Understanding the NRD license

Hi, I have a related question. I’m building a browser-based WebGPU app and was impressed by NRD’s denoising quality. Since I couldn’t integrate it directly into the browser, I ported NRD’s RELAX shaders to WGSL and the CPU library to WebAssembly.

Is this permitted, including commercial use and serving the WGSL source to users’ browsers, provided I retain NVIDIA’s license and notices?

@dzhdanNV the license has this clause it in. I was thinking of trying to integrate this in q2rtx.

(e) You may not use the SDK in any manner that would cause it to become subject
to an open source software license. As examples, licenses that require as a
condition of use, modification, and/or distribution that the SDK be: (i)
disclosed or distributed in source code form; (ii) licensed for the purpose of
making derivative works; or (iii) redistributable at no charge.

gpl-v2 license is a problem given the clause: https://github.com/nvidia/q2rtx

Based on the current terms of the RTX SDK EULA, redistributing the NRD shader source as WGSL to users' browser would be in violation and is not permitted. However, we see value in this use case and appreciate you bringing it to our attention. Stay tuned for future updates to our EULA terms to accommodate more use cases involving distributing WGSL and WebAssembly source.

I don't know is it a suitable solution but as a workaround you could try shaders in SPIRV binary form.

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, SPIR-V isn’t currently supported directly by WebGPU in browsers, so it may not work for our use case.

any idea if the license @dzhdanNV could be more permissive to other copy left licenses.

Unfortunately, I can't comment on this. I have delivered the problem to the stakeholders, it will take time to update the license. My estimate is months, not weeks. But I really hope it happens early. Apologies in advance.
