Summary

Adds a watchOS app, embedded in the iOS app, that records overnight wrist acceleration as movement labels for the training workspace's movement classifier. Watch motion is used to label movement only, never as a sleep-stage feature: the Watch's own stages come partly from the same accelerometer.

  • Watch target SleepypodWatch (project.yml, XcodeGen; embedded through "Embed Watch Content"; bundle id …sleepypod.watchkitapp):
    • Asks for Motion & Fitness permission.
    • Record tonight (1–12 h) calls CMSensorRecorder.recordAccelerometer(forDuration:) and shows whether recording is available or allowed.
    • Send to iPhone reads the span back, summarizes it into 2 s bins and queues the file with WatchConnectivity transferFile.
    • Raw 50 Hz export is an opt-in toggle. The recorder sits behind an AccelerometerSource protocol.
  • Shared/WatchMotion/WatchMotionFile.swift, compiled into both apps:
    • The watch-motion-v1 format and its decoding with validation.
    • The summarizer: bins aligned to Unix time; mean and variance of |a|; max jerk between readings at most 0.5 s apart; moving-sample count; empty bins omitted so a gap is never stillness.
    • RecordingPlan, which clamps a request to 12 h and limits read-back to time that has passed.
  • iPhone:
    • WatchMotionReceiver copies each delivered file before the callback returns, validates it and stores it in Application Support/WatchMotion.
    • Settings → Watch movement lists recordings, each with a share link.
    • Nothing is uploaded.
  • docs/watch-motion-format.md: how a recording works, field units, timestamps (Unix ms with IANA zone and offset), and limits.
  • .swiftlint.yml now also lints SleepypodWatch and Shared.

Test plan

  • xcodegen generate; xcodebuild build for the iOS Simulator with SWIFT_TREAT_WARNINGS_AS_ERRORS=YES builds both targets.
  • swiftlint --strict: 0 violations.
  • xcodebuild test -only-testing:SleepypodTests on an iOS 26 simulator: 134 tests pass, 7 of them new in "Watch movement".
  • Coverage: WatchMotionFile.swift 100%; WatchMotionReceiver.swift 85% (only the WatchConnectivity callbacks are uncovered). The Watch-only files have no test target.
  • On a paired iPhone and Apple Watch:
    1. Install from Xcode and confirm the Watch app appears.
    2. Open it on the Watch and tap Record tonight (try 1 h); allow Motion & Fitness.
    3. Close the app and wear the Watch.
    4. Later, tap Send to iPhone.
    5. On the iPhone, open Settings → Watch movement: the recording is listed with plausible duration and bin count.
    6. Share the file to a Mac and check it matches docs/watch-motion-format.md.
  • Overnight on a real Watch: background recording over a full night, battery cost, and the ~3-day retention. All unverified.

Add a Watch app icon and privacy manifest to the watchOS target.

The SleepypodWatch target has no app icon and no privacy manifest of its own. The AppIcon asset catalog and PrivacyInfo.xcprivacy exist only under Sleepypod/, which the iOS target uses. The watchOS app is a separate bundle, so the iOS icon and manifest do not cover it. Apple requires a watchOS app icon, and App Store Connect can reject an archive that lacks one.

SleepypodWatch/RecordingController.swift reads and writes UserDefaults.standard. UserDefaults is a required-reason API, so the Watch bundle needs its own privacy manifest that declares NSPrivacyAccessedAPICategoryUserDefaults.

Add these files under SleepypodWatch/:

  • An asset catalog that contains an AppIcon app icon set.
  • A PrivacyInfo.xcprivacy file that declares NSPrivacyAccessedAPICategoryUserDefaults.

Then point the Watch target at the icon set. Add the setting only after the icon set exists:

Read and summarize the night in windows instead of one array.

CoreMotionAccelerometer.samples(in:) appends every reading from the recorder into one [MotionSample]. For a 9–12 h night at 50 Hz, that is about 1.6–2.2 million readings. Each MotionSample stores four Double values, so the array is about 52–69 MB. MotionSummarizer.summarize then calls samples.sorted, which allocates a second full copy, so the two arrays together reach about 105–140 MB. With includeRaw, file(...) also maps each reading to its own [Double], which adds heap overhead on top of that.

watchOS limits memory per app, and the system can terminate an app that exceeds its limit. The repository does not state this app's limit. If the limit is exceeded during send, a full-night transfer fails. The PR states that overnight Watch behavior is not yet verified.

