An extension can now draw the agent in voice mode, in place of the orb, and each agent chooses what it is drawn as in its Avatar dialog. Nothing in core names an app: the portal hands an extension the box the orb is drawn in and what the orb is told, and draws the orb wherever the extension's avatar cannot be drawn.

The slot: voice.avatar

An entry has a title and an optional description. Its component is given:

  • agent: { id, name }, the agent it is drawn for.
  • mode: the orb's four (idle, input, output, muted) plus thinking: the agent at work with nothing played yet, which is when the stage says Transcribing, Thinking, Preparing your reply or Compacting context. It is not thinking while the person is heard or holds to talk, and it wins over muted. The orb itself is told exactly what it was before.
  • levels: the same ref the orb reads, levels.current.input and .output from 0 to 1. The component is not drawn again for them; it reads them in its own animation frame.
  • still: a picture of the agent rather than voice mode (the Agents page's cards and the avatar on an agent's page), drawn once.
  • orb: the portal's orb for the same agent, mode and levels, to draw while there is nothing of its own to draw yet.

The types are in packages/extension-api/index.d.ts (AvatarLevels, AvatarMode, AvatarProps, and the slot in SlotMap). Portal.version stays 1: this only adds.

Where it is drawn (AgentAvatar, new): on the stage, in the dialog's preview and on its card, and on the Agents page's cards. It sits in the orb's own box (.voice-avatar-x, inset: 0, no pointer events, so push-to-talk holds still land on the box). Off the stage that box is all of the dark square it is drawn on: 112 px on a card, 64 on the agent's page, the preview's square in the dialog. The w-[56%], w-[66%] and w-[58%] the box had there never took effect (stage.css's .voice-avatar { width: 100% } comes after the utilities), so the orb has always been drawn at the square's size; they are gone, and the orb is as it was. The square cuts an extension's avatar at its edge (has-[.voice-avatar-x]:overflow-hidden), as the dialog's preview already did, so what it may draw past its box on the stage does not reach over the agent's name. The orb's own square does not cut, so its glow and its tallest hats (party, top hat, wizard, sprout) still rise past it. It has an error boundary and a Suspense of its own, both falling back to the orb: an avatar that throws, or whose chunk cannot be fetched, is replaced by the orb and reported through failedIn (so Settings → Extensions says so); one still being fetched shows the orb, and the stage around it stays.

The per-agent choice

The choice is a field of the stored look, OrbStyle.avatar: "orb" (the default, and what every existing agent reads as) or the entry's <package>/<id>, at most 256 characters. No schema change: the look is the JSON already in agents.orb, and a look stored before reads as "orb". A PUT without avatar gets the orb back, as for any field left out. The orb's own look is kept with the choice, so the orb drawn in its place is the agent's own.

GET /api/agent/avatar?session= answers { agent: { id, name }, orb }, the agent a chat is with and its avatar; voice mode reads this now instead of GET /api/agent/orb, which stays as it is for scripts.

The Avatar dialog gets a row Shown as above its sections, only when there is something to choose (an avatar an extension offers, or a saved choice that is not the orb), so for everyone without such an extension it looks as before. It lists the orb and every entry by its title and description in the extension's own words. With an extension's avatar chosen, the orb's sections give way to one line that says the extension sets it up, and the preview gets a fifth state, Thinking (five states lay out as 5 columns on a phone and 3 in the wide layout's narrow column). A saved choice the page does not have is shown as Not available, pressed; once the extensions have been gone through, a line says why and that voice mode shows the orb. Saving keeps it, so the avatar comes back with its extension. Reset to default puts the orb back.

German for every new text is in de.ts.

Docs

  • docs/guide/extension-ui.md: the slot in the table, and a new section An avatar in voice mode: what the person sees, each prop, levels read per frame, when mode is thinking, the box (resized without remounting, a ResizeObserver applied in your own frame, 3/14 overscan on the stage; off it the box is the square it is drawn on and what is past it is cut), pausing out of view, reduced motion from the media query, still as a picture (browsers keep about 16 WebGL contexts a page), orb while loading, keeping ids stable, failures falling back to the orb, and not stopping pointer events. A short plain-JS canvas example, which I ran as written on the stage in a scratch spec.
  • docs/guide/voice.md, docs/guide/agents.md: the Shown as row, Thinking, and the orb where an avatar cannot be drawn.
  • docs/reference/api.md: avatar in PUT /api/agents/:id/orb, and GET /api/agent/avatar.

