Summary

Register a Git worktree or Jujutsu workspace that xf did not create, so list, list-all, prune, path and remove manage it where it actually lives.

xf worktree adopt ../shared/feature
xf worktree adopt ~/Sites/other --instance other-feature

xf worktree list
cd "$(xf worktree path dev/xfs/feature)"
xf worktree remove dev/xfs/feature
  • Metadata only. Adoption discovers the checkout's root, source and branch or workspace, then writes a registry record. It touches no checkout file, version-control metadata, working-copy state, branch, bookmark or workspace, and runs no Docker or clone.
  • <path> may be the checkout root or any directory inside it, absolute or relative to the current directory. A shell-expanded ~ works; a literal ~ is not treated as a home directory.
  • Refused: the source or main checkout, a detached Git checkout, a directory without a regular src/XF.php, and a path that is not a registered linked checkout. A Jujutsu workspace named HEAD is not detached and stays valid.
  • Addressing an adopted checkout. path and remove consult the conventional <source>.worktrees/<name> location first, then fall back to the registry. Created worktrees resolve exactly as before; only a location the conventional rule cannot name needs the record.
  • Instance precedence is --instance, then a non-empty XF_INSTANCE in the checkout's .env, then the name derived from the branch or workspace. --instance records metadata only, so a later remove still reads the checkout's own Docker configuration.
  • Removal validates the target against its repository before any teardown: it must be the root of a checkout that repository registers, must not be the source, and must be owned by the expected branch. A stale or tampered record cannot redirect a removal at an unrelated directory, and --force does not relax it.

Testing

  • go test -count=1 ./... passes, as do make lint (go vet and a gofmt check), make build, and the Lint / Test CI jobs.
  • internal/worktree/adopt_test.go: adopts a linked Git worktree (from its root and from a subdirectory), an explicit instance, and a Jujutsu workspace; pins the metadata-only promise (working-copy status and HEAD are unchanged); refuses the source checkout, a detached Git checkout, a checkout without src/XF.php, a path outside a repository, a missing path, a non-directory and an empty path; covers ValidateAdoptedSource (matching, mismatched, source) and requireXenForoCheckout (directory marker).
  • internal/worktree/remove_test.go: ValidateRemovalTarget accepts a conventional worktree, a linked worktree outside the convention and a Jujutsu workspace; rejects a wrong expected name, a checkout from another repository, the source, a non-root subdirectory and a non-directory; Remove with --force still refuses the source.
  • internal/worktree/registry_test.go: ForWorktree returns a recorded entry, is a no-match rather than an error when absent, matches through a symlink, reports conflicting sources, and tolerates agreeing duplicates.
  • cmd/xf/worktree_source_test.go: worktreeTarget prefers the conventional checkout, falls back to the registry, reports ambiguous records and a missing checkout; worktreeManagementSource uses the main checkout from a linked worktree and redirects an adopted Jujutsu workspace to its record's source; pathWithin and comparablePath.
  • internal/dockercompose/instance_test.go: NewRunner keeps the xf default for a missing .env, reads the instance and contexts from a readable one, and reports an unreadable .env instead of defaulting; ReadInstanceName covers a missing file, a file without the value and a file with it.

Notes

  • Coverage on the touched packages: Adopt 82%, ValidateAdoptedSource 78%, requireXenForoCheckout 89%, Registry.ForWorktree 88%, ValidateRemovalTarget 77%, worktreeTarget 82%, worktreeManagementSource 61%. The runWorktree* command handlers (cobra flag parsing and orchestration) remain covered only by manual use.
  • NewRunner no longer swallows a .env read error other than "not found". For a checkout whose .env exists but cannot be read it used to fall back to the xf project name, which would make remove run docker compose down --volumes against the source environment. A missing .env still takes the default.
  • The registry schema is unchanged; adopted entries reuse the existing fields (Cloned is false and CreatedAt is the registration time). There is no migration and no change to existing records.
  • Adopt derives its fallback instance name from the branch or workspace with BaseName, matching create, and adds no collision suffix or reservation.

Checklist

  • The change is focused and does not include unrelated work.
  • Relevant automated and/or manual testing has been performed.
  • UI changes include screenshots or video where appropriate.
  • Upgrade, compatibility, and performance implications have been considered.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added worktree adopt to register existing Git worktrees and Jujutsu workspaces without changing their checkout state. Supports instance naming, JSON output and management from adopted locations.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved checkout lookup and removal safeguards, including checks that prevent removing a source checkout or an environment shared with it.
    • Git and Jujutsu checkout detection now handles symlinked paths and unusual path names more reliably.
    • Unreadable .env files now produce an error instead of silently using a default instance name.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified backend-specific worktree behaviour, adoption options and removal requirements.