Read the span in windows of 15–30 minutes. Align each window boundary to a multiple of the 2 s bin size, and carry the last reading into the next window so jerk is measured across the boundary. Feed each window to a streaming summarizer that keeps only the open bins. If the recorder returns readings in time order, the full sort can be removed. For raw export, write rows in chunks instead of building the nested array.

Measure peak memory on a real Watch with a 9 h recording, with and without raw export.

## Discussion

The system places downloaded files inside a temporary directory. If you intend to keep the file, it is your responsibility to move the file to a more permanent location inside your extension’s container directory. You must move the file before your session delegate’s `session:didReceiveFile:` method returns.

## Overview

You do not create instances of this class directly. When you initiate a file transfer using the `transferFile(_:metadata:)` method of your app’s `WCSession` object, the session creates an instance when it queues the file for transfer. You can get a list of in-progress transfers initiated by your app from the session’s `outstandingFileTransfers` property. When a file is received by your app, the corresponding file object is delivered directly to your session’s delegate.

The file object includes the URL of the file on the local system and an optional dictionary of keys and values that accompany the file.

Instance Method

# transferFile(_:metadata:)

Sends the specified file and optional dictionary to the counterpart.

    `func transferFile(
        _ file: `URL`,
        metadata: [`String` : Any]?
    ) -> `WCSessionFileTransfer``

## Parameters

`file`

A file-based URL that identifies the file to send. The specified file must be readable by the current app. This parameter must not be `nil`.

`metadata`

An optional dictionary containing additional data to send. The values of the dictionary must all be property list object types. You may specify `nil` for this parameter.

## Return Value

A file transfer object containing the file and dictionary being sent. You can use this object to cancel the file transfer at a later time.

## Discussion

Use this method to send a file that’s local to the current device. Files are transferred to the counterpart asynchronously on a background thread. The system attempts to send files as quickly as possible but may throttle delivery speeds to accommodate performance and power concerns. Use the `outstandingFileTransfers` method to get a list of files that are queued for delivery but have not yet been delivered to the counterpart.

If the file and its accompanying dictionary can’t be sent, the session object calls the session:fileTransfer:didFinishWithError: method of its delegate and reports an error. Errors may occur if the dictionary contains non-property list object types or if the specified URL doesn’t contain a valid file.

This method can only be called while the session is active (the `activationState` property is set to `WCSessionActivationState.activated`). Calling this method for an inactive or deactivated session is a programmer error.

Warning

Always test Watch Connectivity file transfers on paired devices. The Simulator app doesn’t support the `transferFile(_:metadata:)` method.

## Parameters

`session`

The session object of the current process.

`file`

The object containing the URL of the file and any additional information. If you want to keep the file referenced by this parameter, you must move it synchronously to a new location during your implementation of this method. If you don’t move the file, the system deletes it after this method returns.

## Discussion

The session object calls this method when it successfully receives a file from its counterpart. Implement this method to incorporate the file information into the current app. The system calls this method on a background thread.

Remember to move the file referenced by the `file` parameter if you intend to keep it. If you don’t move the file synchronously during your implementation of this method, the system deletes the file when the method returns.

Warning

Always test Watch Connectivity file transfers on paired devices. The system doesn’t call the `session:didReceiveFile:` method in Simulator.

About Apple File System
This directory stores data like configuration files, templates, and modified versions of default files from your bundle. The system also includes the contents of this folder as part of regular backups.

Important

If you want to exclude an item in `Documents` or `ApplicationSupport` from backup, call `setResourceValues(_:)` with the value `isExcludedFromBackup` in Swift, or `setResourceValue:forKey:error:` with the key `NSURLIsExcludedFromBackupKey` in Objective-C. Exclude from the backup any file that your app can recreate or redownload, particularly large media files.

### Store short-lived files

Your app may also use shorter-lived files that you don’t need backed up or stored permanently. Foundation provides several directories for storing these kinds of files.

Access the temporary directory with the URL property `temporaryDirectory`, and the file manager property `temporaryDirectory`. Use this directory for files with a short lifespan, like the side effects of computational operations, or one-time downloads that can be discarded after use.

