2026-10-03 exact-head gate authority

  • Lifecycle: Ready for review / Proposed / merge HOLD.
  • Protected base: develop@2949d30718752ea5915c7713ba227e8c19d9e5bf; exact head: 5ddaf682cf8711a00bdca6c3e10f45d861a79ab6; exact tree: 2e7e9973f656a5a234528819e11a991f9aa558a1.
  • Current-head Tests, Security Scan, SAST, Security Process, OpenSSF, Retention, Pinned HTTPS, scan-path coverage, and CodeQL PR are terminal SUCCESS. All inline review threads are resolved.
  • Qualifying exact-head APPROVED reviews remain 0.
  • Required OpenCode review failed closed because dispatch completed but no authenticated APPROVED or CHANGES_REQUESTED verdict appeared for this head.
  • Required Noema review failed in contextual-orchestrator after one caller attempt: HTTP 400 response_error after 130.7 s on served model inclusionai/ling-3.0-flash-sante:free.
  • Required Strix review failed closed with STRIX_PROVIDER_UNAVAILABLE on contextual-orchestrator/orchestrator/free; no paid/local fallback was used.
  • These are review-control-plane/provider outcomes, not scanner-test failures. They do not authorize a source-neutral wake commit, manual rerun without cause change, fallback approval, merge, release, or deployment. Canonical owner tracking remains fix(review-gateway): own free-pool admission and remove leaf heuristic preflight contextual-orchestrator#1106; this PR stays Ready only to admit a real independent verdict.

2026-10-02 false-literal review admission (authoritative)

  • Ready for review / Proposed / merge HOLD. Ready is review admission, not approval, terminal CodeQL, merge, release, or deployment authority.
  • Protected base: develop@2949d30718752ea5915c7713ba227e8c19d9e5bf; exact head: 60cf72ee23c6d6e0ed45e385c4f403a21e7dcdc6; exact tree: 370819d4218fb0228170784e621b2234ac701279.
  • Ancestry is 31 ahead / 0 behind and GitHub reports mechanically mergeable. The effective protected-base delta remains exactly three intended files: CHANGELOG.d/1324-python-command-injection-detector.md, scanner/cli/appguardrail.py, and tests/test_injection_rules.py.
  • RCA: concurrent descendants after 6cb854cf… replaced the generalized runtime-false predicate with an enumerated constant list and removed the shell="" / shell=() regression lines. That list missed empty bytes: shell=b"" is false at runtime but was emitted as CRITICAL.
  • Test-only RED bed743f0001e5170fc5bf8ab06317b8a84c508ed restored the prior negative fixtures and added empty bytes. Tests 36948143930 failed on Python 3.11 and 3.13 only at the intended regression: 1 failed / 1,096 passed.
  • Minimal GREEN 60cf72ee23c6d6e0ed45e385c4f403a21e7dcdc6 changes only the shared ast.Constant predicate to not bool(keyword.value.value). Exact-head Tests 36948242923 pass 1,097/1,097 on both interpreters; live drift is 83/83 with statement coverage 192/192 and 491/491.
  • Exact-head Security Scan 36948242873, SAST 36948242892, Security Process 36948242930, OpenSSF 36948243081, Retention 36948242949, Pinned HTTPS 36948242861, and Scan path 36948243123 are SUCCESS. Draft CodeQL 36948242839 completed/skipped and is not successful analysis evidence.
  • All inline review threads are resolved and qualifying independent APPROVED reviews remain zero. Successful exact-head CodeQL and independent approval remain merge gates. No bypass, manual rerun, wake commit, Force Push, destructive rebase, merge, release, or deployment is authorized.

Current authority

  • protected base: develop@2949d30718752ea5915c7713ba227e8c19d9e5bf
  • exact live head: a97db990d2c7d5012c8e57f27debc1a26b5c2557
  • exact tree: a7840d139b5cc95d534b32635442973d14588af2
  • lifecycle: Ready / open / mergeable
  • ancestry: 20 ahead / 0 behind
  • effective protected-base delta: exactly 3 files
  • qualifying approval: 0
  • exact-head Checks: all eight non-CodeQL workflows terminal SUCCESS; CodeQL skipped under Draft; predecessor results do not transfer

Root cause

The generated regex searched raw Python text. It made comments and strings CRITICAL false positives and stopped at the first nested ), missing executable nested-argument calls. The first AST repair then used str.splitlines(), whose extra Unicode/control separators do not match Python AST newline semantics, and narrowed module-qualified suffix coverage.

