What

Harden the existing OpenChart library's rendering and reader interaction contracts. Invalid updates now preserve the last valid visualization, keyboard inspection works consistently across specialized renderers, and static exports match settled chart geometry and typography.

  • Compile before committing mount updates; resume resizing after entrance animations and avoid replaying Sankey entrances on refresh.
  • Share roving keyboard navigation across maps, tile maps, bar lists and Sankey. Restore valid focus by identity, release graph Tab navigation, and preserve table focus and native mobile disclosures.
  • Resolve layered tooltips and crosshairs to the correct leaf, including duplicate series names, reversed paint order and independent axes. Reconcile reader pins with destination filter visibility.
  • Treat missing, blank, boolean and nonfinite measurements consistently instead of fabricating zeros. Preserve explicit line/area gaps through interrupted motion, and diagnose invalid Sankey flows.
  • Render terminal SVG/raster exports without transient hover effects; retain map camera clipping, embed inline/inherited fonts, and export all filtered/sorted table rows across pagination.
  • Reuse shared chrome wrapping and measured typography for bar lists and Sankey. Update the narrow Sankey visual baseline for the intended responsive title/subtitle sizing.

Why

The existing suite needs predictable behavior across updates, input methods, small screens and exports to serve library consumers reliably. These are shared runtime/compiler improvements; the published library remains independent of Studio, with zero product-app dependencies in the bundle audit.

No new visualization types or SaaS workflows are introduced. Layered reader pinning remains explicitly unsupported and clears with an announcement; layered hover/crosshair inspection is supported. Table row keys are opaque identities, with duplicate-key diagnostics instead of silent rebinding.

How to test

  1. Run bun run test: all 299 test files and 5,228 tests pass on the final revision. The rejected-mid-animation regression was verified failing before its fix, then passing with the production renderer.
  2. Run bun run test:invariants: 169 passed and 11 capability-specific skips across desktop Chromium, two mobile Chromium profiles and mobile WebKit. The 12 new desktop/WebKit interaction checks also passed again after the typography changes.
  3. Run bunx playwright test --project=visual -g sankey: all four screenshots pass. The single changed narrow baseline was visually compared before acceptance.
  4. Open Ladle's Testing / Library Contracts / Lifecycle: inspect with Tab/arrows/Enter/Escape, resize between narrow/wide, update, reject an invalid update, switch theme and download an export. Manually verified map zoom/selection, tile-map evidence, compact Sankey/bar-list typography, and table disclosure/search/sort behavior.

Architecture and product UX reviewers approved after the review/fix loop. Tests use real compilers/renderers; only timing, browser environment and font network boundaries are stubbed where required. Final CI is green: build/lint/types/tests, 127 Chromium layout checks, 31 Studio unit tests, 60 production-browser cases and another 60 cases from an extracted app under a nested hosting path. Automated PR review is green.

Checklist

  • bun run build passes
  • bun run test passes
  • bun run typecheck passes
  • bun run lint passes
  • Generated schema, authoring reference and CSS tokens are current
  • Product boundary and library bundle checks pass

Walkthrough

The changes add shared finite-number validation across visualization computations. They also update layered mark identity, reader reconciliation, renderer lifecycle behavior, keyboard interactions, table identities, and export handling. Tests and documentation cover these changes.

Changes

Visualization library behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Finite numeric observations
packages/engine/src/data/finite-number.ts, packages/engine/src/charts/*, packages/engine/src/transforms/*, packages/engine/src/geo/*, packages/engine/src/sankey/*, packages/engine/src/tilemap/*, packages/engine/src/__tests__/*
A shared parser accepts finite numbers and numeric strings, and rejects blank strings and other non-measurements. Engine computations use it to omit invalid observations, prevent non-finite geometry, and validate positive Sankey flows. Tests cover these rules across chart types and transforms.
Layer identity and reader reconciliation
packages/engine/src/compile/layer.ts, packages/vanilla/src/interactions/*, packages/vanilla/src/reader.ts, packages/vanilla/src/__tests__/layer-interaction.test.ts, packages/vanilla/src/__tests__/reader.test.ts
Layer compilation scopes mark and point keys and carries tooltip descriptors to the corresponding marks. Crosshair groups distinguish repeated series names across layers. Reader updates reconcile pinned observations against destination marks and disable pinning for layered charts.
Compile-before-commit renderer updates
packages/vanilla/src/mount.ts, packages/vanilla/src/*-mount.ts, packages/vanilla/src/transition/*, packages/vanilla/src/__tests__/lifecycle-contracts.test.ts, examples/src/testing/library-contracts.*
Renderer updates compile candidate specifications before adopting them. Line and area paths retain missing-data gaps during updates and interrupted transitions. The Storybook fixture provides renderer selection, update, rejection, resize, export, and teardown controls.
Keyboard navigation and focus restoration
packages/vanilla/src/interactions/mark-navigation.ts, packages/vanilla/src/graph/keyboard.ts, packages/vanilla/src/table-keyboard.ts, packages/vanilla/src/*-mount.ts, e2e/invariants/library-interactions.spec.ts
Keyboard navigation is wired to marks in bar lists, maps, tile maps, and Sankey charts. Graph Tab handling leaves page navigation intact. Table navigation restores logical cell focus and supports row activation and search cancellation.
Exports, table identities, and contracts
packages/vanilla/src/export.ts, packages/vanilla/src/map-camera.ts, packages/vanilla/src/table-mount.ts, packages/vanilla/src/table-renderer.ts, packages/engine/src/tables/*, docs/*, llms-full.txt, CHANGELOG.md
Renderer exports use newly rendered SVGs and resolved theme options; font embedding resolves inherited text styles and normalizes weights. Map exports preserve viewport clipping. Table row IDs use resolved observation identities, and CSV export includes all filtered and sorted rows. Documentation and the changelog record the updated contracts.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5af9d

The PR is mergeable with small follow-ups. A rejected chart update during an animation can produce a brief visual ghost on the next update. Exported SVGs can omit an embedded font when styles use CSS-wide keywords such as initial.

585-597: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Deduplicate ambiguous row-key warnings per table mount.

compileTableLayout emits the warning on every compile. emitSpecWarnings only deduplicates messages within one compile, so sorting, searching, paging, resizing, or exporting can repeat the same warning. Use a per-mount warning sink or set to emit TABLE_ROW_KEY_AMBIGUOUS once.

The typed row IDs are intentional opaque identities. Internal table consumers use the same row.id value for rendering and lookup.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Inherited font lookup misses the font shorthand and fixed-case keywords.

inheritedFontProperty checks only font-family and font-weight. It skips inherit and unset, but it does not skip initial or revert. These values then become the family or weight. A tspan with font-weight: initial yields the weight initial, which never matches a font-face rule.

Treat all CSS-wide keywords as "continue to the parent". Per the learning, CSS-wide keywords cannot be a family inside the font shorthand, so the longhand lookup is correct.

Proposed fix
-    if (value && value !== 'inherit' && value !== 'unset') return value;
+    if (value && !['inherit', 'unset', 'initial', 'revert', 'revert-layer'].includes(value)) {
+      return value;
+    }