Walkthrough

The CLI can register existing linked Git worktrees and Jujutsu workspaces, resolve registered checkouts for management commands, and validate checkout and environment conditions before removal. Git and Jujutsu discovery and registry path matching also account for linked checkout relationships and symlinks.

Changes: Linked checkout management

Layer / File(s) Summary
Discover linked checkouts
README.md, internal/worktree/backend.go, internal/worktree/git.go, internal/worktree/jj.go, internal/gitenv/*, internal/worktree/git_test.go
Git and Jujutsu backends discover linked checkout roots and source checkouts. Git command environments exclude repository-redirection variables. Jujutsu metadata discovery uses read-only command options.
Adopt and register a checkout
internal/worktree/adopt.go, internal/worktree/backend.go, internal/worktree/create.go, cmd/xf/worktree.go, internal/dockercompose/runner.go, internal/worktree/adopt_test.go, internal/dockercompose/instance_test.go, README.md
The adopt command validates and records an existing linked checkout without changing its checkout state. It selects an instance name from the command option or checkout configuration, and re-adoption updates the record.
Resolve registered checkouts
internal/worktree/registry.go, internal/worktree/paths.go, cmd/xf/worktree.go, cmd/xf/worktree_source_test.go, internal/worktree/registry_test.go, README.md
Registry operations match paths by resolved identity and report conflicting records. Creation, listing and path lookup use registry-aware source and target resolution.
Validate removal targets
internal/worktree/remove.go, cmd/xf/worktree.go, internal/dockercompose/runner.go, internal/worktree/remove_test.go, cmd/xf/worktree_remove_test.go
Removal verifies the target checkout and its owner before proceeding, including when --force is used. It also refuses to tear down an environment shared with the source unless --keep-containers is set.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(worktree): adopt existing worktrees and workspaces" matches the main change. The changeset adds xf worktree adopt &lt;path&gt; to register existing Git worktrees and Jujutsu workspaces, and it updates path and removal resolution to use the registry. The title is specific and concise, and it follows a conventional commit style.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template well. It has a Summary with a usage example and bullets on metadata-only behaviour, path handling, refusal conditions, instance precedence, and removal validation. It has a Testing section that lists specific commands and test files. It has a Notes section with coverage figures, the .env read-error change, the unchanged registry schema, and the instance-name fallback. It has a Checklist with items ticked. The template's 'Visual evidence' section is omitted, which is acceptable because the change has no visible UI. The Testing section uses long bullets that partly narrate test contents, which the template discourages, but the required information is present and the description is largely complete.

Audit of 7f2ab36: fix first

Adopting existing worktrees is a useful feature, and the removal hardening around it is careful. One path, though, lets xf worktree remove delete the source environment's Docker volumes, and adopting a checkout makes that much easier to hit.

Blocker: removing an adopted checkout can delete the source's database (high)

Where: runWorktreeAdopt, runWorktreeRemove and destroyWorktreeEnvironment in cmd/xf/worktree.go.

Trigger: git worktree add ../elsewhere/feature, then copy compose.yaml and .env from the main checkout into it (a normal way to make a hand-made worktree runnable), then xf worktree adopt ../elsewhere/feature.

What happens: adopt records Instance: xf, the same instance as the source, without warning. Then xf worktree remove feature tears down the source's project. I reproduced this with a throwaway repo, an isolated HOME and a fake docker that only logs its arguments:

compose --project-name xf --file .../elsewhere/feature/compose.yaml down --volumes --remove-orphans

The same happens when .env is missing, because the instance then defaults to xf.

Why it's a gap: create already refuses an instance equal to the source's (instanceTaken → name == sourceInstance). Neither adopt nor remove has that check. The PR's own NewRunner change exists to prevent down --volumes against the source environment, but this more likely route stays open. --instance on adopt doesn't help either, since remove reads the checkout's own .env.

Suggested fix: in runWorktreeRemove, refuse to tear down the environment when the target's instance equals configuredInstance(source). Keep that refusal under --force, and point users to --keep-containers. Adopt should also warn or refuse when the resolved instance matches the source's.

Test: remove a checkout whose .env shares the source's XF_INSTANCE, with a fake docker on PATH, and assert that docker is never called.

Should fix: a branch name can resolve to, and remove, a different worktree (medium)

Where: worktreeTarget, plus the expected = "" logic in runWorktreeRemove.

Trigger: a conventional <source>.worktrees/feature directory holds branch other, and an adopted checkout elsewhere is on branch feature.

Result: xf worktree path feature prints the conventional other worktree. xf worktree remove feature --keep-containers removes it, deleting branch other, and leaves the adopted feature checkout in place.

Cause: Locate falls back to a directory-name match before the registry is consulted. The numbered-directory change then skips the owner check exactly when the base name matches. That contradicts the comment in worktreeTarget saying removal's branch check "can still refuse a conventional-name collision".

