What this PR does / why we need it

Staging is a memory-backed emptyDir, and CRIU writes the image into it from the agent's own container, so those pages count against the agent's cgroup. #640 capped the volume so the write fails with ENOSPC instead of the agent being OOM-killed. This adds the other half SNEP-394 asks for: refuse the capture before anything is suspended when the image provably cannot fit.

Without it, an oversized capture suspends the workload, writes until the volume is full, and fails — having disturbed the workload for nothing. With retry, it would do that repeatedly.

  • The agent receives the staging path it already mounts (/pagebroker/staging) through its config.
  • Before the capture, it measures the volume (statfs) and the workload, and fails the work order as ImageTooLarge with the shortfall when the estimate exceeds what is available.

The estimate sums the process tree's resident memory, which is a lower bound — CRIU writes more than RSS, and the total moves while the workload runs. So it can establish that an image cannot possibly fit, never that it will. Everything it cannot measure lets the capture through: no staging path configured, a path it cannot stat, a tree it cannot read. A capture that passes can still run out of room, which arrives later as ENOSPC.

Which issue(s) this PR addresses

Part of #632

How was this tested?

  • The estimate is tested for unit conversion (VmRSS is kB), for exact field matching so VmHWM is not read as VmRSS, for kernel threads with no VmRSS contributing zero rather than erroring, and for a malformed value being rejected rather than silently read as zero — a guard that quietly estimates zero is a guard that never fires.
  • The guard is asserted to let a capture through for every case it cannot measure, and not to refuse an ordinary capture on a measurable node.
  • make linux-test passes across all agent packages; chart renders and its 69 unit tests pass; golangci-lint clean across all three modules.

Special notes for your reviewer

stagingPath is added to the agent config rather than derived from the control socket's directory, so the two can move independently. An empty value turns the check off, which is what a config predating this field does — an agent upgraded ahead of its ConfigMap keeps working.

The other half of the SNEP's "which kind of shortage?" — telling staging refused before any write (retryable) from ENOSPC while writing (terminal) — depends on the failure classification in #685 and follows there.

Does this PR introduce an API change?

The agent now refuses a capture whose image provably cannot fit in the node's staging volume, failing it as ImageTooLarge before the workload is suspended.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a configurable staging path for snapshot images.
    • Before creating a checkpoint, the system estimates image size and checks available staging capacity. If capacity is insufficient, the snapshot is marked as failed and checkpoint creation is skipped.
    • Capacity checks are skipped when the staging path is unset or capacity cannot be measured.

Walkthrough

The change adds staging-path configuration and estimates available staging capacity against container process RSS before checkpoint execution. A positive shortfall marks the content as failed and skips the checkpoint. An unset path or measurement error allows staging to continue.

Staging Capacity Guard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Staging path and capacity measurement
agent/internal/types/config.go, charts/snapshot/templates/configmap.yaml, agent/internal/runtime/staging.go, agent/internal/runtime/staging_test.go
The PageBroker configuration includes a staging path. Runtime helpers measure available bytes, estimate image size from process RSS, and calculate capacity shortfall. Tests cover these helpers.
Pre-checkpoint capacity enforcement
agent/internal/controller/staging_guard.go, agent/internal/controller/podsnapshotcontent.go, agent/internal/controller/staging_guard_test.go
The controller checks capacity before running a checkpoint. A positive shortfall marks content failed and prevents checkpoint execution. Unset paths and measurement errors skip the check. Tests cover both skip cases.

The new staging guard can permanently fail a capture that would have succeeded. This happens when another capture temporarily holds staging space, or when the process-memory estimate overstates the image size. Both cases should be fixed before merge, or the refusal narrowed so it only fires when the image provably cannot fit.

Test the insufficient-capacity decision.

These tests only assert that the guard permits capture. Add a controlled case in which the estimate exceeds available staging space. Assert that checkStagingCapacity refuses it, then test that the capture path records ImageTooLarge before checkpointing. The current measurable-path test cannot detect a guard that always returns nil.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Do not use total VmRSS as proof that the image cannot fit.

When a workload has large resident file-backed mappings, VmRSS counts pages that CRIU does not dump if they remain in sync with the file. Summing process RSS can also count shared pages more than once. Therefore, a capture whose image fits can exceed available in this estimate and receive a terminal ImageTooLarge failure. Use an estimate that is demonstrably a lower bound on bytes written, or do not make this refusal from RSS alone. (kernel.org)

is "staging" is the right name for this file? it also estimate image size, right? maybe some of it can go in process.go? though that's a big file as it is, so maybe just a rename?

Staging is a memory-backed emptyDir, and CRIU writes the image into it
from the agent's own container. A capture larger than the volume fills it
and takes every other capture and restore on the node with it.

The agent now measures the volume and the workload before suspending
anything, and refuses the capture as ImageTooLarge when the image
provably cannot fit, reporting the shortfall.

The estimate sums resident memory, which is a lower bound: CRIU writes
more than RSS and the total moves while the workload runs. So it can
establish that an image cannot possibly fit, never that it will, and
anything it cannot measure lets the capture through.
