feat: discovery — lyrics from LRCLIB, listening statistics, mixes and local similar songs (RFC-024) - #334
RFC-024 and its implementation, in one PR: four discovery features built from what the server already holds, plus one narrow, optional outbound source.
Lyrics from LRCLIB, opt-in.WAVEFLOW_LYRICS_PROVIDERS=lrclib turns it on. It is empty by default, and it is a separate switch from WAVEFLOW_METADATA_PROVIDERS. A track with no lyrics of its own (no embedded or sidecar sheet with words in it, no upload) is looked up on demand, never at scan time, matched on artist, title, album and duration. The sheet is served:
on the native lyrics route and its download, with source: "lrclib";
on getLyricsBySongId, and on getLyrics as a fallback, in the frozen structuredLyrics shape with no new attribute;
in the web client, which credits it ("Lyrics from LRCLIB").
totals: listens, estimated listening time, and distinct tracks, albums and artists;
top tracks, albums, artists and genres;
a per-day or per-month timeline;
the period's first and last listen.
A new Statistics page shows them in the web client.
Mixes from local data only.GET /api/v2/mixes and GET /api/v2/mixes/{mix_id} serve most played, never played, forgotten favourites, recently added, and the account's top genres and decades. A mix is deterministic per account and per day, capped per artist, and interleaved. The home page shows them as a shelf, with a page per mix. They are not on Subsonic (RFC decision 7 says why).
Local fallback for similar songs.getSimilarSongs, getSimilarSongs2 and the new GET /api/v2/similar-songs/{id} take a configured provider's neighbours first. When the provider names none the caller can see, or when no provider is configured (the default), they use the catalogue's own neighbours: co-credits, shared genres, a close era, and the caller's own co-listening.
Decisions (RFC-024)
D1. LRCLIB has its own ordered list, empty by default. A lyrics lookup sends a title, an album and a duration at play time, which is a different consent from asking about an artist's name. The client is the server's own, built by src/outbound.rs (no redirect, no proxy from the environment). It is not waveflow_core::metadata::lrclib, which follows redirects and reads unbounded bodies. The body is capped at 1 MiB locally. The User-Agent is WaveFlowServer/<version> (https://github.com/InstaZDLL/waveflow-server), as LRCLIB asks.
D2. The file and the uploads always win; LRCLIB only fills an empty answer. A match more than 2 s off the track's duration is a miss.
D3. Lookups are made on demand, and the answering path waits for them at most 4 s. This is a deliberate, argued departure from RFC-011 D6: lyrics are asked once per listen. The rest of D6 holds:
the writer gate is taken only after the network I/O;
one request per key is in flight;
requests are rate-limited, with at most 64 in flight;
nothing runs at scan time.
D4. An instance-wide cache, lyrics_lookup (migration 20261027020000), keyed by a BLAKE3 digest of what was sent.
A hit is kept 30 days, a miss 7 days, an instrumental 30 days.
An unreached lookup writes nothing.
A stale row is served while it refreshes.
Tenancy is checked before the key is computed.
D5. The Subsonic shape is unchanged, and uploads stay off the façade (RFC-012). With the variable empty, no surface changes.
D6. Statistics are per account, built from play_event rows with submission=1.
Every query binds the user id first, joins through library_member with pe.user_id = m.user_id, and reads available tracks only.
Artists and genres are grouped by canonical name.
Listening time is labelled an estimate.
D7. Mixes:
candidates come from a bounded pool of 2,000; random pools start at a seeded pivot in the id space;
they are ordered by a seeded BLAKE3 hash, capped at max(2, size/10) per artist, interleaved, and read through the shared song projection;
an empty mix answers 404.
They are not on Subsonic: virtual playlists would mean writable UUID playlists that change daily, and the getAlbumList2 types are a closed set.
D8. Scored local neighbours (co-credit, genre, an era bonus, co-listen), top 20, feed the existing balanced draw. This is an observable wire change on a frozen method: with no provider, both similar-songs methods now answer songs instead of {}. The RFC justifies it. It is recorded in docs/subsonic-compatibility.md and as an amendment to RFC-002, with an item to re-check in the next client campaign.
cargo test --all-features (full): every target green, 617 tests, 0 failures.
New target tests/discovery.rs, 19 tests, registered in Cargo.toml. Every LRCLIB test runs against a fake on loopback; the suite never reaches lrclib.net. Covered:
LRCLIB:
off means no request;
one request, credited, then cached, and the download serves .lrc;
files and uploads win on both surfaces;
no source on the façade, at the service and on the wire, and the getLyrics fallback;
the miss and instrumental TTLs;
a 503, a 302 (not followed) and a 2 MiB answer write nothing and are asked again;
concurrent asks make one request;
the wait is bounded, and a slow answer lands for the next listen;
a stale row is served while it refreshes;
another account's track is 404 and never looked up.
Statistics: only the caller's submissions count, on tracks still reached (leaving a library takes them out); the route validates its parameters.
local neighbours by genre, by co-credit and by co-listening;
a foreign artist never takes a neighbour's place;
the façade and the native route both answer without a provider.
Updated tests:
enrichment.rs: count_absent_yields_at_most_fifty now expects the local draw with no provider, and the_artist_s_own_tracks_are_in_the_draw strips the shared genre so it still proves its point.
subsonic_browse.rs: the similar-songs methods now draw songs.
Unit tests:
LRCLIB: judging a record, the duration tolerance, key folding, the User-Agent, sheet choice;
statistics: period starts, timeline filling, query bounds;
mixes: variety, seeding, mix ids;
neighbours: the score caps.
Webapp:
bun --cwd=webapp install and bun --cwd=webapp run build, on a fresh dist;
biome: no new diagnostics;
vitest: 238 passed, with the new lib/mixes.test.ts;
full Playwright: 292 passed, 18 skipped (project-specific), on port 4791. WAVEFLOW_E2E_PORT was added so worktrees do not reuse each other's preview.
The e2e mocks answer the new routes. New specs cover:
the shelf: its request is scoped to the library, it plays, it opens the mix page, and it hides while filtering;
no shelf when nothing is offered;
a mix that is gone;
the statistics page and its periods;
light-theme axe on the shelf and the statistics page;
the LRCLIB credit, and its absence.
The mobile sheet count was updated for the new Statistics entry.
Inversions
For each one, the fix was reverted, its test run and seen to fail for its own reason, then restored. Restores rewrite the file and bump its mtime, so cargo rebuilds; every run below compiled the inverted source. git diff was clean afterwards.