Suggested fix: let an exact branch match, from Git or the registry, win over a directory-name match, or refuse when both kinds of match exist. A table test in worktree_source_test.go with this layout would cover it.

Minor

  • Adopted checkouts can only be addressed by their full branch name, while conventional ones also accept the directory name. That's acceptable, but the README doesn't say so.
  • ValidateRemovalTarget runs twice per removal, once in runWorktreeRemove and again in Remove. Each run shells out several times. Keeping a single call ahead of teardown would be simpler.
  • The Git sourceCheckout rewrite (worktree list --porcelain -z instead of --git-common-dir) changes source detection for every worktree command. It looks correct and is tested, but it reaches further than the title suggests.

Checks

  • CI is green on 7f2ab36, and make all passes locally.
  • All three CodeRabbit findings are addressed. The numbered-directory fix is what opens the medium issue above.
  • Not verified: a real Docker teardown (simulated with a fake docker), Jujutsu adopt/remove end to end (covered only by the PR's tests), and Windows.

Contributor Author

Thanks for the audit. All three points are addressed on aeeb1ba.

Blocker: shared instance. remove now compares the target's configured instance with the source's before teardown, using the same NewRunner resolution as destroyWorktreeEnvironment. When they match it refuses even with --force, and points at --keep-containers. adopt also warns at registration time when the checkout's .env names the source instance. TestRemoveRefusesTheSourceEnvironment puts a fake docker on PATH, then asserts it is never called and the checkout survives.

Medium: branch vs directory name. Locate now reports whether it matched an exact branch/workspace or only a directory name (LocateMatch). worktreeTarget prefers an exact branch match from the registry over a conventional directory-name match, so <source>.worktrees/feature holding other no longer captures path/remove feature when an adopted feature exists. An exact branch inside the conventional location still wins, as before. Added TestWorktreeTargetPrefersAnExactBranchOverADirectoryName.

Minor

  • README now documents the resolution order and that adopted checkouts are addressed by their full branch or workspace name.
  • Double ValidateRemovalTarget: kept deliberately. The first call must run before teardown; the second keeps worktree.Remove safe for any caller. Both runs are read-only.
  • Git sourceCheckout rewrite: left as-is; it is needed for correct source discovery and is covered by existing tests.
  • The README's instance-derivation wording was already corrected earlier in the PR.

make all passes.

internal/worktree/git.go:100-117
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Sanitise the Git environment before checkout discovery.

When xf worktree adopt A inherits GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE for linked checkout B, gitOutput still runs with cmd.Dir = A, but Git uses B as the repository and worktree. --show-toplevel can therefore return B. linkedCheckout then matches B in git worktree list and returns B as the adopted path.

B can pass the source-checkout and src/XF.php checks. runWorktreeAdopt then records the returned path, so adoption can register B instead of the requested A. Remove the inherited repository-location variables at the shared Git command boundary.

Register a Git worktree or Jujutsu workspace that xf did not create, so
list, list-all, prune, path and remove manage it at its real location.

Adoption is metadata-only: Adopt discovers the checkout root, source and
branch or workspace and records them in the registry. It never touches
checkout files, version-control metadata, working-copy state, branches or
bookmarks, and never configures Docker or clones an environment.

An adopted checkout is addressed by its branch or workspace. Path and
remove first consult the conventional "<source>.worktrees/<name>"
location and fall back to the registry, so a checkout adopted outside
that location is found without changing how created worktrees resolve.

Removal validates the target against its repository before anything is
destroyed: a stale or tampered registry record cannot redirect a removal
at an unrelated directory, and --force does not relax that check.

Addressed the outside-diff finding from review 5688270766 (sanitise the Git environment before checkout discovery) in 45175ed.

Git commands in the worktree package now go through a single gitCommand helper that sets the working directory and builds the environment with gitenv.Environment(). That removes GIT_DIR, GIT_WORK_TREE, GIT_INDEX_FILE, GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY, GIT_ALTERNATE_OBJECT_DIRECTORIES, GIT_COMMON_DIR, and GIT_PREFIX, so Git resolves the repository from the directory xf names. It covers all five call sites — gitOutput, show-ref, create, remove, and the branch delete — not only discovery.

TestAdoptIgnoresARepositoryNamedByTheEnvironment adopts a linked worktree while GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE point at another XenForo checkout. Without the change, adoption resolves that other checkout and refuses it as the source; it passes now. TestEnvironmentDropsRepositoryLocation covers the filter itself.

The test helpers use the same gitenv.Environment() instead of a test-only copy, so production and fixtures share one definition.

make all passes and the branch is rebased and force-pushed as a single commit. This was an outside-diff review comment, so there is no inline thread to resolve.
