Closes: #2050

Description

Enforcement-only PR: turns the mutation gate's directive policy from "hygiene + advisory" into a hard prohibition. It does not remove the 38 directives already on main — that moves to a dedicated cleanup PR with per-line mutation-repro evidence (see issue plan).

  • scripts/stryker-diff.mjs: validateDisableDirectives (shape check, advisory-only) is replaced by assertNoDisableDirectives — any // Stryker disable / // Stryker enable comment in a touched mutation-tested file now throws, failing the mutation-diff job through the same enforcement path as the executable-line cap.
  • CI job-summary guidance rewritten: kill mutants with focused tests; genuinely equivalent mutants are argued in the PR body and become narrow gate-config exclusions (e.g. excludedPaths) at maintainer discretion.
  • Workflow step renamed to "Enforce executable-line scope and directive policy, run advisory mutation testing" (asserted by the gate test suite).
  • Docs: new "Stryker Suppression Comments" section in AGENTS.md; one bullet in CONTRIBUTING.md → Writing Code Guidelines.

Note: because the check runs on every line of each touched mutation-tested file, any PR that touches a file still carrying legacy directives must remove them — the cleanup is self-enforcing going forward, and the dedicated cleanup PR handles the 9 currently-dirty files with evidence.

Test Procedure

  • node --test scripts/stryker-diff.test.mjs → 44/44 pass, including the new prohibition matrix (well-formed directive, all, reason-less, disable start/end, enable, indented form — all rejected; clean sources accepted; buildManifest fails on a directive in a mutation-tested file).
  • Branch base is current upstream/main; gate test suite re-run on that base.

Pre-Submission Checklist

  • Issue Linked: This PR is linked to an approved GitHub Issue (see "Related GitHub Issue" above).
  • Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (one major feature/fix per PR).
  • Self-Review: I have performed a thorough self-review of my code.
  • Testing: New and/or updated tests have been added to cover my changes (if applicable).
  • Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): N/A — no UI changes.
  • Documentation Impact: Contributor/agent policy docs (AGENTS.md, CONTRIBUTING.md) updated in this PR.
  • Contribution Guidelines: I have read and agree to the Contributor Guidelines.

Documentation Updates

  • No user-facing documentation updates are required. (Contributor-facing policy docs are updated in-repo.)

Additional Notes

Mutation results (survived mutants) stay advisory as before — this PR only hardens the directive policy and the existing executable-line scope enforcement.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Developer Workflow

    • Mutation-testing checks now reject Stryker suppression comments in mutation-tested files, including both disable and enable directives. Directive-like text in strings, template text, or JSX text is not treated as a suppression comment.
    • Address surviving or uncovered mutants with focused tests. Explain equivalent mutants in the pull request for maintainer review, and remove existing suppression comments when updating affected files.
  • Documentation

    • Contributor guidance reflects the suppression policy and updated mutation-testing checks.

The changed-code mutation gate now fails when a checked mutation-tested source line contains a Stryker suppression comment. The workflow label, tests, and contributor guidance describe the directive policy.

The mutation gate correctly rejects legacy Stryker directives in touched files. A regression test for a directive on an unchanged line is recommended; no current behavior defect blocks merging.

Explanation

Issue #2050 requires hard rejection of Stryker suppression comments in touched mutation-tested files, CI guidance and workflow updates, and contributor policy updates. assertNoDisableDirectives detects disable and enable comments from parsed comment ranges. buildManifest checks all source lines and propagates violations. Tests cover directive forms, strings, templates, JSX, manifest failure, and clean sources. The workflow, AGENTS.md, and CONTRIBUTING.md changes match the issue. Existing directives remain for the separate cleanup work, as required. Mutation results remain advisory.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #2050. The implementation and tests enforce the directive policy. The workflow and documentation explain the same policy. The PR does not remove legacy directives or change unrelated production behavior.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path creates a security-boundary failure. The workflow change only renames a step, keeps contents: read, pinned actions, persist-credentials: false, and quoted SHA arguments. scripts/stryker-diff.mjs parses source comments and raises on matching Stryker directives; it does not execute source or interpolate source content into shell commands. The changed documentation and tests add no runtime behavior. No changed path leaks secrets or PII, trusts executable unvalidated input, or bypasses an approval or allowlist control.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes CI naming, documentation, directive parsing, manifest validation, and tests. The changed implementation only reads source and throws on suppression comments; it does not add or alter state writes, storage updates, rollback logic, or default propagation. The existing summary append and report operations are unchanged.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path exists. The pull request changes directive parsing, manifest validation, tests, documentation, and a workflow step name. The changed assertNoDisableDirectives path only traverses TypeScript AST tokens and throws on matching comments; it does not create, retain, or duplicate listeners, watchers, timers, tasks, providers, or other resources. The workflow execution and existing synchronous child-process calls are unchanged.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes the linked issue, implementation details, test procedure, checklist, documentation impact, and additional notes. It omits the template's Get in Touch section, but the required change and validation details are complete.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The previous coverage failure remains. assertNoDisableDirectives only throws when a directive’s comment-start line is present in lineNumbers (scripts/stryker-diff.mjs:168-183). The changed tests cover throwing cases with the directive line selected, plus clean sources, but no case places a directive on line 1 while passing new Set([2]). The manifest test uses an added file, so buildManifest supplies every source line and does not cover the modified-file path where a directive is outside the selected diff lines.