Only use the temporary directory for files that you don’t need to persist between launches of the app, because the system may purge this directory when your app isn’t running. There’s no guarantee of when or if the system will clear the directory, however, so delete temporary files as soon as you know you don’t need them.

For files that persist longer than temporary files, but are still purgeable, use the caches directory. In the caches directory, store files the app doesn’t require to operate, but that improve performance, such as database cache files and transient, downloadable content.

Access the caches directory with the URL property `cachesDirectory` or the file manager search path `NSCachesDirectory`. As with the temporary directory, the system may purge this directory when your app isn’t running. Your app needs to either be able to operate without these files, or regenerate them as needed. Additionally, invalidate and delete cache files when you can, and don’t waste storage on unnecessary files.

The contents of the `Library` directory (with the exception of the `Caches` subdirectory) are backed up by iTunes and iCloud.For additional information about the Library directory and its commonly used subdirectories, see The Library Directory Stores App-Specific Files.
`tmp/` | Use this directory to write temporary files that do not need to persist between launches of your app. Your app should remove files from this directory when they are no longer needed; however, the system may purge this directory when your app is not running. The contents of this directory are not backed up by iTunes or iCloud.

An iOS app may create additional directories in the `Documents`, `Library`, and `tmp` directories. You might do this to better organize the files in those locations.

For information about how to get references to the preceding directories from your iOS app, see Locating Items in the Standard Directories. For tips on where to put files, see Where You Should Put Your App’s Files.
This directory can also include data files, configuration files, templates and modified versions of resources loaded from the app bundle.

  * Remember that files in `Documents/` and `Application Support/` are backed up by default. You can exclude files from the backup by calling` -[NSURL setResourceValue:forKey:error:]` using the `NSURLIsExcludedFromBackupKey` key. Any file that can be re-created or downloaded must be excluded from the backup. This is particularly important for large media files. If your application downloads video or audio files, make sure they are not included in the backup.

  * Put temporary data in the `tmp/` directory. Temporary data comprises any data that you do not need to persist for an extended period of time. Remember to delete those files when you are done with them so that they do not continue to consume space on the user’s device. The system will periodically purge these files when your app is not running; therefore, you cannot rely on these files persisting after your app terminates.

  * Put data cache files in the `Library/Caches/` directory. Cache data can be used for any data that needs to persist longer than temporary data, but not as long as a support file. Generally speaking, the application does not require cache data to operate properly, but it can use cache data to improve performance. Examples of cache data include (but are not limited to) database cache files and transient, downloadable content. Note that the system may delete the `Caches/` directory to free up disk space, so your app must be able to re-create or download these files as needed.

  * Use the `NSFileManager` method `URLsForDirectory:inDomains:` to get the directory for storing temporary files. Temporary files are files you intend to use immediately for some ongoing operation but then plan to discard later. Delete temporary files as soon as you are done with them.

Important: If you do not delete temporary files after three days, the system may delete them for you whether you are using them or not.

Note: Apps rarely share the files stored in the `Application Support`, `Caches` or `Temp` directories. Therefore, you don’t typically need to use a file coordinator (`NSFileCoordinator`) when reading or writing to these locations. Shared directories

An app with the proper entitlements can gain access to an app-specific directory in a person’s iCloud storage and use that directory to store content with the person’s other devices. If you build a suite of apps, or share files between an app and app extension, you can also create an app group to share content between different processes on the same device.

Class

# WCSession

The object that initiates communication between a WatchKit extension and its companion iOS app.

    `class WCSession`

## Overview

Your iOS app and watchOS app must both create and configure an instance of this class at some point during their execution. When both session objects are active, the two processes can communicate immediately by sending messages back and forth. When only one session is active, the active session may still send updates and transfer files, but those transfers happen opportunistically in the background.

Important

The session object must be configured and activated before you attempt to send messages or obtain information about the state of the connection. Before activating the session, you may call the `isSupported()` method to make sure that current device can use the Watch Connectivity framework.

### Configuring and Activating the Session

To configure and activate the session, assign a `delegate` to the default session object and call that object’s `activate()` method, as shown in code snippet below. Your WatchKit extension and iOS app must each configure their own session object. Activating the session establishes a connection between the two apps.