Tests

  • tests/orb-style.test.mts: avatar is the orb when missing, empty, not a string or over 256 characters; a key is kept.
  • core/server/test/agents.test.mjs, project-agent-api.test.mjs: the choice saved and listed; /api/agent/avatar names the chat's agent (its home, a linked project, else the first) with its look; a PUT without avatar is the orb again.
  • tests/fixtures/extensions/puppet ("test-puppet"): the stand-in, with puppet (a square that follows the levels, says what it was given and counts its mounts and renders), waiting (draws orb), broken (throws) and later (the puppet from a chunk of its own).
  • tests/browser/voice-avatar.spec.mts (16): the stage draws the puppet with the agent, mode and levels; thinking while the agent works and while transcribing, then output; drawn again only for a new mode (not across five pieces of thinking streamed in, and across a speech turn and four pieces of a reply as many times as it was given a new mode, mounted once); the orb for a throw and for a chunk that cannot be fetched, each reported; the orb while a chunk is fetched with the stage kept; the orb drawn by waiting in exactly the orb's box; the same box docked at 100 px and at 64 px on a phone, mounted once; push-to-talk held on the avatar (and a tap while the agent works is not thinking); the orb without the extension; the dialog's list, the five previews, saving, Reset to default and Thinking back to Speaking; German labels that fit at both widths; Not available before and after the extensions settle, and kept on save; the Agents page's cards drawn still; the box all of the square on the card (112), the agent's page (64) and the preview (220), each cutting the puppet, and the orb's square on a card not cut; no Shown as without an extension.
  • The hand-written looks in voice-source, settings-discard and load-failures specs get avatar: 'orb', as the server now answers.

Mutation check: 28 single changes to the new code, each run against the tests meant to catch it (the length cap, the route's agent and name, the slot's name, thinking and each of its parts, the error boundary's fallback, the failure report, the Suspense fallback, still, orb, the agent kept from the answer, the frame's CSS, and each piece of the dialog: when the row shows, Not available, its line before the extensions settle, the summary, the five states and their grid, Thinking back to Speaking, the tabs, the preview's thinking, the card). 27 made a test fail. The one that did not: dropping onError={failedIn(…)} from AgentAvatar's boundary. In the dev build the specs run on, React also reports an error its boundary caught to window, and the loader's own handler pins it on the extension by its file, so the failure is told either way; in a production build only onError tells it. Later, breaking the useMemo of the orb or of the agent in AgentAvatar (so the memo-wrapped avatar is drawn again with every stage render) left every spec passing; the render-count spec added since fails for each. Without the square's cut, the card's and the agent page's box checks fail.

Run on the Mac: npm run check:boundaries, npm run build -w core/web (tsc -b and vite build), npm run docs:build, the server build and its tests, tests/*.test.mts and extensions/*/test/*.test.mts, and the browser specs voice-avatar, orb, voice, voice-windows, voice-interaction, voice-mode, voice-reload, voice-source, agent-page, settings-discard, load-failures, stage-css, motion, translated-text, language (all passed). The server and unit suites have the failures main has on a Mac (37 server tests and 33 unit tests: jobs found through /proc, the sandbox's users and folder links, Docker and ffmpeg), none of them in what this touches; I compared against a checkout of main.

After the square's cut and the render-count spec: tsc for core/web, npm run docs:build, the unit tests of the API package, the boundaries and the licences, and the browser specs voice-avatar (16; the new checks four times over), agent-page, accessible-names, orb, mobile, stage-css, translated-text, load-failures, settings-discard, voice-source, voice-interaction and channel-pairing (all passed).

Not in this PR

  • Screenshots of the dialog (orb chosen, the puppet on Thinking, Not available), the stage (middle, docked, phone) and the Agents page were taken from the specs' pages; gh cannot attach pictures to a PR body, so they are not here.

  • The header of core/server/src/orb-style.ts still says the orb is "one setting for the whole portal", which has not been true since avatars went per agent. Left as it is.

  • Release: everything here only adds (a slot, types, an optional field, a route, the old route kept), so it fits a 0.2.1 with @pithagoras/extension-api 0.2.1. That is yours.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Choose an extension-provided avatar for an agent’s voice experience, alongside the built-in orb.
    • Preview avatar states and audio activity in the customization dialog. Extension avatars can respond to voice modes and live audio levels.
    • See agent avatars in voice mode and agent cards. If an avatar is unavailable or fails to load, the orb appears while the saved choice is retained.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for selecting, building, and configuring extension-provided avatars.

…er agent

A new slot, voice.avatar: an extension's entry is drawn where voice mode
draws the orb, given the agent, the mode (the orb's four and thinking, while
the agent works and nothing is played), the live levels the orb reads, still
for a picture of the agent, and the orb itself to draw while loading. It is
drawn on the stage, in the Avatar dialog's preview and card, and on the
Agents page's cards, in the orb's own box, with an error boundary and a
Suspense of its own that both fall back to the orb; failures are told to
Settings → Extensions.

Each agent chooses what it is drawn as in its Avatar dialog, under Shown as:
the orb, or an avatar an extension offers. The choice is kept in the agent's
stored look (avatar: "orb" or "<package>/<id>"), with no schema step. A
choice whose extension is not in the page is shown as Not available and kept.
GET /api/agent/avatar tells voice mode the chat's agent with its look;
GET /api/agent/orb stays for scripts.