Resolution

Add a focused helper test with a directive on line 1 and new Set([2]) that asserts no throw. Add a buildManifest integration test for a modified mutation-tested file whose diff changes a different line, and assert that the legacy directive still causes the manifest to throw because the manifest policy scans all source lines.

Thanks for contributing. This comment tracks the review sequence and the next action.

Current step: Address maintainer or CODEOWNER feedback, push an update, then re-request review from the blocking maintainer.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.

Codecov Report

✅ All modified and coverable lines are covered by tests.

📢 Thoughts on this report? Let us know!

The changed-code mutation gate already runs on every PR, but its directive
policy allowed suppressions and reported malformed ones only as advisories,
so `// Stryker disable next-line ...` annotations kept accumulating in
production source (38 directives across 9 files on main).

- Replace the directive hygiene check with assertNoDisableDirectives: any
  `// Stryker disable`/`// Stryker enable` comment in a touched
mutation-tested file now fails the mutation-diff gate outright.
- Update the CI summary guidance, the workflow step name, and the
  AGENTS.md / CONTRIBUTING.md policies: kill mutants with focused tests;
genuinely equivalent mutants are argued in the PR body and become narrow
  gate-config exclusions at maintainer discretion.

The 38 directives already on main are NOT removed here: their removal moves
to a dedicated cleanup PR carrying per-line mutation-repro evidence (kill
tests where killable, narrow gate-config exclusions where equivalent).

Tests: node --test scripts/stryker-diff.test.mjs (44/44).

CodeRabbit: a raw ts.createScanner loop never resumes the template lexical
goal after an interpolation, so text inside a template literal could be
misclassified as a comment (false failure) and a directive following a
completed template could be swallowed (missed failure). Collect leading and

…ked exclusions

The 38 suppression directives on main are removed. Every previously-suppressed
line was re-exposed to Stryker first (mutation repro at the Zoo-Code-Org#2051 branch head:
100 mutants over the 38 lines). 65 are killed by existing tests - the
directives were unnecessary - and the 33 survivors are genuinely equivalent;
they are accepted centrally in scripts/stryker-equivalences.json (26
file+line+mutator entries) instead of as in-source comments.

- Remove 42 directive comment lines from 9 files (comment-only diff).
- Add scripts/stryker-equivalences.json with the equivalence argument per entry.
- stryker-diff.mjs: applyEquivalences() drops accepted equivalents from the
blocking set, the summary gains an Equivalent column, and registry entries
whose file is under test but whose mutant is gone surface as a stale-entry
advisory so the registry cannot rot silently.

Evidence per file (mutants over the previously-suppressed lines): lm-studio
10/10 killed; qwen-code 10/10 killed; webviewMessageHandler 2/2 killed;
pathUtils 9 survivors (defensive bounds, fail-closed guards); abort-signal 2
(once flag unobservable); NativeToolCallParser 2 (GC-only); openai 2 (&& vs
?? via parameter default); openai-codex 2 (abort microtask windows); Task.ts
16 survivors (unreachable guards on the raw-chunk pipeline).

Tests: node --test scripts/stryker-diff.test.mjs (51/51).

The changed test at scripts/stryker-diff.test.mjs:302-314 covers only an added file. The direct helper tests also include the directive line in the checked set. Add a modified-file case with a directive on an unchanged line. Otherwise, the suite can miss a regression that limits rejection to changed lines.

## Stryker Suppression Comments

Do not add Stryker suppression comments (`// Stryker disable ...`, `// Stryker enable ...`) to source files. The changed-code mutation gate (`scripts/stryker-diff.mjs`, run by the `mutation-diff` CI job) fails any pull request that introduces them in mutation-tested files.

## Stryker Suppression Comments

- Suppressions left by earlier revisions are removed when their file is touched; do not reintroduce them.

I'm not sure I want to take this approach just yet - there are some valid reasons for disabling Stryker. If anything the approach would be to make the report generated by Stryker more accessible for agents, because as it stands agents might not be aware of the findings, unless they navigate into the annotations, and then agents might not even know they can download the report as an artifact on the ci stryker job - I'm leaning towards closing this PR and approaching this differently.
