Summary

  • Add an artwork manifest mode to Marketing/AppStore/generate.py that renders App Store Connect creative assets (product-page header 3840×1646, search results 3840×2560, universal 5244×2950) on the same night-sky gradient, with the app icon, lowercase wordmark, a short caption and one framed capture from raw/.
  • Add manifest.artwork.json (temperature dial for header/universal, sleep night for search). Output lands in Marketing/AppStore/output/artwork/{dark,light}/ and stays untracked like the screenshot sets.
  • --check-config validates placement sizes against Apple's spec table, rejects pricing symbols and the words Apple's asset guidance forbids, and checks caption fit; --self-test renders every placement from a mock capture and asserts size and RGB/no-alpha. New --guides outlines the safe area for proofing.
  • README documents the placements with Apple's URLs, the measured safe areas, the upload path, and that Apple Ads needs no separate upload (search ads use screenshots or a custom product page; Today tab ads use a custom product page).

Test plan

  • uv run Marketing/AppStore/generate.py --manifest Marketing/AppStore/manifest.artwork.json --check-config passes
  • --self-test passes for the artwork manifest and the three screenshot manifests (example, iphone-6.9, iphone-6.5)
  • Rendered dark and light sets from the reference raw captures; inspected each PNG and simulated Apple's header (76 % height) and search (3:2 centre) crops of the universal image
  • Existing screenshot render still works (--only 01-temperature --appearance dark)
  • Upload the dark set in App Store Connect under Header and Search Results and confirm in the product page preview

📝 Walkthrough

The App Store generator now supports artwork manifests in addition to screenshot manifests. It validates placement settings and copy, renders artwork for configured appearances, and documents the artwork outputs and generation workflow.

Changes: App Store artwork generation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Artwork manifest and validation
Marketing/AppStore/manifest.artwork.json, Marketing/AppStore/generate.py, Marketing/AppStore/README.md
The manifest defines header, search, and universal artwork. The generator validates placement dimensions, safe areas, PNG output, and artwork copy. The README documents the supported placements and asset requirements.
Artwork layout and rendering
Marketing/AppStore/generate.py
The renderer adds safe-area-aware phone and caption layouts, optional guides, and checks for output dimensions and RGB mode without alpha. Caption wrapping preserves explicit newline breaks.
Manifest dispatch and validation support
Marketing/AppStore/generate.py, Marketing/AppStore/README.md
Manifest rendering and CLI filtering support both screenshots and artwork. Self-tests render configured artwork placements and appearances. The README describes previews, generated outputs, and renderer behavior.

Some custom artwork configurations can pass validation but fail when rendered. The risk is bounded; the change is mergeable with owner awareness and a follow-up fix.

effective caption-column width that render_artwork applies, including its
input-dependent limit. Share the column calculation between check_config and
render_artwork, then pass that effective width to fit_artwork_caption so
--check-config rejects any caption that would fail or be clipped during

Use the render-time caption column in --check-config.

check_config validates captions against artwork_column_width(...), but render_artwork applies an additional input-dependent width limit. A valid artwork configuration can therefore pass --check-config while rendering raises ValueError from fit_artwork_caption (or clips the caption). Share the effective column calculation between both paths, or reject configurations that cannot produce a valid render.

The artwork validation in check_config must use the same effective
caption-column width that render_artwork applies, including its input-dependent
limit. Share the column calculation between check_config and render_artwork,
then pass that effective width to fit_artwork_caption so --check-config rejects
any caption that would fail or be clipped during rendering.
