Adds noise reduction to RAW photos with a 2 × 2 mosaic, an amount from 0 to 100 on the image layer. The GPU fits the photo's Poisson-Gaussian noise per color filter position, stabilizes it with the generalized Anscombe transform, and filters a six-level pyramid with two-step sliding DCT denoising before the unbiased inverse returns samples. The source keeps the reduced samples, so fading and later edits only blend decoded and reduced samples and develop again.

🔴 Saved noise reduction disappears in older editors
When a reduced photo has no perspective correction, sceneVersion still marks its scene as version 2. Older editors accept that scene and silently discard its noise-reduction setting.
Learn more
Scene files use a version to stop older editors from accepting content they cannot preserve. The saved image now contains noiseReduction, but sceneVersion still selects version 2 for every frame without perspective. An older editor accepts version 2 and its image-layer parser does not recognize the new field, so loading and saving drops the reduction. This also affects drafts recovered in an older build.
Example: A user saves a RAW with noiseReduction: 100 and default perspective. The file says version 2; the previous editor opens it, strips noiseReduction, and saves an unfiltered scene.
Recommended fix: Bump the supported scene version and return the new version when the scene carries noise reduction. Keep version 2 for scenes without the new setting so existing files remain compatible.

🔴 Large RAW photos exceed GPU binding limits
For a 45-megapixel RAW, spectrum allocates about 180 MiB in one storage buffer. That exceeds WebGPU's default 128 MiB binding limit, so noise reduction fails.
Learn more
A spectrum stores four half-float values per 2 × 2 Bayer cell in one GPU storage buffer. A 45-megapixel sensor has about 22.5 million cells, so the finest buffer is about 180 MiB. WebGPU's default maxStorageBufferBindingSize is 128 MiB; creating a buffer does not raise that binding limit, and each compute pass binds the whole buffer. Consequently, common high-resolution RAW photos cannot complete their first reduction.
Example: A 45 MP Bayer image requests roughly 180 MB for pyramid[0]; prepare binds that buffer and GPU validation rejects the pass instead of returning reduced samples.
Recommended fix: Tile the finest spectrum and its filtering passes into bounded bindings, or negotiate and check the required device limits before offering the feature. Include a RAW fixture or synthetic mosaic beyond the default limit in validation.

🟡 Unsupported scenes silently retain noise reduction
A scene with noiseReduction on a JPEG passes validation, although setNoiseReduction rejects that source. Rendering ignores the setting, so the reopened scene does not reproduce its saved edits.
Learn more
The image-layer schema checks only the number's range. Source compatibility cannot be known until openScene decodes the source, but the loader never checks whether the decoded source has a mosaic. The editing command rejects non-Bayer sources, while a saved scene with the same unsupported value opens and renders without applying the edit.
Example: A scene names photo.jpg and records noiseReduction: 80; loading succeeds, but the JPEG has no mosaic and the renderer treats the amount as zero.
Recommended fix: After decoding in openScene, reject a defined noise-reduction value when decoded.raw?.mosaic is absent, with a field-specific error.

🟡 Failed reduction stays disabled after retry
When mosaic.denoised fails, reduction still records the requested amount while raw.prepare receives no reduced samples. A later render at that amount skips denoising and keeps the photo noisy.
Learn more
mosaic.denoised clears its cached promise on rejection so a later request can retry. The renderer catches that rejection, prepares a pass without reduced samples, and still records the desired reduction as applied. If the user changes another layer or requests another render without changing the amount, the renderer's amount comparison prevents another denoise attempt. A changed white balance also prepares another pass without reduced samples when the attempt fails, leaving the slider at the requested value.
Example: An initial request at 60 fails transiently. The user then changes exposure while 60 remains selected; no new reduction runs and the image stays unfiltered.
Recommended fix: Track successfully applied sample state separately from requested amount, or leave the reduction unapplied on failure and retry on a subsequent request. Avoid a retry loop within the same failed request.

