Mark transaction cleanup errors agent/internal/executor/checkpoint.go |
Adds helpers to mark and detect cleanup errors. Both checkpoint abort paths mark PageBroker abort errors before joining them with the existing error. |
Classify capture errors agent/internal/controller/capture_failure.go, agent/internal/controller/capture_failure_test.go, agent/internal/pagebroker/errors.go |
Adds capture failure reasons and retryability classification for deadline, PageBroker, and other errors. Cleanup failures do not determine classification when another failure is present. Adds a PageBroker failure constructor and tests classification, including wrapped and joined errors. |
Use classified reasons in checkpoint status agent/internal/controller/podsnapshotcontent.go, agent/internal/controller/podsnapshotcontent_test.go |
runCheckpoint uses the classified failure reason. Tests check the named failure and timeout reasons. |

Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only agent Go source and tests. The authoritative diff contains no kubebuilder RBAC markers and no Helm RBAC manifests or wildcard verbs/resources. Existing RBAC markers in operator controllers use explicit verbs and resources, with no '*' grants.

- Around line 39-57: Update classifyCaptureFailure to classify the capture or
dump error before any cleanup error in the executor’s joined error, so an Abort
failure cannot override the capture failure reason. Keep the complete joined
error available for logging and status details.

so CheckpointTimeout, StagingUnavailable, StagedDataLost, and BrokerRejected
remain their specific reasons in SnapshotJobConditionCaptured=False instead of
being mapped to ReasonCaptureFailed; preserve the existing Failed=True behavior.

Every dump failure recorded CheckpointFailed, so an operator could not tell a node momentarily out of staging from a request the broker will never accept, and nothing could tell whether another attempt would help. classifyCaptureFailure decides both from the broker's typed failure code: StagingUnavailable for staging refused under contention, BrokerRejected for a request a retry cannot change, StagedDataLost for a transaction the broker no longer holds, and CheckpointTimeout for an exhausted deadline. Anything it cannot place stays CheckpointFailed and non-retryable. The retryable half is what SNEP-394's retry loop will consume; nothing reads it yet. The executor joins a failed Abort onto the error it is reporting. When the dump itself failed without a broker code — a CRIU failure, say — the Abort's code was the only one in the tree, so a cleanup reporting TRANSACTION_NOT_FOUND made the capture read as StagedDataLost. Classify the first branch of the join instead. errors.Join drops nils, so that is the real cause even when the cleanup is the only failure. classifyCaptureFailure took the first branch of the executor's join, which is the capture cause only because both join sites happen to pass it first. Nothing in either package said so, and writing the arguments the other way round would have silently made a failed Abort decide why the capture failed. The executor now marks a cleanup failure, and the classifier skips marked branches wherever they sit. When every branch is cleanup, the cleanup is the cause — which was previously true only because errors.Join drops nils. What type of PR is this?
What this PR does / why we need it
Every failed dump recorded the same reason,
CheckpointFailed. An operator could not tell a node momentarily out of staging from a request the broker will never accept, and nothing in the code could tell whether another attempt would help — which SNEP-394's retry has to know.classifyCaptureFailuredecides both from the broker's typed failure code:StagingUnavailableCheckpointFailedBrokerRejectedStagedDataLostCheckpointTimeoutCheckpointFailedAnything it cannot place stays
CheckpointFailedand non-retryable, so an unrecognised failure never becomes a retry. The retryable half is what the retry loop will consume; nothing reads it yet. The classifier deliberately does not infer which step failed, so it never concludes that a dump completed — a caller that knows the step can narrow it further.

Part of #632
How was this tested?
CheckpointTimeoutrather thanCheckpointFailed. That is the intended behaviour change, and the test was updated rather than the classifier weakened.make linux-testpasses across all agent packages;golangci-lintclean.Special notes for your reviewer
NewFailureErroris added to the pagebroker package so callers outside it can construct the classifications they handle; its fields are unexported and there was no constructor. This touches the one line in
runCheckpointthat picks the reason, so it will conflict trivially with #682 if that lands first.Distinguishing staging refused from image too large is the other half of this story and lands separately — both reach the agent as the same broker error only when the write has already started.
