Closes #55
Closes #57
Closes #125

One root cause, three reports

The reply language is inferred every turn and never stored, and the persona prompt only said "Always respond in the same language the user writes in", with Spanish as its only worked example:

The fix (prompt text only, 3 lines)

  • The single language-match bullet keeps its exact sentence and adds: judge the language by the user's latest message, never by earlier context or a compaction summary, and never default to Spanish (an English message gets an English reply). It stays one bullet on purpose: the concept-level duplication guard allows exactly one language rule per mode.
  • Neutral mode bans voseo in regular and irregular verbs, with worked tú/usted replacements (ajustas, not ajustás; vives, not vivís; mira, not mirá; haz, not hacé). Do NOT use voseo stays verbatim.
  • The gentleman instruction for Spanish replies ("answer in natural Rioplatense Spanish with voseo") is unchanged.

No new state or setting: a persisted replyLanguage was considered and deferred; it is only worth adding if the stated rule proves insufficient.

Verification

Note: this is a prompt-level fix, so it states the rule the model reads rather than enforcing it in code; #125 could not be reproduced from source alone, and a model factor cannot be fully excluded.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Behavior Updates

    • Both personas now reply in the language of the latest message, rather than relying on earlier context or defaulting to Spanish.
    • Neutral mode avoids voseo and uses tú or usted forms; gentleman mode retains Rioplatense voseo.
  • Documentation

    • Updated persona guidance to reflect the language-selection and neutral-mode rules.

…eo form

The reply language is inferred every turn and never stored, and the
persona prompt only said to reply in the user's language, with Spanish
as its only worked example. Three reports follow from that: an English
user got Spanish replies (#125), a compaction summary could flip the
inferred language (#57), and neutral mode banned only four irregular
voseo verbs, so regular forms like ajustás or vivís leaked (#55).

The single language-match bullet now says to judge the language by the
user's latest message, never by earlier context or a compaction
summary, and never to default to Spanish. Neutral mode bans voseo in
regular and irregular verbs with worked tú/usted replacements. The
Rioplatense voseo instruction for gentleman Spanish replies is
unchanged, and the concept-level duplication guard still sees one
language rule per mode.

Walkthrough

Both persona prompts now use the latest user message to select the reply language. The neutral persona prompt also prohibits regular and irregular voseo and specifies tú/usted forms. Tests and documentation cover these prompt rules.

The prompt changes should stop English users from receiving Spanish replies. However, a user who explicitly asks for a specific reply language may lose that preference when they later write in another language. Consider adjusting the wording before merge; the impact is limited to a prompt edge case.

Explanation

The changed prompt text directly addresses #55, #57, and #125. The new tests verify the prompt rules and the gentleman-mode no-regression behavior. The golden fixture and README reference update document the same prompt changes. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Explanation

#55 is addressed. NEUTRAL_PERSONA_PROMPT now bans regular and irregular voseo and includes four replacement pairs. tests/persona-reply-language.test.ts verifies these rules. #125's reported English-language behavior is addressed by the latest-message rule and the explicit English example. However, #57 requires preserving an explicit language preference as session state across compaction. The PR states that language is inferred every turn and never stored, and its test verifies prompt text only. The prompt does not preserve an earlier explicit preference when later context lacks that preference. #125 also requests configurable language, but the PR adds no setting or persisted replyLanguage.

Resolution

Implement persisted language-preference state for explicit user requests and make compaction recovery use that state instead of only prompt inference. Add the requested language configuration for #125, or document and resolve that requirement before merging. Add runtime tests that cover explicit preference preservation across compaction and configured language behavior.

Preserve explicit language preferences across compaction.

The old prompt did not explicitly preserve a language preference, so this is not a demonstrated regression from existing behavior. However, the new rule can override an explicit preference when a later message uses another language. State that an explicit preference remains active until the user changes it, and use latest-message inference only when no preference exists. Apply this to both persona prompts and add a focused prompt test.

Suggested prompt fix
-Always respond in the same language the user writes in. Judge it by the user's latest message, never by earlier context or a compaction summary, and never default to Spanish: a message in English gets a reply in English.
+Always honor an explicit user language preference until the user changes it, including after compaction. If no preference is active, respond in the language of the user's latest message; do not use earlier context or a compaction summary to infer the fallback language, and never default to Spanish: a message in English gets a reply in English.