The current follow-up root cause was a narrower literal check: only False, 0, and None were treated as statically disabled shell values. Empty string and empty literal containers are also false at runtime, so shell="" and shell=() were incorrectly emitted as CRITICAL findings.

A current-head review then identified an availability boundary: ast.parse() can raise RecursionError or MemoryError on adversarially deep or resource-exhausting input. Those exceptions escaped the detector instead of following the documented fail-closed regex fallback.

Detector contract

_iter_python_command_injection_matches() parses valid Python and emits exact source positions for:

  • direct or module-qualified os.system(...) calls;
  • direct or module-qualified subprocess.Popen/run/call/check_call/check_output(...) calls whose shell keyword is not statically false;
  • nested argument expressions before the shell keyword;
  • UTF-8 source with Python \n, \r\n, and \r boundaries even when form feed or U+2028 occurs in the preceding source line.

Comments, strings, assignments, ordinary argv-list calls, and literal False, numeric zero, None, empty strings, and empty tuple/list/set/dict values are negative. A dynamic expression remains conservatively positive. Syntax-invalid Python retains the prior regex as a fail-closed compatibility fallback.

Reproducible RED → GREEN

Test-only commit 194b74aedead749d8f839daf4a009a943a6a9893 added shell="" and shell=() negative fixtures. Hosted Tests run 36932595358 failed identically on Python 3.11 and 3.13: 1 failed, 1095 passed.

Minimal implementation commit 159ec8ac7710f4818696ac80b3c824bcfc85e08f made false constants and empty literal containers negative while retaining dynamic expressions as positive. Hosted Tests run 36933042558 passed on both interpreters: 1096 passed.

Ordinary merge 56380455fa51982d69cc1bbeb874362a0a40a3c9 integrated current protected develop without overlap. Its exact-head Tests run 36933356828 passed on Python 3.11 and 3.13 (1096 passed each), and Security Scan, SAST, Security Process, OpenSSF, Retention, Pinned HTTPS, and scan-path checks succeeded. Its Draft CodeQL was skipped, so this was not a merge gate.

Concurrent regression recovery

Concurrent child 9f52b8d9c9d1b0051235ccfcff43609b80fa0ab0 restated the empty-literal fix but was built from an incomplete tree: it removed protected-base workflow-lifecycle implementation, documentation, rules, and 2,264 lines of tests, and deleted the two RED fixtures. Its valid detector intent was already completely carried by 56380455....

Ordinary child 4d34f5b4a80951efac83e65e286a65e99a101100 preserves 9f52b8d9... in ancestry and restores the exact integrated GREEN tree. The protected-base comparison is again exactly the intended 3 files, 16 ahead / 0 behind. No force push or destructive rebase was used.

Second concurrent regression recovery

Concurrent direct child e98c31d73af330f2f8e63a403236a1cacc62a8e6 repeated the already-integrated resource-limit fallback but carried an incomplete tree: it removed protected workflow-lifecycle implementation, rules, documentation, and regression tests across 10 paths with 3,298 deletions. The PR was returned to Draft before repair.

Ordinary two-parent child a97db990d2c7d5012c8e57f27debc1a26b5c2557 keeps e98c31d... and GREEN 397bedec... in ancestry while restoring exact integrated tree a7840d139b5cc95d534b32635442973d14588af2. Protected-base comparison is again 20 ahead / 0 behind and exactly the intended three files. No Force Push or destructive rebase was used; fresh exact-head Checks are mandatory.

Exact-head checks

Test-only RED 176c9fff86afd9d200695abd61edd1367dc81026 patched the real AST boundary to raise RecursionError and MemoryError. Tests 36937650265 failed on both Python 3.11 and 3.13 only at the new regression (1 failed, 1096 passed each). Minimal GREEN 397bedec4284d1b3373e2af2476876431fd303dc adds only those two resource-limit exceptions to the existing fail-closed fallback.

The unchanged exact head completed Tests 36937764960 GREEN on Python 3.11 and 3.13 (1097 passed each; live drift 83 passed), plus Security Scan 36937764875, SAST 36937764867, Security Process 36937764914, OpenSSF 36937764828, Retention 36937764807, Pinned HTTPS 36937764797, and scan-path coverage 36937764834. Draft CodeQL 36937764835 is skipped. Both review threads are resolved, none is unresolved, and qualifying approval remains 0.