  * Swift
  * Objective-C

    `if WCSession.isSupported() {
       let session = WCSession.default
       session.delegate = self
       session.activate()
    }
    `

    `if ([WCSession isSupported]) {
        WCSession* session = [WCSession defaultSession];
        session.delegate = self;
        [session activate];
    }
    `

To support the pairing of multiple watches to the same iPhone, the session delegate of both your apps must implement the activation APIs. Implementing the `session(_:activationDidCompleteWith:error:)` method lets the session know that your app supports asynchronous activation. Implementing the `sessionDidBecomeInactive(_:)` and `sessionDidDeactivate(_:)` methods in the session delegate of your iOS app is required to manage transitions between different Apple Watches.

Important

If your delegate does not implement the appropriate methods for asynchronous activation and activation state changes, your app opts out of multiple Apple Watch support altogether. Opting out has important implications for your app when the user switches from one Apple Watch to another. When a switch occurs, your app’s session is deactivated. When your app subsequently moves to the background, the system terminates your app. (Background execution modes do not prevent the termination of your app.) The next time your app launches, it connects with the new Apple Watch.

Apps may initiate transfers only when the session is active—that is, the `activationState` is set to `WCSessionActivationState.activated`. Your iOS app should also check the `isPaired` and `isWatchAppInstalled` properties before sending any background messages, and it may need to check other properties as needed. Most of the properties you need to check are valid only while the session is active. At other times, the values of the properties may be undefined. The `activationState` property is always valid and contains the current activation state of the session. For details, see the corresponding property description.

For more information about implementing the methods of the delegate object, see `WCSessionDelegate`.

# Transferring data with Watch Connectivity

Transfer data between a watchOS app and its companion iOS app.

Download

## Overview

Some watchOS apps rely on their companion iOS app to perform complicated tasks, and need to exchange data with the companion app even when there’s no internet connection. The Watch Connectivity framework provides APIs for this purpose. This sample demonstrates how to use the APIs, and how to handle Watch Connectivity background tasks.

Important

Use a physical iPhone and Apple Watch to test this sample code project.

### Configure the sample code project

Before building the sample app, perform the following steps in Xcode:

  1. Verify that the bundle identifiers for the watchOS app and widget targets are based on the iOS app target’s bundle identifier. For example, if the iOS app target uses `com.YourCompany.ProductName`, the watchOS app and widget targets must use `com.YourCompany.ProductName.watchkitapp` and `com.YourCompany.ProductName.watchkitapp.SimpleWatchWidget`, respectively. To check this, select each target and click its Signing & Capabilities tab.

  2. In the Signing & Capabilities tab for each target, set the developer team to let Xcode automatically manage the provisioning profile. See Assign a project to a team for details.

  3. In the Info tab of the `SimpleWatchConnectivity Watch App` target, change the value of the `WKCompanionAppBundleIdentifier` key to the iOS app target’s bundle identifier.

  4. Replace the App Group container identifier `group.com.example.apple-samplecode.SimpleWatchConnectivity` with one specific to your team. The identifier occurs in the entitlements for the watchOS app and the widget, and in `WidgetSupport.swift`. See Configuring App Groups for more details.

### Transfer data with Watch Connectivity

The Watch Connectivity framework provides APIs that accomplish the following tasks:

  * Updating app context data

  * Sending a message

  * Transferring user info and managing outstanding transfers

  * Transferring a file, observing the transfer progress, and managing outstanding transfers

  * Updating an active complication from the companion iOS app

All APIs transfer a dictionary between the companion apps, with notable differences. `updateApplicationContext(_:)` sends a dictionary that represents the current app context to the companion app. It overwrites the context data currently existing in the pipeline, if any. `transferUserInfo(_:)` guarantees to deliver a dictionary. If an app performs another transfer before finishing the previous one, the system queues the transfers and delivers them in the order received. `sendMessage(_:replyHandler:errorHandler:)` sends a dictionary immediately. If the method encounters an error, it returns the error via the error handler.

An app can provide a reply handler to receive a response from its companion app. The reply handler runs asynchronously on a background thread, and returns quickly to avoid timeout. Sending a message from a watchOS app wakes up its companion iOS app, if the companion is reachable.

### Update an active complication from the companion iOS app

This sample provides a WidgetKit complication that shows a timestamp. To activate the complication:

  1. Choose a Modular watch face on the Apple Watch.

  2. Press the watch face to show the customization screen, tap the Edit button, and swi…[truncated]</excerpt>

Instance Method

# transferFile(_:metadata:)

Sends the specified file and optional dictionary to the counterpart.