Two inversions passed at first: the façade source and the neighbour tenancy. Each is protected by a second layer (the Subsonic node builder, and the membership filter in the draw). Both tests were strengthened so each layer is proved on its own, and both inversions now fail.
CodeRabbit fixes: doc comment placement (6527f4b); duration checked before an instrumental verdict (2e963e4); statistics and mixes count listens per track before joining (303b4c3; on 10,000 tracks and 50,000 listens, debug build: list_mixes 2.2–3.3 s → 0.85–1.0 s, statistics 30d 7.3 s → 0.95 s); an alert when a mix cannot be opened (360d19e).
Gates after both merges: fmt and clippy clean, cargo test --all-features 627 tests and 0 failures, vitest 244/244, Playwright 310 passed and 18 skipped on a fresh build.
Deferred
Mixes on Subsonic (an open question in the RFC).
Eviction of lyrics_lookup.
Uploaded lyrics stay off Subsonic, per RFC-012.
Expected merge conflicts, all additive: src/config.rs, webapp/src/state/i18n.tsx, webapp/src/main.tsx, docs/operations.md, docs/privacy.md, webapp/playwright.config.ts (another branch also adds WAVEFLOW_E2E_PORT), and the e2e spec.

Walkthrough
Statistiques, mixes et chansons similaires côté serveur src/services/statistics.rs, src/services/mixes.rs, src/services/local_similar.rs, src/services/artist_enrichment.rs, src/services/mod.rs, src/api/discovery.rs, src/api/mod.rs, src/lib.rs, tests/discovery.rs, tests/enrichment.rs, tests/subsonic_browse.rs

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 377dc
Statistics and mixes are cached per session and the cache is cleared on every sign-in, sign-out and session expiry, so one account cannot see another's data. The other earlier concerns (day rollover and mix-open errors) have been fixed. No merge-blocking risk was found in the reviewed changes.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 377dc
The new external lookup is disabled by default and has bounded requests. The inspected discovery and lyrics paths retain authentication and account-access checks. No introduced security defect was established, but deployment rollback and some verification coverage remain incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — When the operator enables lyrics lookup, eligible requests across all accounts can disclose recording metadata, request timing, and the server's network address to LRCLIB. There is no per-account opt-in; this account-wide scope is explicitly documented. The request does not attach an account credential.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The supplied cross-account query-cache candidate is not substantiated by the inspected lifecycle. Although discovery query keys omit account identity, the shared QueryClient is cleared on login, logout, and session expiry. This existing protection remains in place; exact installed-library late-response behavior was not independently verified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Discovery handlers derive identity from authenticated read access rather than caller-selected account parameters. Lyrics resolution checks track membership before consulting the shared provider cache. Similar-song seed resolution and final song projection retain caller-scoped access checks.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The outbound failure boundary includes pacing, at most 64 pending or running lookups, a four-second caller wait, a configured request timeout, and a one-MiB response ceiling. Transport, timeout, decoding, and non-404 HTTP failures do not overwrite cached answers with misses, allowing later recovery.

keeping both sides: the lyrics and podcast settings side by side in config,
both runtimes and both export lists in services, both test targets, both
operations sections, both sets of strings and styles, and the mobile sheet
count raised to seventeen for Statistics and Podcasts.

