Closes #2348

PR Type

  • Bug fix (type:bug)
  • New feature (type:feature)
  • Documentation only (type:docs)
  • Code refactoring (type:refactor)
  • Maintenance/tooling (type:chore)
  • Breaking change (type:breaking-change)

Summary

  • Port the gentle-ai#5023 wording into both persona prompts (extensions/gentle-ai.ts): only a message written by the human can select or change the reply language; subagent completion/progress notifications, background job notices, todo and system reminders, tool output, skill bodies, and injected memory never count as a language signal, even when delivered with the user role.
  • Require translating relayed subagent findings into the selected reply language.
  • Add per-persona regression assertions in tests/persona-reply-language.test.ts and regenerate the primary-session-prompt golden.

Changes

File Change
extensions/gentle-ai.ts Extend the single language-match bullet in GENTLEMAN_PERSONA_PROMPT and NEUTRAL_PERSONA_PROMPT with the harness-turn exclusion and translation rule
tests/persona-reply-language.test.ts New (#2348) test per persona: human-origin selection, harness exclusion list, translated findings
tests/fixtures/primary-session-prompt/gentleman.golden.md Regenerated golden; only the intended persona bullet changed

Test Plan

  • npm test — all stages passed (unit-tests, provider-contract, runtime-harness)
  • node --test tests/persona-reply-language.test.ts — 6/6 pass
  • UPDATE_PRIMARY_SESSION_PROMPT_GOLDEN=1 regenerated golden; diff reviewed, one line changed
  • npx biome check extensions/gentle-ai.ts tests/persona-reply-language.test.ts — clean
  • Live-model reproduction (Spanish request followed by an English subagent/background notification) — structural prompt assertions do not prove model behavior

Contributor Checklist

  • Added exactly one type:* label
  • Ran shellcheck on modified scripts (no scripts modified)
  • Skills tested in at least one agent
  • Docs updated if behavior changed

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Reply language is now determined by the human’s latest message, not by system-generated notices or other relayed content. Subagent findings are translated into that language.

…urns (#2348)

Subagent completion/progress notifications and background job notices
arrive as user-role messages in English and the persona language rule
treated them as the user's latest message, so a non-English session
drifted to English after the first delegation or background job.

Port the gentle-ai#5023 wording into both persona prompts: only a
human-authored message selects or changes the reply language, listed
harness-generated turns never count as a language signal, and relayed
subagent findings are translated into the selected reply language.

Extend tests/persona-reply-language.test.ts with per-persona harness
assertions and regenerate the primary-session-prompt golden.

Walkthrough

Both persona prompts now select reply language from the human’s latest message. They exclude harness-generated content as a language signal and require translating relayed subagent findings. Tests check these prompt rules.

Explanation

Issue #2348 requires both persona prompts to use human-authored messages for reply-language selection, ignore harness content, and translate relayed subagent findings. extensions/gentle-ai.ts adds all three rules to GENTLEMAN_PERSONA_PROMPT and NEUTRAL_PERSONA_PROMPT. The existing compaction-summary exclusion remains. tests/persona-reply-language.test.ts checks the new rules for both personas. The primary-session golden was updated.

Update the stale byte-delta fixture.

The new persona-reply-language.test.ts assertions cover the human-only signal, excluded harness content, and translated-subagent requirements. Removing or truncating those requirements fails those tests.

The byte-delta test remains stale. It measures only the old 58-byte fixture, so it reports -283 B instead of the actual gentleman delta of 248 B. Update the fixture and expected values so the byte accounting matches the expanded prompt.

Re CodeRabbit's byte-delta note: keeping the fixture as-is, intentionally.

tests/persona-single-channel.test.ts is a frozen migration test: its header says the values are the ACTUAL wc -c deltas of the persona-single-channel change, recorded in openspec/changes/persona-single-channel/byte-measurements.md, and every term it sums (PRE_*/POST_* literals and NEW_GENTLEMAN_LANGUAGE_CLAUSE) is a frozen fixture constant — none read the live prompt. The NEW_GENTLEMAN_LANGUAGE_CLAUSE line it measures is the clause that change added, unchanged by this PR, so the test keeps measuring exactly what it has always measured.

Rewriting 58 B -> 248 B or -283 B -> +248 B would splice this PR's delta into a historical accounting that documents a different change and falsify its byte-measurements.md record. The live gentleman prompt growing ~248 B since that base is this PR's own delta, visible in this diff.