    `func transferFile(
        _ file: `URL`,
        metadata: [`String` : Any]?
    ) -> `WCSessionFileTransfer``

The same bug, performing the same operations as author does. Providing empty metadata in transferFile method doesn't help either, outcome is the same. I am on iOS 17.5 and watchOS 10.5

Was really excited to discover Xcode 15.4 seeing my Apple Watch again after 15.3 refused to display it. But this new bug is clouding the sky again and blocking this part of development.

+1 to the same bug report Found this issue when updated to iOS 17.5 and watchOS 10.5

Still using Xcode 15.2, as my Xcode 15.4 doesn't detect my Apple Watch. That is another issue.

But the file transfer from iPhone to Apple Watch works. However, there is notification that the file transfer is complete or not. This issue started to happen since the latest update watchOS 10.5

I run into the same problem when transferring a file from WatchOS to iPhone.

How can I handle this kind of error? The callback session(_ session: WCSession, didFinish fileTransfer: WCSessionFileTransfer, error: Error?) did not fire at all and the file transfer gets stuck.

KGBird OP

May ’24

I have the same problem. My watch app maintains a send queue of files to send to my iOS companion app. In watchOS 10.5, didFinishFileTransfer is never called. Hence my watch app never removes files from the queue and sends the same files repeatedly, even though the files do successfully make it to my iOS companion app. I just released a version of my iOS companion app that ignores transferred files it believes is have been previously received. I never needed to do that when didFinishFileTransfer was called. However, I wonder if I need to find a way to remove the files from my send queue. I could send a list of the files recently received from my iOS app back to my watch app so that my watch app could remove them from the queue. I'm going to wait and hope that Apple fixes this bug in a future release, in which case my watch app will send all the files again and my iOS app will ignore them. However, didFinishFileTransfer will be called and my watch app will remove the files from the queue. I did file a report with the Apple Feedback Assistant.

JackAardal OP

Are there any updates on this? We've developed a workaround, but we're still a few weeks away from being able to release the update, and our current users are unable to fully use the app if they've updated their Watch and/or Phone.

Instance Method

# transferFile(_:metadata:)

Sends the specified file and optional dictionary to the counterpart.

    `func transferFile(
        _ file: `URL`,
        metadata: [`String` : Any]?
    ) -> `WCSessionFileTransfer``

Warning

Class

  * Swift
  * Objective-C

    `if WCSession.isSupported() {
       let session = WCSession.default
       session.delegate = self
       session.activate()
    }
    `

    `if ([WCSession isSupported]) {
        WCSession* session = [WCSession defaultSession];
        session.delegate = self;
        [session activate];
    }

If you do, use the activation and deactivation process to update your iOS app.

For more information about handling session activation and deactivation, see `WCSessionDelegate`.

### Communicating with the Counterpart App

You may initiate data transfers to a counterpart app only when the `activationState` property is set to `WCSessionActivationState.activated`. The iOS app should ensure the Watch app is insta…[truncated]</excerpt>

Report queued and completed delivery separately.

transferFile queues an asynchronous transfer. The current code reports Sent immediately, and RecordingController has no session(_:didFinish:error:) callback to report failures. Set the status to Queued, then update it from the completion callback. Remove the source file only after successful delivery.

Stop decoding every stored recording on the main actor.

WatchMotionReceiver runs on the main actor. Its init and received(.success) call inbox.recordings() synchronously. That method reads and fully decodes every JSON file, but the list needs only from, to, and the bin count. Raw 50 Hz recordings are tens of megabytes (docs/watch-motion-format.md:43-47). No code removes stored recordings, so this cost grows with the inbox. Each launch and each delivery can stall the UI and increase memory use.

Store the listing metadata when a file is saved, and list from that metadata. Load the list off the main actor. Filename alone is not enough: watch-motion-<ms>.json gives from, but to and bins require stored metadata.

-        case .success: recordings = inbox.recordings(); lastError = nil
+        case .success: lastError = nil; Task { await reload() }

The list now loads asynchronously after init and after each delivery. Update any test that expects the list immediately after init.

Update WatchMotionInbox.store(contentsOf:) to persist the recording’s from, to,
and bin-count metadata beside the canonical file, and have recordings() build
listings from that metadata instead of decoding every recording; retain a
fallback for files without metadata. Update WatchMotionReceiver.init and