Update the reset command description to include noise reduction.
reset now clears noiseReduction (Line 70). API.md Line 231 documents this change. The command description at Line 195 still lists only "adjustments, tone curve, white balance, crop, and perspective". WebMCP publishes this string to browser agents as the tool description. Agents therefore do not learn that reset also turns off noise reduction.

Noise reduction now takes luminance and color strengths instead of an opacity. A photo's reduction runs once at three strengths, and each renderer composes them at the chosen ones in one pass. Non-RAW images reduce in their encoded color. The noise fit follows the quietest blocks and leaves out texture, hot pixels are left alone, and patches mirror past the edges, so detailed photos keep their detail.
…-size color by its own texels Defines once in the image module which sources take noise reduction and what none is, gives a coarse level without flat blocks white noise's deviation, and aligns half-size color with odd-sized images.

🔴 Large photos cannot complete noise reduction
On a non-RAW photo above 16.8 megapixels, spectrum creates a storage buffer exceeding WebGPU's default 128 MiB binding limit. The reduction fails, leaving noise unchanged and preventing export.
Learn more
The non-RAW path calls reduceImage with the full image dimensions. spectrum allocates eight bytes per pixel, and shrink binds that entire buffer as storage. A 6000 × 4000 JPEG needs 192 MB in this single binding, above the default WebGPU maxStorageBufferBindingSize of 128 MiB. The reduction error is caught for preview, but renderExport awaits a fresh renderer update and rejects on the failure.
Example: On a 6000 × 4000 JPEG, setting luminance noise to 50 allocates a 192 MB spectrum. The filter cannot bind it, so the displayed image stays noisy and exporting rejects instead of saving the reduced image.
Recommended fix: Tile the full-resolution image spectrum and filter bindings, or implement a bounded image-reduction path whose maximum storage binding size respects the actual device limits. Verify the path with a photo larger than 16.8 megapixels.

🟡 Tiny images cannot export after noise adjustment
For an image under 16 pixels on either side, reduceImage rejects every positive strength. The sliders still permit the edit, leaving the preview unchanged and export rejected.
Learn more
The controls expose both sliders for every non-RAW source, regardless of size. reduceImage throws before generating anchors if either dimension is below one 16-pixel block. The preview falls back to the original image, while renderExport propagates the error and fails the export.
Example: Load a 12 × 40 PNG and set { luminance: 50 }. The edit is stored, but the photo remains unchanged and exportImage() rejects rather than returning a PNG.
Recommended fix: Define a reduction path for images smaller than a measurement block, or prevent a nonzero noise reduction from being stored for unsupported image sizes. Ensure restored scenes with such an edit can still export.

A photo's reduction now runs once, at the noise it measures, with patches on every other texel, instead of three times, so it takes far less memory and time. Strengths remove the difference between the photo and its reduction by each 3 × 3 neighborhood, in noise deviations: noise goes evenly and detail stays. Other images filter light through 2 × 2 Haar components and color apart, each at half size, so large photos fit the GPU's storage binding instead of failing and turning gray, and they stay in their own format.

| - The scene's frame maps output to source in one homogeneous transform, `frameTransform` in `core/image/frame.ts`: crop, rotation, flips, and scale, then the perspective correction about the source's center. Layers, paint, masks, and patches stay in source pixels, so correcting perspective leaves them in place; `transformImage` resamples the composite once, the display draws the comparison and the mask overlay from the source through the same transform, and a frame that changes nothing adds no pass. The proxy follows the frame's strongest magnification, perspective's included. `lib/projective.ts` holds the plane projective geometry the frame, the Crop tool's coverage, and the canvas mapping share. | ||

