Summary

ESP32 deploy spawned a bare esptool taken from PATH, even though the build provisions a pinned esptool for the same env. Run from a shell with no venv, every esptool step of the deploy failed with No such file or directory. With this change, deploy spawns the esptool that the build resolved.

Plumbing

  • fbuild-deploy: adds Esp32Deployer::with_esptool_path(Option<PathBuf>). find_esptool() is now a method. It returns the resolved path when one is set, and otherwise the bare esptool. The bare name still gets the feat(deploy): thread caller_path into deployers — bare-name deploy-time spawns still resolve against daemon PATH (follow-up to #1219) #1234 caller-PATH overlay. An absolute path gets no overlay, because bare_name_path_overlay already skips non-bare names.
  • fbuild-build-esp: adds pub async fn esp32::orchestrator::resolve_deploy_esptool(project_dir, env_config). It reuses the build's existing resolve_esptool, which checks FBUILD_ESPTOOL_PATH first and then the provisioned tool-esptoolpy package from the env's platform.json. No download logic is duplicated, and after a build the cache is already warm. If the resolved binary is the v4 esptool.py source package (older pioarduino pins), it returns None. The deployer emits the v5 hyphenated CLI (write-flash, default-reset), which v4 rejects. It detects v4 with the same file-name check that esp32_linker uses.
  • fbuild-daemon: the Espressif32 deploy arm calls that resolver through the existing fbuild_build facade dependency, so no new crate or dependency edge is added. It passes the result to .with_esptool_path(...). If resolution fails, the daemon logs a warning and falls back to esptool on PATH, which is the old behavior. Because the deploy arm runs for both build-then-deploy and skip_build, both paths are covered.

Note: ESP8266

ESP8266 has the same bare-name pattern, but on the build side: esp8266_linker.rs convert_firmware spawns a bare "esptool" for elf2image. ESP8266 has no daemon deploy arm (it falls through to the unsupported-platform branch), so there is no deploy-side equivalent to fix here. This PR leaves it unchanged.

Test plan

  • RED → GREEN: with_esptool_path_is_argv0_for_verify_and_write (the explicit path is argv[0] for verify-flash and write-flash, with no PATH overlay) and without_esptool_path_falls_back_to_bare_esptool (None gives esptool). Before the fix these failed to compile (no method with_esptool_path).
  • deploy_esptool_requires_v5_cli (fbuild-build-esp): the v5 binary is accepted; esptool.py and esptool.py.exe are rejected.
  • soldr cargo test -p fbuild-deploy --features espflash-native: 290 passed
  • soldr cargo test -p fbuild-build-esp and -p fbuild-daemon: all pass
  • soldr cargo clippy -p fbuild-daemon -p fbuild-deploy -p fbuild-build-esp --all-targets --features fbuild-deploy/espflash-native -- -D warnings: clean
  • soldr cargo fmt --all
  • Not tested on hardware: running fbuild deploy from a shell without a venv on an ESP32-C6, as in the issue, is still to be done.

Closes #1616

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • ESP32 deployments now use the esptool executable selected for the project when available, improving consistency between build and deployment.
    • When no compatible selected executable is available, deployment falls back to finding esptool through the caller’s PATH.
    • The configured executable is used for both flash verification and writing.

Esp32Deployer hard-coded a bare `esptool` argv[0], so deploy depended on
PATH even though the build provisions a pinned esptool for the same env.

- fbuild-deploy: add Esp32Deployer::with_esptool_path(Option<PathBuf>);
find_esptool() returns the resolved path, else bare `esptool` (which
  keeps the #1234 caller-PATH overlay).
- fbuild-build-esp: add pub resolve_deploy_esptool(project_dir, env),
reusing resolve_esptool (FBUILD_ESPTOOL_PATH, then the provisioned
  tool-esptoolpy package). A v4 esptool.py source package yields None,
since the deployer emits the v5 hyphenated CLI.
- fbuild-daemon: the ESP32 deploy arm passes the resolved path to the
deployer; a resolution error is logged and falls back to PATH.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

ESP32 deployment now resolves the build-selected esptool and passes its path to the deployer. The deployer uses that path for verify and write commands. When no path is available, it uses bare esptool lookup through the caller’s PATH.

The resolver checks the configured override and selected platform package. It filters out v4 esptool.py entry points. Tests cover filename detection.
Select the deployer executable
crates/fbuild-deploy/src/esp32/deployer.rs, crates/fbuild-deploy/src/esp32/tests.rs
The deployer accepts an optional resolved path for verify and write commands. Tests cover configured-path and bare-name behavior.
Pass resolution into deployment
crates/fbuild-daemon/src/handlers/operations/deploy.rs
The handler resolves esptool for the project and environment, then passes the optional path to the deployer. It logs a warning when resolution fails.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ec6ad

ESP32 deployment can fail for users relying on a configured v5 esptool.py without esptool on PATH. Fix the compatibility check before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ec6ad

Deployment now prefers the configured flashing tool while retaining the previous PATH fallback. No introduced vulnerability was established, but trust in executable selection and concurrent package recovery was not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The security-relevant scope is host-side tool execution, shared package-cache state and the serial device selected for flashing. A compromised selected executable could affect more than firmware bytes; effective account privileges, credential exposure and tenant isolation were not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — FBUILD_ESPTOOL_PATH is read from process environment and accepted when it names a file. Otherwise platform selection and managed installation supply the executable. This extends an existing build override into deployment; unauthorized control of that environment was not established.
  • observed — Bare executable names retain the requesting caller's PATH overlay. Non-bare paths skip that overlay. Caller-controlled PATH execution predates this change and is not treated as an introduced finding.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Managed standalone installation uses staged validation, verifies the executable and attempts removal of unusable cached installations. Source-package setup additionally installs isolated Python tooling. Complete locking, interruption cleanup and concurrent recovery guarantees beneath these calls remain unverified.

Review: v5 still ships esptool.py entry points, so the v4 file-name
heuristic must not reject an explicit override. Apply it only to the
package fbuild provisioned.