Summary
RFC-024 and its implementation, in one PR: four discovery features built from what the server already holds, plus one narrow, optional outbound source.
Lyrics from LRCLIB, opt-in.
WAVEFLOW_LYRICS_PROVIDERS=lrclibturns it on. It is empty by default, and it is a separate switch fromWAVEFLOW_METADATA_PROVIDERS. A track with no lyrics of its own (no embedded or sidecar sheet with words in it, no upload) is looked up on demand, never at scan time, matched on artist, title, album and duration. The sheet is served:source: "lrclib";getLyricsBySongId, and ongetLyricsas a fallback, in the frozenstructuredLyricsshape with no new attribute;Statistics.
GET /api/v2/stats?period=7d|30d|365d|all&utc_offset_minutes=&limit=answers:A new Statistics page shows them in the web client.
Mixes from local data only.
GET /api/v2/mixesandGET /api/v2/mixes/{mix_id}serve most played, never played, forgotten favourites, recently added, and the account's top genres and decades. A mix is deterministic per account and per day, capped per artist, and interleaved. The home page shows them as a shelf, with a page per mix. They are not on Subsonic (RFC decision 7 says why).Local fallback for similar songs.
getSimilarSongs,getSimilarSongs2and the newGET /api/v2/similar-songs/{id}take a configured provider's neighbours first. When the provider names none the caller can see, or when no provider is configured (the default), they use the catalogue's own neighbours: co-credits, shared genres, a close era, and the caller's own co-listening.Decisions (RFC-024)
D1. LRCLIB has its own ordered list, empty by default. A lyrics lookup sends a title, an album and a duration at play time, which is a different consent from asking about an artist's name. The client is the server's own, built by
src/outbound.rs(no redirect, no proxy from the environment). It is notwaveflow_core::metadata::lrclib, which follows redirects and reads unbounded bodies. The body is capped at 1 MiB locally. The User-Agent isWaveFlowServer/<version> (https://github.com/InstaZDLL/waveflow-server), as LRCLIB asks.D2.
D4. An instance-wide cache,
lyrics_lookup(migration20261027020000), keyed by a BLAKE3 digest of what was sent.D5. The Subsonic shape is unchanged, and uploads stay off the façade (RFC-012). With the variable empty, no surface changes.
D6. Statistics are per account, built from
play_eventrows withsubmission=1.library_memberwithpe.user_id = m.user_id, and reads available tracks only.D7. Mixes:
max(2, size/10)per artist, interleaved, and read through the shared song projection;They are not on Subsonic: virtual playlists would mean writable UUID playlists that change daily, and the
getAlbumList2types are a closed set.D8. Scored local neighbours (co-credit, genre, an era bonus, co-listen), top 20, feed the existing balanced draw. This is an observable wire change on a frozen method: with no provider, both similar-songs methods now answer songs instead of
{}. The RFC justifies it. It is recorded indocs/subsonic-compatibility.mdand as an amendment to RFC-002, with an item to re-check in the next client campaign.Test plan

Inversions
For each one, the fix was reverted, its test run and seen to fail for its own reason, then restored. Restores rewrite the file and bump its mtime, so cargo rebuilds; every run below compiled the inverted source.

After review and merges
mainmerged twice: feat: smart playlists and podcasts (RFC-025) #333 (conflicts resolved by keeping both sides; the mobile sheet now lists 17 entries) and feat: hardening — bounded reads, ffmpeg protocols, embedded api reference, disabled accounts (RFC-023) #332 (no conflict). The LRCLIB client now reads through feat: hardening — bounded reads, ffmpeg protocols, embedded api reference, disabled accounts (RFC-023) #332'soutbound::read_bounded_body, still under its 1 MiB lyrics cap; the size-cap inversion was re-run through it.list_mixes2.2–3.3 s → 0.85–1.0 s, statistics 30d 7.3 s → 0.95 s); an alert when a mix cannot be opened (360d19e).cargo test --all-features627 tests and 0 failures, vitest 244/244, Playwright 310 passed and 18 skipped on a fresh build.Deferred
