, mounts securityfs, runs the CRIU restore, reads the restored process table
missing file or socket; port taken; resource CRIU cannot recreate
restoring CUDA state
maps checkpointed PIDs to restored ones, restores GPU mounts and GPU memory, runs the cuinterpose restore for multi-GPU workloads
PIDs not found in the restored tree; device map mismatch; driver or PageBroker refused; cuinterpose restore failed
running nsrestore stays for failures that never reach those phases or end from outside: nsenter could not start the binary, nsrestore was killed, or an older nsrestore image that sends no step.
nsrestore's JSON result carries the step next to the error. The agent rebuilds the step from it and drops the while <step>: prefix the text already carries, so the step is not doubled.
The restore flow wraps with running nsrestore only when the error names no step. A launch failure, a kill, or an nsrestore on a node whose agent pod has not rolled yet reads exactly as before, so an upgrade in progress behaves as today.
The guide's running nsrestore entry keeps the launch and external endings, and six entries follow it, one per inner step. The drift check enforces them.
Before:
main: while running nsrestore: rootfs diff failed: tar extract failed: exit status 2: tar: ...
After:
main: while applying rootfs diff: rootfs diff failed: tar extract failed: exit status 2: tar: ...
Surfacing only. No flow changes: nsrestore is launched, waited for, aborted and cleaned up exactly as before, and no condition reason changes.
go test ./... for the agent module on Linux in the golang:1.27.3 container: all packages pass.
New tests: an inner step reported by nsrestore reaches the restore result unchanged and is not prefixed again; an unnamed nsrestore failure still gets running nsrestore; the step is rebuilt from the JSON result with and without the prefix in the text, and the timeout suffix is kept after it; failStepUnlessNamed leaves a named error alone and nil nil.
make verify-troubleshooting-steps passes with the six new entries and fails without them.
golangci-lint with the agent config, cross-compiled for Linux: clean.
Special notes for your reviewer:
Follow-up to the step-error stack, stacked on the troubleshooting guide PR because the guide entries build on its rewrite and drift check. Two placements to glance at: the CUDA job-file checks at the top of the in-namespace restore report under preparing GPU restore rather than the manifest step, and reading the restored process table reports under restoring with CRIU since it inspects what CRIU produced.

Bug Fixes
Restore failures now identify the stage where they occurred in JSON results and error messages. Existing stage labels are preserved without duplication, making diagnostics clearer.
Failures without a reported stage continue to be attributed to the overall restore operation.
Documentation
Expanded troubleshooting guidance with stage-specific causes and diagnostic checks, including failures that occur before an individual stage is reported or when restore ends externally.

Walkthrough
The in-namespace restore path now assigns failures to specific restore stages. The nsrestore JSON result includes the stage, and the outer restore path preserves it or assigns a fallback. Troubleshooting documentation describes the stages and diagnostic checks.

Summary
Assign and document inner restore stages agent/internal/executor/nsrestore.go, agent/internal/executor/step.go, docs/operations/troubleshooting.md
In-namespace failures are assigned to manifest reading, CRIU preparation, rootfs-diff application, GPU preparation, CRIU restore, or CUDA restore. Troubleshooting documentation describes these stages and related diagnostic checks.
Carry step labels across the nsrestore boundary agent/cmd/nsrestore/main.go, agent/internal/executor/nsrestore_output.go, agent/internal/executor/restore.go, agent/internal/executor/*_test.go
The JSON result includes the failure step. The outer restore path reconstructs named errors and uses StepRunNSRestore when no step is reported. Tests cover step preservation, fallback attribution, and timeout suffixes.

Thanks. Splitting running nsrestore into six steps makes these failures much easier to find, and the drift check is a good guard. This review covers the documentation and the step names only. I checked the six entries against the code they describe.
I would fix the three accuracy comments (preparing GPU restore, restoring CUDA state and restoring with CRIU) before merge, since each would send a reader to the wrong place. The rest are suggestions.
Two points that apply to the whole stack are on #588: the missing CHANGELOG entry, and the vocabulary of the step names.

Preserve the inner step for deferred GPU-mount cleanup.
If the restore succeeds, gpuMounts.Close(true) can still return an error. The deferred code joins that error without a step, so the CLI omits step and the outer restore reports running nsrestore. Use StepRestoreCUDA for committed cleanup and StepPrepareGPURestore for rollback cleanup. No single existing step accurately covers both paths.

Update the deferred GPU-mount cleanup around gpuMounts.Close to preserve the
failure step: use StepRestoreCUDA when gpuMountsCommitted is true and
StepPrepareGPURestore otherwise. Wrap the cleanup error with failStep using the
selected step before joining it into retErr.

Every failure nsrestore reported arrived under one step, "running
nsrestore", though the rootfs diff, the CRIU restore, the CUDA restore and
the LSM setup are where most restore failures happen. nsrestore now wraps
each of its phases with one of six steps and sends the step next to the
error in its JSON result. The agent rebuilds the step from the result and
only falls back to "running nsrestore" when none was sent, so a launch
failure, a kill, or an nsrestore from an older image reads as before.
The guide's "running nsrestore" entry keeps the launch and external
endings, and six entries follow it, one per inner step.

The step read "reading checkpoint manifest inside the placeholder", which
differs from the host-side manifest step only by location. What differs
is that it checks the staged copy and the PageBroker pairing, and a
failure means the staged checkpoint is not the one the agent validated,
so the step now says "checking the staged checkpoint".

The GPU restore entry listed a GPU count mismatch, which the step never
checks; its one failure is a multi-GPU checkpoint with no CUDA job file,
and the message names the fix. The CUDA entry said the cuinterpose
coordinator is released; it runs the cuinterpose restore that rebuilds
shared GPU memory, and that failure is now a listed cause. The CRIU entry
said every cause is CRIU's last log line; the step also reports the mount
and sentinel preparation and the process table read, which name their
operation and leave nothing in restore.log.
The entries open with one or two sentences instead of a tour of nsrestore,
and the fallback note names the checkable case: a node whose agent pod has
not rolled yet during an upgrade.
