Split out of #1876 (originally 7850cbf), as requested in review there.

Change

An image sequence with a gap in its numbering holds the previous frame at the missing numbers, as After Effects does, instead of showing the colour bars. This reverses the behaviour documented in #297.

The case: files 1, 2, 4 and 5 show frame 2 at frame 3, read back from After Effects 2026.

Test

sequence_gaps_hold_the_previous_frame.

Note

This should land after #1875.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Image sequences now repeat the preceding frame when a numbered frame is missing, instead of showing color bars.
  • Documentation
    • Updated image-sequence guidance to describe the missing-frame behavior.

…After Effects

Split out of storytold#1876 (originally 7850cbf), because it reverses the colour bars
documented in storytold#297 and needs its own discussion.

After Effects 2026 shows the last existing file across a gap in a sequence's
numbering (files 1, 2, 4, 5 show frame 2 at frame 3; read back from After
Effects). EffectCraft drew colour bars there. The media pool now holds the
previous file (Footage::sequence_file_held); colour bars remain only where no
file precedes the frame. Missing-frame reports on import are unchanged.

Walkthrough

Image-sequence lookup now uses the preceding numbered file when a requested frame is missing. Exact matches remain unchanged. If no preceding file is available, the existing placeholder path remains. Tests, warnings, and documentation describe the previous-frame behavior.

Changes: Image-Sequence Gap Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve the preceding sequence file
crates/project/src/sequence.rs
Added Footage::sequence_file_held, which returns the exact numbered file or the first file with the preceding number. Tests cover gaps and duplicate frame numbers.
Use and verify held frames
crates/media/src/pool.rs, crates/media/tests/it/footage.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs, crates/engine/src/tests/sequence.rs, docs/agents.md, docs/footage.md
The media pool uses the new lookup. Tests expect the preceding frame at a gap. Engine warnings and documentation describe the held-frame behavior.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title states the main change: at a numbering gap in an image sequence, the previous frame is held, matching After Effects. The raw summary confirms the change adds Footage::sequence_file_held, switches pool.rs to use it, renames and updates the gap test, and updates docs and the missing-frame warning from placeholders to frame holding. The title is specific and on-topic. It does not mention the warning or doc updates, which is acceptable because it names the primary behavior change.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 75.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 5 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

… gap; fix the import warning

A gap now holds the file sequence_file picks for the preceding number, so
files sharing a number do not switch at the gap. The Report Missing Frames
warning says the previous frame is held instead of "shown as placeholders".
