I was going to PR d3treeR#41 in the original d3treeR repo but then saw your fork which seems to be quite active. I'd rather see my changes either in d3tree2 or d3tree3 (don't know how they're different, have been using d3tree2) but can't guarantee that I'm not messing anything up in d3tree.js.