Types in @pithagoras/extension-api, the guide's new section, German, a
stand-in extension (tests/fixtures/extensions/puppet) and browser specs.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds extension-provided agent avatars. Orb settings store a validated avatar key, and a new API route returns the chat agent identity with its orb settings. Voice-stage and agent-page views render the selected avatar when available and use the orb as a fallback.

Changes: Extension-provided agent avatars

Layer / File(s) Summary
Avatar settings and API
core/server/src/orb-style.ts, core/server/src/server.ts, core/server/test/*, tests/orb-style.test.mts, tests/browser/load-failures.spec.mts, tests/browser/settings-discard.spec.mts, tests/browser/voice-source.spec.mts, docs/reference/api.md
Orb settings now include an avatar key, default to orb, and normalize invalid or overlong values to the default. GET /api/agent/avatar returns the agent identity and orb settings for a session. Tests cover avatar normalization, saving, and agent resolution.
Extension avatar runtime
packages/extension-api/index.d.ts, core/web/src/extensions/slots.ts, core/web/src/api.ts, core/web/src/components/AgentAvatar.tsx, core/web/src/components/VoiceStage.tsx, core/web/src/components/VoiceOrb.tsx, core/web/src/styles/stage.css, docs/guide/extension-ui.md, tests/fixtures/extensions/puppet/*, tests/browser/voice-avatar.spec.mts
The extension API defines the voice.avatar slot and its props. Voice-stage rendering loads the chat avatar and passes its agent, mode, levels, still-image flag, and orb fallback to the selected extension component. The orb is used when the extension avatar is unavailable or fails.
Avatar selection and preview
core/web/src/components/AgentPage.tsx, core/web/src/components/OrbStudio.tsx, core/web/src/locales/de.ts, docs/guide/agents.md, docs/guide/voice.md, tests/browser/voice-avatar.spec.mts
Agent cards use AgentAvatar. The avatar customizer lists extension choices, retains unavailable saved choices, and provides extension-specific preview states and instructions. Tests cover selection, saving, fallback, and localized labels.

A voice chat can temporarily show the previously selected avatar after a save. This is a bounded display issue, but request ordering should be fixed before relying on the refresh behavior.

Reload the chat avatar when the session reloads.

When another tab relinks the project, the active voice chat receives portal_reload, but useChatAvatar does not reload. The mounted stage can therefore keep the old agent name and extension avatar after /reload.

The square an avatar is drawn on, on an agent's card (112 pixels) and on
its page (64), is all of its box. The w-[56%], w-[66%] and w-[58%] on the
box never took effect, as stage.css's width for .voice-avatar comes after
the utilities, and the orb has been drawn at the square's size since they
were written: they go, and the orb is as it was.

What the guide lets an extension's avatar draw past its box on the stage
reached over the agent's name on its card, and to its name on its page.
The square now cuts it when it holds an extension's avatar, as the
dialog's preview already did; the orb's own square does not, so its glow
and its tallest hats still rise past it. The guide and the types say that
off the stage the box is the square and what is past it is cut, and the
spec checks the boxes and the cut.

… with every piece of a reply

The stage is drawn again with each piece of thinking and of a reply, and
an extension's avatar is memo-wrapped: what keeps it from being drawn
again with the stage is AgentAvatar making the orb and the agent once for
what they show. No spec checked it, and breaking either left them all
passing. The puppet now counts the times it is drawn, and a spec streams
thinking in, then has the person heard and a reply streamed in and
played: the puppet is not drawn again for the thinking, and is drawn as
many times as it was given a new mode, once mounted. With either memo
broken it fails.

🟡 Minor · Guard avatar responses by request order. · AgentAvatar.tsx:17-22

core/web/src/components/AgentAvatar.tsx:17-22
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Guard avatar responses by request order.

If a user starts saving on the Agents page and opens one of that agent’s chats before api.setAgentOrb completes, the chat’s initial avatar request can still be pending when OrbStudio.save dispatches ORB_STYLE_EVENT. Both requests share live, so the earlier response can finish last and restore the pre-save avatar in the open voice stage.

Suggested fix
   useEffect(() => {
     let live = true;
-    const load = () => api.chatAvatar(session).then(({ agent, orb }) => { if (live) setAvatar({ agent, look: orb }); }).catch(() => {});
+    let request = 0;
+    const load = () => {
+      const current = ++request;
+      return api.chatAvatar(session).then(({ agent, orb }) => {
+        if (live && current === request) setAvatar({ agent, look: orb });
+      }).catch(() => {});
+    };
     void load();
     window.addEventListener(ORB_STYLE_EVENT, load);

Update the `AgentAvatar` effect’s `load` request handling so only the most
recently started `api.chatAvatar(session)` request can update the avatar;
preserve the `live` guard and existing event-listener cleanup.