Current recovery head a97db990d2c7d5012c8e57f27debc1a26b5c2557 has fresh exact-head Tests 36938659867: 1,097/1,097 on Python 3.11 and 3.13, plus live drift 83/83 and 100% statement coverage (192/192, 491/491). Security Scan 36938659792, SAST 36938659761, Security Process 36938659878, OpenSSF 36938659718, Retention 36938659759, Pinned HTTPS 36938659787, and scan-path coverage 36938659736 are terminal SUCCESS. CodeQL 36938659786 completed/skipped under Draft and is not an analysis verdict. Unresolved threads are 0 and qualifying approvals are 0.

FP/FN boundary

  • An actual direct or module-qualified .os.system suffix remains a conservative CRITICAL signal even when the current argument is constant or the os attribute cannot be resolved statically.
  • A non-literal shell value remains conservatively positive because its runtime truth value is unresolved.
  • Module aliases, imported call aliases, callable wrappers, getattr, and positional shell arguments remain explicit false-negative boundaries for a later symbol-resolution analyzer.
  • The syntax-invalid fallback can still match comment/string text; this remains an explicit fail-closed tradeoff until parse-error findings and partial-source recovery have their own contract.

Delivery gate

Ready admits independent current-head review but remains unmerged until the unchanged exact head has terminal CodeQL success and a fresh qualifying approval; the other exact-head checks are terminal GREEN and there is no unresolved thread. Predecessor checks do not transfer. Do not force-push, destructively rebase, self-approve, source-neutrally retrigger, weaken gates, merge, tag, or release.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Updates the python-command-injection rule to detect bare `os.system`
calls (which inherently invoke a shell) and `shell=1` inside subprocess
commands, improving detection coverage for OWASP A03:2021 Injection
vulnerabilities.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4d34f

Unusual Python input can interrupt scanning instead of using the regex fallback. Handle these parser failures before merging; the previously reported finding-offset issue is fixed.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4d34f

Shell-call detection becomes more precise without gaining execution privileges. Exceptional parser failures could interrupt scanning and prevent security reports from being produced, although the command would fail rather than report success.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new AST parser lacks containment for exceptional failures such as RecursionError or MemoryError. If repository-controlled Python triggers such a failure, the whole scan stops before accumulated findings are published, remaining files are checked, or optional security engines run. This threatens scan availability and evidence delivery, not successful bypass of the CLI gate; exploitability within the file-size limit remains unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A contributor able to supply a Python file selected for scanning can reach the new parser without additional privileges. An exceptional parser failure can affect the entire invocation, including unrelated files and accumulated findings. The inspected change does not introduce another tenant, service, credential, or execution authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The bounded concern is repository input reaching ast.parse, an exceptional failure escaping the matcher and file scanner, and command termination before security reports are produced. No triggering input was reproduced, and this path does not establish a successful gate bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing controls reject symlinks, nonregular files, and files larger than 10 MiB. SyntaxError and ValueError retain regex detection. Other exceptions are not converted to empty findings or a successful result by the inspected CLI dispatch.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The finding consumer already handles out-of-order match positions, which accommodates AST traversal without corrupting line counting. Inspected regressions cover non-ASCII offsets, Python newline boundaries, and syntax-invalid fallback; they were not executed during this review.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define an explicit parser-resource failure policy that preserves a failing gate and clearly reports incomplete coverage. Consider bounded parser isolation and incremental evidence persistence so one hostile file cannot prevent unrelated findings from being delivered.

Current-head repair rationale (2fafe442ee909d916a79a7a3cced1f49ec74927d):

  • The two commits after the last verified recovery repeat already-integrated shell-parameter detector intent, but the resulting tree again removes the protected workflow-lifecycle implementation, rules, documentation, changelog, and regression corpus (about 3,298 deleted lines across 10 paths).
  • Code review also identified a valid mixed import in tests/test_injection_rules.py: importing both the module and SCAN_RULES directly.
  • I am moving the PR to Draft and will create an ordinary fast-forward child commit (no force push) whose tree restores the last verified protected state and changes only the import use to appguardrail.SCAN_RULES.

