fix: ProxyJump support, proxy errors that blame the right leg, host key algorithms - #257
Conversation
…ey algorithms ProxyJump in ~/.ssh/config now works: rr runs the system ssh -W to the jump host, as OpenSSH does, without a shell, in batch mode and in its own session, so no hop can prompt. It used to warn on every probe and dial the target directly. A failure in a jump host or ProxyCommand says so, with what ssh printed: "Couldn't reach 'X' through jump host 'J'", and "hostname not found via jump host 'J'" in status, doctor and connect progress. A target that refuses the handshake or hangs up is reported as the target's. rr now offers the host key algorithms known_hosts has for a host. A host recorded by its ed25519 key alone (what ssh writes) failed as a host key mismatch when the server offered ecdsa first. Also: knownhosts "key is unknown" maps to SSH_HOST_KEY with the accept-new command, SSH suggestions name the host instead of <host>, and the multi-host connect error keeps each host's failure. github.com/kevinburke/ssh_config v1.6.0 Config.Get implementation precedence ProxyCommand ProxyJump source
💡 Result:
In **v1.6.0**, `Config.Get(alias, key)` handles one requested key at a time; it doesn’t implement precedence between `ProxyCommand` and `ProxyJump`. It scans matching host blocks and their directives in order, returning the **first matching directive for that key** (case-insensitively). ([github.com](https://github.com/kevinburke/ssh_config/blob/v1.6.0/config.go))
So if both directives are present, calling `Get(host, "ProxyCommand")` returns the first matching `ProxyCommand`; calling `Get(host, "ProxyJump")` separately returns the first matching `ProxyJump`. The library doesn’t decide which one should take precedence over the other: `ProxyJump` does not override `ProxyCommand` inside `Config.Get`. The v1.6.0 source contains no `ProxyJump`-specific handling. ([github.com](https://github.com/kevinburke/ssh_config/blob/v1.6.0/config.go))
The `Get` implementation cited is specifically the `v1.6.0` source. ([github.com](https://github.com/kevinburke/ssh_config/blob/v1.6.0/config.go))

Honor the first proxy directive.
When ProxyCommand none is the first matching proxy directive and a later directive sets ProxyJump bastion, resolveSSHSettings drops none and loads the jump host. Dial then routes through bastion instead of connecting directly. Resolve ProxyCommand and ProxyJump in configuration order, and apply only the first.

Accurate, but leaving it for now. It only differs from OpenSSH when a host gets both directives with ProxyCommand none first. Exempting one host from a wildcard jump is usually done with ProxyJump none, which rr handles. The docs and CHANGELOG already say rr prefers ProxyCommand where OpenSSH takes whichever appears first. Matching OpenSSH means walking host blocks in order, which kevinburke/ssh_config doesn't expose, and special-casing none would break the reverse order. Not worth that complexity for this case.

@rileyhilliard Thanks for the guidance. Keeping the documented precedence behavior is a reasonable trade-off here. I won’t push for a change in this PR.
Would you like a follow-up issue, or leave this as a documented limitation?

Learning: In rileyhilliard/rr, pkg/sshutil/client.go deliberately prefers an active ProxyCommand over ProxyJump rather than implementing OpenSSH's first-proxy-directive-wins semantics. The maintainer accepts the limitation that ProxyCommand none does not suppress a later ProxyJump. ProxyJump none is the supported way to exempt a host from a wildcard jump configuration. Do not request full OpenSSH proxy precedence parity without considering this deliberate complexity trade-off.