| - Noise reduction works before the image layer's adjustments, on a RAW photo's 2 × 2 mosaic before demosaicing or on any other image's encoded color, at the layer's luminance and color strengths. `features/noise-reduction` reduces the noise on the GPU once per source, the first time a renderer or control asks; the image source keeps the reduction until it closes and shares it with every renderer, and each renderer composes it at the layer's strengths in one pass into a texture of its own. A RAW photo develops the composed samples: the package develops only its own sensor texture, so `core/image/decode/raw.ts` moves the decoded samples to a copy the first time and, right before each development, writes the samples that development takes into that texture, in the same task, so no other renderer's write falls between. Any other image's composition takes the composed image in place of the source. Changing a strength composes and develops again, as a white balance does, without reducing noise again; a newer request need not wait for a first reduction. `app/editor/renderer.ts` gives the renderer the feature's reduction, so the core imports no feature. Change
The image layer gains Noise reduction: Luminance noise and Color noise, each from 0 to 100, after Saturation in the sidebar and as the last dials of the dock's Light group. A RAW photo with a 2 × 2 Bayer mosaic reduces on its mosaic before demosaicing; any other image reduces in its encoded color. The algorithm explains each step and its limits.
A photo's noise reduces once on the GPU, at the noise it measures, with a spinner beside the sliders while the photo shows as it was. The source keeps the result, and each renderer composes it at the chosen strengths in one pass, so moving a slider, white balance, and every layer above apply at once. An amount sets how much of the difference between the photo and its reduction goes, in noise deviations, judged over each 3 × 3 neighborhood: low amounts take noise evenly and keep detail, which varies more, and 100 is the whole reduction. Color alone leaves a monochrome grain. The original comparison shows the photo as decoded.
For a RAW photo, the GPU fits its own Poisson-Gaussian noise per color filter position, from the quietest blocks so texture doesn't count as noise, makes the noise unit Gaussian with the generalized Anscombe transform, splits light from color and from the two greens' difference, and filters a six-level pyramid with two-step sliding 8 × 8 DCT denoising, patches on every other texel. Each level measures its own noise, capped near what white noise would leave there. The unbiased inverse returns samples, so 0 gives the decoded samples exactly.
raw-webgpudevelops only its own sensor texture, and its README allows pre-demosaic edits on GPU sources, so the RAW adapter writes the composed samples there right before each development and keeps a copy of the decoded ones. No package release is needed. Any other image filters its light through 2 × 2 Haar components and its color apart, each at half size, and stays in its own format, 8-bit sources dithered.Earlier pushes reduced at three strengths and blended them, which phones could not hold, and filtered other images at full size in one buffer: past 16 MP it exceeded WebGPU's default 128 MiB storage binding, the passes failed, and Color turned a large HEIC gray. Every spectrum now takes 2 bytes per pixel, so the largest texture a device takes fits.
Not in this change: a neural denoiser (the one model with shippable weights was trained partly on academic-only data), noise that varies by frequency within a level, JPEG block edges, and X-Trans or linear DNG files, which have no noise reduction.
Verification
bun run check, bun run build, and the 69 Bun tests pass. Browser tests for the workflows the change reaches pass on SwiftShader: noise reduction, RAW, auto white balance, rendering, crop, draft, loaders, scene file, TIFF, WebMCP, GPU stats, and start; HEIC skips, as this Chromium has no HEVC decoder. The same photo with sRGB noise of deviation 0.02 and 0.05 goes from 34.1 to 39.1 and from 26.2 to 32.6 at 50 (39.6 and 33.5 before): filtering light at half size through Haar components costs about 0.6 dB, the price of fitting the binding.
GPU memory for the ARW, from
?stats:What remains is the copy of the decoded samples (52 MB), the reduction (52 MB), the renderer's composed samples (52 MB), and its own development (208 MB), which a balance other than As Shot also takes. The peak while reducing no longer exceeds what stays. Releasing the As Shot development while another one shows would save the most for phones; that belongs to the RAW adapter, not this change.
Time, on CPU renderers only, as this machine has no GPU; they don't predict a phone:
Composing reads each pixel's 3 × 3 neighborhood, so a strength change costs more than before, most for images, which encode each neighbor's color again.