The repeated commits remain in history, so their intent is preserved and auditable; their invalid tree delta is not carried forward.

Current authority for exact head 6cb854cf247b42c9459ac60bd32e8eb706bed460 (tree 21a806b13a4731162a88f249898557dd33023188): Ready / Proposed / merge HOLD.

The protected-base diff is exactly three intended files and 24 ahead / 0 behind. Concurrent detector commits remain in ancestry, the 3,298-line workflow-lifecycle regression is restored, the mixed import is removed, all eight non-CodeQL exact-head Checks are SUCCESS, review threads are resolved, and qualifying independent approvals remain zero.

Draft-era CodeQL 36943413398 is SKIPPED. No fresh CodeQL run appeared after legitimate Ready admission, so this is a new exact-head stale-event reproduction, not passing evidence. It is recorded at canonical owner ContextualWisdomLab/.github#2040. Do not toggle this head again merely to wake CI; no manual rerun, synthetic commit, bypass, merge, release, or deployment is authorized.

Current-head repair rationale (525ad7d085b97469d6c8136cf416eda94ee00aa4):

  • The five commits after verified 6cb854cf247b42c9459ac60bd32e8eb706bed460 keep the protected workflow-lifecycle corpus, but replace the already-reviewed generalized false-literal predicate with an enumerated expression and again remove the shell="" / shell=() regression lines.
  • The enumerated predicate misses another real runtime-false constant: shell=b"". The current finder emits a CRITICAL finding even though subprocess treats the empty bytes object as false.
  • I am returning the PR to Draft, adding a test-only RED for empty string, empty tuple, and empty bytes, then applying the minimal shared-predicate GREEN. The valid single-module-import intent remains preserved.

No Force Push, destructive rebase, suppression, or source-neutral rerun will be used.

Exact-head gate RCA — merge remains blocked

Authority: 5ddaf682cf8711a00bdca6c3e10f45d861a79ab6 / tree 2e7e9973f656a5a234528819e11a991f9aa558a1.

Current-head Tests, seven other repository workflows, and CodeQL PR are terminal SUCCESS; all inline review threads are resolved. This is not merge authority because exact-head approvals are 0 and three independent-review jobs failed closed:

  • OpenCode: dispatch completed, but no authenticated current-head APPROVED or CHANGES_REQUESTED review was published.
  • Noema: contextual-orchestrator returned HTTP 400 response_error after 130.7 s, caller attempts=1, served model inclusionai/ling-3.0-flash-sante:free.
  • Strix: STRIX_PROVIDER_UNAVAILABLE for contextual-orchestrator/orchestrator/free; the gateway exhausted its free path and no paid/local fallback was used.

The scanner delta is not changed to accommodate review infrastructure. No source-neutral wake commit or manual rerun was issued because no causal owner change has landed. Keep Ready for a real independent verdict, but HOLD merge/release/deploy. Canonical owner: ContextualWisdomLab/contextual-orchestrator#1106.

Current authority — source-neutral event churn at exact head b58989e570cbb7fae4848e1501c8e1d4bdf6a080

Live head advanced from verified 5ddaf682cf8711a00bdca6c3e10f45d861a79ab6 by one ordinary child, but GitHub's authoritative compare reports 1 commit ahead and zero changed files. The tree therefore remains the verified 2e7e9973f656a5a234528819e11a991f9aa558a1; no scanner, test, documentation, or policy byte changed.

The child message claims an import correction, but that correction was already present in the verified tree. It is source-neutral event churn, not a new product repair. It invalidated predecessor exact-head admission and created six fresh workflow runs whose eight jobs all failed before execution:

  • Security Process 37095495543: jobs 111124449860, 111124449932
  • Pinned HTTPS 37095495439: job 111124449254
  • OpenSSF 37095495481: job 111124449455
  • Scan path 37095495428: job 111124449321
  • Retention 37095495498: job 111124449798
  • Tests 37095495495: jobs 111124449539, 111124449694

Every job exposes steps=null and logs_url=null. This is runner/admission failure and queue waste, not a source verdict.

Lifecycle remains Ready / Proposed / merge HOLD because no source/security/policy defect or conflict was introduced and Ready is review admission. The new commit does not inherit predecessor Checks or approval; exact-head executable Checks and qualifying independent approval are still required. No Draft/Ready toggle, blind rerun, wake commit, Force Push, bypass, merge, or Close was used.
