Remove internal proxy target from package.json and use .env file instead.

Thanks for this PR, but #216 already solved this differently so I don't think we need to update this PR to make it work with those changes. Your fix is actually superior but I don't think anyone's using this feature so either will work. I'm going to close as a result, but you can reopen if you wish to update this PR to reflect recent conflicts.
